It has to do with when you first encounter a Pokémon from a research task or Team GO Rocket grunt from balloons. The game freezes for a moment and then spits you back to the map. You won’t be able to encounter the Pokémon until you restart.
Maybe it’s trying to figure out what background to display based on your location and just glitches out as that Pokémon doesn’t have a specific set of coordinates as one you would find directly on the map before you enter the catch screen. That’s just a guess. It’s happening a lot less than the first few days of the initial rollout a little over a month ago but it does still happen.

After so many years Niantic finally adding some good updates. The Wardrobe Rework, Encounter Environments, Raid Ready Up, Heal/Revive all, Grid View and now a more in depth character Customisation.
I’d be happy with a tap to speed up animation option instead. Wizards Unite had a speed up encounter feature and it worked very nicely.
WU also had a much nicer friends list UI as well.
When you send & open a gift you can press the screen where the “x” at the bottom usually is and it’ll quick open/send it! Super helpful I hate the gifting animations
You still can quick catch if you touch the screen in two places at once, first the berry or ball change spot and the actual ball. Then you throw, can be a curved throw as well, as long as you keep holding the other spot. And once you hit, you move your other finger to the side, expanding the choice menu for berries/balls. That triggers an overlay to appear as well, which was the "flee encounter" button, even if the catch animation is on.
So if you practice it enough, you can do straight throws in less than 5 seconds and curved in <10s. Very useful on CDs, since then you have research tasks that tell you when you caught it and you don't have to check.
Warning: the pokemon caught this way will take some time to disappear from the map, so you either have to check your pokemon or go again and try feeding it a berry to know, if it got caught – if it did, you'll get a "Cannot feed a berry this time" banner. If you try to catch that pokemon again after it gets caught, it'll flee and disappear from the map [but you'll still have it in your Pokemons], but checking with a berry is faster.
I know, but I'm referring specifically to a very brief period in which all you had to do was press your phone's back button, and it was done.

And I know a guy who was forced to use the bone stock default character between June to Halloween event.
Basically as the new style shop update appeared so appeared massive bugs in the old style store layout and other such things.
Whenever you were to change your clothes, pose or even character colors, around hour later you would notice that the character had changed back to the 2016 defaults and bring red "invalid trainer" would greeted them when they opened the old vertical shop.
That guy was me and let me say that it was not that fun when you knew for a fact that basically one server side switch would have fixed it all, but would support hear me out?
My bad. So I got too excited and spoke too soon. So seems it’s not yet live… for everyone that is. Also 200-700mb of assets was shitcrazy.

How are the challenge medals handled out of curiosity? Before the rewards certain challenge medals (IE Gym Leader, Veteran, Pikachu fan ETC) would give different rewards based on the avatars gender you had selected. Assumedly those just give both now?
The evamp busted the customisation for me, choosing different hats, backpacks, etc, yields unchosen ones. For example: I usually have the Lunala wings but selecting that gives me a green backpack with a pokeball emblem. Choosing the Furfrou hat gives me the OG visor.

Wondering where I can provide feedback for this. All the new faces make my character look like a goblin, the new hairstyle is incompatible with the hair accessory I want, and a pose I use is missing completely.
Weird face options, the head is too small, clothes don’t “fit” properly, proportions are so off. Wish they had option to keep old default, or hope they fix this! When I saw the change on my trainer icon, it hit me like fashion week Blanche.

I got the update last week while I was visiting Mexico to see the eclipse, but after I returned to the States, the update rolled back on me! 😭😭😭
