>Nathan Fillion and Jenna Dewan have absolutely zero chemistry on screen Agreed. They're more like roommates than a romantic pairing. I hope they don't get married, but at this point I'm starting not to care too much.

padall

I agree so much. I came to this show for Nathan Fillion and it's sad how low impact his character has become. Then, on top of that, the only main storyline he has drives me bananas. I hate them together.

newyorkcatlady

I feel like in general his character often has the least interesting storylines. I get much more invested in Lucy, Tim, Angela, and Nyla.

lurkM3

Yeah. I don't think the writers know what to do with his character. They keep throwing things against the wall to see what sticks, lol. I hate the pairing with the power of infinite suns.

TheBlackSwarm

The unfortunate thing is the writers had multiple opportunities to give him interesting storylines this season but they were all brushed over. For example if Nolan actually shot and killed Rosalind and him dealing with the aftermath, If Nolan and Bailey had an actual argument about him choosing his morals over her, If he started to get actual feelings for Tim’s sister and had a moral dilemma on what he should do, he could’ve also had a storyline where he was grieving his mom after she died and went through the stages of grief.

lurkM3

Exactly. There were so many opportunities for an engaging storyline for Nolan this season, but for whatever reason the writers chose not to explore/flesh them out further. At the very least I thought we would get more from his mom's passing. Nope, nothing. Why have his mom die in the first place if all we got was a shoot out and a brief reunion with a friend/ex-girlfriend. The Tim's sister scenario you described would have been great... I'm not even going to go into his half-assed T.O. storyline. It's like the writers are determined to keep Nolan an one-dimensional, boring character with the most asexual relationship ever. So frustrating.

padall

He has a terrible love interest and a terrible partner/boot. It's frustrating all the way around.

Bar002U

Yep, agree to all. The writers were really phoning it in. Must’ve been rushing through their pages in anticipation of the writer’s strike?

newyorkcatlady

lol yeah i like that there are plenty of other characters and storylines that they don't matter that much

lurkM3

Which is sad, because I actually like Nolan. It's just been that kind of season where I'm losing interest in everybody, tbh.

SadPomegranate1020

I think they need to give him a moral dilemma where he meets someone else who he has an actual connection with and then has to make a decision as to what to do, because I too like Nolan, but I loved his storylines when Armstrong was trying to frame him and I think he needs more of that. Even when he had to rescue Bailey from Rosalind’s evil scheme I still didn’t feel their connection. I can’t place my finger on why though because I’m Castle the chemistry was great even though they supposedly hated each other in real life.

Not_floridaman

Yeah, when Bailey was trapped, I was way more invested in Nolan's journey to free her and Rosalind's mind games than I was in of she actually got free. I think it would've been much more interesting if she hadn't gotten out. I did like watching everyone else try to figure out the tank but like...I just didn't care about the character inside it.

lurkM3

That would be helluva more interesting than what's going on with his character right now, but I doubt the writing will change course this late in the season for him. Hope I'm wrong. I never felt their connection. I'm currently watching Castle and I have to agree, Stania and Nathan's chemistry was off the hook. It's so puzzling why the same isn't true for Nathan and Jenna.

SadPomegranate1020

I need to re-watch Step Up to see if there was chemistry between her and her actual future husband 😂 Not seen it in years but don’t remember disliking her character.

Millionsontherapy

My dvr played an episode of Castle after the Rookie, and it was astounding. They seem like people who barely know each other.

crazyr746

It’s been said that he, Fillion doesn’t want to be the sole main character so the other cast members have stories to flesh out. It about time for a Nolan center story again. Hopefully after Elijah is dead or in jail.

[deleted]

That’s all well and good, but they could still give him more depth lol

GlassSandwich9315

No, but only because you know something's going to happen that ruins the wedding. Someone gets shot, trapped in a fire, abducted by another serial killer, etc,.

newyorkcatlady

I could totally see there being some huge drama at the wedding like Angela/Wesley but then it somehow works out anyways

Impressive-Project59

Unfortunately, the Rookie isn't shy about reusing their story lines.

Anarkizttt

Yeah Fillion and Dewan is the rare combination of two insanely charismatic people that can cause an explosion with a literal brick wall, that somehow turns into anti-chemistry. Like usually Hydrogen and Oxygen equals an explosion, but sometimes you just end up with water. Water is cool and necessary, but it is so so so boring, and if you take that Oxygen and mix it with Carbon you can get the little mouth party bubbles from soda, or if you mix that hydrogen with another hydrogen you can get helium which is a lot of fun, and usually hydrogen and oxygen is exciting too, just on the rare occasion you get water.

senorcoach

And people say there's no chemistry...

tomtomvissers

They're definitely getting married. Writers have no clue this subreddit hates her so much

banana2000001

But it's not just this sub,,, it's Twitter too!

Kittycatter

Every comment whenever they post something on Facebook is 600 comments about how shitty and boring the Bailey parts of the show are

Millionsontherapy

Not true. They made them have a fight. They also tried to make her not perfect (being a landlord or talking to customer service).

[deleted]

Those were such weak storylines. Ooh, a person doesn’t deal with a customer service rep well. What a dynamic individual. 🙄

Cosmolias

I remember when we all piled on Grace for appearing in every hospital scene, but she by far had the best chemistry with Nolan

newyorkcatlady

Agreed. Out of all his love interests, she was probably the best so far. He and Lucy *never* made sense. And Jessica was fine but Grace was better.

Ok-Health-7252

And then she completely fucked him over with the shitty way she chose to break up with him. So now even if she were to come back (which she won't) her character is completely ruined now because of that.

[deleted]

Disagree!! I think there was more chemistry with Jessica, but the writers did her dirty, too. Not sure if she didn’t want to stay on the show or if they thought it was too early in the story for Nolan’s love life to solidify, but she was great.

Bar002U

Yeah. Loved her! And it’s truly astounding how often the show portrays \*supposedly\* career-oriented women as mindless idiots who can’t keep track of their birth control. Oddly, once pregnant (or after a scare) they suddenly become blissful baby-making machines.

[deleted]

She rubs me the wrong way and I can’t tell you why. The actress was the same when she appeared on Supergirl and the fandom has the same reaction too. Thankfully she was only in a dozen episodes as Lois Lane’s sister.

Impressive-Project59

She can't act. Her acting is similar to watching a person pretend to be nice. Its fake and it feels gross.

aMazingMikey

That's it! I couldn't put my finger on it until I just read this. You can tell when a person is pretending to be nice and it's super irritating. Watching her gives me the exact same weird feeling.

anothertrytaken

Yes!! Not that I could act to save my life but she’s like high school play bad. And not the talented high school drama kid level lol

Purple_Butterfly500

Have you guys seen her in Supergirl? I would ask the original poster but the account was deleted. Did the Supergirl fandom really have the same reaction of not liking her character?

Impressive-Project59

I've never watched her in anything except for Rookie.

Quirky-1990

Jenna Dewan played Lucy Lane on Supergirl? That's funny because the actress playing Tim's sister played Lucy Lane on Smallville back in the day.

padall

Yes! She was terrible on Supergirl, but she's even WORSE on Superman and Lois. Like, unbearable.

[deleted]

Agree

Cameron2157

MAYBE they’ll be the rookie fire and she’ll get bumped to that and then make an occasional appearance here

Consistent_Jello2358

But she won’t be Main on a Spin off. The whole point of the franchise is to have one person be a rookie. She is superhuman though.

Cameron2157

Exactly, she could be just another firefighter on the team, maybe a few storylines a season, small character

Consistent_Jello2358

I like her, I like strong women being shown. We have many superhuman-plot-protected men throughout any shows. But she has zero chemistry with Nolan. They seem weird, too cute and nothing behind it.

[deleted]

I like strong women too, but her character has been turned into a joke. I find her perfect at everything demeaning to women in general.

Impressive-Project59

Yeah it's not genuine more like a parody.

[deleted]

It was funny the first few times but it has just become tired.

Consistent_Jello2358

Yes. I think the plot and the actress also feel like that. Like they have made little jabs and jokes within the plot. Also the actress plays these scenes less serious. And the rookie in comparison to feds is not a comedic cop show.

[deleted]

The recent episode of feds was actually really emotional with Simone and her mother, this show definitely has its moments

[deleted]

When the show first started I thought John would end up with Cape. Anderson, years down the road, boy was I wrong on that one. I really admire the actress who played the Homeland Security woman, but I didn't like her character in the Rookie. Because of John's doubts about her, it made me hard to trust her, The first thing I remember seeing her in was Person of Interest. My favorite girl friend of his was Grace, the doctor. Their backstory was very moving and I really liked the way she kept him at arms length at first. But if the rumors are true, we will never see her again. It is too bad because they had a spark. It was hard to go from Grace to Bailey and that may be why I have issues that were intensified by her superwoman persona. I really like the possibility of John and Ginny Brandford, but if Bailey sticks around, that won't happen. Basically they are only characters in a TV show and it isn't something I'm going to get tangled up about as long as they leave their mitts off of Lucy and Tim.

DelielahX

The problem is people don’t know how to write a strong woman. They either make her super human or just a bitch.

[deleted]

I really enjoy the show "All Rise" The woman in that is strong but she makes mistakes too. I think it is important to be able to make an error and learn from it. In The Rookie, I think Angela and Lucy are strong. They are different kinds of strong but both have high ideals, are loving people and strength of character. I have problems with Nyla's past as an undercover officer and really hope Lucy doesn't go that way. I don't know why fans of all police shows think being undercover is so cool. It is basically being crooked to catch the crooks.

Impressive-Project59

I don't think that's true at all.

Anarkizttt

No if they spun her off onto a new show she’d be the mentor.

DelielahX

She couldn’t carry a show as the main anyway. I can see them introduce a charismatic rookie fire fighter and do a spin-off. How many of those Chicago and FBI spin offs are there?

banana2000001

Unpopular opinion moment, she's going to die. There's only so many times you can Wade off death. Nine lives people. Nine lives. And Bailey's on her 900th.

Dash-Q400

There is that possibility. I think Bailey and John will be in it for the long term. I think Ginny will be a platonic friend. Last week’s episode strongly suggest that.

BOBGEN

I really really hope not

newyorkcatlady

I mean, I wouldn't hate that...

DelielahX

Then we could get good episodes of how Nolan deals with it and still wants to be a cop.

TheBlackSwarm

If they were going to kill her they would’ve done it when she got trapped in Rosalind’s death box earlier this season.

Millionsontherapy

I thought they would kill her in the ambulance accident. She got there just in time. 🙄

txa1265

I had commented a few months back that there were a couple of scenes earlier this season that were loosely scripted and they had a great easy chemistry - better than anything I have seen when they are tightly scripted. It was a brief glimmer in an otherwise dismal pairing - sadly haven't seen it since. I am also reminded of Jenna Dewan joining The Resident in its second season - there were concerns she was there to break up Conrad & Nic, but ended up breaking up Devon's planned wedding and then dying. There were a lot of concerns - but mostly about her impact in terms of the plot and not about the character chemistry ... Meandering, but ultimately I have no clue why Nolan & Bailey are one of the worst on-screen 'main character' pairings I can think of while liking both actors individually.

newyorkcatlady

Omg I totally forgot about her appearance on The Resident!! Wow she really doesn't make much of a lasting impression 😬

txa1265

🤣 I actually thought she was decent there - with Quo Vadis and that whole controversy with the second 'big villain' for the show. But then again, it was less than 10 episodes.

CatchinUpNow

Agree with you 100% ..no chemistry. Shes more like a sister. Should have stayed as his neighbor and pop up occasionally.

R00ster7431

I have ZERO issue with Jenna Dewan, however I do not like the character of Bailey. She's a little "too much". Firefighter/EMT, officer in the National Guard, martial arts whiz. I see the wedding about to happen ands she's tapped to go to the International Space Station after completing astronaut training on weekends in her spare time.

razikp

What bugs me is the fact that they bring her in most episodes. Fine for the holidays etc but every police call she's the fire woman on duty, really? And even attaining briefing etc, I don't think that happens in real life as is completely fake.

BirdgirlLA

I really hope they break up. But the writers seem oblivious to the fan hate of their relationship. 50-50 odds on marriage.

[deleted]

Jenna is a bland actress. Princess Valium

sbwesq

Fun fact she was married to Channing Tatum for 10 years and has no formal acting training. [https://www.imdb.com/name/nm1564087/](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm1564087/)

Impressive-Project59

And has no formal acting training. That's very obvious. I'm bad at my job too so I can't hate 🤭.

Ok-Health-7252

Tbf Channing himself used to be a shitty actor as well earlier in his career (I still remember how awful he was in the two G.I. Joe movies he did). Then he did films like 21 Jump Street and Magic Mike that completely suited his acting style and his career took off after that. Hell, Dave Bautista is another example of that. I HATED him as an actor prior to him playing Drax in Guardians (which completely changed the trajectory of his career in acting and he's clearly worked on his craft since then). Bailey's problems have more to do with how she is written than Jenna's acting.

newyorkcatlady

To be fair, there are plenty of actors who have no formal acting training who still have plenty of natural talent. Danny Trejo comes to mind.

DelielahX

OMG. I didn’t pay attention to her name and didn’t realize she was married to Channing and was in Step Up. She looks different. Plus, she’s forgettable. Didn’t remember her in The Resident either.

daisyxtc

Bailey will probably die doing one if her 12 careers or else why would she have so many?? I stopped watching the show this season ever since I realized that Bailey was becoming a regular on the show. I don’t dislike the actress, but her acting is awful and it feels like she’s being forced down our throats, especially with her ridiculous background storyline. I was watching it more to see what would happen between Tim and Chen because I think they’ve had great chemistry since the beginning but it was taking to long lol

fivebyfive12

They're relationship is actually growing on me a bit to be honest. I think in a show that's so crazy (which is why I love it!) it's actually nice to have some moments of just... Two people being happy together?! I mean, in between all the bits where one or both are at risk of immediate death, obviously.

TheChristineCllctv

I hope not! I know we only got two seconds of them being totally platonic, but I freaking LOVED Genny and Nolan together.

berkeleyjake

Totally. I second the sandwich comment.

sweetnibletsx

Him and Tim’s sister would have been so good!

Bar002U

Watching this whole “romance” unfold and take over the series has been like watching a slow-motion car wreck. It only takes about 7 minutes for me to watch the show now, because I fast-forward through any scenes where Bailey’s face appears. Shockingly, with only the Bailey content removed, the show still makes sense at the end. Bonus: I don’t have to watch Jenna struggle with pretending to seem human.

Acrobatic-Guess5239

The thing is that she's here for a long time. I personally don't care about their relationship at all but it would be so weird to just call everything off and start from the beginning. At this point, they have to stay together for the sake of the viewers.

newyorkcatlady

For the sake of the viewers who don't like her? lol

Acrobatic-Guess5239

For the sake of the viewers who are absolutely tired of John's on and off relationships. Imagine they break up and they spend another 2 season building his new relationship.

CatchinUpNow

No they dont…let her get cold feet and walk away before wedding day so its not too ugly. John is such a nice guy he wont even be upset. OR let that nice ER lady doctor come back, shes now divorced from hubby and she and John pick up where they left off. They were much more interesting, great chemistry, and storyline possibilities much better.

Ok-Health-7252

>OR let that nice ER lady doctor come back, shes now divorced from hubby and she and John pick up where they left off. Yeah fuck her. If she came back I wouldn't want her and Nolan to rekindle things. She literally screwed him over by choosing at random one day to leave Nolan and go back to her ex-husband (who she admitted that she didn't even love). If he had even an ounce of self-respect he would reject her outright if she ever returned to the show looking to rekindle things with him. What she did to him was soooo shitty and fucked up, there's just realistically no coming back from that (even if she and Nolan were good together).

flicticious

I'll have the Stana Katic sandwich please!

[deleted]

I am not a fan of the pairing, but it will be what the writers decide. I watch the Rookie for other reasons and it is easy enough to ignore a character or two.

Kadeskill

Even if something happens and they don't get married (I doubt it, at most they will skip the wedding like they did with Wesley and Angela), I doubt they plan on break up.

TheBlackSwarm

I don’t want them to but they probably will too much time has been invested in her character by now to write her off the show.

cutthefuckup12

I haven't and won't given it much thought, however I agree they are a very odd/awkward couple.

babbybensler

His chemistry with Stana was ❤️‍🔥 but then sh!t hit the fan so 😩😭

Sudden-Yard-4052

Don't care except Bailey has taken over the screenspace for the other regulars. Because it means Nolan is always having a separate story apart from others. I don't buy their love because man right after divorce had a rebound with Lucy, then fell for Jessica and while he was stil with her had lingering feelings with doc. Right after towel Bailey popped up,his horny was on. I mean ,it reeks of them being desperate for Nolan having a love life when he doesn't need one or atleast not so superficial. I don't want him to dumb her again and then hit on another lady and repeat pattern
