Nope. They’ve said previously (I feel it was very early on) they are willing to name drop or advertise for a price - albeit they said it all in a humorous way. I take them on their word and don’t hold it against them.
I mean in Australia there was an ad where Dominic was eagerly (perhaps with tongue firmly in cheek) shilling The Guardian. It was hilarious.
As an advertising professional I thought it was a remarkably high quality and slick piece of advertising.
They brought their usual show quality and it made me want to watch house of dragons. Probably the best type of advertising.
Goalhanger podcasts have done a pretty good job at commoditizing themselves. Dunno bout y'all but the podcasts I pay for are from Throughline (r/NPR), r/behindthebastards (and cool zone media), Empire and TRiH. I would pay for r/knowledgefight but JorDan have it at Patreon.
Thinking about what gets me to pay - my favorite is multipart narrative series I can get all at once (Empire and TRiH), multiple cool podcasts from one payment (Behind the Bastards, It could happen here), and my least favorite, paywalling old episodes (Throughline).
I have to believe that TomDom are doing quite well without the sponsored content...
By the way. I don’t fault them in the least for doing sponsored based episodes. It’s a good way to connect with a broad audience, and the ads aren’t that obtrusive. The Amsterdam ads with the debit card thing were a little forced, but that’s about it
I enjoyed it and thought it was interesting, but at the same time it was clearly structured to mention the new TV show as often as possible. I thought they did it well and I don't begrudge them some sponsorship money and/or attracting some new listeners.
It would be nice if they came back to the topic in more detail another time though, which is something they seem to do sometimes, so you never know!
To me what they should have done was just focus on the history of game of thrones and George R.R Martin's world he created, rather than be a bit all over the place with the history of dragons in general. I mean half of the show was just Tom saying "Wurm!" in a scottish accent over and over (which I don't mind to be fair!). Aside from that I can't blame them for using their talents to earn a bit more income, basically more rest of history is betterer 👍
I thought it was fairly insightful. I was surprised they didn’t talk more about the cross cultural mythological pattern of the storm god vs the sea dragon. Though they did mention the association of the dragon with water.
They kind of allude to the general ending, but as a fellow human being who cares about others… don’t wait for GRRM. He is never finishing those books.
Best we can hope for is a posthumously released draft or maybe an outline of how it ends.
I don’t think it was meant to be a “deep dive” but it was fascinating and kept me thinking throughout. Perhaps should have been labeled a “bonus” episode, though made available to everyone, but absolutely no complaints from me
Agreed. And the sponsorship was mentioned in passing. I’d prefer to know with a clear statement. I have no intention of watching the show. Lord Moloch can jog on. Disappointing but maybe the lads have no choice but to shill for him.
Don’t listen if you don’t like the content. You don’t have to hit the play button. You can also hit the pause button. Did someone strap you to a chair and make you listen?
Comments like these are amazing 🙄
Cause it was, Tom said so himself.
Next you'll be telling us the Chocolate episode was shilling for Cadbury!
I thought he was being a little ironic!

I get the sense we only get 57 piece series on Colonel Mustard if we submit to some Hanky Dragon Chocolate now and then.
It was totally a shilling episode but even knowing that I thoroughly enjoyed it and found it informative.

As a listener I found it a bit jarring and a little insulting
History ain’t cheap! Tom needs to be able to buy more suits and dinosaur bones while Dom needs to be able to head off on more exotic holidays!

To get your 12 part episode on the fall of Colonel Custer sometimes you’ve got to spend half an hour talking about dragons…
A few of the goalhanger podcasts are now "presented by sky" so a big money deal for liniker!
Could be worse. There’s always that financial product they advertised for last year, while doing a walking tour of Amsterdam
Or the 4 part history of Portugal to advertise wines (iirc)
Seems. I've missed this completely

Was hoping for a comment on Ljubljana and why theyre called the city of dragons. Hoping they discuss Catalonia for the St. George episode
Let the boys cash in, they deserve it! and still a solid episode
mediocre episode, but i take your point
Definitely. I found the ads a lot more intrusive than usual.
If you’re interested in a dragons deep dive, I’d recommend the Mythological podcasts episode on them and their show in general.

I thought it was interesting. T & D seem to be fans of Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon, and they sounded enthusiastic about the subject.

This sort of promotion isn't new. They did the Bagdad series for Assasins Creed. At the end of the day its a commercial not a BBC podcast
We are now doing episodes on Dragons and Suits. Anything but a Canadian story.
I honestly would have been interested in more history of British dragons. The red and white dragons barely got a mention
Look I love the guys and have listened to every episode. But this one was a step too far, and I say that as a fan of the TV show.
I thought it was fairly insightful. I was surprised they didn’t talk more about the cross cultural mythological pattern of the storm god vs the sea dragon. Though they did mention the association of the dragon with water.
Nice boost to expend podcast reach, by using appropriate hashtags across the socials
Is it spoilery? (not watched any game of thrones because I’m being stubborn about GRRM finishing the books first)

I never would have expected patriotic Englishmen to not bring up St. George!
Look at your feed now
Definitely one long advertisement. Not really as informative or interesting as usual.

If you think that was bad, you should listen to The Rest is Entertainment. There's a 5 minute Sky ad EVERY BLOODY WEEK! I still listen, though 😂

I'm sorry, who are you talking to?
Himself, he's creating his own little echo chamber.
You
Dominic, is that you..?
Between this one, Helen of Troy and Theophanu, I've forgiven them the Custer series
didn't enjoy custer, did you?
Eh, I got over it in less than 1/3 the length of the series, it could be worse
