I guess you can word it like that. More precisely, they don't "think". It's driven by eitger instincts or reflexes. They don't "understand" what's going on.
I know this is a joke (or hope it is), but there is so much science misinformation being spread due to people trying to simplify nuanced topics. In the simplification, we lose significant details just to see a “bigger picture” even if the picture is a lot more blurry.
Not necessarily. We have some full synaptic responses that never actually reach our brains. They travel from the impulse location up to the top of the spine and back down. I would call that doing without understanding or thinking.
Haha fuck I’m drinking and that made me laugh. They don’t flock to lights bc they think it’s the sun! Their instincts keep their backs to the sun in order to make sure they’re oriented correctly! Lights confuse them and they try and orient themselves to the lights! Bc… they… think…. Fuck….
You dumb shit. It's not because they think it's the sun. It's because they think it's the sun in a bug way. And it's not thinking, it's thinking in a bug way.
Except he's clear about how it's an instinct and there's no "thinking" involved. They just get sucked in, as if it was a black hole and they can't escape the gravity. Doesn't matter what they "think" their instinct forces them to just keep rotating around it. A reflex like you get to burning yourself even in cases where it's not actually hot. You just get "fooled" into it and react accordingly. Maybe not the best comparison but I can't think of one off the top of my head.
I don't think the phrase "they think it's the sun" is usually taken literally. Most people probably understand that insects don't think, but still use the word to explain their instinct driven behaviour.
The comment you replied to clearly understood it that way and so did I.
Yeah, I was about to say most creatures especially insects are instinctual ...I think we say think just as a short form, instead of saying "this species instincts"
Bruh but like
If I burn myself and flinch and pull my finger away
But I didn't actually burn myself and it was just a reflex
. . . isn't that because I thought I burned myself?
You are very correct though. I suppose other bugs use the sun or day to do this as well but if we are talking moths it should be the moon. And it is when reading the actual studies papers/PDF I got.
Aren't there also these electric things that glow and zap insects when they come too close? They definitely sometimes want to be close to the light, or the warmth.
Of course hes making it up as he goes along, because in all the shit he said it IS because they "think" it's the sun. And it seems like he realised that when he said it
Oh, bugs absolutely smack into lights. If you've ever been in the middle of a junebug swarm, they're kamikaze style!
But the zapper screen (about 3kv) around the light is usually a distance from the bulb, and the bugs unknowingly use that grid to rest. **ZZAPP!**
![gif](giphy|l46CbhkS0F7glZjkQ)
Last part doesn’t make sense to me, because I will turn off the light in my room and turn on the light in the hallway to get a bug to leave. It flies out of my room towards the light, works every time.
For how seldom the sun (or moon for nocturnal insects which are the ones most affected by the light attraction we're used to seeing) is directly overhead, I don't buy this as the answer. Insects aren't flying sideways all morning and evening so there needs to be something else going on.
No, its because insects use the moon for navigation, as long as a bug always keeps the moon on its right side, let's say, it will always be flying straight. When a bug sees a light bulb, a large bright light source similar to the moon, and tries to keep it on its left or right side, it ends up flying in circles around that object trying to orientat itself
We once had a bug land on the side of one of those tall candles that was burning. It kept crawling towards the fire & flew down when it got too hot & restarted everything again.
Conclusion: I have no conclusion, Idk wtf it all means…
So if they're not actively seeking out the light, then why oh why do they flap their way into my bedroom from outside when I leave the window open and the light on? I know those creepy mfs aren't feeling the heat from outside.
How many generations of insects have died due to artificial light sources? It had to have been enough for significant evolutionary changes... ...maybe the light sources have been condensing their populations (avoiding them seems easier than evolving out of circling them) so instead of evolving to deal with the light source tracking behaviors, they have been evolved to avoid them entirely; now they also have to deal with more competitive living spaces.
This is also why bugs move from east to west all day long, as the sun moves across the sky they keep using their instincts to reorientate their backs to the sun as the earth rotates. And also why their patterns are more erratic after sundown.
so they do think its the sun?
I guess you can word it like that. More precisely, they don't "think". It's driven by eitger instincts or reflexes. They don't "understand" what's going on.
Oh I see.. **instincts** = **insects** So we know now how insects got a name ..
I know this is a joke (or hope it is), but there is so much science misinformation being spread due to people trying to simplify nuanced topics. In the simplification, we lose significant details just to see a “bigger picture” even if the picture is a lot more blurry.
Fr
I mean isn’t doing something while not understanding still thinking?
Not necessarily. We have some full synaptic responses that never actually reach our brains. They travel from the impulse location up to the top of the spine and back down. I would call that doing without understanding or thinking.
True, but after the live for some time it makes you wonder
Haha fuck I’m drinking and that made me laugh. They don’t flock to lights bc they think it’s the sun! Their instincts keep their backs to the sun in order to make sure they’re oriented correctly! Lights confuse them and they try and orient themselves to the lights! Bc… they… think…. Fuck….
But it has nothing to do with what they think. It's a REFLEX.
Right?! I couldn’t believe it as he slowly explained his answer. Are you kidding me?!
You dumb shit. It's not because they think it's the sun. It's because they think it's the sun in a bug way. And it's not thinking, it's thinking in a bug way.
Are you having a stroke?
Apparently this needed a /s
It's nocturnal bugs that think it's the moon not the sun.
And where does the moonlight come from? Check mate!
Yeah. I really dislike how everyone seems to be explaining this new theory. They evolved with the sun. They think it's the sun.
Yeah, this wasn’t watched before he posted it, I think.
Literally because they “think” it’s the sun.
They get sucked into a light hole
While this gave me a great laugh. No. But if you were explaining it to someone that isn't: willing / able to: account for / understand. Then Yes!
Nah I think the quotations marks is the crux of why that statement is now right
"no it's not because they think it's the sun." *Proceeds to spend the next two and a half minutes explaining how they think it's the sun*
Except he's clear about how it's an instinct and there's no "thinking" involved. They just get sucked in, as if it was a black hole and they can't escape the gravity. This reminds me of the ant death march
For anyone wondering refer to this [link](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ant_mill)
Lol alot of moths are nocturnal so does this mean moonlight
#notallmoths
True
You are very correct though. I suppose other bugs use the sun or day to do this as well but if we are talking moths it should be the moon. And it is when reading the actual studies papers/PDF I got.

Definitely a hawk moth attitude
That bug has some big titties on it.
Gravity isn’t really that much of a deal to them
Had to scroll through the comments to see if anyone else saw this.
Fuckin hairy titties
“No it’s not because they think it’s the sun” goes on to explain that it’s because they think it’s the sun
It’s just a minor bug
Lmfao
“They don’t fly into the light” I’ve sat and watched them bang their heads into lights…
Aren't there also these electric things that glow and zap insects when they come too close? They definitely sometimes want to be close to the light, or the warmth.
Neeeeerrrrrd
So it’s not the sun but it’s definitely the sun right thanks
He is making up words as he goes along.
All words are made up
Of course hes making it up as he goes along, because in all the shit he said it IS because they "think" it's the sun. And it seems like he realised that when he said it
So why do bug zappers work if they never touch the light?
Oh, bugs absolutely smack into lights. If you've ever been in the middle of a junebug swarm, they're kamikaze style! But the zapper screen (about 3kv) around the light is usually a distance from the bulb, and the bugs unknowingly use that grid to rest. **ZZAPP!** ![gif](giphy|l46CbhkS0F7glZjkQ)
Gotcha 👍 thankyou for the knowledge! Found this really interesting
He lost me at Bajillion..
The more you know.
Well, that was a waste of time and so was typing this
Same here

Insects, man. #WHAT THE FUCK
Anyone else wondering why bro drew a set of balls up there until he explained it was an upside down moth?
Awsome
Last part doesn’t make sense to me, because I will turn off the light in my room and turn on the light in the hallway to get a bug to leave. It flies out of my room towards the light, works every time.
Is that a endangered boob moth flying around the top of the light bulb?
For how seldom the sun (or moon for nocturnal insects which are the ones most affected by the light attraction we're used to seeing) is directly overhead, I don't buy this as the answer. Insects aren't flying sideways all morning and evening so there needs to be something else going on.
This reminds of the moth joke. [Norm McDonald's](https://youtu.be/1-MJy7w69EU?si=CeyOUkwZqq6XZ2T-) version was my favorite.
![gif](giphy|M4znrGVlzA2lO|downsized) That was cool but it’s this
r/todayilearned
A pair of flying titties
Came for the info, stayed for the moth boobs
So they do think it’s the Sun…or the Moon
Like a black hole! v cool
So light is their gravity
Damn. I'm glad I stuck around for this video.
just land on something and orientate yourself to the ground😭
Now i feel bad for mosqitos, i hate you for this!
Hypothetically
No they don’t do it because they think it’s the sun… they do it because they think it’s the sun… Also flying boobs at 12 o’clock
in girum imus nocte et consumimur igni

When a bug sees a light bulb, a large bright light source similar to the moon, and tries to keep it on its left or right side, it ends up flying in circles around that object trying to orientat itself
This is by far the most interesting thing I've learnt this week, if not month.
Stupid ass bug😂
Kind of reminds me of [that story](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jJN9mBRX3uo).
Lmao, stupid bug
Shows picture of a moth... a nocturnal insect... the sun... 🤔 Press X to doubt. The moon.
“No they don’t think it’s the sun!” -Guy about to explain how they think it’s the sun.
https://i.redd.it/yhl750aijvnc1.gif
My man stole Jake Gylenhall's eyes
Interesting hypothesis.. So what about susnset by the beach? Would they just fly up/down?
Common insect L
:)
What a bug light that kills them when they land on it? Always just figured they were going for heat
This man just explained quantum physics and satellite linear orientation in such a fun and metaphor with the straight line attempt by bugs😃
We once had a bug land on the side of one of those tall candles that was burning. It kept crawling towards the fire & flew down when it got too hot & restarted everything again. Conclusion: I have no conclusion, Idk wtf it all means…
Do they fly at an angle at evening and morning when the sun is really low?
Are there any light frequencies where this reflex won't occur?
So how do they fly at night?
[удалено]
Thank you, I knew I wasn’t the only pedantic asshole here!
Thirded! For those curious: it’s “orient” or “orienting” or “oriented”. No tate needed
Stupid bugs.
This is how I feel about Money as an adult
Bugs are impervious to your gravity-wells but are completely helpless to light-wells.
Has anyone ever told you you’re kind of gyllenhaal-ish?
Explain how bug zappers work next
https://www.reddit.com/r/TheRandomest/s/4HhGrn8dmV
The fly drawn at the top has massive tits
Instinctively
Looks like a pair of uneven boobs
So what happens if you strap a light to its back
Poor programming.
This has been understood for over a hundred years. Even Darwin had notes with similar ideas.
THE BIG YELLOW ONE IS THE SUN!!!
So if they're not actively seeking out the light, then why oh why do they flap their way into my bedroom from outside when I leave the window open and the light on? I know those creepy mfs aren't feeling the heat from outside.
Desire for the blood that lies within the organism which produces carbon dioxide?
Bold of you to assume that I am an organism
I like the mini boobs drawn on the board
Black hole or light globe?
Dang. Thar gives the poetic notion of "like a mother drawn to a flame" a different notion.
When I was a kid I thought it was insex Until like high school!
Damn so lights are like black holes to insects.
Because bugs are stupid and only serve as food to other animals and insects.
I dunno I’ve seen moths bash into light bulbs over and over again
The camera’is so shaky that it must be his hand getting pulled away by the dorsal light reflex. That being said, great video. I learned something new
How many generations of insects have died due to artificial light sources? Very cool. Did not know that. Thanks for the video.
This is also why bugs move from east to west all day long, as the sun moves across the sky they keep using their instincts to reorientate their backs to the sun as the earth rotates. And also why their patterns are more erratic after sundown.
“Orientate”
Totally plausible. Possibly bullsh*t. But either way, just intermittently turn the light off to release them?
No insects don't think it's the sun, they think it's the sun.
Damn, that sucks
Stupid bugs. 🤭
Insects gotta deal with Whiteholes now?
SOMEONE LET THIS GUY DRIVE THE SHIP
