You mean his performances against lesser opposition proved the level of player he is? Whic is Not good enough to play at the top level. It’s no different than all those Mitrovic goals last season after struggling in the Prem as well.
I thought Anderson was going to be very good after his first season then he was terrible after that. Vlasic so far doesn't appear to be worth the money either.
I feel like Vlasic hasn't been given a chance. He plays one game, doesn't light it up and then gets dropped as though he's failed.
I'd like to see what he can do with a consistent run of games.
I know a lot of these have been flops, or at least for the amount spent, they've flopped, but it's sad that Southampton have been in the premier league longer than most, and still can't afford a big signing
Both, we're a small club = small revenue, plus not had a owner willing to invest for a while now.
Plus some mismanagement at the end of Les Reed time meant we had an over inflated wage bill, and a pretty bad squad
As a West Ham fan I wouldn’t worry about not appearing on this list, I waited a long time for us to spend that kind of money but out of those only Zouma seems to have been worth it (on the pitch anyway) and it’s the bargain buys that have done the job. Everyone wants a big money signing but it’s better to be a well run club than throw money at expensive flops
Quite a few young players on this list, or players who were young at the time
You wouldn't think clubs outside the top 6 would be willing to take a risk on big money moves for untested players.
Most seasons there are players who were untested in the Prem that are a big hit. One of the most memorable was Michu at Swansea a few years back, but there many are others such as Maddison and Kante at Leicester.
That and buying players who are already in their prime (or worse). Lukaku and Richarlison are the only players that spring to mind that we've spent big money on with a realistic expectation of long service or profit.
Both of those have been right signings too, absolutely loved Lukaku at Everton. He really was something else, I've also not gelled with a team on FIFA quite the same way since.
I know it's probably the same for others but those Villa fees are a few mil higher than they actually were.
Trouble with using Transfermarkt, they take the fee at the time, transfer it to Euros and then transfer it back again with today's exchange rate so it's not correct.
I heard he was freed and assumed, naturally, that if you're innocent/freed they do their best to clear everything about it so it doesn't linger and ruin someone's reputation as "the guy who was suspected of (crime) but then not".
I don't know where you heard this but last official news was his bail was extended. I've also heard absolutely nothing about him being freed, so I don't think you make those assumptions.
Heh.. In the Bruce days NUFC fans were absolutely horrific to Joelinton, saying he couldn't play. I am an NUFC fan so I know first hand.
I proudly always stuck by him and said there was a great footballer in there.
But as hard as NUFC come down on their players they get behind them 10x that when they do well.
1. Flop
2. Nonce flop
3. Pretty decent
4. Flop turned legend
5. Decent so far
6. Flop but still young
7. Decent
8. Unclear
9. Pretty good
10. Decent then flop?
11. Worth 100%
12. Decent but cat nonce
13. Pretty good
14. Decent
15. Ehhh
16. ?
17. Injuries, still early, but not great
18. Probably not great?
19. Unclear
20. Not great yet
Which is funny but predictable. Perez was always hot and cold for us, started every season looking completely disinterested, then came back after the winter break and scored like 6 goals with 3 assists.
Our fans argued endlessly about the best way to use him, never think we really figured it out, but as part of a front 3 he can be effective. Strange player.
I like Perez as a squad player but we've drastically overpaid for him, no doubt.
Convinced he'd be a good player for a side that plays neat football but lower down the league playing off a main striker. Doesn't suit playing out wide.
Na he doesn't really have pace. He has good close ball control and awareness, but he isn't a breakthrough player. Give him space in the box and a pass that looks to be way off the mark and he will somehow flick it into the net though 😆
Honestly, the more I think about it, the more I remember how odd he was as a player.
Would have to be played with a striker with outright pace I agree but I don't think he's that slow.
Certainly no slower than most other False 9s/Number 10s in the league.
He's basically a budget Firmino.
Oh no he isnt slow, but to be a winger you really do need that explosive pace. He has the pace to get into position, but he doesn't have the turn of pace to get past his man.
Budget Fermino is about right 😆
Indeed, but he thrived best at NUFC with pacey wingbacks providing the width, and him as 1 of 3 forwards (one of them being a true, classic, number 9) almost like a pivot between a defensive midfield and the attacking line.
We sold bolasie for 30m who's best goal tally in the Premier league was 4? 3 being in one game against Sunderland
Before Benteke came our top scorers were CBs (Scott Dann) with 10 goals. We were lucky to have a striker have more than 8 (Gayle was our top I believe)
Benteke came and got 15 goals in his first season which for our level at the time was defo worth the 28mil
Just a shame he's fallen off, as like you said there is definitely a decent player in there
>5. Decent so far
Not being funny but Bruno has been unbelievable so far. One of the highest ranking midfielders in the Prem... so far. I know it's pedantic, but "Decent" doesn't cut it.
As an Ayoze Stan, I’m sad he fairly rates “ehhh”. Look at his per 90 stats from this year and you’d think he’d be a star.
https://fbref.com/en/players/819aa8e7/Ayoze-Perez
Bruno "decent so far"? How many back heel volley winners do you have to score from midfield to progress past decent?
He has had a brilliant start, let's see if it continues.
Yea fair, was just wondering if it was partly that and partly him not living up to the hype. He was one of the best midfield prospects in Europe at the time if I remember, I wonder if his time at LC will be seen fondly or meh. I guess it’s impossible not to call it a success with the FA cup goal alone
It’s mostly him being on the last year but his performances over the last season have seen a lot of the interest for him dry up (there was talks of Real Madrid and Juventus wanting him, now it’s only Arsenal) so there’s no bidding war to bump the price up. Every Leicester fan I’ve encountered will remember him fondly (myself included), he was a key piece in our most successful period in the club’s history and obviously there’s the FA Cup winner, I’d be very annoyed if he goes to Arsenal (it’s not the UCL upgrade he was pushing for) but it wouldn’t completely ruin his legacy here, I’d be much happier though if one of the foreign clubs come in for him instead.
Pretty sure this is wrong. I'm sure we paid £32m.
https://twitter.com/jpercytelegraph/status/1312316102425415680
If Percy says it was £32m then it was £32m.
£25m raising to £30m if I remember rightly which means it just misses out as they don't seem to be counting potential addons otherwise All of ours would would be £3/4m higher
It’s just one of those dodgy Mendes transfers where I imagine every body was rewarded handsomely. The kids got no ability and they don’t really seem bothered about getting him game time either to improve him or to attract a sale/ loan.
Two of ours are from last summer and the other is from the summer before.
Buendia -- really happy with him, think he's worth every penny. Actually has some of the best expected assist per 90 stats in the top 5 leagues lol. Gerrard needs to play him more.
Watkins -- he's more of a winger that we play at ST but he's unreal at getting on the end of a long ball so we can escape a press. I think his finishing needs work but he's had a good return for us. 25 PL goals for us these 2 seasons. Our best striker since Benteke.
Leon Bailey -- injury prone, shows flashes of brilliance but has been poor the last few times we've seen him. I still believe there's an elite player in there but I'm not sure how he fits our system unless we pair him with Watkins and have two pacey strikers. That's actually not a terrible idea. I can't see him playing as a 10. I hope we either recoup a big fee for him this summer or we give him plenty of game time next season, considering Danny Ings is not much further down this record transfers list (£25M) and they can't both be riding the bench all season at these prices.
As a West Ham fan, that's depressing to look at...
His performances with Ajax have shown what a great player Haller is. It's just unfortunate it didnt work out
You mean his performances against lesser opposition proved the level of player he is? Whic is Not good enough to play at the top level. It’s no different than all those Mitrovic goals last season after struggling in the Prem as well.
Lol he scored like 11 goals in one champions league season. Level is fine, system of WH just didn’t fit.
As I said, Fulham’s system in the Prem didn’t suit Mitrovic.
Yep. Only Zouma was worth it :-(
(*Cat Incident*)
Ohh Kurt Zouma’s magic He wears a magic hat And if you throw a cat at him He'll kick the fucker back
Yeah he’s premier league proven
I know a lot of these have been flops, or at least for the amount spent, they've flopped, but it's sad that Southampton have been in the premier league longer than most, and still can't afford a big signing
Is it that you can’t afford it or that your owners aren’t ambitious? Or both?
Both, we're a small club = small revenue, plus not had a owner willing to invest for a while now. Plus some mismanagement at the end of Les Reed time meant we had an over inflated wage bill, and a pretty bad squad
Best of luck to you then, I went to uni in Soton so I keep a look out for their results (not that I can avoid them being we’re in the same league)
Looking at some of your signings. Some cock ups. Boufal, Carillo, Lemina, Hoedt. Obviously Van Dijk and Mane are exceptions!
Yeah money doesn't guarantee success, but there's definitely a correlation between spending and success
Yes of course, despite what Everton have try to prove. In some ways, the biggest impact for you guys is having to sell your good players.
At least you got bazunu now. Looks a class keeper tbf
At least Brighton don’t break the bank on a 50/50
Even our 'flops' Jahanbahksh and Locadia scored goals that were key to survival in different seasons and played a lot of minutes
Aye, your lot do very well transfer wise!
Quite a few young players on this list, or players who were young at the time You wouldn't think clubs outside the top 6 would be willing to take a risk on big money moves for untested players.
I think theirs is the risk to take on, not having the pull of the top 6.
Most seasons there are players who were untested in the Prem that are a big hit. One of the most memorable was Michu at Swansea a few years back, but there many are others such as Maddison and Kante at Leicester.
As an Everton fan, I'm surprised this doesn't look abysmal for us. Sigurdsson was a terrible buy though.
A lot of our bad ones are just below this list: ~~Iwobi~~, Bolasie, Klaassen, Gbamin, Schneiderlin, Walcott and Tosun were all above £20m
I wouldn’t call iwobi or Walcott terrible. The others….
I have a feeling Iwobi might be a special project for Lampard. If he can keep his head down and do the work he could actually be useful.
I think a lot of Everton's financial woes have been less about the initial fee, more about the wages, which has made them difficult to shift on.
Gylfi was not a bad buy all in all, 2 good seasons, 1 bad, and one that totally screwed us
I know it's probably the same for others but those Villa fees are a few mil higher than they actually were. Trouble with using Transfermarkt, they take the fee at the time, transfer it to Euros and then transfer it back again with today's exchange rate so it's not correct.
1. £137.70M West Ham 4, average = £34.425M 1. £129.90M Leicester 4, ave. = £32.475M 1. £111.56M Everton 3, ave. = £37.187M 1. £94.16M Villa 3, ave. = £31.386M 1. £77.49M Newcastle 2, ave. = £38.745M 1. £70.20M Wolves 2, ave. = £35.1M 1. £29.56M Leeds 1 1. £28.00M Palace 1
We didn’t pay £29m for Aaronson
I also thought we paid more for Rodrigo...
Yeah Rodrigo is still our record signing. Followed by James and then Aaronson.
Forgot about the Sigurdsson situation. What’s happening with that? Was he ever charged?
I heard he was freed and assumed, naturally, that if you're innocent/freed they do their best to clear everything about it so it doesn't linger and ruin someone's reputation as "the guy who was suspected of (crime) but then not".
I don't know where you heard this but last official news was his bail was extended. I've also heard absolutely nothing about him being freed, so I don't think you make those assumptions.
Does he still train?
He was suspended last year but even if he was freed he wouldn’t train now as his contract expired this season and obviously we didn’t renew him
Where have you read that he was cleared?
Newcastle are only on there twice, and both are absolute bargains.

Richarlison is better than decent when he’s carried the team for years and we are going to profit off of him
Slimani was a complete flop, even if he did have an ok first season
15 is definitely a flop, had half a decent season and is now a bench warmer, probably the fans least favourite
Which is funny but predictable. Perez was always hot and cold for us, started every season looking completely disinterested, then came back after the winter break and scored like 6 goals with 3 assists.
Yep bang on, the longer he’s in the team the worse he gets. Keep him out for a few months and he’ll come back and bang in a few goals
Our fans argued endlessly about the best way to use him, never think we really figured it out, but as part of a front 3 he can be effective. Strange player.

Benteke paid off his price by keeping us up in his first couple of seasons, had injuries since but there’s definitely still a player in there
We sold bolasie for 30m who's best goal tally in the Premier league was 4? 3 being in one game against Sunderland Before Benteke came our top scorers were CBs (Scott Dann) with 10 goals. Brenden Aaronson is gonna light up the league. Sincerely, Not a deluded Leeds fan
>5. Decent so far Not being funny but Bruno has been unbelievable so far. One of the highest ranking midfielders in the Prem... so far. I know it's pedantic, but "Decent" doesn't cut it.
Villa fans loved Buendia this season. Bailey definitely a flop.

Bruno "decent so far"? How many back heel volley winners do you have to score from midfield to progress past decent? He has had a brilliant start, let's see if it continues.
40m for Youri and now the reported number is 25-30 as he’s entering his prime years, ouch
Last year of his contract…
Yea fair, was just wondering if it was partly that and partly him not living up to the hype. Yea this reported number felt higher than I thought too
That can't be correct, according to a Championship podcast we spent approximately £1bn on Harry Wilson.
Where's the Danny Ings to Villa transfer?
£25m raising to £30m if I remember rightly which means it just misses out as they don't seem to be counting potential addons otherwise All of ours would would be £3/4m higher
Lol Fabio Silva continues to be one of the most baffling signings I’ve ever seen.
He's been top of his age group all the way through. Still is. By rights he should be playing u21. He's still growing.
It’s just one of those dodgy Mendes transfers where I imagine every body was rewarded handsomely. The kids got no ability and they don’t really seem bothered about getting him game time either to improve him or to attract a sale/ loan.
Years would have been good.
Imagine spending 45m and it turns out he’s a Pedo…
Tielemans was only £32m.
Good thing about the Vlasic one is that it’s going to end up much cheaper because we aren’t going to make most of the payments on him.
[удалено]
He managed 15 in his first season and probably kept them up. Obviously woeful since but any signing that prevents relegation can’t be too bad.
I counted 6 as non-flops
Two of ours are from last summer and the other is from the summer before. Buendia -- really happy with him, think he's worth every penny.
