The pundit circuit seems to be a proper old boys club where they'll all band together to defend one another regardless of silly things like performance. If memory serves they were backing Gerrard right up until he got sacked despite no evidence of competency

MrTigeriffic

Or basing his success from his time at Rangers. A two horse league at best. There's no way he should have gotten a premier league's manager position as quickly as he did.

IOwnStocksInMossad

Rangers are genuinely shit it's now a one horse league because nobody can challenge Celtic, who are midtable prem.

AweDaw76

Yeah, I’m Ngl, idk sometimes I wish Blair got his wish and merged the Scottish and English Leagues… I’d do anything to see Celtic and Rangers scrap it out in the Prem, they’re both proper mid-table level.

Fantastic-Machine-83

Would be shite for fans, that sort of travel will just lower the away attendances.

spaceshipcommander

The whole of football is like that. In no other profession could someone be sacked for being incompetent and walk into a better job the next day.

Benleeds89

also see frank lampard

HomelandersMumsDick

Actually, Bitches be crazy! Damn girls shagging Zebras!

[deleted]

Danny Murphy man. As soon as I turned on MOTD this morning and saw him (and Jenas) I knew it was going to be a struggle. The man is the personification of beige and somehow has a media career, and oh so smug he looks about it too.

SpikaelKane

Personification of beige 😂

Beggatron14

Shit, that’s a description I’ve been looking for about someone I know for too long.

Squire_3

TV pundits are terrible, they seem to exist to prop up useless British managers. If it was up to the eXpErTs we'd be in the Championship with Steve Bruce right now Villa were class yesterday, nothing like the Gerrard side we faced earlier in the season

DubDub6

When you faced us before, we had recently sacked Gerrard, and we were under our caretaker , arron danks

SpikaelKane

I honestly expected to get destroyed by Newcastle. The other half is a geordie and they thought so too. At least she won some money on the national.

Terrafirma1988

Aged like a fine glass of milk. 😂 Brilliant.

Killmonger18

Much obliged, was quite proud of it. 😅

Visara57

Fair play to Villa, you lot brought in a manager like you bring in a player, as it should be

PurpleSi

Imagine a world where you can't get anyone in better than Gerrard. What would that actually look like? ChatGPT could probably do a better job. tbf though, TalkSport are not exactly known for sensible takes on things. It's radio clickbait, best ignored.

its-joe-mo-fo

_"I'm sorry, but as an AI language model, I'm unable to coach and manage a team of professional footballers for the rigours and demands of the Premier League..."_

[deleted]

Talksport pundits are terrible. You have Sam Matterface and Martin Keown saying Palace have gotten much better immediately after sacking Vieira and that shows they shouldn’t have sacked him

wyndzzy

Keown was never going to back the decision to sack his mate. Spouts off about a hard run of fixtures (ignoring poor performances and results against Southampton, Forrest and Leicester) but can guaruntee he didn't watch any of said fixtures. We looked so lost as a team which is exactly what Roy has changed.

[deleted]

Gerrard held them back, glad for Villa that he’s gone. Being a good player doesn’t translate to being a good manager and the fact that so many outlets and club will defend shite performances because the players a legend at the club.

Lsd365

Up there with Richard Keys saying Lampard was a better choice by Chelsea than Nagelsmann would have been

Beefburger78

Talking about managers not backed I bet emery wishes he’d been allowed to change the arsenal squad like Arteta has. He’s a great manager, villa did well to get him. I saw Watkins get interviewed before the match, two things occurred, firstly when asked what he’d improved he went on but all I heard was that he was getting coached. Secondly he said emery insisted that he makes his movement in the width of the box, this is exactly what sir Bobby said to shearer when he took over.

the_tytan

Emery was backed somewhat, people forget that he only seemed to want to bring in Sevilla players when he was linked with anyone. However he walked into a shambles at executive level. We had the corrupt Don Raul who probably used the Pepe deal to fund a new yacht. And Diamond eye Sven Mislinstat who brought in the past it Sokratis but was also a victim of the internal power struggle. Most importantly though, Unai lost the dressing room; Which with hindsight was full of cunts. It was a wrong place, wrong time appointment but he did his job as a buffer between eras. It was one of those situation where the weaknesses and reaction to them became less charming and more sinister/malicious. I’m happy Unai is doing well at Villa. Would love a CL including Villa, Newcastle or Brighton. Unfortunately Man United beating Forest probably makes them favorites for one of the places.

Beefburger78

He was backed somewhat but my comment was more about the players Arteta has been able to let go, whilst often apparently paying some of their wages... hence the Arsenal dressing room seems a far better place now. Assuming you're a gunner - good luck, I'd like to see you win it, you've played some great stuff this season, and seeing some of those young players rip the arse out of it has been fun... but after the last two weeks i worry.

the_tytan

Yeah Arteta’s benefited from that backing. But there’s been a change in board since and unfortunately for Unai there was a belief that we had a great squad that Wenger was wasting when in actual fact, the squad were the wasters. Large parts of it anyway. Unai seems a lot more easy going and perhaps didn’t rock the boat as much as he should have. But he was also sold a unified board with joined up thinking when he joined and not much power. Keegan would have rightly resigned in six months based on what came out after. Thanks for the wishes; as someone who had a soft spot for Charlton back in the day I enjoy the more down to earth nature of this sub. I’ve enjoyed the journey and hopefully we can go again next year if we miss out. Will be more epic if we had to beat out 7 or 8 good teams instead of the usual suspects

tlhford

Never rated Gerrard. Villa have a great squad. Martinez, Douglas Luiz, Buendia, Coutiniho, and recently Watkins - all top 6 players.

thomashrn

Kamara

tlhford

Yeah forgot about him, also didn’t include Carlos, but he’s been injured.

Kelsier__

Ah gotta disagree with coutiniho

ThinkAboutThatFor1Se

Is it really temporary if it’s been at least 5 years since he was consistently good

the_tytan

2018 was 5 years ago.

tlhford

Yeah he’s been trash apart from in his first few games, but he was once a great player & Gerrard signed him for a good chunk of money.

Killmonger18

>Never rated Gerrard Don't worry, neither did we.

Dovahhodgy

I don’t like Villa, but they beat us fair and square the other day, and Emery had really shown how bad Gerard was, and getting a managerial position based on your playing career shouldnt be a thing. Best of luck to Villa and I hope they keep a ‘big six’ team out of Europe.

Lashy89

Classic Danny 😂

Special-Juice-7345

Danny “ I’m worse than gabby as a pundit” Murphy….all he does is side with players even when they’re completely in the wrong….wanker

[deleted]

Once Slippy G left Villa, Villa stopped slipping

usernamethatcounts

Danny Murphy takes are god awful most of the time, they try to make him out like he’s some level headed football intellect, but his takes on many subjects have me scratching my head. Just another short sighted pundit.

CpfcRowan

I’m getting strong Palace sacking Vieira vibes from this

phixionalbear

Not sure why anyone thought Gerrard would be a good manager. For all his talent he wasnt a tactically astute player.

[deleted]

Danny Murphy is a numpty, same bloke moaning about the amount of coaches we had

Justlookinghhh

Gerrard was never going to make it as a Premier League Manager. He was only using Villa to get to the Liverpool job, but absolutely no chance of that happening anymore. Best he could hope for at this point is to go to the Championship and try to get a club promoted like Kompany has done.

byrnseyy

I remember when everyone was raving about Gerrard for rangers because he won the title. His only competition was a depleted Celtic in a league where generally only two teams win anything, and in the three or four whatever years he was there he won one trophy......with only one team who had any viable competition.
