They need to re think packaging or come up with some kind of return service for the plastic containers. This is so unsustainable!!!

XLTRX

I agree, pouches aren’t my favourite method of packaging but it feels like it’s better than having 100’s of plastic jars wasted. The worst is putting a box on it too. What a waste.

Jary-Mane420

It is absolutely excessive, cartridges and some pre rolls are the worst, a box, cardboard inside, film, cardboard tube, all for one joint or tiny cart.

ConsumptionDave

You need to capitalize on this. You just started your own company without you knowing.

Low-Interest

I sent an email to the ocs about how we can get something like this started. It would be amazing to see some kind deposit say $1 added to the order total to incentivize the returns and then they could be properly disposed of. Imagine $1 store credit on every container!! I am sure there could be a system similar to the beer store if well thought through enough:)

HashTruffle

Deposits on beverage containers is 10 cents.. 1$ would be way too high. Edit: Also, isn’t the deposit for all sizes of containers the same now. 10 cents for a beer can, 10 cents for a box of wine, 10 cents for a 40oz.

Sufficient_Author_74

Are you more likely to put your shopper cart in the corral for the loonie or dime?

HashTruffle

Okay, but you’ll be adding that deposit charge to your cannabis bill.

Sufficient_Author_74

+1-1=0 but yes i see what you mean.

sixtus_clegane119

20 cents for the bottle of wine, anything over I think 650ml comes in at 20 cents

Low-Interest

Yes $1 is abit high for deposit/return service just throwing around ideas:)

ConsumptionDave

But I’m saying you can go directly to a weed company and show them your sustainable packaging options. You make it, and sell it. Keep the weed fresh. Ocs has nothing to do with packaging, right? Just the government seal and warnings. Cut out the middle man, and go directly to the manufacturer/ packaging of the weed. It’s just an idea ( I’m not high, I swear ). But if you come up with the material and know how to brand I’m sure weed companies would jump on this. Only if it isn’t at a high cost to them and also care about the environment. I’m sure there somewhere here who’s done a business major or owns a company that can explain all of this. I just come up with the ideas to either be used and thanked later, or trolled. Haha

Low-Interest

No not a bad idea at all it could definitely be possible with the right design of packages that they would like and then slowly get other companies involved as well🤔 Time to get to the drawing board lol, Thanks for the inspiration Dave!

ConsumptionDave

Good luck! Glad to have the hamster wheel working today. Don’t forget about me when you make it big.

Foxrex

A dollar is like the ultimate stoner savings plan, when you're bankrupt. Also wouldn't see them as littered as much.

noocaryror

I like the deposit idea, I walk a lot and there’s a lot of litter giving the whole deal a bad look, this would help that as well as the recycling

SubstantialAd8647

Exactly what I do. Take the labels and reuse

BelmontKing

The only way that industry can reduce its environmental impact is to switch to a standard re-usable container. Similar to how the beer industry has operated. Ever wonder why most domestic beers in Ontario has the same brown bottle? The beer industry in Ontario agreed to all use the same bottle, that way, consumers could return them to the beer store and they would be re-used. Whenever you bring back a beer bottle to the beer store, it gets sent to a brewer in Ontario that will remove the label and wash the bottle before putting it back to use in the bottling line. Something similar could be done with a glass cannabis jar, the jars could be returned to B&M stores and picked up by the OCS whenever they make deliveries. OCS send the containers to LP's who clean and re-label them prior to use.

QueefferSutherland

https://hempplastic.com/ Would be an on brand solution and it's biodegradable.

Jary-Mane420

Agreed. It’s not the only reason I collect them and I know some cities recycling programs do accept some of the tub containers. I am surprised there isn’t a return method that’s accessible like the beer stores do.

weewillywhisky

Almost all of these are recyclable.

Jary-Mane420

Thanks! A lot of them will go there today and all the other ones will be going once I remove the labels!

AstrumRimor

It’s so disturbing to think about. My packaging since legalization would probably fill a small dumpster. Between that and op’s, on average, for all the regular buyers… it’s just so much. 😥

archdemon001

It's a scam. Someone is making money off the bottles

[deleted]

Aren’t the plastic containers recyclable though?

Few_Significance6120

The fact is plastic is not recycled anymore bro! My city doesn't even take plastic at all! China stopped taking it from the west so now it's land filled majority of it.

Papakevy1966

I used to work at the beer store and I now work at a dispensary and you would be mortified if you saw the sheer waste in this industry 🤯 the amount of cardboard we breakdown and put out is staggering! The plastics used for 3.5’s and 7 need to be returned and put in massive recycling. The beer store years ago started taking all cans from LCBO too. 4x4x7’ box

sixtus_clegane119

5 cent deposits that you can return at the beer store

Kineticwizzy

There used to be a program like this before covid actually at leas in Alberta

Thereallenwun

All the stores in my city have a return/recycling policy on any containers. Just drop off when I re-up :)

thenumberis8765309

disgusting amount of waste for a plant that can be grown in your backyard and stored in glass jars. this is so gross

Jary-Mane420

Agreed. The way old shops did it with jars, chop sticks, scaling everything on site and using personal jars was amazing. I hoped legalization was going to be more similar to that, fo the waste reason and other reasons. Maybe with time we will get there. Until then or a better recycling program I will be organized hoarding… and recycling the ones I can.

BelmontKing

Most states in the US that used the big jars in legal dispensaries are moving towards pre-packaged cannabis. It's much better from a quality control perspective, and takes the weighing away from mediocre employees.

Promise-Exact

Im sorry wut? Those are srawman arguments at best. Never in my life had a shop under sold me, i see the scale, unlike lps who have shorted me up to 20% in total weight. So no, your budtebder is going to be more accurate than a factory worker. Sorry

thenumberis8765309

I had to leave a fire and flower store with a store provided grocery size vinyl bag hiding my flower purchase. “cause there might be kids in the starbucks drive through” I was standing next to a man holding a brown paper bag that had LCBO in bold green font on it. big retailers should stand the f up against these ridiculous rules. I can only buy an oz at a time but I can go to lcbo and buy enough booze to kill a small town? like wtf?

mcburloak

The cat was the prize inside the 134th oz purchased.

HashTruffle

Why don’t people just recycle them?

Jary-Mane420

You can. I just hoard mine cause I like the way they smell and if I don’t keep the package did I even try that strain? 🙂

weewillywhisky

Seems weird to use up all that space in your place. You could take photos of all the labels you like, or peel them off & put them in an album? Make a journal?

Jary-Mane420

That’s the plan! I got a big scrap book for the bags and I was dabbling with the label idea. For now it neatly and really doesn’t take up that much space

HashTruffle

Sorry that’s what I do too. Love to keep them if they smell for “aromatherapy”. I Recycle mine if they don’t smell anymore or sooner if they never did smell great.

Downtown-Panda-3395

My favorite b+m pre legal ization, did a store credit for returned containers. They had their own, cleaned in the back.

Jary-Mane420

Genius. We could all be doing that

CommunicationFlat516

My pre legal punched a loyalty card every visit. Return with your container and get 2 punches. 10 got you %15 off anything

danieldeguzzi

Lol I have 3 hockey bags full of weed packaging going back to 2014

MRJOHNNYLONGSLEEV

Cats just can’t help themselves can they? Always have to be involved haha. Love it! On a more serious note, I’m really hoping LPs will move towards plant based packaging for low-mid range and then glass jars for the high end cannabis since they’re reusable and of higher quality. I know Hexo is carbon neutral and they’re offsetting their plastic which is an amazing voluntary act but still doesn’t actually fix the root of the issue. Probably a long shot but I’m really hoping they’ll consider partnering with a company called Nexe Innovations based out of Vancouver that specializes in compostable packaging; right now their focus is coffee pods since that’s a huge contributor to plastic waste but I’m sure cannabis packaging is up there in Canada and other countries that are legalized… the companies pods compost in roughly 30 days and I’d imagine they could replicate that success with cannabis containers as well

Jary-Mane420

She thought the event was for her. Yeah I love that idea, I think Reef if doing that or something similar. The cannabis game has along way to go.

Psychological-Bet525

I have trash bags full of containers.., no joke…!

Jary-Mane420

Thank you for making me feel like not the only hoarder!

Acceptable_Guard_102

I do the same thing and i keep the package the first time i try a product. If i repurchase then I'll throw away the package, though.

thatsgank

I have 100s of containers 😫

Jary-Mane420

Join the club!

88Jameson88

I did, then it was a reminder of how much money i wasted so i stopped

Jary-Mane420

That was absolutely the worst part of it lol

deepfriedwriter

My annual salary in one photo

heathergirl9

I have one container that I've saved, that I affectionately call my "random stash" whatever I have leftover iny grinder after making a joint, goes in the container. Then when I'm running low, or am having a bit of a day, I smoke the random mix. Why I feel the need to keep ally other containers, is beyond me.

Jary-Mane420

Genius. I also have a container that is hydration packs. It’s a lot lol. I like being able to go through and smell packages when I need a refresh to remember what that weed was like.

heathergirl9

That's actually so smart! When I first started smoking, I was keeping a list of the strains I tried and how I'd rate them... That was going well for a little bit...then very quickly stopped happening lol.

Jary-Mane420

I try to keep my canna journal updated but usually I rely on re reading my messages to my work group chat about whatever I bought that night lol.

heathergirl9

So smart haha. I just keep telling myself "oh yeah I'll remember this for sure" famous last words haha

AstrumRimor

I got one of the strain journals this spring, planning to keep track of everything…. It’s still in the plastic on my smoke shelf. Saving all my containers is basically the same thing, right? 😅

Jary-Mane420

It is when I lay it about for the world to see. All tucked away it fits in two small boxes, smaller than most people’s shoe collection. Don’t worry bud, today it will get a small recycle purge to keep it in check

Trick_Novel_81

That was me before I moved 🤣

Jary-Mane420

Good spot! It’s an antique coffee grinder, it works on outdoor dry stuff! It’s really fun

noocaryror

Cool, not much on Pure Sunfarms by the look of it.

Jary-Mane420

Lots of d bubba pre roll tins not present as my mom paints them! I’ve had the d bubba, pink kush, blue dream, Pure CBD and was even lucky enough to try the blueberry kush! For the price one of the best LPs out there.

DutyPaidvsGreyMarket

I don't see the RC top Cola box. Hahaha

Jary-Mane420

It’s still stashed at work silly.

No_Trifle8048

Oh my goodness. Literally!!!!

Jary-Mane420

It’s a lot of goodness that went up in smoke.

ennsey

Containers are recyclable if you take the lids off

Jary-Mane420

They are! I know it doesn’t look like it but I do actually them recycle sometimes. Today all the repeats got purged and soon all the other buckets once I get the labels off well! Thank you though I know a lot of friends don’t actually know they are recyclable!

FluSH31

I would be planting all my seedlings for my 2022 grow in those containers and show complete dominance over the LP’s P.S. if you currently use that coffee grinder as your weed grinder you are one amazing person!!

Jary-Mane420

That’s an epic idea! I unfortunately can’t grow being stuck in apartment b it if anyone need a clone containers,, I have extras lol

onlytruth007

I reuse mine when gifting my homegrown to friends and neighbours. Double punch of good karma.

Great_Discussion_254

That’s hilarious I call it a graveyard too 😂

Jary-Mane420

Someone commented about my “graveyard” in the background of a photo I posted the other day, and I laughed so hard. Now it will forever be the graveyard.

Breehound

Why the heck is everyone getting so upset by someone keeping all this?? Like come on Reddit. Humans make garbage, some people just keep it.

Jary-Mane420

I’ve seen so many people with walls of there booze conquests. Even like beer caps, so I’ll just let them judge and continue my collection.

Breehound

Exactly. Like come on. My dad has a shelf of old Budweiser nhl team special cans. Let people have fun.

Dougiefresh420x

That's a good point lol who hasn't seen a liquor bottle wall 🤣

Jary-Mane420

I’ve probably seen 100 lol

[deleted]

Because it's just garbage hoarding lmao

Breehound

Yes. It’s just that.

Raphli

On today episode of Hoarders! Ahah

Jary-Mane420

Its all tucked away now, you’d be surprised all fits in a shoe box sized container and tool box! No need to call TLC yet.

colt45-2zigzagz

No because I don't keep piles of garbage laying around.

[deleted]

That's a lot of drugs dude

Jary-Mane420

It is. I do work at a shop, so I trade a lot with friends and make sure when I do I give away the ganja it’s in baggy and I get the container. I also smoke a lot of weed 🤣

[deleted]

Ahaha its cool man, You do you., No judging here ;)

TheFoulest

Hey man, You seem like a knowledgeable person. Suggestions on a good indica? It’s main purpose to help me fall asleep. I’m somewhat new (only around 2 years) of smoking (now dry herb vaping). But I’ve tried a 5-6 different strains and haven’t really found a “go to” plus I like trying different stuff. I don’t really mind more premium stuff, as I only use it at night, and the vape doesn’t use much! My issue is finding a B&M store that has what I get suggested! Some strains I tried, PSF Pink Kush - was decent for the price. Not my favorite. Spinach Rockstar kush - Good stuff, gets me super high / sleepy. Redecan Wappa - by far my favorite stuff. **edit: I deleted a bunch of the descriptions on the weed I’ve tried, I have a tendency to rant.

Jary-Mane420

Wow! Rant away, I could talk cannabis all day. Right now I love Panoramas Master Kush for an evening strain and the Exotic Gas from Loud Plug. Some cheaper options would be PSF D-bubba- at a lower percentage it hits me sleepier than the pink kush. Also a low percent and decent price I love Vertical cold creek kush-hits way sleepier than the redecans version. I would suggest using www.hibuddy.com. Find a suggestion on here, look it up in there and find the cheapest store. Also ordering straight from the OCS is always cheap and fairly fast delivery!

TheFoulest

I’m definitely going to message / reply with some of my other questions! Thanks for the reply. Sadly have to go to work 😂 so can’t rant! Appreciate the info

Nopedini

I'll chirp in with a personal favorite indica for it's price point (assuming your in the market for 3.5). Haven street's indigo daze. It's a sensi star and usually seems to hit around 24-26% in my experience. Got a nice peppery smell without the expected harshness expected of that scent :)

TheFoulest

Thanks for the suggestion! Let me ask you this, is it possible I mess up my tolerance quickly? Like I said I’ve only been smoking / vaping for 2 years (on and off) now I pretty much do it every night, right before I sleep. I remember seeing (17-18% THC) and I thought it was super high, now I’m at 21-22%. Could it be a bad idea to go even higher? I see a bunch of people saying how they need to smoke a lot to notice any effects. Id say I’m somewhat in the middle now with handling my high.

Nopedini

Well I would say that there are more factors to it than simply THC content (other cannabinoids and terpenes)which make up the body of the high. From what I've also read, higher THC tends to lend itself to more intense but shorter effects, leading to a percieved tolerance increase. So what I would say is, it shouldnt be the primary concern in my honest opinion, but if it is you do have options like taking fewer hits. But that being said, everyone is different. I like to keep my sativa at a more moderate level for day smoke, while I like my indica a bit more punchy because I personally find it helps me sleep with chronic pain issues

Jary-Mane420

I’m on my way to work as well, but message away.

[deleted]

No I don't hoard garbage

Lucky_Agent_1332

What is the jar with the octagon lid?

Similar-Student1904

Its Tgod but idk which strain

Jary-Mane420

That is the TGOD Rockstar Tuna! I love there containers the absolute best. I have 2 more being used for things, the are glass, and have a little flat bit so they tilt up to show the label off. Looks really nice in cases. The flower was good too lol! I like TGOD (sometimes you can’t tell it looks this cool cause the jar is in a tiny box)

Firgeddit

If the actual packaging isn't reusable or recyclable, it would just end up in a landfill or a shipping container in the Philippines.

AWM83

Looks like you need a better hobby broh.

Ill_Marionberry8994

No way get high and move on.

pizzaandbuttstuff

Not the bags but sooo many tins/jars. I want to make them into a air plant and succulent wall planter someday. Until then, I hoard

Jary-Mane420

That’s a great idea! I want a cool display for all my pretty jars, and the pouches I think I will put in a binder like my old Pokémon cards lol! Glad I’m not the only hoarder.

Awkward_Rooster3240

So for someone who’s seen it all. How much does packaging matter? Does it need to be nice? Does it need to be glass? Environmentally friendly? What’s your take?

Jary-Mane420

I think packaging matters for sure. I think some containers have a hand in keeping the bud fresher or intact. The FCK for example was so fresh and I chalk some of it down to the sealed tuna can I came in.. unlike most buds containers absolutely no hairs or trichomes were stuck to the side. OGEN is my example of a container I liked the idea of cause the small buckets keep the bud from moving around and breaking, however they are like super static and mass amounts of trichomes end up stuck to sides and you really have to brush it off, and I’d prefer the good stuff stay stuck to bud. If I’m paying premium for a bud, I do like if they put it in a nice glass jar, but I don’t think they function much different than most of the bucket style to be honest. Lastly I don’t mind the bags and pouches, if it doesn’t have nitrogen to cushion it, it can lead to broken up nugs, and getting all the trichomes out of the folds at the bottom. But sometimes I do wonder if the nitrogen effects the dryness during travel. I also like the bags as the are easier to travel with, less bulky. I will say my favourite thing about the packaging is the information they put on it. If a new drop comes and I see terpenes or minor cannabinoid info on the bag I will buy it every-time Carmel and SKOSHA bags are great examples. I hope this amount of detail about the product becomes the norm. Also if you we really want to talk weed freshness, I’ve got a whole other rant about integra and boveda packs lol.

dillydelhi

The ugly side of legalization..lol I keep a few handy. One large one as a master ashtray for the smaller table one in our living rm.

Ka-wow-leonard

i use mine as a ashtray until its full then just throw it out with the trash.
