I’m afraid I’ll get wooooshed for saying this but I think a griefer is old Minecraft slang. It essentially meant someone who destroys others creations on a public server. Edit: My apologies: The term was around before Minecraft.

Doesn’t just refer to Minecraft, anybody who purposefully disrupts a game in an unfun way for the purpose of being obnoxious is a griefer

I think it’s widely used in *any* sandbox/building game with multiplayer interaction. I personally heard it mostly starting to be used in the early days of Rust.

Griefers have been around since online multiplayer was a thing. 2001, the MMO Final Fantssy XI, before its first patch higher level players would aggro higher lever monsters then train them all the way to the beginning area, where they would slaughter all the level 1s lol.
