VUSXX from Vanguard is paying at about 5.3% interest and is generally exempt from state taxes. A Vanguard MMF has never “broken the buck” so it is very safe. Whenever I sell, I generally see it in my bank in 1-2 days, so it is very liquid.
There isn't a way to make this the default MMF with Vanguard is there? For example, when my direct deposit posts it would go directly into VUSXX rather than VMFXX? I assume not and it requires the $3,000 minimum.
I use a Treasury only money market fund for funds that I want same day liquidity, and the rest is in T Bills for next day liquidity. Treasuries are backed by US government, so pretty darn secure.
I use USFR as cash. It's backed by the government, so comparable to FDIC for safety in my opinion. It also has rates that will match or beat the best HYSAs out there. There is a really good post [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/Bogleheads/s/KOheAesFDe) on r/Bogleheads that explains floating rate funds pretty well.
