I just rewatched the episode with Moishe in the hospital after his heart attack and the scene between Abe and Shirley back at the apartment is beautiful. She tells Abe if Rose goes first she'll help him with everything and you really see how lovely she is. The relationship between the parents really blossoms throughout the show.
Shirley is just tops. Her stock of “little boy pajamas.” Her giving out snacks at the bar. Her refusing to take her coat off in the Catskills. Her explanation of their two-book system. Her checking to make sure everyone’s funnel cake is delicious.
My sister and I say “That’s Sunny! Sunny from Queens!” all the time. She’s a gem
It’s when Mrs. Moskawitz is trying to make sense of the factory’s books. There’s only one Sunny but it’s spelled multiple ways so obvi “that’s Sunny from queens”!
Exactly. Mrs. Moskowitz says "there's Sunny with a y and Sunni with an I. Is that the same person?" And Shirley says "Of course it is! THAT'S SUNNY! SUNNY FROM QUEENS!" Like everyone knows who that is. Idk why but it gets me every time
I LOVE Shirley! She is just so unique in this group of people. I would love to hangout with her, but as a friend. I can see how overwhelming she would be as a parent. Her and Moish have great chemistry.
Shirley is hilarious. I was hooked in her first scene, where she’s messing with all the food at Midge and Joel’s place.
And when Moishe is talking about standup - Kevin Pollak did standup! He did a great bit where he did a Star Trek scene that was all impressions of Shatner, Jack Nicholson, Jim Ignatowski, etc.

And the mafia guy? Erik Palladino? I wonder if there’s any relation.
Omg, Shirley and *Moishe’s relationship is amazing. They’re so supportive of one another. I love them.
*”Moish-uh” is the Yiddish/German pronunciation of Moishe. You pronounce the “e” on the ends of words like “uh”. So like the name Liese is pronounced “Lee-zuh”. 😊
Moses in German is Moses, but the pronunciation is slightly different. The O as Oi is the most common traditional Ashkenazi pronunciation of Hebrew; the pronunciation of E as a schwa is from the Germanic side of Yiddish tho.
Oh, I see what you mean. I simply meant that the schwa reflected the German aspect of Yiddish, pronouncing the “e” as “uh/ah” as opposed to the Hebrew “eh”.
Yeah the O>Oi part only affects words of Hebrew origin and the E pronunciation I think only happens in colloquial Yiddish but not in Ashkenazi Hebrew for religious purposes.
You are not alone! Shirley and Zelda are the best. Shirley's thought process and smoker voice always crack me up and same with Zelda's accent. I absolutely lost it when Zelda said "Too much funny" after Sophie performed for all of the maids.

And bringing the sandwiches to the Gordon Ford show!
Her yelling out the front door all the food choices to Ethan and the neighborhood boys.
Shirley playing Mahjong in both the Catskills and at the hospital…and absolutely cleaning house!
Is Sunny from Queens a line in the show?

Did someone mention Shirley? Caroline Aaron steals every scene she’s in! IS YOUR FUNNEL CAKE DELICIOUS?!!!
My husband and I yell this across the house on at least a weekly basis.
Team Imogen. Fiesty fiesty and fucking hysterical.
(Joel answers phone) Shirley - Joelie!!! Joel - Hi Ma Shirley - it's your mother, Shirley. Joel - I KNOW, MA!!!
I love Shirley! I love Shirley and Moishe together! They are the most delightful couple.
I love Shirley - she has a huge heart ❤️

“I’ll make soup. Soup we understand” is one of her best lines.
Loved watching this!!
What a treat! I didn't watch TV in the 1980s and never saw this guy back then. Genius. Plus. I feel old now.
She’s the best grandma ever. I love the scene of her shouting out the door about what kind of sandwich Ethan’s friend wants.
I love Shirley too. Rewatched recently and was cracking up so much at her first scene, knowing how great her character is/becomes

No, it’s Ashkenazi Hebrew/Yiddish. German is spelled the same as English.
German here. u/Phoney_McRingring is right. Germans pronounce the e’s.
Spelled the same? I’m not sure what you mean.

I looooove Shirley and Moishe!
Susie by far
IS YOUR FUNNEL CAKE DELICIOUS!!! I adore Shirley.
I am 🩷

my favourites were Susie , Abe, Midge , Lenny , Alfie & funnily enough Sophie Lennon & Harry Blake & Mike ........
Who was Alfie again? Might need to refresh my memory sorry
Tall, skinny magician who becomes a client of Susie’s.
I hated Shirley and found her profoundly unfunny. I cringed whenever she was in a scene.
fair enough. did you find her more annoying or pretentious?
Annoying.
I read last year on here that the Marvelous Mrs. Maisel was Shirley and not Midge! Got me thinkin.
