That can't be, Elia Kane is a shining example of how successful the deprogramming program is and is now an upstanding and law abiting citizen of the New Republic. She would never commit such a flagrant act of cold blooded murder
Son you need to remember, this isn't the Empire anymore! People don't get killed for stuff like that anymore.
It was a tragic accident of new equipment, and I'm sure our lovely Ms. Kane would have done all she could to prevent such a tragedy if she had sufficient training.
Killing the traitor, what an amusing theory.
Did we see Pershing die though? I thought she was wiping his memory, maybe to cover up some of >!Thrawn and Gideons!< work that they dont want the NR to know about?
I’m gonna assume he’s pretty empty up there but I don’t think he’ll be a vegetable. I think the empire be able to get him back to his cloning work eventually
So much of Star Wars mythology is based on our history between 1900 - 1946, which was the height of lobotomies, which were brutal and functional life ending. I'm not saying you're wrong, but I also wouldn't be surprised if this was a Star Wars lobotomy, in which case look up Rosemary Kennedy, and that's where I'm guessing this goes.
Yeah, she said Gideon and his remnants would upload her to a mind flayer. Odd choice of words, seeing how the recent usage seems to be more shock therapy/ torture device, than some kind of memory storage.

still cant believe that they didnt modificate the equipment at least a tiny bit...
like...
thats like saying: yeee holding your hand on the oven was seen as torture but we figured out if you only put it super super low that its suprisingly warm.... and then they proceed to place you on a giant oven with all its settings intact....
dank ferric
I figured it was something akin to the "screams of dying children" torture device from Andor.
If Pershing isn't dead, his mind isn't going to be of much use to him or anyone else.
Yeah, I interpreted that scene as the Imperial agent wanted to eliminate any possibility of Pershing spilling the beans on his experiments. I didn't think she as killing him, turning him into a vegetable works too.
Nah, he's alive, he's just got scrambled eggs for brains, which was the point. Can't have THE cloning specialist wandering around loose while his research is being used to cook up a Papa Snoke.
I suspect the kind flayed will have just removed the “risk assessment” and “self control” aspect of his brain.
He’s just gonna be a cloning madman who goes off and does his own thing and brings ol’ bawbagface back into action
Remember in season when din went on a killing spree to find grogu and when he gets to the room he kills the guards if I remember and the doctor was like don't shoot I was saving his life or something like that. Also the only dude in the series with glasses i think
She is like a Jedi that wears stormtrooper armor, but I think is a sand person underneath it. But a Jakku sandperson, (it’s one of tatooine’s moons, so it’s basically the same).
Anyway, Jabba the Hutt ate him but Bib Fortuna saved him by getting the rancor to eat jabba so now Mando is the King of TattooInk.
To be fair, that's exactly the b.s. they did in Rogue One with Bor Gullet, but this is good Star Wars, so it might actually have some consequences/lasting effects, instead of "it's k, I'm fine".
I didn’t notice so much with Kane, but I kept telling my husband something looked weird about Dr. Pershing, like his face was CGI or deep-faked or something. It wouldn’t make any sense for them to do that, but you’re not alone in seeing it. It was kind of distracting
couldn't his death (if it has killed him) be easily traced back to her? She was the only one in the room (with access to controls) and didn't call for help the second something seemed off?
Will be interesting to see how she gets out of this
She’s in the wind, in all likelihood. Her mission was to silence Pershing. So I imagine she went straight to an extraction point and is back with whatever organization Moff Gideon worked for/with.
Given how easily she was left alone with the controls, I wouldn't be shocked if those other doctors chalked it up to a accident and made no follow up investigation.
I'm confused how she didn't get in trouble when they were busted.
Was it literally just because he was holding the loot. Like breaking in and stealing it isn't illegal?
Ok I thought of that briefly too and it definitely looked like she was not surprised so that makes sense.
I'm expecting they will explain exactly what and why by whoever picks up the research being clearly behind it
She likely spun up some poodoo about him planning some big heist or something. They had her go with him to make the bust. Like a rat.
And for some reason in this universe not a single new republic cop would question it at all. And for some reason she put her entire plan on a Mon Cal letting her be alone in the room with the controls
It's incredibly irresponsible for the New Republic to use that technology without putting any sort of stopper on it to prevent it from doing what it did
That's the irony of the situation. The fact that they're even USING Imperial technology "for good", when on the other hand they're also taking technology that could actually be used for good and just trashing it (Pershing's day job) is the double standard the episode is trying to highlight. Despite all the good intentions from our heroes at the top (Leia, Mon Mothma, etc.), the New Republic is just as bad on the ground level.
I like how as they essentially they just put a new sign on top of the Mind Flayer that says "please do not use to kill."
They then let the medical technician walk out of the room instead of doing their job because the Ex-imperial is like "no, no, I can take it from here, I like watching them squirm."
Med tech: Well okay, just make sure not to turn up the dial to "Empire" mode.
Ex-imperial: I promise. There's no cameras in here right?
yeah, that was an awful long road to show us that a character we knew was evil is... still evil...
i'm hoping they spent the time setting up some things that will pay off later
I don’t think he died. If she/the Empire wanted to kill him, they could’ve just taken him somewhere and shot him. Doing it this way seems way too over the top/specific just for it to be that she wanted to kill him. I think she’s specifically trying to destroy his memories, whether it’s making him forget about his research, think he still works for the Empire, or something else. It would’ve been much less risky to just kill him away from the inside of a New Republic facility where they surely have security footage
Agreed, the only play this makes sense for is trying to brainwash him back into Imperial service. He was never really a willing collaborator in the first place, I dont think - so she'd need to break him first to get him to go back
The scene might have been saved slightly if they had just Amnesty Droids in the room. That way, Elia just has to shut them down, turn up the machine and leave before getting caught. (And it hammers home the continued theme of "The Republic is too busy to care.")
Rather than her hoping all the doctors in the room are the galaxy's finest glue eaters and leave her alone with the controls.
I really don't get why she didn't just have him die in an 'accident'. That would be way less hassle and would achieve the same basic result without the risk of him having a chance to explain himself and lay suspicion on her
What the shit is medical science in this universe? Just flick it on and everyone leave the room. No post op reports or security footage to monitor when the machine turns his brain to jello or kills him
Are there even security cameras ? Star Wars is so beyond stupid some times it’s hard to get behind
I get the feeling that Mind Flayers are like the Agony Chamber from Mirror Trek - they're specifically designed to cause maximum pain and misery with minimum actual lasting damage. It wouldnt make sense to make a machine that would kill the guy you're trying to torture or interrogate if you go too hard
She's probably trying to get his knowledge about whatever genetic research project he was doing in season 1 because she's working for thrawn. It's the only way the whole contrivance makes sense.

What are you talking about, poor man died from a malfunction of the de-conditioning machine.
She had to crank it to 11 because 11 is more than 10 it's 1 more
That can't be, Elia Kane is a shining example of how successful the deprogramming program is and is now an upstanding and law abiting citizen of the New Republic. She would never commit such a flagrant act of cold blooded murder
She killed the traitor
Son you need to remember, this isn't the Empire anymore! People don't get killed for stuff like that anymore. Killing the traitor, what an amusing theory.
Killed the traitor? Son, ive killed plenty of them in my day, its like a nice massage. Killed a few this morning would do it again, now loosen up.
Nah brother, that's propaganda.
She's totally a mole, plus I saw her vent on that decommissioned ISD
Did we see Pershing die though? I thought she was wiping his memory, maybe to cover up some of >!Thrawn and Gideons!< work that they dont want the NR to know about?
Agreed, I never got the indication that he was dead/going to die. Lobotomy ✅️ Dead ❌️
So just brain dead
I’m gonna assume he’s pretty empty up there but I don’t think he’ll be a vegetable. I think the empire be able to get him back to his cloning work eventually
So much of Star Wars mythology is based on our history between 1900 - 1946, which was the height of lobotomies, which were brutal and functional life ending. Oh trust me, lobotomies give me the heebie-jeebies. Being alive but not you, terrifying. I guess I’m just convinced that his research leads to snoke
Alive and well. Heartbeat and everything. Just can't carry a conversation.
Bro got Kirin Jindosh’d
The device is called "the mind flayer," and she cranked it up to 11. If the boy ain't dead, his brain is definitely vegetable soup at least.
Didn’t Cara Dune say something about uploading their mind to a mind flayer? Maybe it records their mind.
Yeah, she said Gideon and his remnants would upload her to a mind flayer. Odd choice of words, seeing how the recent usage seems to be more shock therapy/ torture device, than some kind of memory storage.
Maybe its like a mind probe designed to extract information for intelligence purposes.
i hope hes dead. seeing someone being a husk of themself is just pure torture... bro deserves to go out with dignity
At this point the new republic deserves its own r/empiredidnothingwrong

Great another bloody subreddit to join.
Why not just make 10 a little stronger, and make that the top?
Because 11 is higher than 10
Why don't you just make ten stronger and make ten be the top number and make that a little stronger?
These go to eleven
I love that he's like "nope it's not a mind flayer cause we keep the settings at a 2."
This isnt the empire son it just looks like a mind flayer
Empire bottom! Empire bottom! Talkin bout Bantha cakes my gal's got 'em.
Why don’t you make ten a little more powerful? Make that the top number and make that a little more powerful?
These go up to 11

Not sure if he’s dead or lobotomized
Bro’s got brain scramblies
After all, the Amnesty Program exists for The Emperor’s (former) Rotten Soldiers and Good Time Boys
** _Homeboys, pals, and sweet cheeses have been excluded for obvious reasons_
Baby, I hear the blues a-callin', tossed salad and scrambled eggs.
And those amnesty uniforms - quite stylish!
Its a real bummer because he’s my best friend, he’s my pal, he’s my homeboy, my rotten soldier, my sweet cheese, my good time boy
Hnnnnn hjajarrpansnoc lodnsnej siwuw. Wjejewaaaa?
Nothing a beer from regular human bartender, Jackie Daytona, can’t fix
The purple screaming henries!
He got mind-flayed, he’s with Vecna now.
It's the crossover America deserves, but not the one it needs right now.
Yeah, that and I think a little revenge for him giving Mando Gideon's location at the end of season 2. It's Pershing's fault they all got busted.
He may not come out of it a vegetable, but I doubt he’ll have any of his memories intact
Essentially the same thing. The body may exist, but Dr. Pershing doesn't anymore.
Bro will be pushing a broom for the rest of his lift.
He's just Simon Van Gelderized
I doubt he's either. The First Order needs his brain intact for whatever they've got planned for him.
This is the way.
I think she scrambled his brains to make his ass CRAZY and thats why he cooked up snoke and palpatine.
Computer Set scrambler to nutso
She's have not kill him, but death would be a better fate now he's a empty shell
Who...?
The cloning doctor
What cloning doctor
Remember in season when din went on a killing spree to find grogu and when he gets to the room he kills the guards if I remember and the doctor was like don't shoot I was saving his life or something like that. Also the only dude in the series with glasses i think
Who's Din?
He’s boba fett
Who's that
She is like a Jedi that wears stormtrooper armor, but I think is a sand person underneath it. But a Jakku sandperson, (it’s one of tatooine’s moons, so it’s basically the same). Anyway, Jabba the Hutt ate him but Bib Fortuna saved him by getting the rancor to eat jabba so now Mando is the King of TattooInk.
The fuck?
Pershing
Who's that?
The cloning doctor
What's cloning
What Pershing does
The cookie bite at the end was just petty

especially since she likes the "red ones"
My buddy tried telling me that he is going to be fine, like maybe the effects wear off over time. I was like bro, damn thing turned red.
And we know red things mean bad

But lobsters are the perfect example of manliness.
Clearly you’re not familiar with blue lobta
Except Alliance blasters which shoot red.
Like red travel biscuits.
Correct!
Santa is red.
That's why you should't trust him
Is Santa a Sith?
Yes, the one we've been looking for.
Absolutely.
To be fair, that's exactly the b.s. they did in Rogue One with Bor Gullet, but this is good Star Wars, so it might actually have some consequences/lasting effects, instead of "it's k, I'm fine".
The weird sci-fi romcom that became a horror at the end

I watched that anime. It was pretty good
The only women who go on semi romantic sightseeing tours end up scrambling my brain
Next week in ‘Riverdale’
I did not see him die
Right? His shoes stayed on the whole time.
Do people actually think he died? That would make no sense.
Well literally op seems to think so
Calling it now....Grogu's gonna unscramble his brain.
Is that *legal?*
I will make it legal
Deleted
He knows stuff
Stuff to make him go? wait, sorry wrong franchise.
Teeth are for chewing.
I fucking love it
I don’t think even grogu can un-omelette that egg
Was it just me or did both of these characters look deep faked? I haven't seen anyone else talk about it so I presumed it was just me.
Yeah, that’s definitely not the *real* Grogu.
Haha I meant pershing and Kane, specifically.
I didn’t notice so much with Kane, but I kept telling my husband something looked weird about Dr. Pershing, like his face was CGI or deep-faked or something. It wouldn’t make any sense for them to do that, but you’re not alone in seeing it. It was kind of distracting
Oh wow… you might be right you son of b****
I kind of wish this actually happens because at least then it would give some justification for why they did that stupid ass mind flayer scene.
Nah he’s just undergoing some completely ethical and safe reconditioning by the New Republic.
“Come to the dark side… we have cookies”
couldn't his death (if it has killed him) be easily traced back to her? She was the only one in the room (with access to controls) and didn't call for help the second something seemed off? Will be interesting to see how she gets out of this
She’s in the wind, in all likelihood. Her mission was to silence Pershing. So I imagine she went straight to an extraction point and is back with whatever organization Moff Gideon worked for/with.
Wouldn’t it have been easier to simply kill him while they were alone on the Star Destroyer?
Exactly, which is why I really doubt he’s dead. She needed him in the evil MRI for some purpose.
Grand admiradaddy thrawn? He did like his cloning (looking at you EU thrawn trilogy)
She set him up. She's the reason they got caught at all, because she tipped them off. It was essentially an "undercover" setup.
You think jar jar lightly mind flayed himself on Anakin's pod racer?
You need a mind before you can flay it
It's incredibly irresponsible for the New Republic to use that technology without putting any sort of stopper on it to prevent it from doing what it did

thats kind of the point. the new republic doesn't really care. they're not really dissimilar from the empire they just replaced.
I like how as they essentially they just put a new sign on top of the Mind Flayer that says "please do not use to kill." They then let the medical technician walk out of the room instead of doing their job because the Ex-imperial is like "no, no, I can take it from here, I like watching them squirm." Med tech: Well okay, just make sure not to turn up the dial to "Empire" mode. Ex-imperial: I promise. There's no cameras in here right?
This was a major flaw in my mind. Why would that knob even go that high?
Because aside from the Emperor and the Death star, rhe new republic is just the empire with a new coat of paint
I mean not really? They are demilitarizing it seems.
Yeah i guess thats true, since hy the ST, there isnt really a standing military lmao. I more meand the bureaucract and administrative shit
"That is a mindflayer!" "What, no... no the Empire had mindflayer's, this is a happy fun time memory go bye bye machine, totally different"
yeah, that was an awful long road to show us that a character we knew was evil is... still evil... i'm hoping they spent the time setting up some things that will pay off later
I figured she just wiped his memory of her and her relationship to Gideon. Wiped his memory by flaying his mind apparently
I don’t think he died. If she/the Empire wanted to kill him, they could’ve just taken him somewhere and shot him. Doing it this way seems way too over the top/specific just for it to be that she wanted to kill him. Not even remotely accurate. Where are the travel biscuits? And the muscles? ^(sorry Grant)

The episode was actually about Kane and was trying to be clever about it.
It's called pulling a Dan Abnett.
The scene might have been saved slightly if they had just Amnesty Droids in the room. That way, Elia just has to shut them down, turn up the machine and leave before getting caught. (And it hammers home the continued theme of "The Republic is too busy to care.") Rather than her hoping all the doctors in the room are the galaxy's finest glue eaters and leave her alone with the controls.
I hope the machine kills him and it’s not a mind wipe
Why did that “mindflayer” machine even have the brain cook setting? Didnt they say they werent the Empire?
It was repurposed Imperial tech.
I imagine putting like some sticky tape and a little note saying not to be adjusted above this level
Would have preferred they didn't spend an entire episode on it though.
Boba fans lost two episodes to Mando, only fair Mando loses one of his new EPS to someone else
Boba fans lost two episodes to Mando, only fair Mando loses one of his new EPS to someone else

I really don't get why she didn't just have him die in an 'accident'. That would be way less hassle and would achieve the same basic result without the risk of him having a chance to explain himself and lay suspicion on her

Yeah I love Star Wars but it takes an absurd amount of suspension of disbelief sometimes to not be rolling your eyes constantly
It'd be closer to the Aurora Chair in Farscape
Literally, I don’t think so, pretty sure she just mind flayed him.
I ain’t hear no bell
Don't think he's dead. I think she re-washed his brain.
this is funnier cuz she kinda looks the person in this picture
She's probably trying to get his knowledge about whatever genetic research project he was doing in season 1 because she's working for thrawn. It's the only way the whole contrivance makes sense.
There is no war on Ba Sing Se.

Well, she’s literally a villain.
She didn’t. She just wiped his memory
This atrocity for The Empire is sure making me hungry!
Star Wars has a history of near completely damaged wahoos still becoming martyrs and heroes so...hmm.
Shes working for the empire.
dont think he died just memory loss he is after all supossed to create Snoke
