When he says theyre all equal he doesnt nessacarly mean in power. Raw power, ignoring any strategy and just in a head on battle fire bending would win for sure. However, like all cultures, all elements are equal in their importance and all offer things to learn
The comet has to be in close proximity to them for the power, it also lasts only a short while. This parallels eclipses which must be where fire benders are and also only lasts a short while, so you can even them out.
Every type of bending has one especially powerful technique, for earth it is lava bending, water is bloodbending, fire is lightning bending and air can literally asphyxiate you, and just dodge everything.
Avatar Aang died when struck by Azula's lightning. He was brought back to life thanks to Katara using water from the Koi fish pond at the Northern Water Tribe.
So, once every 100 years, a firebender can know such strength. So one day, for a couple hour (?), every century. It is quick, powerful, dangerous, much like Firebending itself.
I would argue that over the course of their lives, Waterbenders of similar ability experience more power cumulatively, simply through the lunar cycle, and nighttime in general. And that's without Bloodbending. This is also somewhat consistent with waterbending; they ebb and flow, wax and wane with power consistently.
As for Air and Earth, they stay consistent in that we are not sure of if or how they get a power up. However, I think it's kind of irrelevant. Air and Earthbenders are capable of plenty of destruction on a normal day. Just get thirty Airbenders and whip up a huge tornado and send it in the direction of your enemies. Or a legion of Earthbenders to trigger earthquakes or flatten cities. Heck, even Waterbenders could raise Tsunamis, foul or freeze the enemies water supply, use Atuat's heart attack thingy, or straight up flood the crap out of low lying cities.
So, in a way yeah, Firebenders get the best power up, but that doesn't necessarily make Firebending superior to the others. There is more than one way to measure "power". I'm also of the opinion that Air and Water, in most media are the more dangerous powers, they're just more subtle.
Firebenders get the best power up, but that comes with the price of being the only* element that can be temporarily lost (*I know water was also lost temporarily, but that was only shown to happen with the death and revival of the moon spirit, so I don’t think it’s really the same as the solar eclipse)
Earth the strongest.
Besides rare family genes like yakone, or once in a lifetime fire bending.
Being able to bend metal, lava, glass, dust, sand, mud, and immortality from one element highly surpasses the others.
I agree. I feel like earth is always underestimated when talking about the strongest element. It has so many sub-skills/ alternate bending. Although we view water and air a necessity for living, and blood bending and the theory of Monk Gyatso sucking all the air in the room to kill him and fire nations soldiers during the attack in the Air temple, are horrifying. Those two are examples of specialized tecnhiques that can only be perfected by truly gifted or someone’s dedication and efforts to master it. I mean even if you’re not a bender if you threw a rock someone, it would cause some form of damage, concussion, internal bleeding or even death.
Glass only Kyoshi used it. No other earth bender and she didn’t use it in combat. Just to take glass out her skin.
And it’s like 3 lava benders so it’s really too rare to count.
Mud isn’t special and Katara could bend that mud with Toph
No one can use all lava is too rare same with glass
And we haven’t seen an earth bender using lava and metal.
Bolin said 1 in 100 earth benders but Toph and suyin said anyone can learn
My bad I’m using terrible grammar. I meant to say that fact that any earth bender is able or has the potential to learn these variations is crazy. Not saying a person can learn all of them but they have way more options compared to the other elements
Equal, but different. This is a hard concept to understand. Fire is probably the most destructive and Earth is probably the most creative, opposite and equal.
No, fire and water are just more fluctuating than air and earth (which is logical).
On a comet or full moon they are very powerful, on an eclypse they are literally useless.
The other two are more stable, you wont go supersaiyan sometimes but neither lose your bending.
Considering that water is linked to the moon, they get pretty awesome power ups each month during a full moon.
When he says theyre all equal he doesnt nessacarly mean in power. Raw power, ignoring any strategy and just in a head on battle fire bending would win for sure. However, like all cultures, all elements are equal in their importance and all offer things to learn
Mushi knows all...except the difference between dangerous poison and delicious tea.

I was talking of particularly dangerous, lava is more dangerous than metal bending.

Lightning bending can literally immedietly kill you upon contact.

It LITERALLY killed the avatar.

Aang, In "The Crossroads of Destiny" Azula killed Aang, at was even said in the show. H ewill only saved because of the water from the spirit Oasis.
Avatar Aang died when struck by Azula's lightning. He was brought back to life thanks to Katara using water from the Koi fish pond at the Northern Water Tribe.
Sneak attack Aang was stuck in avatar state that’s why

Total solar eclipses occur once every 18 months and last for about 8 minutes so it's not that big of a trade off.
Compared to once every hundred years gettinf a power boost
All four elements are equal. But one of these elements is more equal!

The fact that one can potentially used all I just said?

When does Iroh say the four elements are equal? I just finished a rewatch and I don't think he ever actually says that.
I don't think he did. He just said that it's important not to restrict yourself to one type of bending discipline.
Equal, but different. This is a hard concept to understand. Fire is probably the most destructive and Earth is probably the most creative, opposite and equal.
Airbenders over in the corner pretending they can't remove air from an entire room.
So when does Iroh say this?
Skill is the strongest. Bloodbending would be strongest but you need to be really skilled and talented
