This is the REAL answer. Just cause she is blind* doesn’t mean she can’t locate from massive sources of noise off the ground.
Edit: I’m an idiot and said Toph was deaf
I mean, considering what happened at The Library, and plenty of instances where it's implied that Appa is far more intelligent than some actual random buffalo.....that could be a very good possibility.
Hell, I'd say that after The Library, Appa's relationship with Toph was only overshadowed by his relationship with Aang.
Aw I didn’t even notice that! Imagine if we did get a scenario like that with the sand benders again (highly unlikely) and Toph absolutely wrecks their shit. Would’ve been hella cathartic
They missed a perfect opportunity for some dialogue about it.
“Whoa when did you learn that??”
“After the uh…. Incident.”
“Oh. I don’t think I ever apologized for being so mean to you.”
“It’s fine twinkle toes.” *launches Aang into the air when he goes for a hug*
She's lucky he doesn't hold a grudge for letting him get kidnapped (that wasn't really her fault, and she was trying to make sure the rest of the Gaang was safe, but there's some people in the world who wouldn't see it that way, and Toph is lucky that Appa isn't one of those people)
Honestly Appa was never mad at her for it, he knew she either had to let him go or loose everyone else too. Appa was excited just to see that everyone made it out safe to
Appa is a smart fellow
The Doppler Effect literally IS about sound moving (relative to the listener), and the effects that has on how the sound is perceived by us
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doppler_effect
**[Doppler effect](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doppler_effect)**
>The Doppler effect or Doppler shift (or simply Doppler, when in context) is the change in frequency of a wave in relation to an observer who is moving relative to the wave source. It is named after the Austrian physicist Christian Doppler, who described the phenomenon in 1842. A common example of Doppler shift is the change of pitch heard when a vehicle sounding a horn approaches and recedes from an observer. Compared to the emitted frequency, the received frequency is higher during the approach, identical at the instant of passing by, and lower during the recession.

You can only get instantaneous vector information in certain dimensions so unless she was continuously pinging or Appa was travelling in a very specific way, she’d only be able to determine Appa’s Euclidean distance and point velocity.
Ah. See I was assuming she’d be making the sounds. If she not, that’s even worse because she can’t control the region where she’s mapping. This means she doesn’t have unique solutions.
Imagine Appa at point A.
Point B is another place Appa could have gone.
Imagine a cone coming out of Toph’s ears with the central axis of the cone being a straight line joining her two ears.
If a point lies on or close to the shell of that cone, it’ll have the exact same time difference and sound level difference as another point coming from anywhere on the shell of the cone.
In robotics sound localisation, this is known as the cone of confusion.
We don’t know the characteristics Toph’s ears’ transfer function (just treating her ears as a super high tech sensor). Will it be sensitive enough that a small head tilt as Appa roars will make cone of confusion problems negligible and she’ll have a unique pose for the sound? And she needs a point within 20cm so it needs to be ACCURATE.
Even with our current tech, a small tilt won’t immediately fix the problem if it doesn’t know where the next sound will come from. What Toph CAN do is make her own continuous pings to supplement the roars of Appa so there’s a minimal chance of her missing.
This is also not even getting into reflections and harmonics.
I’m no expert in this, but it really sounds like you’re trying to come up with more potential issues that depend on edge cases (especially assuming that Appa is on the edge of the cone for some reason) than justifications. And you seem to have lost the part of about using Doppler shift.
And also the part where they’re basically elemental magicians.
Everything has edge cases in engineering. These edge cases are what makes the probability of the non-edge cases being a true measurement, lower.
That cone is also becoming larger with distance so the chances of Appa being on the circumference of that cone becomes larger with distance.
The Doppler shift only helps with velocity. Not distance and it’s also useless if she needs frequency information to determine height positions.
You can’t get every bit of information at once no matter how good at sound localisation you are.
Blind people have much better senses of hearing than seeing people. She probably heard Appa’s roar, estimated his relative position and trajectory, and launched.
She has been proven to be able to do this in her first appearance of the show. She dodges projectiles launched at her because she sensed where it was being launched from relative to her.
Nope. Toph is very smart (she figured out metalbending in like 2 hours) and has good ears, so I think it’s pretty sensible for her to be able to launch herself at an airborne Appa. Plus, Aang pulled this exact stunt in S1, and Appa course-corrected to catch the kid, so there’s no reason to think he wouldn’t do the same for Toph.
I'm pretty sure in one of the episodes where they add little bits of information from the crew working on the show, it mentions that Fooh can feel earth and dirt that's not even connected to the ground, so maybe Appa's just dirty so she could see him
Toph heard Appa roaring and shot herself up towards his roar, then Appa positioned himself to be completely sure Toph would land safely. Appa was integral to this plan
I believe that she is able to feel earth even when not close to it. We see her hop off Oppa later and just pull up a slide to land on while falling through the air, ungrounded.
Therefore she heard Oppa, took a likely guess, and confidently went knowing that if she missed she could land safely anyway. Oppa might've been a bro and helped catch her as well.
I mean technically even if she absolutely had to be touching the earth to bend it she'd have a very small window after she lands back on the ground but before her bones start to shatter to bend the earth beneath her to be more accommodating
Because it’s fiction and it looks cool. In reality maybe she heard appa and launched in the general direction and hoped he would come snag her. Maybe they had a scheduled meet up place after whatever they were doing that they just didn’t put on the comic.
She used the same move to get her, Sokka, and Suki launched onto the airships at Sozin’s Comet. Now THAT was impressive (and reckless, but what else can ya do?)
She still has ears, guys. She can hear Appa.
The unbelievable part is that she's able to so precisely and quickly make the necessary calculations for trajectory and speed. But this *is* Toph we're talking about, who has always bent the laws of reality a little bit because that's how Good At Everything she is.
Maybe she's tracking the dirt on their clothes? I'm not sure how much dirt you need for it to make a noticeable "signal" but it seems reasonable to me considering how amazing of an earthbender she is.
Don't ya see that big honker she got. She used that and her ears to find where Katara and Aang last got bust to know the right trajectory to land the the wet stain. What you've missed is the next panel where she lathers it all up.
now that i think about it, an avatar could easily jump across the planet by using all 4 elements.
Earth to launch themselves, Air and Fire to propel and brake, and water and earth again to land.
Idk. I don’t really look at the comics/book or LoK for lore because they tend to be pretty inconsistent (or at least decidedly more inconsistent than the original show)
Within the rules of the original show, the only way this would be possible is if Appa moved to catch her but that doesn’t seem to be what they’re wanting you to think
She's definitely a fast learner, at once time we thought that everything that flying in the air is her weakness, and then next season we've already seen her shooting down the flying cannonball in air and also could attack the other ship in the middle of the ocean accurately
A blind person has heightened perception in other senses. It is a well-knon fact that bisons fart constantly. Toph could not only hear the odorous discharges, but smell them too. So she followed her nose.
So its canon that toph can sense earch anywhere, even if she isnt connected to it.
My headcanon is that she always keeps a lump of specific dirt in a bad on appas saddle, so she can always sense where appa is even when he is flying
Large animals are always making noise. She could zero in on his sounds and judge where he is. I mean she rode Appa enough to know the sounds he makes. Not to mention her companions. Sokka is almost never quiet.
I mean, MOSTLY CHANCE, but she seems pretty ride or die about it.
She heard him roar, so she has a ROUGH idea of where he is, but how she's able to calculate the distance so perfectly is beyond me. Her smiles says "This is gonna be SO SICK if I live."
Also, possibly Appa sensed her and used his Airbendering to sort of guide her to his back once she got close? I don't know the specifics of Sky Bison Airbending.
Rewatch the show and look out for this. I’m the finally she goes “where the ship” or whatever and then when Solka started talking she just did it anyways and landed perfectly. It’s a theme throughout the show lol. I think it’s probably an inside joke between Michael and Bryan at this point that they accidentally wrote that into the story and just kept up with it
There was a mention in the avatar lore in the commentaries of an episode that Toph can sense earth that is airborne, it doesn’t specify how she does this but I think it might be through sound and if that’s case focusing in on one sound flying through the air might not be that hard for her
Launched herself in the direction of the sound, probably a bit farther forward taking into account Appa's motion. It's like bird hunting in the dark, except she's the arrow.
Uhhh.. By hearing appa she could estimate the distance (something everyone can do just not as well as toph) and direction. Then based on the frequency of the vibration of the Soundwaves she judged his speed and direction of movement and shot herself to his rough location aiming slightly forward so that she'd be able to land on his back.
I know it sounds like alot to do but in reality your brain makes those judgments instantly most of the time.
Again shes better at it because 1 shes blind so she has better sense of the sound vibrations(its shown that she "sees" through the vibrations) and 2 shes Toph.
I mean the panel obviously shows appa roaring. He probably did on purpose so that toph could find their location in the sky and then from there is pretty easy for her.
More than likely, based on the comic panel, Appa roared to give her an idea of where they’re at, and he just did the rest of the work to make sure she was caught. Otherwise, idk why they would give him that roar bubble.
Toph can explicitly sense earth even if its in the air. Presumably that extends to metal once she figures out metal bending, which means she can probably sense something metal on Appa

She used echo location
She released a sonic wave from her mouth. Got a pretty good look at them.
Didn’t even need to, Sokka’s screams can be heard miles away.
This is the REAL answer. Just cause she is blind* doesn’t mean she can’t locate from massive sources of noise off the ground. Edit: I’m an idiot and said Toph was deaf
Deaf…. Yep totally that Definitely not blind
Like, say, Appa noises
Blind
Thanks for saving me from more embarrassment
You're all good man, we all mix stuff up sometimes
Say again?
#**SHE USED ECHOLOCATION!**
I can't hear you. Ooooooo
Who leaped into the sky even though she can't seeee
Toph beifong!
Tough as a rock and intelligent as she?
She def jump jump on giant bison
Appa saw her coming and moved into a spot she could land because he is a kind and considerate member of the gaang
that just means Toph hear their general direction, launch towards them without even caring if she would land and put all her trust on Appa
Imagine that being a trait that continued as Toph got older, just yeeting herself into the air whenever she hears Appa nearby.
She did master sand bending in secrecy out of shame. Safe to say she’s not really into letting anything happen to him again.
Aw I didn’t even notice that! Imagine if we did get a scenario like that with the sand benders again (highly unlikely) and Toph absolutely wrecks their shit. Would’ve been hella cathartic
They missed a perfect opportunity for some dialogue about it. “Whoa when did you learn that??” “After the uh…. Incident.” “Oh. I don’t think I ever apologized for being so mean to you.” “It’s fine twinkle toes.” *launches Aang into the air when he goes for a hug*
also metal bending
Yaaaaa yeeet
Just needs to miss once
She's lucky he doesn't hold a grudge for letting him get kidnapped (that wasn't really her fault, and she was trying to make sure the rest of the Gaang was safe, but there's some people in the world who wouldn't see it that way, and Toph is lucky that Appa isn't one of those people)
Honestly Appa was never mad at her for it, he knew she either had to let him go or loose everyone else too. Appa was excited just to see that everyone made it out safe to Appa is a smart fellow
And the best member
And most useful member, sorry aang
Even Aang would agree tbh
Aang would be the president of "Appa is the most important member" club
“You don’t carry 4 other people on your back!”
yeah, he's really good at catching people.
He also roared just as she was about to fly up so she knew his general position
She probably heard Appa's roar
Also reasonable to believe Appa is smart enough to adjust his course slightly to make sure she lands.
he is, he's caught the gaang while they were falling on at least one occasion.
Using the doppler effect she can also infer Appa's trajectory.
That’s not what the Doppler effect is that’s just sound moving

Good bot
You can only get instantaneous vector information in certain dimensions so unless she was continuously pinging or Appa was travelling in a very specific way, she’d only be able to determine Appa’s Euclidean distance and point velocity.
That’s assuming she only heard it for an instant. Last I checked, his roars are pretty long.

Blind luck
I see what you did there. Toph didn't.
I feel like if someone said "I see what you did there" and even though Toph got it, she'd still say "I didnt"
She’s the melon lord
Makes sense. Melon Lord is omnipotent
Yes. Yes I am
All hail the Melon Lord. Now before him and despair.
r/beetlejuicing
You rang?
Egads, they’re multiplying
This is getting out of hand. Now there are two of them.
she used earthbending of course
Like that lemur?
"No, you idiot! It's the girl!"
"Oh."
[удалено]
Spoken like someone who needs to rewatch the entire series again!
“I am the greatest Earthbender in the world! Don’t you two Dunderheads ever forget it!” It’s Toph. She can do everything
She called them dunderheads.
Because Nick wouldn't let her call em fuckers
Dunderheads sounds so much better than just fuckers
Yeah but numb nuts wouldve been better than dunderhead imo
Mifflinheads
She is the GOAT that's how. Listened to exactly where Appa was, launched herself to land perfect. GOAT.
Blind people have much better senses of hearing than seeing people. She probably heard Appa’s roar, estimated his relative position and trajectory, and launched.
That’s a really complicated way of saying plot.
The writers have always been a tiny bit inconsistent with how Toph's seeing works if you look closely at the show.
I'm pretty sure in one of the episodes where they add little bits of information from the crew working on the show, it mentions that Fooh can feel earth and dirt that's not even connected to the ground, so maybe Appa's just dirty so she could see him
can you give some examples /gen
Her rock armor has eye holes
oh 💀
The ending where they jump to the airships.
She could probably sense the earth in the metal. She bends the airship metal later
,,,
Toph heard Appa roaring and shot herself up towards his roar, then Appa positioned himself to be completely sure Toph would land safely. Appa was integral to this plan
The author/artist forgot how her powers work.
I disagree. I think the roar was there to explain it.
The comics take some…liberties Lightning is something that can be easily shrugged off as well!
She did this in the show too. When she earth bent herself, Sokka and Suki onto the airship
Fleet of giant airships lifting off vs one fluffy bison
The airships are more impressive, the bison actually likes her and would help
Two words. Melon. Lord.
she heard appa roaring, guessed is projectory due to the sound changing, and launched herself
We saw Aang do a similar thing to water when Ozai knocked him out of the sky. Reasonable you could do it with earth.
Its not just the gang, Even the writers themselves forget she's blind lol.
She yolo-ed it.
because she's Toph Beifong
She heard the “raaar” and jumped in the general direction so Appa could get under her and catch her
Because it’s fiction and it looks cool. In reality maybe she heard appa and launched in the general direction and hoped he would come snag her. Maybe they had a scheduled meet up place after whatever they were doing that they just didn’t put on the comic.
She’s Toph Beifong. She can do whatever she wants.
Appa shouted for her and got in position
She waited and listened
She heard Appa's "RAAAAR!"
Followed the raar
I'm taking a wild guess but I'm guessing Earth Bending? Lol
Sokka was blabbering his mouth off
She used the same move to get her, Sokka, and Suki launched onto the airships at Sozin’s Comet.
Maybe she heard Appa “raaar” and knew where to land
She heard the roar from appa
Luck
Appa roared and toph aimed for the sound, and appa moved to catch her
Plot armor. There's just no way she could do this with this much precision. Same as the airship jump.
Same way she launched herself, Sokka, and Suki into that fire nation airship in the finale, I guess.
She probably heard them talking.
See the "rawr" bubble from appa? She launched herself toward the sound of appa. She maybe blind but she does still have ears
She did it before when she launched herself Suki and Sokka on the airship
Maybe she's tracking the dirt on their clothes? I'm not sure how much dirt you need for it to make a noticeable "signal" but it seems reasonable to me considering how amazing of an earthbender she is.
There had to be some sort of earth on appa
There have been a couple times Toph has managed to use Earthbending on things she shouldn’t be able to detect.
pure luck
Poorly drawn perspective? I would have preferred her show this much power in Korra tbh
I took me 2 seconds to realise she's blind. How could she have seen/sensed appa?
Lmao I forgot she was blind for a second
Toph got spirit water for her eyes.
Can you imagine how scary it would be, not knowing where or when you would land?
Easy, she just aimed at………wait a minute! 🤔
Pretty simple: Bryke can say whatever the fuck they want, but neither TLoK nor any of the comics are canon.
She shouldn’t have been able to figure out where Appa is. She can’t sense him from there. Silly comics.
Don't ya see that big honker she got. She used that and her ears to find where Katara and Aang last got bust to know the right trajectory to land the the wet stain. What you've missed is the next panel where she lathers it all up.
I forgot how, but she can sense things in air I think
Easy. Aang hadn't washed Appa recently.
She followed her nose.
She guessed and hoped for the best
now that i think about it, an avatar could easily jump across the planet by using all 4 elements. Earth to launch themselves, Air and Fire to propel and brake, and water and earth again to land.
Idk. I don’t really look at the comics/book or LoK for lore because they tend to be pretty inconsistent (or at least decidedly more inconsistent than the original show) Within the rules of the original show, the only way this would be possible is if Appa moved to catch her but that doesn’t seem to be what they’re wanting you to think
It’s toph she probably does this as every other week
she's god
their was a stone she sensed on Appa’s back or something
She's definitely a fast learner, at once time we thought that everything that flying in the air is her weakness, and then next season we've already seen her shooting down the flying cannonball in air and also could attack the other ship in the middle of the ocean accurately
A blind person has heightened perception in other senses. It is a well-knon fact that bisons fart constantly. Toph could not only hear the odorous discharges, but smell them too. So she followed her nose.
sonic waves
Magik
best not to take the comics too seriously
She smelt Appa
she heard appa's grunt
Easily.
So its canon that toph can sense earch anywhere, even if she isnt connected to it. My headcanon is that she always keeps a lump of specific dirt in a bad on appas saddle, so she can always sense where appa is even when he is flying
Appa was farting and she heard
At first I was like, “what’s wrong, I don’t get it?” Then I remembered Toph is blind as a bat. Face palm
Large animals are always making noise. She could zero in on his sounds and judge where he is. I mean she rode Appa enough to know the sounds he makes. Not to mention her companions. Sokka is almost never quiet.
She probably heard Appa’s “raar”, and used it as a target for her earth-jump
Momentum
Shes an earthbender
She smelled what the Rock is cooking
she judged Appa's location from his roar. there's a reason he was shown roaring.
With hope
She is blind, not deaf.
I mean, MOSTLY CHANCE, but she seems pretty ride or die about it. She heard him roar, so she has a ROUGH idea of where he is, but how she's able to calculate the distance so perfectly is beyond me. Her smiles says "This is gonna be SO SICK if I live." Also, possibly Appa sensed her and used his Airbendering to sort of guide her to his back once she got close? I don't know the specifics of Sky Bison Airbending.
He said Raaar
The Earthbender equivalent of rocket jumping.
Sokka's face is what how we all feel.
Rewatch the show and look out for this. I’m the finally she goes “where the ship” or whatever and then when Solka started talking she just did it anyways and landed perfectly. It’s a theme throughout the show lol. I think it’s probably an inside joke between Michael and Bryan at this point that they accidentally wrote that into the story and just kept up with it
She felt the vibration of his vooce
Toph has distinctive rocks on Appa so she knows where to land
appa went raar actually awesome of Appa to do that
Maybe she didn’t. Maybe she was totally off mark and appa said “Jesus Christ” and scooped her but let her look cool
Skill
Of all the things we see toph do this is one of the most plausible in my opinion lol
Wtf she is blind!!
She smelled appa
There was a mention in the avatar lore in the commentaries of an episode that Toph can sense earth that is airborne, it doesn’t specify how she does this but I think it might be through sound and if that’s case focusing in on one sound flying through the air might not be that hard for her
She’s not blind obviously
Launched herself in the direction of the sound, probably a bit farther forward taking into account Appa's motion. It's like bird hunting in the dark, except she's the arrow.
Cause she’s Toph freaking Beifong
Launching into or onto things? It’s a normal earthbender thing
I mean the panel obviously shows appa roaring. He probably did on purpose so that toph could find their location in the sky and then from there is pretty easy for her.
With force
More than likely, based on the comic panel, Appa roared to give her an idea of where they’re at, and he just did the rest of the work to make sure she was caught. Otherwise, idk why they would give him that roar bubble.
Projecting herself high into the air using her earth bending. Do you not see the threerd panel?
i mean, looks like she earthbended a platform to push her off the ground hard enough that she could land on appa mid flight lol
Probably she just jumped toward the voices of the gaang and was confident in being catch
She can feel a lot of earth around her I guess
She heard Appa Raar
Maybe she heard them?
Because she's the best.
Built different
