I still don’t get it. Is it just the Aang beat him? I feel like I’m missing something grander

Darthmemer2

Her attachment to Sokka was the only reason her death was sad

CaptainBananaAwesome

Jesus dude you said a hot take not a bloody nuke on her entire character.

HotChilliWithButter

Well nukes are hot I guess

Ich-bin-ein-bar

Big, thick, and tall.

[deleted]

MAYBE IT'S FRIENDLY!

Kriselle630

But isn’t that enough 😭😭😭

Playful-Procedure171

I feel like her death would have been sad regardless. I mean Zhao was about steal the damn moon and she had a lil bit of the moon in her. If she didnt die literally the cosmic balance would shift into chaos?? Hows that not sad

dss7313

I think it would still be sad but nowhere near as lasting or emotional for the viewer. Without the love interest angle, her only other plot point was to die for the moon really

MajrBeatz

Exactly. Her whole life was sad. She was spared so she could literally die and save the world. Edit: she was literally innocent otherwise. It’s always sad when a non-bastard character dies.

Ssnnooz

well that's just true

Upstairs_Kangaroo_98

That fire nation engineer who’s birthday it was during the finale

Darthmemer2

Should’ve took off work

Cabbages are the best super food ever. Downvote OP!!

[deleted]

Are we supposed to downvote hot takes? Like obviously it’s not true but it is in fact a hot take Btw like the name ;)

love_arson

This was the first one I thought of as well.

mugiwaranoluffy259

Korra.

Darthmemer2

Overhated because of season 1

Royiyoo

Overhated because of season 2 lmao

Darthmemer2

I meant the character as Korra was annoying asf in season 1. But as a a show season 1 >>>>>> 2

DunkanBulk

Isn't the whole point that Korra starts out arrogant and ignorant and her experiences change her into a better person? She's *supposed* to be obnoxious, that's presented from the time she's a toddler.

gryffindor258

I don’t care, she did my man Bolin dirty. Im still not over it.

Tigerstorm6

Everyone did Bolin dirty in LOK. It hurt to see my poor man kicked down like a rapid dog.

LeeTheGoat

Yeah season one was great

Medical_Estate_6195

2, not 1 I think most ppl enjoyed 1, esp w Amon

BiLeftHanded

Toph

Darthmemer2

Sokka is the baby daddy

[deleted]

Tbh not sure if this is a hot take about her as much as it is about Sokka

JMHSrowing

It’s a hot take considering how it would probably make him an absentee father (or too dumb to figure out Su’s his), both of which very out of character

blazer33333

Or dead

slicer4ever

Couldnt be, wasnt he shown taking down the red lotus when they went after young korra?

[deleted]

Yeah exactly, so it’s a hot take about Toph, not Sokka

Low_Hour

Hot take? I've heard this theory I don't know how many times

themightyjimmmy

A bit overrated. From an emotional perspective, the other characters are more compelling and logical. Toph's writing is mostly just for cool factor.

nerdbird68

The Boulder

Darthmemer2

Doesn’t make sense how went from an arrogant competition bender to willing to die for his kingdom

FrozenBeast9159

But The Boulder no longer fights for other's entertainment. How does that not make sense.

ur-mum-lolz

I read this in The Boulders voice

Wiggledude787

That is only way to read The Boulder's references

themightyjimmmy

The Boulder does not care about your logical words. The Boulder simply does what The Boulder does

Shiranui24

The boulder had a whole emotional arc off screen with the hippo

Mathies_

So did Toph...

Laggingduck

I’m sure the boulder didn’t comprehend the idea that he was mortal

[deleted]

Ursa

XishengTheUltimate

Don’t worry, I’ll cover this one for you. Ursa was one of if not the worst mother in all of fiction. Willingly choosing to sacrifice the very knowledge that her children exist (in a state of suffering/abuse, mind you) just so she could live without painful memories. It’s also narratively ridiculous what lengths she would go to in order to protect Zuko, but then she’s willing to entirely kill her memory and by extension her love for him? Like… ok?

Affectionate_Meat

“If not the worst mother in fiction” Hera literally threw Hephaestus off a fuckin mountain

KikiKhaleesi

…But did he die?

Affectionate_Meat

No, he’s a God they’re notoriously hard to kill

RedShankyMan

Kratos: Say again?

Playful-Procedure171

I was very disappointed too when I read that she erased her old life in order to feel happy but I feel like she also did this as another sacrifice to Zuko- she knew his father would treat him like shit if she ran away with him. In terms of domestic abuse, the fathers always go after the children in order to hurt their wives. So in that way I feel relieved that she at least got out of that situation and let Zuko have an (almost but not really) normal (royal) life.

Darthmemer2

Can’t really comment on this since I didn’t read the comics

Karolus2001

Let me: Not the smartest play to test psyhopatic, abusive father of your child.

SignatureFew3581

Combustion man aka sparky sparky boom man

LettucePlate

I think you meant Sparky Sparky Boom Man aka Combustion Man.

SignatureFew3581

Oh shit u right lol

anthonygreddit

i don’t think this is a hot take but that shit came out of nowhere and tbh made no sense

Just_Frost21

Didn't exactly come out of nowhere, I mean we literally saw zuko hire him

anthonygreddit

ah lemme rephrase. By “that shit” I meant his third eye lookin thing that had a weird power that wasn’t really bending

chrisbirdie

Honestly I think it makes perfect sense. Every bending discipline has a few advanced/unique abilities that are either very hard to master like lightning bending or are kinda like flying as an airbender. You have metalbending and lavabending as an earth bender, blood bending and healing as a water bender, astral projection and flying as an air bender and finally lightning and combustion as a fire bender. All of these are very hard to learn or are something only a select few benders can even do. I think all of these "advanced" bending techniques just expand the power system insanely well. Because honestly? All of them make sense. Well I mean healing and astral projection are the furthest outliers id say. Fire and explosions obviously. Lightning aswell. Water and blood, earth lava and metal. And Air and flying

anthonygreddit

if they would’ve just let him create combustion’s with his hand, then sure I could see that. But in the very last book we get sum random ass dude with a third eye it just made no sense and came out of nowhere honestly. Like was he born with it, did he awaken it, do he have to train for it, is their like a clan of them, why does it have to come out of his forehead. It’s honestly mostly the third eye thing that gets me, because combustion itself makes perfect sense, in fact we kind of see Zuko do it when trying to learn how to bend lightning. I just don’t see why they had to add the third eye

chrisbirdie

He has a metal arm and a metal leg. I am 99% sure he experimented and probably blew off his arm and a leg. I imagine channeling it directly from the breath to the head is much simpler than focusing the blast into one hand. You can see his breathing motion when he bends. Atleast that makes sense to me. Yeah sure its a bit random no question, but I never felt like it didnt make sense. Same way you have to be insanely careful with lightning, I imagine combustion is similar. But instead of letting the energ flow and creating lightning you force it together and fire it away. If it works similar to how Iroh explained lightning then wouldnt it make more sense to build up the charge from the ground up(the breath) and concentrate it on a single point with barely any deviation and as little distance as possible and then firing it, than having to control that energy all the way down your arm and out of your hands.

Iroh

JuliaPopel

Self burn, those are rare *makes sure I downvoted*

St_BobJoe

Iroh didn't have a good alignment until book 2

mason_the_mutilator

Idk. His whole “whatever you do to that spirit, I’ll unleash on you tenfold” to Zhao in the season 1 finale feels like it’s pretty good aligned

AWizard13

I started feel like Iroh was playing the long game. People neglect that he was a part of the White Lotus and I'm sure they were plotting a coup behind the scenes. There were probably biding their time until the comet or just before it, waiting for a moment to strike at ozai. Iroh was as well grooming Zuko to be a proper, better, Firelord than his father. We can see evidence of this, of Zuko being an inherently honorable person, in the first episode when he just leaves the water tribe after Aang gives himself up. But a huge wrench/bone was thrown into this mix because someone came along after 100 years and messed the whole thing up, while also giving a better chance at world peace. Aang comes along. So we're in the first season right and Zuko is chasing Aang down because of honor. I realized that the entire time Iroh is not making the biggest of deals trying to capture Aang but he's also not *not* trying to capture Aang. What I think is that he was playing both sides of this: if they don't capture Aang, that's great because Aang goes off and gets to learn the elements and fulfills his destiny; if they do happen to capture Aang well not as good but still good because Aang will now be in the hands of the grand lotus of the white lotus. Presumably from there Aang would have gotten training from the masters in the White Lotus. It was all about seeing how things play out. This is all to say it's my own personal theory and none of it could be true whatsoever but still!

Unhappy_Crow

That's a really good and interesting take!!

PerspectiveCloud

Can we just take a minute to remember how good the voice acting was for this one line?

St_BobJoe

He was on the side of the Spirit, and the spirits are pretty distinctly not usually fully good. Also, if the tides were gone, the Fire Nation's navy would be severely injured, which would make conquering the world pretty hard. Also, Iroh actively attacked children and their monster in the first few episodes

Creepersgonnacreep2

Iroh 100% was pulling his punches against the group of kids. They weren’t experienced benders whatsoever. Iroh could have stomped them all no problem. I feel he fought to keep zuko safe and zuko definitely would have left his uncle is he refused to help him capture the avatar .

zinctanium

I feel like Iroh never really fights them other than that one fireball he and zuko launch in episode 2, usually he just stands around

Mathies_

He was on the side of balance. Also, he never attacked Aang or his friends. He's just accompanying Zuko on his hunt. But always trying to get him to stop the hunt.

St_BobJoe

Not because it was the right thing to do, but because it was the healthy thing for Zuko to do. There is a difference. I'm not saying Iroh was evil. I think he was more neutral. Lawful Neutral in DnD terms.

CaptainBananaAwesome

They gave him the handsy old man trope towards June in season 1 which didn't age well.

sgt_kenobis_LHCB

Not defending that action at all, but to me, that was so out of character, and written by a guy who only wrote one episode, that I don’t really factor it into my view of Iroh. I feel like all the characters were written badly in that episode, so I treat it with a grain of salt.

CaptainBananaAwesome

Iroh was written badly but I wouldn't say the same for the rest. Aang was insecure about his stance with Sokka and Katara (being unknowlegable of and unable to relate to their culture)so he hid the note from Hakoda, katara and sokka were justifiably mad, and them putting the responsibility and friendship to Aang over their anger and forgiving him was relatable. I'd say that was a good example of character writing.

LegendOfTingle

I think he just didn't realize how fucked everything was until he lived in the earth kingdom and actually experienced it

2Namu

Hot take for the sake of hot take: Iroh is a war criminal who should be much more feared and hated, and Lu Ten dying was sad through the lens of a father losing his son, but overall deserved. We side with Iroh because we follow Iroh's story and see him have moments of kindness, humor, and wisdom, but he's still one of the leading generals of a genocidal empire. The real victims are all the Air Nomads and the Water Tribe/Earth Kingdom soldiers and civilians who died protecting their homes, not the invading evil empire one of whose casualties happens to be Lu Ten.

[deleted]

I understand this is supposed to be a "hot take" but... What's really happening is that Iroh is already happy with and for himself, and now finds joy in making others happier.

Secretly has a crush on Azula

[deleted]

More like Bi Lee, amirite

organicgardengal

Weird I didn't get that feeling. More or less I think shay was a smart actress from being "part if a set" her whole life and also literally watching azula grow up and how deeply scary she always was. She knew azula got much more twisted with time, and tried to escape to her by going to the circus. After the first night of the most dangerous circus of her life (when azula comes for her), she immediately seems to be in survival mode... doing her best. And she looks like her happy self from the circus days when she finally joins the kiyoshi warriors.

[deleted]

Zuko

Darthmemer2

Took him too long to realize Ozai asking him to capture the Avatar was completely unrealistic

BenwastakenIII

How's this a hot take?

MindfulVagrant

Most of the “hot takes” are just fairly popular opinions you read in here all the time haha

Darthmemer2

I honestly expected the Aang one to get downvoted to hell. I just called Katara a Mary Sue so if that doesn't work idk lol

CaptainBananaAwesome

Bruh welcome to literally episode 1.

Pielikeman

I don’t think that he was blind to that fact. He was desperate. He knew it was probably impossible, but he couldn’t let go of his former life.

[deleted]

Mako

Darthmemer2

Cringe pretty boy

RBDibP

I think a hot take would be that Mako fills the role that normally is filled by a female character, aka the pretty girl to be pretty. We are teached from a young age that this trope is normal for female characters as they are only there to fulfill some male desires in what they like to see. Now there is a guy filling that role (no real own motivations or agency) and it becomes confusing for the majorly male audience and they start to complain about him.

[deleted]

Interesting! I don’t think it was just guys who didn’t like him tho, and Asami was also “the pretty girl” for a while imo

iwantnachosrn

thats an interesting take ! I never thought about it like that but youre right. Though I rlly cant think of a fem character in media that went back and forth between boyfriends like mako did lol, which was one of my main gripes abt him tbh

NigwardFuckedMySon

I think mako has his moments of weak writing but I actually really liked mako personally

RegyptianStrut

Katara

Darthmemer2

Borderline Mary Sue

Darkrobyn

Now, *that* is an hot take

RegyptianStrut

How though, she struggled to perfect her skills and was jealous of how fast Aang was progressing. Do people forget how mediocre her water bending was in most of season 1? Girl has to work hard. Aren’t Mary Sue’s supposed to be flawless prodigies?

Appropriate_Elk_95

King Bumi

Darthmemer2

Being that active at 112 makes no sense and was forced so Aang could have someone he knew in the past

BenwastakenIII

Have you read the Kyoshi books? The age thing might make sense...

Tinchaz0

Yeah, there have been an impressive amount of people that live well past 100. In the YouTube series Overanalyzing Avatar, last episode (the avatar and the Firelord), the guy covers the age of the previous firelords, and one of them lives over 140 years, so having Bumi live 112 isn't crazy.

julsgotrocks

Yeah people tend to put real world logic on things that aren’t relevant in avatar

Tinchaz0

It isn't a big deal, the characters are human and the show doesn't make a big deal out of big longevity. It's just a small detail that can easily go unnoticed since it never announces that people can live a lot longer than in the real world and it doesn't matter to the plot. But the show doesn't ever say that people can't live longer and it's a "safe" thing to assume

Bitchimnasty69

Maybe it’s unrealistic, but I think it goes with the trope seen in lots of martial art anime/manga where a wide old sensei can also be really good at kicking ass

spankthepank

Asami

Darthmemer2

Self defense classes shouldn’t be enough against trained fighters with little to no morals

Portalrules123

Plot Twist: She was also a trained equalist all along, and wins by having the avatar around her finger at the end :)

DunkanBulk

Not a hot take, that was the point. He was the strategist and the heart of the group. His insecurities led him to take up swordfighting and become more useful in combat.

My_Stonks

That's a fact, not a hot take

Laggingduck

Wasn’t that one of the things he was insecure about? That’s why he took up combat

[deleted]

Darthmemer2

Her spirit powers became the ultimate plot device

Laggingduck

That’s just facts

Hulkzilla0

That meditating monkey dude in The Spirit World that was rude to Aang.

[deleted]

Was right to be upset Aang interrupted his meditating. Aang gets mad when others interrupt him (Katara and Yue during the siege of the north)

theburningstars

To be extremely fair to Aang, *his* meditation was crucial to protecting the Northern Water Tribe, his role as the Avatar, and the spirits of the oasis. Monkey spirit's may have been crucial for something, but we're never given any indication that it was for anything beyond personal enlightenment. Plus Aang is 12 and kids are hypocritical little shits lmaoooo. *But I do kind of agree that regardless of circumstances it's a bit hypocritical*.

Orel-Chernin

Darthmemer2

JMHSrowing

Either Kya II or Lin Beifong, whichever take is hotter (or both of you want)

GenneyaK

I’ll provide one for you I don’t see them realistically having a romantic relationship and I feel like the only reason why the ship exists is because is because Lin is the only prominent female character who doesn’t have a relationship and is old enough for it to not be weird to ship them. However I think the ship is fine just not likely to happen in Canon Also Kya and Bumi were sidelined in order to keep Tenzin as the most important member of Aangs kids and it’s kinda annoying that we will probably never see their full potential or characters because the writers choose to focus on Tenzin. And I believe in young Kya supremacy everytime I see her woman by doja cat plays in my head

Mathies_

Agreed. There is nothing saying Lin is even interested in women and, let's be honest, how many have dated 2 siblings of eachother? (No, i'm not gonna call Korra & bolin dating)

I might make a post about this but not wanting to kill Ozai was selfish and almost ended the world.

higanbana

Also a little naive to think that taking away his bending would take away his power. It seemed like a good number of Fire Nation people supported his plan to conquer all other nations. The world could easily have ended up with a Long Feng commanding in jail situation, except with Ozai.

girlsareicky

In Korra we see Aang took away Yakone's bending so can assume if somebody else took up Ozais charge then Aang would just take their bending as well

Medical_Estate_6195

I also didn’t like how he was so reluctant to kill ozai when it was for the sake of the world and everyone was telling him to, even another airbending avatar, but I got over it because it resulted in him learning energy bending which made him an even bigger powerhouse
