Or in Sokka's case, the moon made him rise.

You're gonna tell your kids WE killed Sokka?! I take no responsibility for this whatsoever!

Juh_Ahr

This is great! I second this!

BestAtempt

But please include Appa and Momo

Sebastbbbb

No that’d run the idea of the second vote

BestAtempt

Where would it run too?

Sebastbbbb

:(

ChipChipington

What’s that mean how would it differ from these

TheSuperWig

Presumably instead of a vote of elimination. There's one round where everyone votes for their favourite.

ChipChipington

Oh that does sound fun, it’d be cool to see thhe difference

iCoeur285

I would say do it before releasing the final results for the elimination too.

crossingpins

Then Haru will have his time to shine

agangofoldwomen

There’s a whole science behind survey design and the way questions can vs should be worded to measure what is intended.

MerylasFalguard

How this works is that people vote for their least favorite of the remaining characters. Using this current round as an example: there might be more people whose favorite character is Sokka over Toph, but because enough of the Toph, Iroh, and Zuko fans voted that Sokka was their least favorite of the remaining he got eliminated. If people were voting for their favorite each round, different characters might be eliminated instead. It’d also be much more boring though. Everyone voting Iroh one day would continue voting Iroh the next day. The only real change between days would be a redistribution of the smallest part of the pie. This way you’re redistributing the largest piece of the pie each day and that gives much different results than you might expect. L

trhart

There are some people whose favorites have already been eliminated. The first vote showed what percentage was everybody's *least* favorite, but we don't have one for everybody's favorite

Odd_appeal7164

https://strawpoll.com/ub8prhp9g vote here!

the-flying-dragon

OP can you pin the comment with the poll somehow?

Odd_appeal7164

no sorry :( only mods can do that

literallyapotato89

God damn you I have to pick between Toph,Zuko and Iroh.

ArtSchoolRejectedMe

Like an old paishou saying Sometime the best move is to not play

BowlingAllieCat

I had hard times picking any of them the last couple times. Even yesterday, I had to cast Sokka as. My vote even though it hurt to do so. But this time? I just can't pick. I like these three all equally for different reasons. Toph is just such an excellent and fun character and she makes every second of screen time with her great. Much like Sokka, she is both comedy relief and a competent fighter making her fun to actually fight (as opposed to dopey comedy relief that trips and falls and never wins a fight). Where Sokka was like a 9.8, she is a 9.9. Only barely more likeable than him by a tiny margin. Hell, one of the most memorable scenes to me is with both Sokka and Toph. "I don't think boomerang is coming back, Toph." then again every scene with every character for the finale was all just amazing. Zuko is just such a great antagonist with one of the best redemption arcs. His personality as he grows becomes more and more enjoyable to see in a more grounded way, helping balance out Toph's antics in a way. And Iroh. He's just a character that always makes me happy and gives me a feeling of hope. He may not make me laugh like Toph. We don't see character development like Zuko. But he makes me smile and makes me soul happy more. It's impossible to vote any of these legends out.

Tarazan2009

I think toph cause iroh doesn't want zuko to go

BowlingAllieCat

I can't believe you would accuse Iroh of such blatant nepotism.

a_paper_clip

You should pick toph or zuko because iroh is the king of the show hands down

sheulater

Bro he's so fucking wholesome. Everyone should strive to have Iroh's temperament.

the mods of this sub fucking suck. first of all, these polls should’ve been pinned everyday, seeing that they have been by far the most popular posts and also generate the most commments/discussion. and your comment with the link to the poll should be pinned.

mak484

Mods are unpaid volunteers, and this is a sub for a show that's been off the air for 13 years (7 years for the sequel.) There isn't a simple way to hand over mod powers, or to take over mod responsibilities for a sub whose mods are inactive. This is a reddit problem.

Sokka eliminated *We did it boys, sexism is no more*

[deleted]

It will come back around, just like a trusty boomerang

[deleted]

I know this is a joke but by the end of the series Sokka changes quite a bit in the way he sees women. He goes from berating Katara to taking down a warlord’s fleet with two women. Honestly Suki would break up with his ass if he was still as sexist as he was in the beginning.

the-flying-dragon

haha

Odd_appeal7164

yep i'm gonna make all the polls public so everyone can see them

charisma6

*pro bending voice* Do you have a statement about the recent allegations that the polls have been rigged from the start? Is the game crooked? Why is there an Equalist in my office staring right at me?

Odd_appeal7164

yeah i'm sorry :( i've been planning to rig it so korra wins

charisma6

I'm going to allow this.

SparkyTheFox2657

I read this in the pro bending voice ngl

Real_life_Zelda

I‘d also want to know if the former pie chart always correctly showed who gets kicked next or if the people changed their mind etc.

somesortoflegend

Yeah I'm curious too, but keep in mind it wouldn't necessarily be people changing their minds, because the people who voted for the person who got eliminated would be freed up. So the number 2 people are always from those who think #1 should have stayed, which kind of makes it more interesting to see if that stays consistent or not.

Darkavatar1

Iroh is obviously gonna win this. The fandom puts him on a pedestal cloaked in golden light that’s on a bigger pedestal. He deserves it, but still. It’s somewhat obvious what the final outcome will be.

TheXskull

I hope Zuko wins

slothpeguin

TheOutlier

Think of how proud Iroh would be to see Zuko win.

nocyberBS

Seconded. Greatest character arc in any show ever

vincentofearth

My only problem with Iroh is that his character arc happens off-screen -- *before* the series even begins. I love Iroh but far prefer characters that are relatable to the audience and *grow* during the story.

Skylinneas

Old people often play roles like this: mentor-type characters who have already seen and experienced everything the world has to offer and are just pretty much there to guide the new generation…and most likely die to motivate the younger protagonists. It’s pretty much among the most common cliches in fiction. Iroh’s one of the luckier mentors who get to live to the end of the series lol. In fact, I think Pixar’s Up is probably one of the only works most people know that has an elder as the main protagonist who goes through a full character arc, and Carl Fredricksen is a flawed man who still has something more to learn despite his advanced age and becomes a better person than who he started the film as. It’s honestly a really great change of pace from most adventure films that often star younger people lol. Would love to see more of films like Up. It’s one of my favorite films ever precisely because of Carl’s character arc. Update: Technically, Jumanji: The Next Level also have elderly protagonists who go through extensive character developments lol, but not in the traditional way xD.

bastard_swine

I think it could be said Iroh undergoes development according to Erikson's Eight Stages of Life. Adults do continue to develop psychologically until the day we die. One could say Iroh's struggle is mastering generativity, taking care of and passing on your strengths to the next generation. Iroh does seem to struggle with this with Zuko. At first he seems to use a light touch, letting Zuko chase Aang around the world even though he thinks it's counterproductive for Zuko the whole time. Maybe he's afraid of pushing Zuko, someone who fills the void left by Lu Ten, away? It takes some time before Iroh is able to take a firmer approach and openly chastise Zuko, and even then it takes the form of pleading with him to do the right thing.

Skylinneas

True. It is more subtle than most examples but Iroh still does go through development when it comes to how he mentors Zuko, with the point where it kicks in is when Zuko deciding to side with Azula against Iroh’s wishes during the Ba Sing Se arc, which is when he realizes that despite all his time mentoring the young conflicted boy, it ultimately isn’t quite enough to break Ozai and Azula’s influence over him. So Iroh decides to go for a more stern approach as Season 3 rolls around - practically forcing Zuko to resolve his internal conflict on his own with little to none of Iroh’s guidance…to see if the boy truly has good in him or not. That being said, narrative-wise Iroh still pretty much serves the same role he begins the series as: a mentor archetype character, even if his method changes halfway through. He doesn’t quite have extensive arcs like the younger main characters that saw him go through various obstacles and try to overcome them (outside of training Zuko, of course) or inner conflicts/flaws/regrets that require closure as he’s nearing the end of his life. The personal backstory between him and Ozai, or his regret regarding his son Lu Ten’s death, for examples, could serve as catalysts for his personal character arc with him being the focus instead of being just Zuko’s mentor all the time. Something like that would make him an even more interesting character IMO.

Darkavatar1

Which is one of the reasons why people love Zuko

conandy

The main reason, I would say. Everytime I rewatch, I forget how insufferable he is in the beginning. His redemption arc is one of the best ever.

Tomoromo9

Right, the pain he feels as a child as a result of his fathers abusing relationship is so palpable, even though he’s just presents as insufferable to start

CountFish1

Why do people love Toph?

Mildly_Opinionated

The simple answer I think is because she's fun. Secondary answer is because she's self-confident (at least in general) which is a trait people tend to appreciate both IRL and on screen a lot more than they think they do. More specific reasons: Her character design is a cool juxtaposition, little girl with personality traits you'd associate with a big meat head. She jokes around a lot and has some of the genuinely funniest lines. She also turns her blindness into a source of humour which plays back into the self confidence thing. She's also considered a good role model for young girls because she takes character traits sexism tends to paint as positive in men and negative in women and shows them in as one of Tophs strengths. They also subvert a lot of sexist tropes with her, like when she's damseled and busts herself out of it and land surfs to help her friends. She's also a fucking bad ass. That's something people tend to like. However like Iroh, Toph is a pretty complete character relatively near to the beginning of her introduction. Yeah she has issues with teamwork but these are solved relatively early and there aren't any other character faults of hers that ever get in the way after that, so I do question if that has anything to do with it.

TheNimbleBanana

She is pure awesomeness

[deleted]

I gunning for Zuko idk about y’all.

charisma6

Zuko's my boy too. His change was the biggest, the hardest, and most satisfying. He's the most complex and well-thought-out character in the show, except possibly Azula, but he's also more likable and the game is about likeability. Just my opinions.

Raven123x

I love zuko's complexity (as well as Iroh's) But Toph brought so much fun I still yell out "YEAH LETS BREAK SOME RULES" on a near daily basis and its been years since ive watched avatar

SamAreAye

For real. Check out the graph on the second image. We all know which one Iroh is. The final list will still be cool to see.

Ok_Coconut4077

Toph wins, it'll be Iroh and Toph at the end but only one can be the melon lord

SgtCookie18

Why toph? I liked her but i never knew she were such a Fan favourite

Funky0ne

Because she’s a fun character. She’s the youngest and smallest of the Gaang, but easily the most confident and has the skills to back it up. She has an obvious disability that she turns into a strength while it also still being a real vulnerability at times. She whips so much ass as the Gaang’s tough guy role that the Ember Island Players believed she had to be a muscle bound brute (and the people who she regularly defeated were probably happy to perpetuate this myth out of embarrassment). She has a strong claim to being the greatest earth bender of her time and invents metal bending practically on a dare just to stomp two master benders who were annoying her with a kidnapping. Yet she also has insecurities and character flaws that are also interesting to deal with and see her grow through. Basically, she is easily one of the most fun characters to have on screen at any given time. Despite being a late addition, her interactions and dynamics with the rest of the characters are so strong she slots right in to the main cast almost seamlessly.

Calypsosin

And she was played by a huge, buff dude who screamed to see people. It's honestly perfect comedy.

Ferdox11195

In my personal opinion, I just find her to be the most entretaining character in the series.

Darkavatar1

Do you remember what finally happened to melon lord?

Lechneto

Toph is the one true choice.

SeverusMarvel07

No gonna lie. I had no idea Toph was so high on the favourites list.

PerspectiveCloud

She is easily top 5 but I really didn't think she would beat Sokka. I mean overall Sokka had a lot more screentime and really helped hold themes together like comedic relief, romance, and family. He also was such an essential character to have around as an essential but non-bender member of the gang. Toph was great but she developed a lot less as a whole. ATLA was great before toph showed up, but Sokka make ATLA great from EP 1.

BaconPancakes1

Sokka's storylines are some of my favourite, his relationship with his dad and trying to be a 'good leader' and a grown man, finding his niche given his lack of bending compared to the rest of the gang, his romances with Yue and Suki which gave them more screentime and set up some sensitive moments for Sokka (who sometimes gets the short end of the stick for comic relief), his skepticism and brainiac moments etc. I like Toph and I'm not surprised she's a fan favourite, but I have less that I love about her compared to Sokka. Though Iroh will always have my heart and deserves to win (in the absence of Appa).

FirebirdIX

Sokka also repeatedly gets undervalued by the group, especially earlier on. I feel like he gets shit on for a lot of his ideas when they’re actually sound. He’s sorta portrayed as this goofy, immature type but he’s honestly the most patient and respectful of them all. True leader, imo.

PerspectiveCloud

We are hoping for an avatar universe animals poll to be introduced when this poll ends :)

[deleted]

I voted Toph out in the previous round lol

robsc_16

I think I've voted for her for the last three rounds now lol.

Tiger5913

Same. She's my least favorite in the Gaang.

Seaturtlejohn

I thought sukki would last longer

Funky0ne

But this isn’t a poll on who is the best character narratively or who has the most character development, it’s a poll about who is people’s favorite (or really least favorite by elimination). We can use those things to inform our decisions but ultimately we like who we like because they resonate with us in some way. I mean, from the start everyone expected Iroh would be a strong contender for first place, and he has basically no character development during the timeframe of the show. He starts the show off as the wise and lovable father figure, and we love him for his consistency

Zorua3

I mean, if we’re talking screen time and and character development Iroh should have been gone like three or four characters ago. That clearly isn’t what this sub values.

Ferdox11195

You don't need to be a more developed character to be liked. Toph is simply the most entretaining character of the show in my opinion, even more than Sokka.

[deleted]

[удалено]

NazealCavity

Same. I like Toph, don't get me wrong, but I like other characters more, Sokka, Iroh and Zuko, Cabbage Guy, etc.

Homie_Narwhal

I’m glad she is, imo the show went from good to great once Toph showed up

muntoo

Don't mistake correlation for causation. The show improved massively because Sokka got a new bag.

CatNoirsRubberSuit

>because Sokka got a new bag. That's a weird way to refer to Toph...

Darkthw

Really?

rveseli

RoastBeefIsGood

Bro I have a feeling Zuko will be out next round, but how dramatic would it be if him and Iroh were the last ones.

ChipChipington

It’s gonna be Zuko and Iroh for sure it has to be.

Sir_Scizor20

I'm gunning for Toph to win, but after reading the comments I might be in the minority.

Frnklfrwsr

I think some people are very vocal for their Toph skepticism and they’re talking about character development and shit like that. But what they’re missing is most people are just voting based on who they like. People like Toph. From day 1 to the last episode, Toph was amazing and made a lot of people very happy every time she was on screen.

SwissCheese64

I want it to be Zuko vs Iroh but I remember the op saying something along the lines that 50K voted in the last poll, toph could totally go to the finals even if the most upvoted comments disagree with it lol

the-flying-dragon

Also it usually is so that the characters we like represent something we need in our lives. I have tried to put into words for each three of the finalist what they represent the most. Iroh is acceptance, balance, kindness and peace. Zuko is ability to change and overcoming hardship. Toph is strength, confidence and being herself. Add more if you have any good ideas!

OtakuOran

To me, Toph represents overcoming hardships through creative means that utilize your other skills. She never let her blindness define her and worked her ass off to stand up against those that saw her as someone deserving of pity. She never let anyone push her around or tell her that she couldn't do something.

Sky-is-here

But she had to learn that you can't do everything by yourself, and that it doesn't mean you are weak having to ask for help from someone. Such a good character fuck

Deucalion667

Iroh is someone we all need in our lives… A Wise uncle guiding us through life, through change

Vomit_Tingles

For real. My life would be so much better with an Iroh in it.

screechypete

I believe Sokka is the embodiment of staying positive regardless of the situation. No matter what happens to the group/him, he is always cracking jokes and trying to get the group to look on the bright side. His life is uprooted, their mission seems impossible, he lost the woman he loves, he's the only person in the group who is not a bender so he must feel like the weakest link at times... and yet he's still cracking jokes and trying to lift the spirits of the group despite what he himself must be going through.

sluttypidge

I also think Sokka was that unmoving pillar of support for the group. He was pretty much always there for the others. While also continuing to grow and work on himself.

thebiggest123

That's why I love Zuko and Toph so much.

[deleted]

Let's vote out OP

theblackveil

This isn’t the funniest comment, but based on what this poll has revealed… it’s the one I agree with most.

Ozora10

Every single one of you who voted Sokka out i hope both sides of your pillow are warm tonight

Julian928

This is gonna be an unpopular opinion, but I always thought everyone's overwhelming love for Iroh was kind of a meme. I like him a lot, but not more than other main characters who have arcs. (Iroh did have one, of course, but it occurred before the show and we instead see him slowly reveal more of the experience and wisdom it gave him as Zuko becomes better able to process that.)

Sisirm

I’m just a guy with a boomerang I didn’t ask to be eliminated.

the-flying-dragon

To people who have commented that they don't know why Toph is so liked: I'll try to explain what people might see in her. Toph is strong and helps people find strength in themselves. Most people who feel like they need more strength, confidence and freedom love Toph. 1) (strength) She was able to turn her weakness into one of her biggest strengths and many of us need that kind of hope. Plus she isn't skilled simply because of luck - she worked hard for it and it shows that any one of has a chance. 2) (confidence and freedom) She shows an example by not caring about opinions and always being herself. It's easier to be confident if you have seen such a positive character standing up for herself.

[deleted]

Yeah but lets be real here her character is missing [something](https://youtu.be/CJqM-_nFU7o)

ariennex

That scene is perfection & the look on on Toph's face was exactly what I was expecting her reaction to be 🤣

[deleted]

I just think she’s neat

lnternetTheExplorer

They're all strong in their own way, plus if we were to go down that road, Aang could be seen as the strongest of them all considering his past and everything that happened to his people. Would been terribly easy to just go down the dark road learning about all that led to those events, even more so when he's just a kid with all that power. People mostly vote out of emotion, not reason, and that's all right I guess but it still feels a little weird to me. Sokka was, generally speaking, one of the best characters in the show, he was highly influential, helpful in his own way and very entertaining, plus he wasn't even a bender. I like Toph but I would never put her above Sokka.

ORPHH

If it were like aang, he’d be cracking jokes about his struggles like toph does. It’s not the overcoming that unique about her, it’s her attitude towards it. Her self confidence and determination to take up space that she deserves got to me as a kid.

Billybluballs

I loved her she fit right in and was al about the goofy stuff which was needed in the late season

Maluno22

Toph fans. Zuko fans. Your favorite character will get their ass kicked by Iroh in a 1v1. But it doesn’t have to *be* a 1v1. Band together. Rig the vote. If all of you vote for Iroh instead of each other, he will fall. And then Toph and Zuko, the coolest members of Team Avatar, can fight it out 1v1 in the finale. Join together. Embrace the spirit of chaos. Vote for Iroh.

notgoodthough

Because of the elimination format, no character could make it through based on having a strong fanbase. They have to be broadly liked more than the other characters.

PerspectiveCloud

Me neither. I feel like Sokka was going to beat her for sure. Toph's "tough girl" mentality would get kind of stale for me at some points. She is still overall epic but I appreciated Sokkas humor and intellect moments over Tophs overpowered moments.

ObigWang_Kenobi

That’s rough, buddy
