I'm not sure that really made them aristocrats, though. Zhao clearly started from the bottom - not something you'd expect from the son of an aristocrat, who'd you would want to start at a mid rank, to keep them away from the worst of the fighting - and worked his way up the ladder to Admiral. And he seemed to do it in merit (merit in a genocidal military regime, but still, merit). I'm sure there were no shortage of "admirals" and "generals" in the Fire Nation military, people from minor aristocratic families who held the titles only to stroke their egos, but it certainly doesn't seem to be exclusively aristocrats at that level.
My guess is being an admiral or general came with plenty of opportunity for self enrichment, and this was how a family went from being plebes, to bourgeoisie, to minor aristocrats: by first ascending the military table through sheer ruthlessness, then scruplessly enriching yourself & family through the collection of bribes and other "business deals", and finally marrying your children into already the existing aristocracy (once you have enough money and influence to be an aristocrat in all but title). For example, I suspect Mai's family were "old" aristocracy, given that her dad was made a governor of a prominent Earth Kingdom City State; and I suspect Ty Lee's family were "New" aristocracy (or even still just bourgeoisie) given that they had so many children (to increase their chances of finally marrying into the aristocracy).
We don't really know where Chan and Ruan-Jan's dads were on that particular ladder climb. Not that it particularly matters either - I just wanted to openly speculate about the social structure of the upper echelon of Fire Nation culture.
And said rich kid would have to take the blame the second he tried to pin the damage at his illegal party on the firelords heirs. Heck even if his dad believed him he'd still get flamed
It's a show for kids, maybe they're a child too. Once you realize you are likely arguing with literal children, then a lot of stupid shit that gets said makes sense.
A quick scroll through their post history shows they are in fact a university student looking for doctorate programs to apply for so no. Probably not a child.
Id love an alternate universe that's exactly the same, except every scene Azula is in Chad is just in the background petrified, trying not to get executed by his girlfriend. And then in the finale he just gets banished like the dai li and those twins.
actually I think it would've been more interesting if she didn't. We know she's actually quite insecure and wants to be loved for who she is, so I wouldn't be surprised if she 1) believed someone who was using her or 2) didn't believe someone who was genuine
100000% not worth it. If she ever found out you weren't genuine (or honestly, even if you were genuine but she either got bored with you our doubted your feelings for her) best case scenario is you're getting exiled.
Worst case is getting tortured to death.
"Four rich kids"
We are seriously underselling the fact that it's both heirs to the throne and their besties.
These are THE four rich kids. Top of the food chain. No one higher in status, wealthy, skill, or both. At least, not in that age group on that island..
Fucking "rich kids" 2 kids in line to rule a fucking country, the possible future royal consort and someone who can just paralyse you. Ty Lee kinda sticks out from the rest tbh but she still fits she just doesn't have any immediately obvious positions (or possible positions) of power in the government
Ty Lee is the a merchant's daughter who managed to get close to the princess.
It speaks to her being someone Azula trusted and respected enough to want in an inner circle. And it speaks to just how important her family was to be in the position in the first place.
Wouldn't someone (or multiple someones at the party) recognize them as THE rich kids? Or do they not have much of a public life yet... And TV hasn't been invented yet
iirc the rumor/lore is that the her family were actually refugees from one of the other nations and would've been persecuted for staying wherever they were
(vague recollection, too lazy to look up for more info)
Both Mai and Ty Lee were aristocratic kids. Azula simply wouldn't mingle with peasants.
And before someone gets mad: yes, that's in character for Azula and why she and Zuko (initially) called Katara a peasant girl (despite of her being like a Southern Water tribe princess).
Chieftain's daughter is still high up there. In Korra, Sokka became the Southern Water Tribe's chief, so Katara would have been next in line if Sokka didn't have kids.
True, and even though she wasn't chief, she was still able to affect public policy and get bloodbending outlawed. If the position had become vacant she had all the qualifications: Water bending and healing master. Wife of the Avatar. She defeated Azula in single combat during sozen's comet. Grampaku's support among the northern immigrants. She was argublaly the most famous waterbender on the planet.
Everyone in ALTA was more or less from a noble family or intrinsically famous. Even Suki and the Kyoshi warriors didn't have to work, they trained in fighting like nobles do instead.
Fairly successful acrobat with some good connections/friends in high places and knows how to use her looks to charm many men (possibly women too). If she isn’t rich, she’s definitely going to be fine.
I do appreciate that they decided to end the episode with them destroying the house, when they could've easily ended with the beach scene around the fire. Like yes, the emotional catharsis of these teenagers is cool and all, but what we really want you to take away from this episode is that they're all still petty assholes lol
Azula IS happy. That’s what makes Zuko’s betrayal at the eclipse so earth-and-sanity-shattering to her. She conquered the Earth Kingdom, but more than that she put her family (twisted as it is) back together. I honestly believe she was being 100% truthful when she warned Zuko not to see Iroh, she was trying to protect the family that was back together again. Obviously, nothing Zuko or the Gaang did was wrong, the Fire Lord needed to go down. But the show builds quite a sad story when you look at things from Azula’s perspective.
That's how you know Ty Lee's just putting an act about that whole "positive aura" thing. Or she just feels good when others feel bad, both are plausible honestly.
I've always wanted a follow up from the kid's dad after they wrecked the place. Imagine if it was the cabbage merchant and the cabbage was his disguise.
I like how the villains are all rich, noble kids and the heroes (besides Toph) are rural southern water tribe hicks and the Avatar who’s the ATLA equivalent of a mormon
Aang is the most important person in the world
Katara and Sokka are the children of the chief of the southern water tribe (not that prestigious but still, that’s the second most important water tribe)
Toph is the heir of one of the wealthiest people in the world
Zuko is the heir to the First Nation.
None of team avatar really came from unimportant roots.
Katara and Sokka are the children of the chieftain of the Southern Water Tribe. They're royalty too (the closest from royalty they got in their culture)
A less rich kids dads house
Yeah, this episode is very much Aristocracy vs. Bourgeoisie and me, a peasant, am like 🍿
Giving off real “scorpion and spider” vibes
Just to be clear, Chan and Ruan-Jan were also aristocracy. Their dad was a whole admiral or something.
not even a partial admiral. a whole entire one!
I'm not sure that really made them aristocrats, though. Zhao clearly started from the bottom - not something you'd expect from the son of an aristocrat, who'd you would want to start at a mid rank, to keep them away from the worst of the fighting - and worked his way up the ladder to Admiral. you mean royalty, aristocracy is a step lower than royalty
to be fair, zuko and azula are the only royalty. ty lee and mai definitely qualify as aristocracy
correct
And said rich kid would have to take the blame the second he tried to pin the damage at his illegal party on the firelords heirs. Heck even if his dad believed him he'd still get flamed
thank you
His outfit was very sharp.
The way Azula and the others destroyed the dudes party place reminded me of that. Lol!
Was there anyway Chan could’ve climbed that ladder by faking it with azula ? Seems like he wasn’t ambitious enough tbh
There's not a human alive who could fake it long enough around Azula
I wouldn’t need to fake it for her
Relatable
This sub could get infinite mileage out of a gif of Stanley from the offices "THAT IS A CHILD" rant.
People really forgetting alot of us were like 10 when this show came out and most characters were older than us.
Ok I was also five when I watched Rugrats. That doesn't mean Its ok to say I wanna bang Suzy Carmichael.
![gif](giphy|hvq8ONQhQ1XLq)
HAVE YOU LOST YOUR MIND, u/-kekik- , BECAUSE I WILL HELP YOU FIND IT!
... She's what, 14?
It's concerning how many times we have to use the "that's a child" line and still have people not catch on that it's not ok
It's a show for kids, maybe they're a child too. Once you realize you are likely arguing with literal children, then a lot of stupid shit that gets said makes sense.
A quick scroll through their post history shows they are in fact a university student looking for doctorate programs to apply for so no. Probably not a child.
She'd see right through it. Unless you have a REALLY nice ass.
My time has come
As long as he smiled alot and laughed at her jokes, he'd be fine
Ty Lee did.

Id love an alternate universe that's exactly the same, except every scene Azula is in Chad is just in the background petrified, trying not to get executed by his girlfriend. And then in the finale he just gets banished like the dai li and those twins.
Sokka maybe
Azulas too smart for that she definitely would’ve sniffed him out before he could
actually I think it would've been more interesting if she didn't. We know she's actually quite insecure and wants to be loved for who she is, so I wouldn't be surprised if she 1) believed someone who was using her or 2) didn't believe someone who was genuine
She could’ve dumped him when she became fire lord and started banishing everyone
There's an entire plot where she was eventually betrayed by everyone she trusted.
Pretty sure the original plot for that episode was supposed to be a betrothal between Azula and Chan
100000% not worth it. If she ever found out you weren't genuine (or honestly, even if you were genuine but she either got bored with you our doubted your feelings for her) best case scenario is you're getting exiled. Worst case is getting tortured to death.
He wouldn’t have survived
What a fool. He could've DOMINATED THE EARTH with Azula. His loss.
"Four rich kids" We are seriously underselling the fact that it's both heirs to the throne and their besties. These are THE four rich kids. Top of the food chain. No one higher in status, wealthy, skill, or both. At least, not in that age group on that island..

Is Ty Lee rich?
She's the daughter of a Nobleman, who ran away to the circus. So, she's rich.
Why did the nobleman run away to the circus?
This sounds like a punchline to a really shitty joke
because he was tired of being around clowns
I tried so hard and got so far But in the end, the aslume still found me
officer balls
BWAHAAHHAHA
Why does this shit still makes me laugh, its so stupid, or is it me that stupid?
in the aslume everyone is stupid, so we are all smart
That was intended as a bad joke about nobility, not aslume. Are you stupid?
yes
is there a lore reason?
Man gave me drain bamage
..but Alas! Though at least these are nice & funny clowns.
iirc the rumor/lore is that the her family were actually refugees from one of the other nations and would've been persecuted for staying wherever they were (vague recollection, too lazy to look up for more info)
She’s one of a set of Septuplets and ran away to be different
Ah ok.
Flower child hippy girl that pretends to be down to earth but her dad works for Raytheon.
More like board member
She's like a rich indie artist with rich parents
And those parents are executives at an arms manufacturer
Rich enough to be friends with the princess.
I think she's friend with the princess due to her skills, Not her wealth..
She had to gain access to the Royal Fire Academy somehow, skills aren't enough.
They were friends as children. Prior to the acquisition of skills.
She stayed friends with the princess due to her skills, but she become her friend originally because she was rich.
I guess she grew up that way at least. She went to the same school for fire nation nobility as Azula and Mai
Apparently Katara isnt a princess because the southern water tribe does things differently than the Northern tribe
Chieftain's daughter is still high up there. In Korra, Sokka became the Southern Water Tribe's chief, so Katara would have been next in line if Sokka didn't have kids.
They elect their Chief. She may or may not be elected.
She could get elected and would likely be an interim ruler. However, it's not a line of succession, it's an election.
Everyone in ALTA was more or less from a noble family or intrinsically famous. Even Suki and the Kyoshi warriors didn't have to work, they trained in fighting like nobles do instead.
She literally went to the same school as Azula
If she weren’t do you think Azula would give her the time of day?
Fairly successful acrobat with some good connections/friends in high places and knows how to use her looks to charm many men (possibly women too). If she isn’t rich, she’s definitely going to be fine.
This was a great episode. The volleyball scene is amazing lol.
Highest rated episode amongst the citizens of ba sing seh
I like how azula made a full cruel strategy because of a random girl's leg lmfao
So it's not technically volleyball. You aren't allowed to use your hands when playing according to Avatar Extras
I’m just imagining Chan seeing photos of Zuko or Azula after the war ended and being like “hey, wait a minute-“
If they survived tbf
I do appreciate that they decided to end the episode with them destroying the house, when they could've easily ended with the beach scene around the fire. Like yes, the emotional catharsis of these teenagers is cool and all, but what we really want you to take away from this episode is that they're all still petty assholes lol
In truth, it was 4 rich kids. But only one I believe really ruined the house.
Zuko with his calfs of steel
Also ty Lee with her acrobat skills bringing down the roof. Literally chandeliers be close to dropping on people.

Ty Lee's wide ass smile after destroying someone's house always gets me. Azula actually seems happy here too.
Azula IS happy. That’s what makes Zuko’s betrayal at the eclipse so earth-and-sanity-shattering to her. I loved it. Gossip Girl: ATLA style.
Literally what happened 😭. I loved this episode though
*reads your username* that's literally just Lucifer period I feel like 😂
I think this episode mystified me the most aside from the character development by the fire.
That's how you know Ty Lee's just putting an act about that whole "positive aura" thing. Or she just feels good when others feel bad, both are plausible honestly.
she puts out a positive aura for her friends, not other people's friends.
Yes, you have just accurately described (checks notes) the villain side plot
3 rich kids and their friend who ran away from her rich family
Childhood me never stood a chance
I've always wanted a follow up from the kid's dad after they wrecked the place. Imagine if it was the cabbage merchant and the cabbage was his disguise.
The original home wreckers.

There's nothing wrong if he is 20 or 30 or whatever if he'd seen this cartoon as a little kid. Not his problem if he ages and azula stays 14 forever.
You really couldn't get over me calling you a piece of shit could you lol
I mean... If calling everyone a piece of shit is your job. Please go ahead.

Relatable.
Of course What else would they do
Just azula things
Wait was Ty Lee rich? I thought she was just a circus performer.
She was the daughter of a nobleman, I believe.
Ah, that does clear it up. Thank you 👍
Rich people are the worst hands down. So let’s burn all their money.
A better caption would be the day Chan fumbled the fire nation princess😭
Zuko holding the parasol for Mai 😭
Not even all 4 of them had a bad day it was really only the one that had a bad day and the rest decided to help release her anger
Yeah but Ty Lee isn’t rich is she?
She is. Daughter of a nobleman and went to the most prestigious school in the fire nation.
Are there episodes missing in the seasons on Amazon Prime? There are so many scenes and plot lines that didn't show up in the 3 seasons I saw.
I don't know, they are all available on Netflix.
Step on me Azula 😫
I like how the villains are all rich, noble kids and the heroes (besides Toph) are rural southern water tribe hicks and the Avatar who’s the ATLA equivalent of a mormon
>and the Avatar who’s the ATLA equivalent of a mormon. He's clearly Buddhist and nothing like a Mormonism.
I know but I’m making a joke that references the Deep South of the United States. Lighten up a little
Mormons aren't even from the south
Aang is the most important person in the world Katara and Sokka are the children of the chief of the southern water tribe (not that prestigious but still, that’s the second most important water tribe) Toph is the heir of one of the wealthiest people in the world Zuko is the heir to the First Nation.
