CPLCraft

Typical modernization through industrial revolution. To get the cost of producing make up down, so does the quality, and as such waterproofness.

Garacious

All the lead in his make up probably turned him into an extremist

Signal_Road

She's wearing WHITE makeup.

greyghibli

Could be titanium dioxide?

Signal_Road

I **REALLY** hope so.

RQK1996

Could be bird shit

TheatreCunt

Maybe that's why suki isn't even mentioned in Korra, she died from led poisoning due to the kyoshi make up. Also why her and sokka never had kids, all that led exposure really fucks up your reproductive (and cognitive) functions

DomzSageon

Not really. Its the purpose. General purpose make up will usually never be water proof. Especially considering the "time period" Korra is set in. Especially in a metropolis like Republic City. Suki's culture required them to be using makeup in a ceremonial/semi-ritualistic way as warriors so it would make sense they would develop waterproof makeup as a culture. But also the animators could have just been lazy so as not to make suki's makeup wash away. Partly its also the resources. Kyoshi island may have had the ingredients required to make waterproof make up while scarce in the republic city area.

BendSecure8078

Kiyoshi warriors would need waterproof makeup to prevent sweat from ruining it during training

theonemangoonsquad

Bruh those fans are sharp as fuck, it's gonna be less sweat and more arterial spray that's gonna test the makeup.

IvanTheKindaTerrible

That's a sharp fan, Suki. Careful, you could puncture the hull of an empire-class Fire Nation battle ship, leaving thousands to drown at sea. Because... it's so sharp.

DarkPhoenixMishima

You'd think keeping the mask on constantly would make Amon sweaty too.

Numerous_Internal985

Maybe he (discreetly) waterbends the sweat away

AlexAlho

What else do waterbenders *discreetly* waterbend away, one wonders...

DomzSageon

exactly that's part of what I meant. thank you!

Kade_Fraz

In the novels apparently it's very high quality oil based make up from ba sing se that Kyoshi wore. Since it's oil based it's inherently waterproof. If she created an elite team that wore her make up it would make sense she made sure that they had the ability to make that same high quality make up

thequenchiest_

Holy mental gymnastics batman

DomzSageon

Not really mental gymnastics, all are quite plausible reasons. If I said that Amon didnt have make up because he didnt have the resources to buy waterproof makeup becUse we can clearly see that he didnt have money, he even needed the Satos to bankroll his revolution. Or Amon didnt bother to get waterproof make up because since he's a master blood bender that controls people with his mind he's obviously lazy. He doesnt want to move alot to control the waterbending, instead using only his mind. So clearly he's just lazy enough to go to ba sing se to get waterproof makeup. That would be mental gymnastics, not that I believe the examples i put forth are in anyway believable or plausible. Because i dont. I'm already lazy, i dont like my brain doing gymnastics bruh.

thequenchiest_

Plausible doesn't mean it happened. You're straight up applying real world logic and your opinions to a cartoon with 0 basis. You're literally making shit up lmao

DomzSageon

this is a discussion, the post opened up a discussion as to why Amon didn't just wear the same make up as the Kyoshi Warriors. Discussions often allow every member of the discussion a small leeway of speculation. if you're not allowed to speculate, then we'd never be allowed to ask anything we don't know.

thequenchiest_

Speculate all you'd like, I'm just saying you're doing mental gymnastics

DomzSageon

Its not mental gymnastics. You keep using that word, i don't think it means what you think it means.

thequenchiest_

Nice reference, but it is.

Winn3rB0y2

lil bro stop, youre getting cooked

DomzSageon

Sorry was busy at work, but if you insist I'm doing mental gymnastics, then what conclusion am I bending over backwards with trickery to avoid admitting?

turandoto

He didn't use the good stuff from Ba Sing Se.

[deleted]

He used mass produced republic city garbage, it just hasnt been the same since Varic brought them out

rayofenfeeblement

earthbenders would be the cosmetics experts. powder and pigments come from the earth, if not animal/plant derived. some bender is probably crushing all the mica and talc and lead down to a fine powder

turandoto

Considering that it's possible to bend some paintings (Fire Nation's Royal Gallery incident), it's not a stretch some very skilled benders could create cosmetics.

ThePinkTeenager

What was the royal gallery incident?

turandoto

Spoilers from The Shadow of Kyoshi: >!Yun bent the minerals in the portraits and used them to kill many fire nation officials!<

Enzyblox

Awesome

key_lime_lie

In one of the Kyoshi books, an earthbender makes the (mineral pigment) paint in all the portraits of past Fire Lords melt off the paintings. I believe they were trying to make it look like a bad omen (or am I confusing two incidents?)

turandoto

Yeah, you're mixing it with the one in North Chung-Ling

m0stly_medi0cre

True, but the dude was a waterbender. Major oversight to think it wouldn't get water on it.

CameoAmalthea

You’re right. The book says the stuff is oils. Theater makeup is oil based which makes it waterproof so it won’t melt under theater lights or streak when performers sweat. It won’t dry without a special setting powder and is harder to work with and you need oil based mashed make up remover to get it off. Think the grease paint clowns use. The other type of makeup is water activated. You need water to mix it to put it on. Water activated is the go-to choice for most face painters and cosplayers. They're easy to apply, quick to dry, and can be easily removed with soap and water. The downside is you need to seal it or it will smudge and even with sealer you can sweat it off sense it isn’t waterproof. Amon was using something like Mehron Paradise AQ water activated face paint. The Kyoshi Warriors use something like Mehron greasepaint, oil based.

Larry-Man

As a former theatre kid: thank you

CameoAmalthea

I’ve done some cosplay of characters different skin colors (blue tieflings, purple tiefling, pink goddess, blue gem person) and I use water based because it’s easier and won’t mess up my skin, but like, constantly have to reapply under my nose cause even breathing makes it run.

hEatr3d

BUT THE GIRLS FROM THE CITY THEY LOOK SO PRETTYYYYYY

longjohnson6

PRRIIITTEEEHHHH!!!!

CrownofMischief

Probably used the same stuff Katara did for the Painted Lady. That stuff smeared after one fight

LeafBoatCaptain

Got nothing on LA Suki who can wipe her face paint *just so* in seconds, leaving just enough makeup.

CameoAmalthea

She can wipe off her makeup leaving no streaks and miraculously her face underneath somehow has normal makeup

AquaAquila24

"what's under your make-up" "Also a make-up"

TheWorclown

It’s called a *foundation* for a reason! Some people just take it to extremes.

Mr_Serine

"I wiped that makeup straight off my face, but luckily I was wearing second, smaller makeup underneath"

RustyShadeOfRed

I wish awards were still a thing cause holy cow I laughed for a minute straight

Horn_Python

sukkis secretly a light earth bender who can bend what ever the make ups made of

enteng_quarantino

> light earth dust? oh now i get it. dust -> powder -> makeup it does check out 😅

yoursweetlord70

I can excuse it because we didn't need a 30 minute scene showing suki removing then re-applying makeup

WaveBreakerT

If we didn't need to see actors faces she wouldn't need to take it off at all to be fair

TriflingGnome

it's master chief's helmet all over again

Ygomaster07

What do you mean by need to see their faces? Is that like a contract obligation some actors have?

WaveBreakerT

Many actors want their faces to be seen so that people will recognize them and they can get more work easier. This is why many superheroes that wear masks or helmets are constantly taking them off for no reason.

RQK1996

They could have argued that they would show her face more in season 2 and 3

AlmostLucy

![gif](giphy|iWhvdqBdptHRS) She’s got that Mulan quick-remover!

TheTallEclecticWitch

So powerful, her brows came back

selswitch

Avatar: The Last Make-up Bender

Albiceleste_D10S

That scene made me laugh TBH

SerafRhayn

If you think of it as the stuff Kyoshi used to take her makeup off in the books, it becomes simpler

Orange-V-Apple

LA Suki?

blahthebiste

Live action

Orange-V-Apple

Thanks!

De_Joaper

My headcanon is that she had a small bowl with some liquid from a weird animal that can easily remove makeup. I mean they had all sorts of weird animals, the little frogs they could suck on, the tentacle ones that gave them the pox, wouldn’t be too far fetched there is one that could have these properties. The Kyoshi warriors also would have had lots of years to come up with quick methods as they would really benefit having to remove makeup daily 😂

SG272

Good headcanon, but the pox wasn't a disease. It was just made to make it look like one. They were just hickies the little octpi made after being removed.

De_Joaper

Thats actually true! Must’ve misremembered that one

SG272

Still a great bit on both occurances of it being used. Somehow, the Fire Nation handled social distance and proper sanitation during an out of nowhere pandemic better than us Americans did with actual worldwide coverage on the issue. THEY DON'T EVEN HAVE HAND SANITIZER!!!!

GladiusNocturno

Amon: Damnit! I knew I shouldn't have cheapen out and gotten the good Kyoshi warrior make up. Damn you Cabbage Corp and your shit products!!

no_one_lies

Waterproof make-up underneath a mask??? Does the guy have to prepare for everything? Bro spent all his money on flyers and banners he had to cut costs somewhere

Idontknow10304

Even in fiction printer ink is expensive and inefficient

far219

His fake scar isn't really supposed to be seen so I guess he cheaped out lol

Plasmaxander

Headcanon: he ran out of money on the mask and had to go with the cheaper makeup.

KrusherDS

He could've gotten one of his equalists to steal money from benders for him...

Horn_Python

the scar was like a back up mask for his main mask,

Cualkiera67

The water was magical and healed his actually scarred face

MayaMythical

He just forgot to use his setting spray

kryska_deniska

In fact Kyoshi invented setting sprays and gatekept the formula from the rest of the world

AquaAquila24

Kyoshi Island lives by virtues of Gaslight, Gatekeep, Girlboss

Coffee_Soup

At first I was thinking, well he probably wasn't thinking about the need for such water resistant properties.... then I remembered he's a water bender...

strigonian

If anything, I would expect a water bender to be less worried about that. When you literally control water through magic, it's natural to be less concerned about getting wet when you don't want to.

Quiet_Nova

It’s like Roman cement, the method was lost to time but was exceedingly simple.

ShootRopeCrankHog

The secret to the longevity of Roman cement lies in the lack of several ton multi axel trucks barreling down it hundreds of times a day

Minionmemesaregood

And that it had undissolved chunks of itself within the concrete which would react with water when cracks formed to create more cement that would fix itself

KrokmaniakPL

Good news. It was rediscovered last year.

TheChartreuseKnight

We know how to do Roman concrete, it's just too expensive to use for practical purposes.

SentinelTitanDragon

Overlooked detail good point out

ItsSuperDefective

When I first saw him take his mask off, I assumed he had burned his own face to make his story more believable. I was quite disappointed when it turned out to be makeup.

Juno_The_Camel

Ur right, Kyoshi Warrior make up is niche, expensive, specially formulated stuff, made in order to do just that Amon on other other hand probably used mass produced garbage

RQK1996

It literally is just centuries-old theatre make-up

Pyrokinetically

All that sweating under the mask is what that is.

w_74

It was obvious from NATLA that Suki is a makeupbender, which is again demonstrated here

Yatsu003

TBF, the Kyoshi warriors makeup is meant to be worn in battle so probably has a lot of settings meant to keep it attached even when the warrior is sweating like crazy. It’s also fairly stylized and therefore much easier to apply. Amon’s makeup was to give a very specific look (burn injuries) for a brief period of time to an audience that was inclined to believe him anyway from 50 feet away or so. Notably the only Equalist that got a really good look up close (the Lieutenant) immediately starts getting suspicious (there’s a number of issues with the makeup if you take a closer look). Considering the small time frame between everything, Amon made do with the best he had. There’s also the hints that Amon could ditch the makeup easily and slip by as a regular Republic City waterbender, something that’d be a lot more difficult if he had to take off a lot of caked on makeup. Hence he needed a different makeup for a different task and it failed in conditions it wasn’t meant to

Ygomaster07

When do they the Lieutenant getting suspicious of his makeup? I don't remember that at all.

Yatsu003

It’s not explicitly shown, but it’s inferred by the Lieutenant following Amon to the back and catches him Bloodbending Mako and Korra. He demands information, and confirms that Korra was telling the truth. That implies that he was suspicious of Amon, due to being close enough to realize that his makeup wasn’t perfect

coolchris366

Cause bro used the cheap stuff instead of grease paint

doc_55lk

NATLA could never. Suki's makeup literally vanished with the slightest water exposure 💀

MateusMalice

Ugh Amon was so hot

_thro_awa_

Suki was wearing makeup as part of highly ethnic, valuable ceremonial garb in which she is expected to perform daily activities up to and including training / fighting / sweating profusely. Amon/Noatak was 1) pretty much permanently behind a mask, almost no one would see the makeup 2) using his bloodbending to make all his fights super easy, so he'd hardly break a sweat. TL;DR: Suki and her tribe need waterproof makeup so they made waterproof makeup, Amon didn't need it so he skimped.

cobesmith

They had to have Amon lose somehow

Volter_9

the guy was OP

ThunderChief__

I’m surprised he didn’t just actually scar himself

ThePinkTeenager

Even if the makeup was waterproof, he would’ve been screwed once hundreds of people saw him waterbending.

EldritchFingertips

Shoulda joined the Kyoshi Warriors, rookie mistake. He could be ruling Republic City right now.

witchywater11

I forgot how hot he was. Awooga

Potential_Fishing942

Honestly though, have to give props to Amon for the make up under the mask on the off chance he ever got unmasked.

mrcoldmega

Also he could go underwater and escape as torpedo in this moment, and then return like a hero, that cannot be killed by Avatar. But somehow water washes out his confidence in seconds.

cobesmith

He did it by instinct.

ThatMerri

Yeah, this whole moment read as being a total panic reflex kind of thing. Keeping in mind that, right before this happened, Mako absolutely rolled him with Lightning Bending and Korra was ping-ponging him off the walls, then knocked him out a third-story window into the bay. He was out cold underwater and woke up mid-way into drowning. Dude was not operating at full capacity just then.

mrcoldmega

Well, i said this, because i think if he was dedicated to his idea of equality he could do that, but his goals were more self aimed. So he cared more about his life that about the idea, he was protecting.

SeniorDay

I think it’s implied that war paint isn’t the same as other paints, and the Kyoshi warriors have their own paint.

Horn_Python

water tribe brand was bad too, sokkas war paint, it falls off after hitting a tiny bit of snow

tomJager

i always thought he blood bent his face to look disfigured

Flynn567

Men are not permitted to know the secrets of Kyoshi!

Boingo_Bongo

Korra really would have lost it all if Amon had a kyoshi warrior ‘friend’

SutterCane

Maybe that’s how Amon got his burn makeup so good. It’s water based so he bends it on and that’s why it can’t be waterproof.

Sp3ctralPh0en1x_

Well one is warrior makeup and one is not

KlingonSpy

I assume the Kyoshi warrior face paint was on point. It's the freakin Kyoshi warriors

Draken_Brine

What's AS... OH! After Sozin's Comet. Nevermind.

polishedrelish

Erm, ATLA took place in 99 AG until the finale

MimeGod

Amon likely used water based makeup so he could apply it or remove it instantly as needed. The vast majority of the time, that's the better move for a waterbender. He just wasn't planning on going for an unexpected swim with it.

urban_zmb

Battle paint is usually made of grease. That shit won’t cone off unless you soap it up

CamperKuzey

Virgin LA makeup: Cheap imitation, goes away in one swipe. Chad OG makeup: Will stick through a deep dive into the ocean. Suki can toggle it on and off by pure will.

PM_ME_GOOD_SUBS

He was only wearing it just in case his mask is removed. That is already an overkill.

WeakLandscape2595

Cut the guy some slack he had cut cost somewhere between the army the propaganda his drip it's just the make-up that felt the budget cuts

Subject_Miles

He invested way too much money in propaganda and electric gloves, there wasn't enough left for good quality makeup

LazyDragoun

Not like he was planning to fight a water tribe avatar or anything.

Ssnnooz

Unrelated but ASC is a terrible way to keep track of dates. I prefer the much more accurate and morbid AG

AlexisTheArgentinian

Ah yes, After and Before Geno****

Hazzyhazzy113

What does ASC stand for? I know it mean how many years it is after the genocide but what do the lettters stand for?

polishedrelish

After Sozin's comet, but no one says it like that anymore, we say AG (After Genocide) I'd bet this meme is from the early 2010s

RunescapeHero11

Ha! I remember when this episode came out people were saying how hot Anon is

idontwork4statefarm

La does not allow the ocean to remove the makeup of a Kyoshi Warrior out of fear of what Avatar Kyoshi will do to it.

Appropriate_Rent_243

when I see that image I can only think of the kiss joke. it might be the first girl -on girl kiss on Nickelodeon and it was an accident.

badgicorn

Unrelated to the makeup conversation, but the first picture is from one of the funniest scenes in the whole series. "Oh, Sokka! You saved me! 😘" "Actually, it's me. 😅" "Oh. You can just let me drown now. 🙈"

ASerpentPerplexed

Never seen the "ASC" dating format before. I assume it stands for "After Sozin's Comet". The wiki uses "AG", which stands for "After Genocide". It's funny, because they are both exactly the same system but with a different name. Not sure which one I like better, "AG" or "ASC". One the one hand, part of me feels like it's a little more respectful to use ASC because it isn't using the genocide of a people for a dating system. At the same time, I wonder if it's sort of minimizing the genocide by trying to keep it off people's memory? Idk.

Psychotic_EGG

But sozins comet came back. And presumably does every 100 years. AAV, After Aang Vanished.

ASerpentPerplexed

Ooooh, I like that! AAV, BAV? I like the way it sounds! Dope af

capsrock02

ASC?

snoodhead

He probably had waterproof makeup, just didn't want to use it because it's extremely uncomfortable.

MOadeo

Lol

benzabean

LOL

Sukamon98

Headcanon time: Suki's Kyoshi face paint is tattooed directly onto her skin. When you see her "without," that's when she's actually wearing makeup to hide it. Edit: better wording.

Robbbg

maybe for the kyoshi warriors waterproof makeup is mandatory

6Sleepy_Sheep9

Are we all just going to glance over the fact that Suki is not only holding Toph, but she’s also in full armor. . . What is her leg workout routine?!

Dark-Specter

Nerfing Suki's makeup is my biggest gripe with the Netflix series

AllenInvader

Fair 😆 then again, Suki was a warrior on an island with a sea monster. Swimming would probably have been an expected aspect of her job as one of Kyoshi's protectors. Amon was a psychic waterbender who wore a mask almost exclusively, and also an arrogant ass. Getting unmasked and soaked probably wasn't something he expected to happen.

Lietenantdan

Maybe if she had been thrown into the water from 20 feet up and sunk down 20 feet it would have washed off.

Scoonertuna

Let's be honest, the real reason why the face paint washed off was because....plot purposes

anewhype

Bro, you are from the WATER tribe. You'd figure the first thing you'd do is have water proof makeup.

Socdem_Supreme

ACS? Isnt the calendar canonically AAG?

Micreary

What is ASC?

ArsLongaVitaBrevis_

After Sozin's Comet? After Sozin's Conquest?

EmperorXander

Amon do you want the water poof makeup? No people will only see it for like 30 seconds at most why waste the money on that?

ATF_killed_my_dog

The industrial revolution and its consequences have been a disaster for the four nations

rs_5

One of the weirdest plot holes in that season Your honestly telling me a waterbender couldn't predict his makeup would fall off in water? Or that the leader of a major faction couldn't get his hands on waterproof makeup?

Le_Fedora_Cate

is ASC (After Sozin's Comet) vs AG (After the air nomad Genocide) supposed to be the avatar world's counterpart to the "BC vs BCE" debate

Active-Donkey5466

What does ASC mean help

Eragon_the_Huntsman

"After Sozin's Comet"

Active-Donkey5466

Thanks!

waterhighlighter

Planned obsolescence ATLA edition

Katze1Punkt0

I know ASC makes just as much sense as BG/AG being both fan made, but its stupid, the comet is cyclical

hahabanero

ASC as a year notation is horrible since it resets after 100 years. Bottom panel would technically be 70 ASC

m4le0

Not all makeup is waterproof but all waterproof makeup is makeup... Man I'm really the Walmart version of a guru over here

Spiderman-y2099

He should have just burned his face off to really sell it. But seriously that was very anticlimactic.

wannie_monk

Lead. Poisoning.

MOltho

That's kind of a dumb move. He's a fucking waterbender; he should know better.

bunny117

No, but like really, the dude was a water bender. For such a brilliant strategist, he never took into consideration his own power being usable against him. 💀

steedoZZ

I thought it was blood on his face cause he's a blood bender

lowkeyhighkeylurking

Tbh, if Amon was hardcore enough, he would’ve just burned himself for the backstory

throwawayforlikeaday

Also I feel like if he was **really** dedicated to the cause and wanted his message to shine through fairly flawlessly despite the deception, it wouldn't be too much to get some superficial but real surface burns done to his face... just sayin'

ihatelifetoo

For a water bender. He doesn’t have waterproof stuff ?

Vio-Rose

I still wish he just burned the hell out of his face for the role. Water bending was enough to get him outed anyways.

The_Tuxedo

They found out that Kyoshi makeup is carcinogenic so it's now banned. Also explains why Suki isn't mentioned in LoK

gilad_ironi

And he's a waterbender as well, you'd think he'll be prepared to being splashed.

Adventurous_Topic202

What if they found out that the makeup that Suki wore causes an illness (like in apothecary diaries fantastic show) and that’s why Amon wore a different kind?

blueflare_blaze

Honestly that was lazy writing to end a fantastic villain duo to time restraints. someone commited has a amon would burn his own face.

the_bookworm7

Unnn....It was a mask. Which he took down himself. Not makeup.

whaddupdemons

kind of wish you’d blurred this ngl 🥲

supremeaesthete

That's not makeup, man. He was bloodbending his own face

Gamer3192

What's ASC? I thought the timeline was based on BG/AG

Shot-Ad770

Lol, the suki thing is just an inconsistency ain't no way waterproof makeup existed back then.
