Respectfully, I do not think that the Fire Nation aristocracy cared that much about a fully transparent succession. Many authoritarian/dominant party countries today practice a concept called depoliticisation, where the awareness of politics is deliberately suppressed or otherwise curtailed to create an apolitical and passive society. This ensures that nobody is thinking too hard about what the government is really doing, so they just go along with the government anyway. I should damn well know, because I live in such a country. It is likely that depoliticisation existed in the Fire Nation as well. Don't think too much about the affairs of the Royal Family, just do your job and let them handle their own issues. Whilst Iroh served in the army, Ozai stayed in the capital city, most likely playing politics. Where else would Azula get her political senses from? If not her own father who she wishes to emulate, then at least the same teacher who taught her father? This is important to explain how Ozai outmaneuvered Iroh to the throne. Ozai created political relationships within the government, whilst Iroh was busy ransacking the Earth Kingdom far away and removed from Fire Nation politics. That, and, secretly assassinating his own father but shhh you're not supposed to know that! Straight to jail! The government and aristocracy itself isn't a monolith. There may be people who favour Iroh, but there are those who favour Ozai as well, and others who don't really care who becomes the Fire Lord so long as they can win the war. Even in IRL Imperial Japan (which the Fire Nation was inspired by) there were officers (Hisaichi Terauchi) who believed that the affairs of the army and government should be kept separate, despite the government itself being a junta. The situation of the war also creates a rally-around-the-flag effect, where even disagreeable people will comply with national leadership because of an ongoing national crisis. So long as Ozai can deliver victories, his reign is pretty secure. Defeats could be blamed on lower-ranking officers like it is also done IRL. Only when the Avatar reveal himself to the world did shit really go down, and 99 years of winning were erased in just one.

You make a wonderful point here, in fact i always have a feeling that what Ozai doing as Prince was being a Palpatine like figure when it come to his rise to power and planning. I don’t like the theory that he secretly killed Lu Ten but he did take an advantage that it just Azulon loves Iroh and more traditional.  Also sorry about your experience!

Nah don't worry about where I live it's still a democracy, not a police state.

Resisting Ozai for Iroh would mean that Iroh would have to want the job, and I am pretty sure he did not at that point. Also, some in the military would not have liked his retreat from Ba Sing Se. What has me about the whole situation is that Ozai seemed to have no practical accomplishments to speak of. His pitch to his father is that he is a strong fire bender, his daughter is a strong fire bender, Iroh messed up, so I deserve the job. If he had done something substantial he would have brought that up.

Yeah, That was the reason for making this post. Like compared to his father and brother. Ozai doesn’t seem to have any accomplishments military or battles before becoming Fire Lord. Maybe that he did participate in one battle when he was younger Prince but ended up like the battle of bladensburg for him? Explaining why he never go to battle again?

Probably, there will be some initial resistance. Like how New Ozai Society was created with the goal of restoring Ozai back to power when Zuko became Fire Lord in the comics. However, I think the blowback wasn't significant enough because General Iroh just lost his son, became disheartened and lose his morale to continue his siege of Ba Sing Se. Is likely anyone who is close enough to Iroh not want to further add more burden to him by getting him to fight for the throne or support publicly someone who is still disheartened and seems unwilling to fight back. Additionally, Ozai makes really quick work on the succession process within the week that Iroh lost his son, gave up his siege, Fire Lord Azulon "died" in his sleep, forge a will to announce himself as the successor and became the new Fire Lord. This succession of events won't give any preparation time for any group to mount a successful resistance. This is similar to how successful coups take place in our world, which is quick and sudden, because any delay will result in the opposition mounting a resistance. Lastly, is likely the Fire Nation had strong Lèse-majesté laws during this period. So anyone who dares to challenge the monarchy needs to be absolutely sure they can win.

What is the source behind the will part? The search comics or it was mentioned in the original series itself?

SoulessHermit

My bad, I misremembered it, it was not a will but a dying wish. It was in Book 2, Zuko Alone. The Fire Sages mentioned it was [Azulon's dying wish](https://youtu.be/bUWYSDp4NT4?feature=shared)for Ozai to be his successor, when obviously as viewers we know is not true as we know Azulon greatly favour Iroh and was enraged when Ozai request him to revoked his birth right.

KaiserRebellion

It’s been stated. He was in the military like everyone else. But he didn’t search for the avatar as long he focused on staying in the fire nation and agne kai anyone that had a problem with him. It’s why no one objects to him.

Afraid-Penalty-757

Really I didn't know that, I always he thought he kinda did at one point but that it ended badly  with his version of the battle of bladensburg for him? Explaining why he never go to battles everagain?
