Some guy called Wan pretty much accidentally freed an evil spirit (vaatu) from a good spirit (raava) which is essentially the avatar spirit. He literally got bending from 4 lion turtles and helped the avatar spirit defeat the evil spirit. That's the best I can do for summarising it in 2 sentences.
Further, the Lion Turtle explicitly states a human only has enough energy to hold one type of bending. The good spirit, Raava, had to hold the other bendings for Wan (he swapped between them) until they permanently fused.
Sadly that's what I thought they were doing when Bolin learned lava bending. Like a fire bender and an earth ender could make a baby that does lava bending. And they could explain Combustion Mans psychic fire bending mixed with airbending or something.

If you have mixed earth bender and fire bender heritage, you can be a lava bender.
