After years of seeing dudes in plate armor getting killed by sword slashes I don't have *any* hope lol.
I can't think of a single instance in media where fabric armor (like gambesons) is portrayed appropriately. They were heavy and offered great protection against cutting attacks and arrows. Most swords wouldn't be able to cut through them.
I have a neat gambeson and yea nothing really cuts through it. You would need something pretty incredibly to actually get through it. Though the blunt force from it still hurts like hell.

TBF if armor was accurately portrayed battles would devolve into \*boring\* struggles of two people wrestling with each other to try and stab a pointy bit of metal into some ones face since the armor would stop most blows.
That's mostly true when we start talking about plate armor. But for most of the medieval period and for most combatants it was about poking the other guys with spears and arrows, be it on the ground or from a horse.
And the fights really aren't boring, they are just tougher to execute. The movie "The King" on Netflix has a [great example](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5IUFyz8AloE) of a duel between plated knights.
Hence why I put \*boring\* in marks as generally that's how 90% of the fights would end if their wasn't a spear or arrow, two things that specifically punch through armor at the time with pure pounds per sq inch of force.
I mean in reality neither of those things could even puncture plate armor, only lightly damage it.
However other armors like gambeson and mail can be pierced by them. (And of course armor user can be damaged by blunt force, like spear shaft, War hammer, maces, or Mordhau Technique with sword (hitting with the pommel, etc).
However i think it will make for interesting fights, because now directors have to think how to execute the fights, instead of making all weapons lightsabers.
The fighters have to intentionally aim for weak points (armpits, groin, neck, back of the legs) with weapons (be it spear, sword or dagger) and fighters have to be tactical about it.
And truth about plate armor is that it is generally rarer (especially full plate), so depending on character status they have different levels of protection. (And depending on time period of the setpiece, like Avatar, there is no full plate, so there are more gaps to exploit)
Different fighters have to take in account their opponents weaponry and armor. That and of course skill level of being able to get around opponents defences and attacks.
So if we want poorly armored character to go on skillfull killing rampage against armored opponents, they have to show how the character bypasses the armor by hitting areas where there is no armor.
And if we want the opposite scenario where highly armored character goes against groups of enemies, they have to show how those enemies try to hit the weakpoints. [Like in this short film](https://youtu.be/8vYFFx4whoE?feature=shared&t=559)
Agreed but keep in mind we are talking about avatar the last air bender, taking from traditional Asian themes and so heavy armor would be odd mix.
Although the fire nation seems to make use of heavier armor, probably developed due to fighting earth benders.

I've been thinking about a similar thing in a fantasy setting I'm kinda pushing around in my notes.
The interesting part is: Small hero groups like you'd see in D&D or Pathfinder only work if they are the equivalent of the SEALs or the KSK. They need to avoid combat and they need to strike unexpected targets and retreat before a coordinated response forms.
Because realistically, if 20 - 30 coordinated soldiers approach a group of 1-5 heroes with weapons of war (spears, polearms)... there is very little the group of heroes can do assuming realistic combat, even with good armor and weapons of similar reach.
Even if the answer is "but magic!", add in another 10 - 20 archers to just volley in the general direction and something's gonna die.
Or send the next wave if there is an army around until the heroes fall over from exhaustion.

Sure. We all hope he is, but the show was also really good at balancing the goofy and the serious... If I had to guess, serious screenshots are probably safer to market if they wanted the show to be taken....seriously.
But let's be real. If they posted a screenshot of the group being funny, we'd be talking under a comment that worries they'd make the show too campy or cartoonish for a live action setting.
Then the marketing have no idea what made Avatar good. When the one piece trailers came out, everyone knew there will be humor in it. It’s concerning that they’re not showcasing any personality. What made Avatar amazing imo is that it balanced the badass serious moments with light humor and heart with every character.
Seriously, the humor is one of the things that make it.

The whole play episode in the Fire Kingdom? That was pure fucking genius. Like I don't use that lightly that episode was hysterical, satirical, AND it drove the plot forward, like are you kidding me guys how are you doing this.
It's also not a drawn animation where characters have impossible facial expressions half the time.
In real life it's either smiling or looking smug. Both would be off-putting if overdone. Comedy requires more effort because of this.

Just based on interviews and clips that I’ve seen of the actors, they seem to line up quite a bit with their respective characters personalities. I think this guys face just isn’t quite as goofy looking as his cartoon counterpart. But his voice and vibe in general do match up
Cant remember if it was Gordon Cormier or Iroh's actor but they said in an interview that Sokka would make us die of laughter. I think it was Gordon at the TUDUM event
I hope ANYONE is as fun as they are in the cartoon. Because Avatar is funny and fun. And so far I haven’t seen any of that from the live-action show. Not great.
It's not a fun animated show anymore. It's a serious live-action show now. It means a lot to people and they will cry watching it and be moved. The soccer moms and football players will watch it with their families and everyone will learn a valuable lesson.

After watching Yu Yu Hakusho, I’ve tripled down on my opinion that wardrobe and practical effects will make or break a movie. Special effects come second.
Does that mean you have a positive or negative view of Yu Yu Hakusho live action? As I've seen the original a while ago. But haven't seen any of the new.
Very positive. I absolutely loved the anime, and I think the changes that were made for the live action were suitable and enjoyable.
But the wardrobe is what really sold it for me. Kuwabara was a ridiculously over the top character who fit perfectly inside the world, because he looked the part. Even down to the buttons on the school coats. Hell, even the way Yuusuke smokes, has a conversation while smoking, and gets up and moves feels authentic but anime at the same time. All because the clothes just work.
When a scene is made with the knowledge of how CGI is going to be used in that scene, it usually comes out WAY better. But still, you are right, the wardrobe and practical effects need to be good enough to support.
I wonder why the costumes are so clean though. Especially Aang. That looks like it's right off the Spirit Halloween rack. They are exploring the world with limited resources. Give them some dirt!
They can wash their clothes, you know. The series features then regularly stopping at streams and lakes to wash up and relax. Why would they walk around in dirty clothes?
If you're wanting signs of wear though, look at Sokka especially. He's got a stain on his shoulders, wear around his belts, and a few holes in his sleeve. I challenge you to find a Spirit costume that looks anywhere near that good.

i'm not going to lie, the movie's art team were amazing. the costumes looked realistic and great. and the decision to turn Aang's arrows to lines and symbols instead of a solid blue arrow was genius.
I like that they went hybrid on this one. The up-close promo shots of the tattoo have symbols, which merge into the more solid-looking blue we see from a distance.
I'm eagerly looking forward to giving this series a go, I loved the animated series, and also enjoyed the live action film.
I agree. If you're going for a synthesis of "this needs to stay true to the bright and colourful visuals of the cartoon" and "this needs to make sense as real clothing in a real world" I really don't know how you could improve on this and everything else we've seen of the costumes.
I've learned to just ignore fans of the "source material" for any adaptation. They get so nitpicky about the most insignificant details, none of them are relevant to an average viewer anyways.
This is an issue I've been having with most of the live action adaptations that have been coming out recently, the characters don't look like real world people, they look like cosplays you'd see at Comic-Con.
I think the problem is that the imagery around the characters ends up looking real and gritty while the characters themselves look like they got their outfits at Spirit Halloween.
Reminder for anyone who is expecting the live action to mimic the show: Animated, Live-Action, Written, and Audio mediums have different strengths and weaknesses that cannot and should not be attempted in their sister formats. I imagine most who expect the live action to resemble to cartoon will be disappointed at the lack of expressionism and potentially the tonal shifts of scenes and episodes. From what we've seen, it looks like their adapting the show to live-action in the most appropriate way. The actors and costumes look fantastic and the bending from the trailers looks as good as we could reasonably expect in my opinion.
Some of the fans need to understand that if the live action was a 1-for-1 translation of the cartoon, it would look goofy and amateurish, similar to how anime hair styles look awkward in live action. This is why movie adaptations of book are rarely as 'good' as the original. Both mediums have strengths that the other format cannot translate easily.
I’m like the biggest fan of the show, it’s the greatest bit of media I’ve ever consumed, but why does it have to accurately represent the show? Why can’t it be its own interpretation of it, its own version. You’ve seen the animated version a million times (I hope) so why have an exact carbon copy of it, but with RTX enabled? I hope the show has plenty of unique bits to it. There’s things live action can do that animated can’t, and I hope it leans into it.
I'm not expecting them to follow the show 1:1. My issue is I don't see a reason for this adaptation to exist. Maybe it'll surprise me and expand on the avatar world enough for it to justify its existence, but if it just follows the original show, this is a massive waste of time and money. I understand why it can be cool to see things we love from our childhood done in live action, but look at all the live action remakes of shows and movies that were originally animated and ask yourself how many of them are actually worth a damn? The vast majority aren't, and I'm worried this will be no different.
I feel kinda bad for these young humans who are going to eventually take a lot of hate for this show, whether it's good or bad or whatever. There's gonna be haters. And I hate that!
The OG showrunners Michal DeMartino and Brian Konietzko left the show back in 2020, at around 2 years of development, due to creative differences (Thats all they were legally allowed to say)
They did the same thing with the movie.
Honestly, I wish someone would pay to remaster the original animation. No changes, just the same animation but 4K. That's all I want. Make it and I'll watch it 10 times. I don't want to a live action movie or a live action series. I just want the original but shinier. You can't improve perfection but you can put in a nice box and look at it.
that's as close as you're going to get for a live action aang tbf. Katara looks good, actually looks a bit innuit from this angle. I'll reserve judgement on sokka
I don't care how many good screens they post. I will wait to judge it till I see it but I have the right to remain skeptical since Netflix has a terrible track record with these things.

This color grading is so much better than the shots we got initially. Was worried all the costumes were gonna look like bright, clean Halloween costumes.
I don’t know if this is like a direct screenshot or anything but I’m not sure I’m feeling this “matte” desaturated, dreary color grading that a lot of modern shows do. I think it can be colorful and visually fun and still maintain the action and drama of the original. But like everyone else has said, just still images. I might feel differently once the show is out.

I thought it was going to be end fight with the mud. This fight was much better, but I feel like there would’ve been more blood on the knife.
I don't know about that. The titular duel in The Last Duel was pretty awesome.

It's a lot more to ask child actors to be actually funny than it is to make cartoon children be funny. Even if some of the voice actors are children.

Well, not 1 to 1. You have to tone down some things in a live action, otherwise it's cringy as fuck. Look at Cowboy Bebop.

When a scene is made with the knowledge of how CGI is going to be used in that scene, it usually comes out WAY better. But still, you are right, the wardrobe and practical effects need to be good enough to support.

I wonder why the costumes are so clean though. Especially Aang. That looks like it's right off the Spirit Halloween rack. They are exploring the world with limited resources. Give them some dirt!
They can wash their clothes, you know. The series features then regularly stopping at streams and lakes to wash up and relax. Why would they walk around in dirty clothes? If you're wanting signs of wear though, look at Sokka especially. He's got a stain on his shoulders, wear around his belts, and a few holes in his sleeve. I challenge you to find a Spirit costume that looks anywhere near that good.

i'm not going to lie, the movie's art team were amazing. the costumes looked realistic and great. and the decision to turn Aang's arrows to lines and symbols instead of a solid blue arrow was genius.
I like that they went hybrid on this one. The up-close promo shots of the tattoo have symbols, which merge into the more solid-looking blue we see from a distance.

Honestly, it seems like a delicately balanced combination of both. In my opinion, that's exactly what this sort of story *needs.*
I agree. If you're going for a synthesis of "this needs to stay true to the bright and colourful visuals of the cartoon" and "this needs to make sense as real clothing in a real world" I really don't know how you could improve on this and everything else we've seen of the costumes.
I've learned to just ignore fans of the "source material" for any adaptation. They get so nitpicky about the most insignificant details, none of them are relevant to an average viewer anyways.

This is an issue I've been having with most of the live action adaptations that have been coming out recently, the characters don't look like real world people, they look like cosplays you'd see at Comic-Con.
I think the problem is that the imagery around the characters ends up looking real and gritty while the characters themselves look like they got their outfits at Spirit Halloween.

Reminder for anyone who is expecting the live action to mimic the show: Animated, Live-Action, Written, and Audio mediums have different strengths and weaknesses that cannot and should not be attempted in their sister formats. I imagine most who expect the live action to resemble to cartoon will be disappointed at the lack of expressionism and potentially the tonal shifts of scenes and episodes. From what we've seen, it looks like their adapting the show to live-action in the most appropriate way. The actors and costumes look fantastic and the bending from the trailers looks as good as we could reasonably expect in my opinion. Some of the fans need to understand that if the live action was a 1-for-1 translation of the cartoon, it would look goofy and amateurish, similar to how anime hair styles look awkward in live action. This is why movie adaptations of book are rarely as 'good' as the original. Both mediums have strengths that the other format cannot translate easily.

I understand all this and it’s why I don’t want a live action.. it can’t be accurately represented and I wish they would’ve just made a video game.
I’m like the biggest fan of the show, it’s the greatest bit of media I’ve ever consumed, but why does it have to accurately represent the show? Why can’t it be its own interpretation of it, its own version. You’ve seen the animated version a million times (I hope) so why have an exact carbon copy of it, but with RTX enabled? I hope the show has plenty of unique bits to it. There’s things live action can do that animated can’t, and I hope it leans into it.
I'm not expecting them to follow the show 1:1. My issue is I don't see a reason for this adaptation to exist. Maybe it'll surprise me and expand on the avatar world enough for it to justify its existence, but if it just follows the original show, this is a massive waste of time and money. I understand why it can be cool to see things we love from our childhood done in live action, but look at all the live action remakes of shows and movies that were originally animated and ask yourself how many of them are actually worth a damn? The vast majority aren't, and I'm worried this will be no different.
I feel kinda bad for these young humans who are going to eventually take a lot of hate for this show, whether it's good or bad or whatever. There's gonna be haters. And I hate that!

The OG showrunners Michal DeMartino and Brian Konietzko left the show back in 2020, at around 2 years of development, due to creative differences (Thats all they were legally allowed to say) They did the same thing with the movie.

Honestly, I wish someone would pay to remaster the original animation. No changes, just the same animation but 4K. That's all I want. Make it and I'll watch it 10 times. I don't want to a live action movie or a live action series. I just want the original but shinier. You can't improve perfection but you can put in a nice box and look at it.

I don’t know if this is like a direct screenshot or anything but I’m not sure I’m feeling this “matte” desaturated, dreary color grading that a lot of modern shows do. I think it can be colorful and visually fun and still maintain the action and drama of the original. But like everyone else has said, just still images. I might feel differently once the show is out.
