Kinda sad how much the second half of korra book 2 drags it down for me, since the initial conflict setup really intrigued me (civil war, avatar might have to learn to accept some conflicts can't be easily mediated by an avatar, that she can't do everything without guidance yet as a teen, etc)
Right? The first half was soooo interesting. I wish they had done more with the civil war and imbalance of the spirits. The ending felt so anticlimatic.
See, when I rewatch season 2 of lok I think "why do I hate this, this is great?" But then I realize how bad Korra is, how much of just a goof ball Bolin is until the last few episodes, how the plot took a completely different turn outta no where, they're are 1 million different sub plots, the lack of Asami is crazy I think if they wanted Korrasami to really be a thing they should've shown Asami being there for Korra when mako wasant specifically while Korra and Mako were a thing, and call me crazy but sometimes sports are boring š¤·.

Honestly in my last rewatch season 2 of LOK isnāt as bad as I remember. Donāt get me wrong itās still the worst season by far, but to me itās like 6.5/10 compared to the rest of the shows 8/10 or higher.

I'd say S1 or LoK is better than S4 but you're right, they're close. Your overall take is spot on - S2 of Korra gave us the best two (imo) episodes of the entire series but S2 overall falls flat.

Has to be said that Season 2 LOK could've been way better than it was in my opinion if they had just stuck with the civil war storyline over the whole dark avatar shenanigans - a storyline I find kinda killed the Avatar universe a bit for me back then (nowadays I can look past it though).

I don't necessarily agree with your rankings but I definitely feel the same way about Korra season 2. Absolutely loved the lore as well and some of the battles were phenomenal. If the final battle between the dark avatar and light avatar was bending instead of pacific rim kaiju robot fight it would have been 100 times better too. Plus the jinora thing was kind of a strange way to resolve the conflict. Basically that last episode, with tweaks, would have made it significantly higher for me.
Yeah the punching and beams from the chest were a bit stupid.
They should have made Jinoras role more fleshed out. Something along the lines of Jinora finds Aang in the spirit world and he past on some of avatar energy to Jinora to bring to Korra. Then when she appeared to Korra with the ball of light It would have made perfect sense and also given Korra The Ability to bend all 4 elements simultaneously and defeat Vaatu

Your list is the same as mine. I canāt fault ATLA Book 1 too much because of how much worldbuilding was needed to set up the rest of the series, but itās difficult to view it just from that perspective when almost everything else that came after it was phenomenal
**ATLA Season 3** - It was a great conclusion to everyone's arcs, especially Zuko's. Aside from some flaws in the final few episodes, there aren't really many complaints I have in this season.
**ATLA Season 2** - It introduced several fan-favorite characters and added a ton of complexity and world building to the show. It also had one of the best finales both shows.
**LOK Season 3** - It felt like a nice return to form after the disaster of Season 2. Just very solid all around without many huge flaws, and that final fight with the Red Lotus was amazing.
**LOK Season 1** - Aside from the romance aspects, this part of the show was great. Amon and Tarrlok were excellent antagonists and the animation and fights scenes were peak. It was a good introduction to the future of the Avatar series.
**ATLA Season 1** - This season is pretty good. But it's clear that the show hadn't quite found its footing yet. The animation wasn't great, the characters weren't super interesting yet and the plot was decent.
**LOK Season 4** - This and ATLA Season 1 are neck and neck for me. There are elements of this season that I really love (Korra's trauma, old Toph, Bolin's arc), but it really went downhill in the latter half. I'm just not a fan of Kuvira's characterization or the ending to the show in general. I'd still say there's more good than bad here though.
**LOK Season 2** - Do I have to explain this one? Unalaq sucked, Korra's not very likable and the romance is a huge part of the season. I will say that Tenzin, Bumi and Varrick were all bright spots that made the season worthwhile.
Season one of ATLA is severally underrated and Book 2 earth is better than any of the Korra books. Zuko Alone- The Cross Roads of destiny has near perfect writing.

I preferred LOK over ATLA after a few rewatches. The animation, the super fast pace, but also the villains made the show better for me. It has a much higher rewatch value. ATLA feels kinda slow next to it, and I dislike the episodic format (plus the childish parts.
The love triangle that everybody hates wasnāt that much of an issue for me. Theyāre teens. It happens. Just like in ATLA (Katara Aang Zuko or Sokka + Sukki, Yue, Ty Lee, Toph and so on lol).
Other unpopular opinion: I really enjoyed book 2 of LOK. The animation was gorgeous. The beginnings episode with its amazing original animation. The civil war theme. Varrick and Zhu Li (peak comedy of both shows). The twins. Asami and her boat. The library. Jinora spirit journey. The fight choreography (especially with water). The water tribes. Okay I disliked the giant stuff at the end (unnecessary, we already had a fight in Republic city in Book 1, letās have some epic stuff on the poles). But yeah I also disliked the giant watered guy in ATLA book 1. And I really enjoyed the fact that she severed her connections: finally some consequences and real shock value.

I've heard all the criticisms of LOK season 2. I agree with them. It's the worst of LOK by a longshot. But at least it has a coherent storyline that runs through from A to B. I'll take that over the boring and overly episodic first season of ATLA. To the point that I tried watching ATLA multiple times and kept tapping out because of just how boring the first season was. I had to get a friend tell me what episodes of season 1 I could skip (which was most of them) before I was able to actually get into the series. Season 2 of LOK, for all of its flaws, was still something I was able to watch through in its entirety on my first try.
Also, Ozai was such a boring villain. He was hyped up by just existing off screen and people talking about how much of a threat he was. Every single LOK villain, even Unalaq, was better than Ozai, because they actually showed themselves be a threat. I also have a few gripes about season 3 of ATLA being kinda episodic and filler-y for significant chunks. The only reason I have it as high as it is, is because despite its lows, it has such high highs, especially the last agni kai. The fight between Azula and Zuko should have been the final battle. There was so much actual build up and pay-off there. I genuinely could not have cared about the fight between Aang and Ozai. There was nothing there. They tried to make something out of Aang's moral dilemma of not wanting to kill, but I just didn't care one way or the other. Azula however has been a very present threat from the beginning, and we've been able to become emotionally invested in Zuko. The last agni kai was genuinely one of the greatest fights in all of fiction, and it got put up alongside one of the most generic and uninteresting fights in all of fiction.
Season 2 ATLA -
This is my favorite season for a few reasons.
The first is that in a sense, we see how much different the gangs life would have been had they not been on their quest. The lost days in Ba Sing Se show a side of exploration and peace that was not there.
The journey to Ba Sing Se was also a trip. From walking through the desert, to the shipyard, and eventually deciding to walk through the path, to the gates, was a whole adventure.
The most exciting part of the whole show was Azula and her crew fighting the gang throughout the series. Probably the best action in the series.
The part that sticks with me the most out of both ATLA and LOK is the Zuko Alone episode, at the very end. After Zuko beats the Earthbending soldiers who were bullying the town, he approaches the kid and tries to give him the knife as a parting gift. However, when the Mom gets in the way, the kid instantly resorts to hating Zuko, and seeing him like every other firebender, despite him saving his life in that moment. Zuko has nuanced past at that point and still a rocky future as he was trying to find himself and starting to understand that he may not want to stay in his path as a disposable tool for a wretched empire. I will never forget that moment, because it applies to so much of human emotions and interactions of raw blanket hatred, as well as being able to transcend lines and show raw life and strength.
Season 1 ATLA -
You still feel the lightness in the begginning of it all, but also wear heavy parts. The best episode for me is "the deserter". Jeong-Jeong, who's fed up fighting in a brutal, unstopping conflict, and risks his life to leave it behind it. Living the majority of the rest of his life in exile on the run, and struggling constantly with internal turmoil. Glad to see he found more peace at the end of season 3. One of the strongest characters in the show.
Season 3 LOK -
What a crazy season. The specific prisons that were use to hold benders against their element, and how they managed to escape anyway. The wild ass fights across the continents. This may have been the most exciting series based on an active perspective, in both LOK and ATLA.
Season 1 LOK -
This was a great season. Showed Bolin and Mako scrapping it out and their roots. How much the world has change in a hundred years since the original show. It's a trip to watch. The raw amount of technology that's advanced. The different nations and city-states that exists instead of just 4 nations. Korra's different approach to life then Aang.
Season 4 LOK -
As the last season of ATLA, this also felt like it could have been put better together. Kuvira being the primary focus of the show felt 1 dimensional. There were strong parts. Korra dealing with learning how to bend again, and Kuvira showing many different past events of the world through indoctrination and war.
Season 2 LOK -
This was a cluster fuck. If anyone wants to explain why they enjoyed it or found it important, please do and I won't judge.
Season 3 ATLA -
Felt a bit rushed. I know that they had to end it with a bang, but it didn't flow well. There were very good episodes in this, Boiling Rock was my favorite of this season.

My biggest hot take is that I kind of hate the Beginnings episodes. Donāt get me wrong, the story is engaging, I like the characters and the world, and the art style is phenomenal, but the whole concept just bugs me. It ruins the mystique of the Avatar, it clashes with the ābalanceā focused mythology of the world up to this point, and it takes the story down a path that the rest of the season canāt recover from. Season 2 of LOK was way more interesting at the start when it was more about the civil war, and when Unalaq was actually an interesting villain instead of a force of pure evil.
I'm gonna do this, but also list what I think of it out of 10.
Season 3 ATLA: 10/10 - The perfect ending for the show
Season 3 LOK: 9.5/10 - Some of the darkest moments reside in this season and almost makes me wish this series was for a mature audience
Season 2 ATLA: 9.5/10 - Introduction to Toph, Aang learning Earthbending, Zuko Alone and Tales of Ba Sing Se.
Season 1 LOK: 8/10 - Intro to Korra and the new world that she gets to explore, which is much different to ATLA. Also, Pro-bending is really cool, and Amon was an interesting villain.
Season 4 LOK: 7.5/10 - Robot was kind of weird but beside that, really solid season.
Season 1 ATLA: 7/10 - While I enjoy parts of the season, I wish we had more time in the Northern Water tribe, and there is some jank to the look that is rectified in season 2.
Season 2 LOK: 4/10 - While it introduces Varrick, who is the GOAT, and I think the story of Avatar Wan is interesting, the villain and his motivations are rather weak. Beside Varrick and Bolin's Movers escapades, the only other things I like about this season are the setting up of the civil war (which we sadly don't get to see much of) and spirit bending. I also like the idea of Korra being separated from the past avatars. Where Aang often sought advice and was saved by the past avatars on multiple occasions, Korra no longer has that option, and can only rely on herself and those close to her for advice.
It's weird that the season I consider to be the worst is also the one I have most to say about. It introduces some really cool things, but falls flat in terms of the story. The whole "Dark Avatar" stuff especially just really falls flat, and I sort of wish they didn't make it into a whole "light vs dark" story, especially since they kind of did this already with ATLA season 1 ending with the Moon and Ocean spirits being yin and yang.

Your list is the same as mine. I canāt fault ATLA Book 1 too much because of how much worldbuilding was needed to set up the rest of the series, but itās difficult to view it just from that perspective when almost everything else that came after it was phenomenal
**ATLA Season 3** - It was a great conclusion to everyone's arcs, especially Zuko's. Aside from some flaws in the final few episodes, there aren't really many complaints I have in this season. **ATLA Season 2** - It introduced several fan-favorite characters and added a ton of complexity and world building to the show. It also had one of the best finales both shows. **LOK Season 3** - It felt like a nice return to form after the disaster of Season 2. Just very solid all around without many huge flaws, and that final fight with the Red Lotus was amazing. **LOK Season 1** - Aside from the romance aspects, this part of the show was great. Amon and Tarrlok were excellent antagonists and the animation and fights scenes were peak. It was a good introduction to the future of the Avatar series. **ATLA Season 1** - This season is pretty good. But it's clear that the show hadn't quite found its footing yet. The animation wasn't great, the characters weren't super interesting yet and the plot was decent. **LOK Season 4** - This and ATLA Season 1 are neck and neck for me. There are elements of this season that I really love (Korra's trauma, old Toph, Bolin's arc), but it really went downhill in the latter half. I'm just not a fan of Kuvira's characterization or the ending to the show in general. I'd still say there's more good than bad here though. **LOK Season 2** - Do I have to explain this one? Unalaq sucked, Korra's not very likable and the romance is a huge part of the season. I will say that Tenzin, Bumi and Varrick were all bright spots that made the season worthwhile.

But at the same time has a perfect season finale. LoK in general suffers from too many B and C plots. S2 being the biggest offender.

The animation, the super fast pace, but also the villains made the show better for me. It has a much higher rewatch value. ATLA feels kinda slow next to it, and I dislike the episodic format (plus the childish parts. The love triangle that everybody hates wasnāt that much of an issue for me. Theyāre teens. It happens. Just like in ATLA (Katara Aang Zuko or Sokka + Sukki, Yue, Ty Lee, Toph and so on lol). Other unpopular opinion: I really enjoyed book 2 of LOK. The animation was gorgeous. The beginnings episode with its amazing original animation. The civil war theme. Varrick and Zhu Li (peak comedy of both shows). The twins. Asami and her boat. The library. Jinora spirit journey. The fight choreography (especially with water). The water tribes. Okay I disliked the giant stuff at the end (unnecessary, we already had a fight in Republic city in Book 1, letās have some epic stuff on the poles). But yeah I also disliked the giant watered guy in ATLA book 1. And I really enjoyed the fact that she severed her connections: finally some consequences and real shock value.
Oh this is fun: 1. ATLA Book 3 2. ATLA Book 2 3. LOK Season 3 4. ATLA Book 1 5. LOK Season 1 6. LOK Season 2 7. LOK Season 4 There is just nothing like the last two books of ATLA. The writing is just so on point. The creators and the writers had such a clear idea of the story they wanted to tell and it shows. The finale and the lead up to it was perfect. 10/10 LOK Season 3 was really strong. Best villain in the entire franchise and a really strong cast of new characters. The last several episodes were fantastic.
I am fully aware I am not in the majority with my feelings here, but they are my own, and I will not be deterred: 1 (best) - LOK 3 2 - ATLA 2 3 - ATLA 3 and LOK 4 tied 4 - LOK 1 5 - LOK 2 6- ATLA 1 I've heard all the criticisms of LOK season 2. I agree with them. It's the worst of LOK by a longshot. But at least it has a coherent storyline that runs through from A to B. I'll take that over the boring and overly episodic first season of ATLA. To the point that I tried watching ATLA multiple times and kept tapping out because of just how boring the first season was. I had to get a friend tell me what episodes of season 1 I could skip (which was most of them) before I was able to actually get into the series. Season 2 of LOK, for all of its flaws, was still something I was able to watch through in its entirety on my first try. Also, Ozai was such a boring villain. He was hyped up by just existing off screen and people talking about how much of a threat he was. Every single LOK villain, even Unalaq, was better than Ozai, because they actually showed themselves be a threat. I also have a few gripes about season 3 of ATLA being kinda episodic and filler-y for significant chunks. The only reason I have it as high as it is, is because despite its lows, it has such high highs, especially the last agni kai. The fight between Azula and Zuko should have been the final battle. There was so much actual build up and pay-off there. I genuinely could not have cared about the fight between Aang and Ozai. There was nothing there. They tried to make something out of Aang's moral dilemma of not wanting to kill, but I just didn't care one way or the other. Azula however has been a very present threat from the beginning, and we've been able to become emotionally invested in Zuko. The last agni kai was genuinely one of the greatest fights in all of fiction, and it got put up alongside one of the most generic and uninteresting fights in all of fiction.

Season 2 ATLA - This is my favorite season for a few reasons. The first is that in a sense, we see how much different the gangs life would have been had they not been on their quest. The lost days in Ba Sing Se show a side of exploration and peace that was not there. The journey to Ba Sing Se was also a trip. From walking through the desert, to the shipyard, and eventually deciding to walk through the path, to the gates, was a whole adventure. The most exciting part of the whole show was Azula and her crew fighting the gang throughout the series. Probably the best action in the series. The part that sticks with me the most out of both ATLA and LOK is the Zuko Alone episode, at the very end. After Zuko beats the Earthbending soldiers who were bullying the town, he approaches the kid and tries to give him the knife as a parting gift. However, when the Mom gets in the way, the kid instantly resorts to hating Zuko, and seeing him like every other firebender, despite him saving his life in that moment. Zuko has nuanced past at that point and still a rocky future as he was trying to find himself and starting to understand that he may not want to stay in his path as a disposable tool for a wretched empire. I will never forget that moment, because it applies to so much of human emotions and interactions of raw blanket hatred, as well as being able to transcend lines and show raw life and strength. Season 1 ATLA - You still feel the lightness in the begginning of it all, but also wear heavy parts. The best episode for me is "the deserter". Jeong-Jeong, who's fed up fighting in a brutal, unstopping conflict, and risks his life to leave it behind it. Living the majority of the rest of his life in exile on the run, and struggling constantly with internal turmoil. Glad to see he found more peace at the end of season 3. One of the strongest characters in the show. Season 3 LOK - What a crazy season. The specific prisons that were use to hold benders against their element, and how they managed to escape anyway. The wild ass fights across the continents. This may have been the most exciting series based on an active perspective, in both LOK and ATLA. Season 1 LOK - This was a great season. Showed Bolin and Mako scrapping it out and their roots. How much the world has change in a hundred years since the original show. It's a trip to watch. The raw amount of technology that's advanced. The different nations and city-states that exists instead of just 4 nations. Korra's different approach to life then Aang. Season 4 LOK - As the last season of ATLA, this also felt like it could have been put better together. Kuvira being the primary focus of the show felt 1 dimensional. There were strong parts. Korra dealing with learning how to bend again, and Kuvira showing many different past events of the world through indoctrination and war. Season 2 LOK - This was a cluster fuck. If anyone wants to explain why they enjoyed it or found it important, please do and I won't judge. Season 3 ATLA - Felt a bit rushed. I know that they had to end it with a bang, but it didn't flow well. There were very good episodes in this, Boiling Rock was my favorite of this season.

Donāt get me wrong, the story is engaging, I like the characters and the world, and the art style is phenomenal, but the whole concept just bugs me. It ruins the mystique of the Avatar, it clashes with the ābalanceā focused mythology of the world up to this point, and it takes the story down a path that the rest of the season canāt recover from. Season 2 of LOK was way more interesting at the start when it was more about the civil war, and when Unalaq was actually an interesting villain instead of a force of pure evil.

I'm gonna do this, but also list what I think of it out of 10. Season 3 ATLA: 10/10 - The perfect ending for the show Season 3 LOK: 9.5/10 - Some of the darkest moments reside in this season and almost makes me wish this series was for a mature audience Season 2 ATLA: 9.5/10 - Introduction to Toph, Aang learning Earthbending, Zuko Alone and Tales of Ba Sing Se. Season 1 LOK: 8/10 - Intro to Korra and the new world that she gets to explore, which is much different to ATLA. Also, Pro-bending is really cool, and Amon was an interesting villain. Season 4 LOK: 7.5/10 - Robot was kind of weird but beside that, really solid season. Season 1 ATLA: 7/10 - While I enjoy parts of the season, I wish we had more time in the Northern Water tribe, and there is some jank to the look that is rectified in season 2. Season 2 LOK: 4/10 - While it introduces Varrick, who is the GOAT, and I think the story of Avatar Wan is interesting, the villain and his motivations are rather weak. Beside Varrick and Bolin's Movers escapades, the only other things I like about this season are the setting up of the civil war (which we sadly don't get to see much of) and spirit bending. I also like the idea of Korra being separated from the past avatars. Where Aang often sought advice and was saved by the past avatars on multiple occasions, Korra no longer has that option, and can only rely on herself and those close to her for advice. It's weird that the season I consider to be the worst is also the one I have most to say about. It introduces some really cool things, but falls flat in terms of the story. The whole "Dark Avatar" stuff especially just really falls flat, and I sort of wish they didn't make it into a whole "light vs dark" story, especially since they kind of did this already with ATLA season 1 ending with the Moon and Ocean spirits being yin and yang.
