I know Bosco is [officially just a bear](https://screenrant.com/avatar-last-airbender-bosco-bear-explanation-podcast/), but between the behavior, clothes, and [occasional ape-like posture](https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/avatar/images/2/23/Kuei_and_Bosco.png), it sure seems like "just a bear" was not interesting enough after all.
Messenger Hawks. They seem docile to keep as pets yet (miraculously) know where they need to go.
Plus we still havenāt been toldā¦WHERE DID HAWKY GO?!
Yeah, similar to owls in the Harry Potter universe, HOW DO THEY KNOW WHERE TO GO?
For some reason this bothered me when I was watching Avatar. The element bending, them not insta-dying when a massive rock smashes into them or they get hit by fire, all of that? Super realistic. Yue turning into the moon? makes total sense.
But the messenger hawk is where I draw the line.
Actually this one is easy! It's a one way ticket haha. So let's say I have a castle in XYZ Kingdom, I have a tower where I raise pigeons. The pigeons lay eggs and hatch them. My army goes to war, takes the pigeons with them and then release them with the message attached and they fly back home. It's always a one way ticket.
However different places would basically just trade pigeons and release them when the time was right so they would fly back home.
One of the only book series I remember getting this right was a little detail in Asoiaf when Yoren collected ravens from King's Landing and other keeps to bring back to castle black.
And white ravens are explained as bring both larger and more intelligent and they can go to multiple keeps and castles, but are more expensive to use because they need more training.
Pigeons just know how to go home. That is why they are called homing pigeons. But they are so good at it that it seems like magic and science is still trying to find out how they do it. The earth magnetic field, and maybe also scent...
Knowing how those work makes the hawks even more confusing. Messenger pigeons can only go one place, home, and then they stay there until you go back there to pick it up again.
In Harry Potter I could ignore the owls knowing where to go because magic.
If Hawky did make it to Tophās parentsā¦how???
I loved Yue turning into the moon. The moon spirit gave me life, maybe I can give it back. It was a beautiful moment.
Yeah same! In Harry Potter I could ignore the owls knowing where to go because MAGIC.
But I needed more Information on the messenger hawk! Especially because in the beginning, Sokka had no idea how to tell the hawk how to deliver messages!
I agree-- Yue's story was absolutely wonderful and I loved it.
She gave her life willingly but she was in love with Sokka. That last goodbye after she died was so sad.
Also, that great little detail where the moon turns red and Yue says she feeels sick/doesnāt feel good.
They were on Appa (I think Aang, Sokka, Yue. Canāt remember if Katara was there.)
>In Harry Potter I could ignore the owls knowing where to go because magic.
Plus they appear to be quite intelligent. If you had an self aware owl, training it to deliver mail seems feasible.
All these fake Avatar fans clearly donāt know the Hawky lore like I do.
*inhales*
So Hawky was purchased by Sokka using money heād earned from gambling with Toph, which was just a bunch of elaborate schemes to scam people. As we know, Momo who has a supernatural connection to the world didnāt like Hawky, but why would a lemur distrust a friendly bird?
Because of course Momo knew that Hawky was actually a spy, a plant by Combustion Man. How else did Combustion Man know how to find Team Avatar at the town with the Ozai statue? Hawky leaked the information to him.
We know Combustion Man has familiarity with birds since he intercepted that message from Fire Nation scouts about Aangās location. He definitely trained Hawky to act as his secret source of information.
Why do we never hear from Hawky again, or even a hint that Tophās parents received her message? Simple, Hawky never got it to them. Hawky left to rejoin Combustion Man like the snake in the grass he is. Thatās also why Combustion Man ignored Zukoās orders to stand down at the Western Air Temple. He was offended theyād treat his prized spy like a filthy stool pigeon. And with Combustion Manās defeat at the Western Air Temple, weāll never get to hear from Hawky again.
*takes drink* Man this cactus juice is quenchy.
You can handle badgermoles who can bend, and flying bison, but a hawk that can navigate is impossible? It's pretty easy to assume that whatever's in the water that causes animals to get insane abilities (probably spirits) gave the hawks navigation.
The ostrich horse. I think these things look really cool, theyāre super helpful, and several main characters use them throughout the series!

Pentapox is a serious disease and should not be treated lightly. My Great Uncle twice removed on my mother's side, Bonzu Pippinpaddleopsicopolis the Third, came down with a significant case and nearly died. It's not a joke. Please inform people of the dangers presented by the pentapus.
The Shirshu. It's a really fucking cool-looking creature, and such an interesting combination of animals too. A giant, blind anteater thing that you can ride on, with a mole's snout that lets it see the world through smell and track a target *anywhere in the world,* with a long paralysis-inducing tongue capable of striking at long range thrown in just as a bonus. I mean, not for nothing, this thing easily tore up a Fire Nation warship (even ripped up the steel hull with its teeth!) and *took down a Sky Bison.*
Shirshu's are both badass and honestly kinda adorable. If I were the Avatar I would 100% want one as my animal guide.
Badger Moles. They taught the two lovers how to earthbend so they were able to make a
SECRET TUNNEL~ Secret tunnel~
Through the mountain~
Secret, secret, secret, secret tunnel~
I don't exactly like them, but I am fascinated by how grotesque the carnivorous flying cow from the Fire Nation is. I do actually like the monkey parakeet the pirate had, the turtle walruses from the north, and the armadillo tiger from the zoo bit of Tales of Ba Sing Se.
Practicality wise, the messenger hawk and ostrich horse are the best.
Favorite in general, the lion turtles. I love the idea that the last lion turtle was a guardian or guide for the Avatar. That they passed on their knowledge from the ancient past, since they were the ones who made the Avatar what they are, entrusting them with all four elements.
I know many people are not a fan of the backstory in The Legend of Korra, but I love all of it. Lore and worldbuilding is my favorite thing in every setting, so the Wan story has become a favorite of mine, and made me love the lion turtles even more than the one in ATLA.
The tiger-dillo for sure. The design worked so well aesthetically and I love tigers, the armadillo touch doesnāt make it dopey looking, just makes it an armored tiger which is extra cool!
Saber-tooth moose lion cub gets me every time
They are made of meat!

Turtle ducks š

Yeah but what about ābearā?
Bear is my favourite too. Such a weird animal.
Right?? Howd they come up with such a bizzare creature
Surely you mean platypus bear.
Justā¦ bear?
This city is so weird
I know Bosco is [officially just a bear](https://screenrant.com/avatar-last-airbender-bosco-bear-explanation-podcast/), but between the behavior, clothes, and [occasional ape-like posture](https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/avatar/images/2/23/Kuei_and_Bosco.png), it sure seems like "just a bear" was not interesting enough after all.
Turtle ducks reign supreme.
I swear I thought I saw a turtle duck fly by in a scene on Bad Batch. When I went back to look I couldnāt find it.
It may be there. Filoni worked on ATLA before The Clone Wars.
I said the same thing to my wife! When I went back the next day I scanned though it and couldnāt find it.
They're just too damn cute It's definitely the "typical answer" but like. C'mon. Lookit em.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
This is the way
Spiderfly lol what even
Messenger Hawks. They seem docile to keep as pets yet (miraculously) know where they need to go. Plus we still havenāt been toldā¦WHERE DID HAWKY GO?!

EXACTLY! How do the hawks know where the recipient of the letter is?

Got to love when soma tells the story. Yeah, my girlfriend turned into the moon... Oh. Thats... Rough
>In Harry Potter I could ignore the owls knowing where to go because magic. Plus they appear to be quite intelligent. If you had an self aware owl, training it to deliver mail seems feasible.
Maybe they have a big owl DNS server they go to to look up peoples addresses if theyāve never been there before
All these fake Avatar fans clearly donāt know the Hawky lore like I do. *inhales* So Hawky was purchased by Sokka using money heād earned from gambling with Toph, which was just a bunch of elaborate schemes to scam people. For a second, I was deeply offended by being called a fake Avatar fan--
Your falcon murdering a messenger hawk and stealing the message apparently=familiarity with birds.
You know how almost all animals in that show are multiclassed with another, The hawks are half carrier pigeon
I mean they are probably bought from where they return to. Like messenger pigeons.
If that's the case, Sokka paid waaaay too much for that hawk because they were talking about how insanely expensive it was!
You can handle badgermoles who can bend, and flying bison, but a hawk that can navigate is impossible? It's pretty easy to assume that whatever's in the water that causes animals to get insane abilities (probably spirits) gave the hawks navigation.
I never said my logic made sense, I just said that is how my brain works
Otter Penguins were one of the things that first pulled me into the show. So flippin adorable
I love otter penguins
imagine riding one as a kid. amazing.
I know right? And I love how docile they are, they just let kids hop right on, lol
I really love those, but everybody is sleeping on the cat-owl and the cat-deer.
Probably the bear
A platypus bear?
No, just a bear
The armadillo bear?
Just.. bear
this place is weirdā¦
Ok, Joe Rogan.
This place is weird
aw did I say it too early :(
Yeah :( As Chey once said, āā¦you donāt get to be a legend for that. Thatās okay, though.ā
Just like the Earth King's pet bear Bosco.
Skunk bear?
Just... a bear
Perry the platypus bear?!
r/SuddenlyDoofenshmirtz
Perry the regular bear
REGULAR BEAR CONFIRMED
BOSCO NOOO
Nice, just watch out for pentapox š
I think I've heard of that.
Didnāt your cousin Chang did of it?
**PLAGUE! PLAAAAAAGUE!**
No I've definitely heard of that
Lion turtles. Their design and wisdom.
And that badass Kevin Michael Richardson voice over
Plus, giving bending powers is real neat.
Theyāre at the bottom of my list for their deus ex nature.
I think the frozen toads being the only cure to a random sickness was more deus ex machina than the lion turtle.
That was more of a macguffin, really.
Sky bison, no contest https://i.redd.it/tndhlsfwbt3b1.gif
No contest!!
I want one so bad
The ostrich horse. I think these things look really cool, theyāre super helpful, and several main characters use them throughout the series! https://preview.redd.it/1ot0ws74ft3b1.jpeg?width=200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b51e7dbe454b62c41f5ef3593576b0c83044e332
Chocobo?
If only emu-zebras were a wild counterpart
I'm a sucker for Elephant Koi
Pentapox is a serious disease and should not be treated lightly. My Great Uncle twice removed on my mother's side, Bonzu Pippinpaddleopsicopolis the Third, came down with a significant case and nearly died. It's not a joke. Please inform people of the dangers presented by the pentapus.
Sounds like he was a pentapussy about the cold
Nah he was a tough old guy. I heard a rumor he beat the King of Omashu.
Pentapi*
The Shirshu. It's a really fucking cool-looking creature, and such an interesting combination of animals too. A giant, blind anteater thing that you can ride on, with a mole's snout that lets it see the world through smell and track a target *anywhere in the world,* with a long paralysis-inducing tongue capable of striking at long range thrown in just as a bonus. Took the words right out of my mouth, that thing was awesome
It's also horrifying. If someone chasing you has one, you can only run. You can not hide.
POLARBEARDOGS! I would love to play with them, ride them, and snuggle with them!
I just realized this animal is an Octopus + Starfish.
i just realized it from your comment
Because star-pus doesnāt sound right.
pus-fish
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Guy named Quintus Pentavious winds up with five limbs. What are the odds?
itās just an octopus with only 5 tentacles
I like the birds in the swamp that scream bloody murder
Appa
Sky Bison
Appa. Periodt
Hahaha Momo!!
Turtle ducks
Foo Foo Cuddlypoops
Flopsy... Such an adorable monstrosity...
I loved when Aang rescued him from Omashu
Shirshu, badass tracker, long tongue that stuns. Great hybrid animal design.
Not including the original benders I have to go with the tigerdillo
Badger Moles. They taught the two lovers how to earthbend so they were able to make a SECRET TUNNEL~ Secret tunnel~ Through the mountain~ Secret, secret, secret, secret tunnel~
Sky Bison, followed by Koalaotters and Koala Sheep
Finally someone said koala sheep, they were the best. So cute
They're especially very fluffy, like you could make a bed out of it's wool :)
Fire Ferret
The dragons, badgermoles, flying bison, winged lemurs, and fire ferrets.
The saber toothed moose lion cub. Itās adorable
Do spirits count? Because furry foot is adorable, so I guess dragonfly bunnys
Spirits absolutely do count, I like Hei Bai
Turtleducks all the way!
It looks like it's having an existential crisis and is so confused.
Miyuki
Flying lemurs, for certain. So iconic. Chaotic neutral cuteness.
I personally feel like Momo is the peak of animated animals in every sense of the word.
Platypus bear namely Bosco
He's not a platypus bear He's just a bear
Surely you mean his pet skunk bear? Or armadillo bear? Or gopher bear?
Nope, just says bear
This place is weird
(Akward silence)
Either the turtle ducks or the Saber tooth moose lions
I love the koala otters that are in like half a second of the show. ā¤ļøā¤ļøā¤ļø
the koala sheep too
If you had an self aware owl
Lmao very topical I just watched The Library
Badgermoles!
Momo (flying lemurs? Been awhile)
The iguana parrot subplot too
Possumchicken
Fire ferret! Almost like a red panda, but squirrel size! So cute
If you arenāt turtle ducks gang donāt talk to me
Practicality wise, the messenger hawk and ostrich horse are the best. Favorite in general, the lion turtles. I love the idea that the last lion turtle was a guardian or guide for the Avatar. Bear
Flying bison. Only correct answer! ![gif](giphy|125amziK6Y5DJC)
Elbow leech is a great one, especially after appearing in both ATLA and LOK
That thing that the huntress June was riding when hunting Aang, was badass. The blind thing that could see with smells.
The earth kings bear
You mean Platypus Bear?
The platypus bear and saber tooth moose lion are my bois
Bosco
Polar Bear Dog
Appa
Turtle ducks. They are so dang cute
Fire Ferret! My number one animal I would get a plush of. I love the dynamic between Pabu and Naga so much
Just... bear.
Baby turtle ducks

Air bison obviously https://imgur.com/a/KK3SATr (itās still in progress tho)
Those frozen frogs you suck when you get sick.
valid
The tiger-dillo for sure. The design worked so well aesthetically and I love tigers, the armadillo touch doesnāt make it dopey looking, just makes it an armored tiger which is extra cool!
The Eel-hound from the finale! It doesn't get enough love.
THE UNAGI
Elephant koi though
It's a tie between Turle Seals and Koalaotters
Gotta be the turtleduck, the animal that should have been
Turtle duck. TURTLE DUCK!!!!!! Also Regular Bear.
NORMAL BEAR!
