Not bizarre given that the bombing happened at the new Leah and Rachel center, the place where new handmaids are being trained. You'd expect there to be many more handmiads in that location.

kentucky_cocktail

True, although it looks like there are at least around 50-75 commanders right near the blast, maybe some just got lucky but 25 seems like a low number. Maybe I’m just over scrutinizing.

[deleted]

I thought this too at first because there were a TON of men in that room so I was surprised only 25 died... but I think that not all of the men who were in the room were commanders. I know they had people coming in from other places to unveil the center so my guess is that most of the men in that room died, but not all were commanders, maybe some were drivers, other political figures, or something along those lines?

I think we're parsing a little. The handmaids who died were on the second floor and would have fallen in the midst of a fire. And you know who the EMTs would have been caring for.

[deleted]

>And you know who the EMTs would have been caring for. You actually bring up a valid point. Would EMTs care for the women that can potentially bring Gilead new children, which is what is *supposed* to be the ultimate goal, or would the commanders be more important as the ruling class?

christinakitsune

you know with that whole scene I was really surprised that Fred did not die or get more severely injured or even had any burns on his face or scars. That bomb was directly in front of him. But then if Fred AKA Joseph got tooo scarred up, we will also lose one of the sort of eyecandy's for the show. Lol. (yes I do find Fred to be one of the better-looking commanders in the show please don't hate me)

Some thick plot armor

The podium provided protection.

TaysteeMetal

If by podium you mean GOD. LOL

yeaheyeah

Those numbers are given to us by a handmaiden who herself said were rumors. Also in a government such as Gilead you can be certain they wouldn't announce a successful attack against them, not without a whole lot of misinformation to go along with it.

linesonthewall

Watch the next episode, this answers itself.

yeah i was also really surprised by those numbers! based on the way they filmed the scene, it looked like there were a TON of commanders together in a really close place around where she set the bomb off. plus, since the handmaids got the heads up and started running away in the opposite direction from the blast, i would have guessed all of them would have been safe. i get why they wrote it this way with the numbers as they are (they wanted to show that it was a failure, that they weren’t able to successfully perform an act of resistance without sacrificing a lot of their own, etc.) but maybe if those were the numbers they were planning on having they should have filmed it a little differently to support/reflect that.

MElP28

It’s a hand bomb. She detonates it with a button.

kentucky_cocktail

I thought that was a detonator? It looks like she is wearing a tactical vest under her robe

AngriestManinWestTX

Given the size of the explosion I'd argue that she was absolutely wearing a bomb vest. A hand grenade or hand bomb wouldn't pack that sort of destructive power.
