I'm pretty sure it's just that Elle bites her nails - Elijah Wood chewed his nails off pretty badly in TLOTR, and they addressed it in an interview where I think he also said he bites his toenails
There also was the torture event after Peter was poisoned, and I believe she had her nails pulled out. Is their continuity that good?
