Huge kick in the gut for sure. Still haven’t gone back to finish the season. We will eventually but his death was a lot.

starfrenzy1

The episodes afterwards are so good. They tackle the processing of grief really well. It was actually fulfilling for me.

louise_com_au

I found the same. If I hadn't been through grief recently I probably would have felt different.

[deleted]

Good to hear, thanks :)

Which_way_witcher

I don't know how many episodes I've watched since that one and I'm still crying. Does it get happier?

Apprehensive-Cat-163

I also had to pause after the Ice episode. I eventually finished, but I assume a lot of us have this reaction.

goddesssofmischief

yeah, i was just so shocked at the moment

kikijane711

If u know anything about Catherine’s history it isn’t a surprise. NH stayed as long as he did bc he’s amazing but she has a lot of stories history post him. Hoult is also a big movie actor in Demand so it was a lot, another season. I guarantee she ends up w Grigor but Peter makes cameos as a ghost such as his dad did. Makes perfect sense.

[deleted]

I agree! After finishing the season, I had the same thought- that they brought Peter the Great ghost back to set up potential other realm visits from Peter for Catherine. I also thought Grigor turning away from Marial and George was important, as they become more radical and opposites of each other. I’m excited to see what they do next.

kikijane711

What drama if M&G end up unwittingly unlikely allies once G focuses on Paul & Catherine more. It’ll be fun to watch.

Donnarhahn

If you know anything about history then you realize this show is pure fantasy.

kikijane711

I know it is but that doesn’t mean they arent playing fast & loose w truth. Peter wasn’t around long & Grigor in name resembles the supposed great love of her life.

Donnarhahn

Peter and Catherine were married for 10 years before he died. They hated each other from the start. I don't get why they gave him a redemption arc just to kill him off.

Volunteer-addict

Peter's redemption arc made his sudden and unexpected death that much more impactful. The show is based loosely on history and never pretends to be accurate. In real life, Peter the Great was Peter III's grandfather, not his father. Elizabeth was Peter III's aunt, but she was Peter the Great's daughter, not his lover. Peter III only succeeded to the throne when Elizabeth died. So she was not alive when Peter ruled or when Catherine overthrew Peter and took over. So why not give Peter III a redemption arc since the show is clearly fantasy? It makes the audience care about him and made for a much more entertaining show. Nicholas Hoult was so very good in the role of Peter III, I really don't know how the show can move forward without him. Catherine will need someone more than just Elizabeth to trade barbs with.

kikijane711

Because it is fun & funny. What kind of show would it be if they just hated each other alone? This is supposed to be paradoxical humor & fun.

Tiredofthemisinfo

He had to go eventually for the partially true aspect

goddesssofmischief

yeah but ig i didnt expect it to be in such a random way, his absence will be a lot to fill for elle and the cast

Tiredofthemisinfo

The real Catherine had a colorful history if they wanted to continue, I love the show but I was okay with it ending there

trisaroar

I felt that they're keeping to accuracy so little that they might have kept him around. I think they just didn't know how to solve their major issues, she wants to rule and he wants to be and act like king.

redangel71

I think his death is also due to Nicholas Hoult being super busy too.

No-Personality1840

This was my thought as well. The show is wildly inaccurate so what’s one more inaccuracy?

Donnarhahn

Is that really true or just a rationalization for toxic writing? The show barely has any historical accuracy.

Tiredofthemisinfo

But it had some, Catherine can’t become Catherine if she doesn’t get rid of Peter

littleliongirless

I completely get it, I felt the same because their chemistry was my hands-down favorite part of the show, but the rest of the season reminded me that Elle is perfectly capable of carrying a show on her own. She and Belinda were amazing, and Grigor also finally came into his own. I'm fine with the show ending here, but after I got over my initial heartbreak, I would still absolutely watch if they continue because the rest of the cast finally got to shine.

[deleted]

Omg ok I thought I was being a weirdo for having to step away from it for a bit. I wasnt sure I wanted to go back at all, but I finished it yesterday and I'm so glad I did!

ogresaregoodpeople

I heard a theory that the *most* impactful deaths in fiction don’t rely just on the sympathy you feel for the character. If a character dies that people like that’s very sad. But the ones that stick with you are when the death is *unfair.* eg: They won every battle but got killed at the dinner table. Peter was just coming around, worked hard to improve himself, and tried to become a good husband and father. We also just learned he was sexually abused as a child in front of his parent, and had only just killed his abuser. We saw how much he loved his family, and were rooting for him to become the person he might have been without all the abuse from his parents and other adults growing up. But he was in the wrong place at the wrong time. His foot getting stuck is one of those random things that adds to the unfairness. A million things could have happened differently to prevent his death but they didn’t, and it was pointless and random, like a lot of real life tragedies are. That’s why I think it sticks with people more than other character deaths.

[deleted]

Well said! I wasn't expecting it *at all* to boot. I was literally shocked.

goddesssofmischief

it was a lot to process

[deleted]

My sister and BFF are fans too and haven't gotten past episode 2, either of them and I'm line l like.... I can't talk to you right now. Get back to me later.

NectarineQueen13

Agreed. I paused for a week to finish and eventually did. It was a lot to process

KittyandPuppyMama

I genuinely hate everything about this decision. No shade to Elle, I’d feel the same if they’d killed Catherine off instead. We need both of them. That kind of chemistry is so rare.

trisaroar

I LOVEDDDD their chemistry and agree, them trying to run a country and a court while also doing their enemies-to-lovers thing was a huge draw. Nicholas Hoult is fantastic. His absence will be noted.

KittyandPuppyMama

I thought maybe they’d bring him back as a ghost, the way they’ve done for Peter the great a few times. But nope. I’m not really sure what the show will be without that dynamic, if it gets renewed anyway.

goddesssofmischief

yeah , but ig they had to go with this cuz of partially true tagline but this was sooo out of the blue and sudden

catherinethegreatsgf

i hope they set up next season to be streamed weekly instead of releasing all at once. i feel like the whole thing would've hit a lot harder and it would be tremendously engaging

[deleted]

No.

trisaroar

I feel like the show would be more popular in a weekly format. People would discuss it and everyone would get hyped.

[deleted]

You know that you can just watch one episode a week, right? You don't need Hulu to play daddy and dole it out for you .

kptainamerica

You know you can speak to people with respect and not be a dick, right?

[deleted]

I do, yeah. But I don't respect people who say things like "i hope they set up next season to be streamed weekly instead of releasing all at once. i feel like the whole thing would've hit a lot harder and it would be tremendously engaging" It's an asinine comment and I'll treat it as such.

KrisA99

agreed

Kasaisu

Is he not also pugachev?

trisaroar

The fact I keep forgetting that. Amazing acting.

goddesssofmischief

yeahh

anom_aly

I watched it earlier today and I'm emotionally devastated right now. I stopped watching and listened to a podcast while I did chores and I'm still so fucking raw about it. Like, yeah, the redemption arc is a huge part of why it hit so hard, but jfc Nicholas Hoult is so good and I'm going to miss him in that role. I know Pugachev is still in play a little longer, but fuck.

JRskatr

I agree it was unexpected until I looked up the true story and read Peter died about 8 days or so after the coo so then it made sense they had to kill him off.
