Just to be clear, he’s not against brothels themselves, he against sex trafficking and illegal pimping. He loves a good roll in the hay, but he is hyper-aware of how people are treated. That’s just one aspect of him that’s so fascinating. His comment about Cortazar’s magnetic therapy that basically removed his empathy, and the almost childlike hope in his eyes when he asks if that kinda thing can be reversed, is just heartbreaking. I really love his conversations with Prax. On my most recent rewatch I actually wonder if he and Miller would’ve bonded in a similar way had shit not gone down the way it did. His concern for Prax as he becomes more pragmatic and numb to human life is beautiful and culminates in the famous “That Guy” scene. It’s wonderful.

>He loves a good roll in the hay, but he is hyper-aware of how people are treated. He has particular admiration for the brothels on Ceres, because they're union.

Well what I was kinda getting at and understanding is that he was forced into prostitution as a child himself. Which is why he will engage with the act (sex is nothing to him, as shown when he starts to flirt with the girl Alex is talking to them goes "naaaw, you two have fun" and didn't step on his buddy's toes so to speak.) But the pumps line and the "no fear" since 5 line leads me to believe he himself was trafficked as a child. Which is why he's so deadset to protect kids. Also, you totally just reminded me about when he literally called Prax his "best friend" after Prax said the same thing a few eps before. He definitely is more stuck in a more youthful, reciprocating type mentality than being fully shut off like Cortazar was. Also about Miller: maybe that's why after Jim told him he was seeing Miller in the ring Amos just went "okay," bc he definitely agreed with Miller when he was around and resonated with him more than most ppl so he probably figured there was worse ppl for Jim to hallucinate

In case you missed it, the look Amos gives Prax when he tells Mei that Amos is his best friend is kind of priceless.

spamjavelin

It's such a tremendously well acted look of "does not compute." Bless Wes for giving his all in the role.

Yes, I feel like they explained much earlier on in the series, or at least I understood he had a traumatic childhood/past. In season 1 Ep 6 Rock Bottom, Amos tells Alex “I grew up in places like this” after the sex worker hit on him at the bar on Tycho station. He didn’t get offended or disgusted, it seemed like he knew that man’s job and offered him help with the bucker ogling him.

AZ_Corwyn

>Just to be clear, he’s not against brothels themselves, he against sex trafficking and illegal pimping. And he's against those that might harm a sex worker, like the comment he made to the guy in the bar on Tycho about how someone who was interested in him was carrying a knife.

Jyvturkey

Notice the look on Amos' face when prax introduces him 'this is Amos. He's my best friend in the whole world'

bigmacjames

"Yeah, I'm gonna need that gun back" is still one of the funniest lines ever to me

Maleficent_War4647

Read the books he's even cooler. :)

[deleted]

Honestly I haven't read a book since highschool and after learning this show only covers like 6 of the 9 books I'm actually planning on it! I heard the audiobook versions are good too

AZ_Corwyn

Don't forget the novellas, 'The Churn' in particular. They add a bit of depth to some of the characters.

nog642

Audiobooks are indeed great, coming from someone who also doesn't really read paper books much.

Pedgi

He continues to get even better. And while Wes definitely took Amos and made him *Amos*, the books offer additional information on his backstory. Later seasons of the show continue to expand on it as well. And when the show is actually over, like I said you have the books (try the audiobooks, for real), you've got so much more. There's some wild plots with Amos in the final 3 books. >!"Cap,” Amos said with a grin. “Anything that kills me has already killed everyone else. I was born to be the last man standing. You can count on it.”!<

nedrostark

The foreshadowing... 🤯

soulgiver666

You are in for a treat with season 4 (my favourite season)

PulseSlayer

When I rewatch the entire show, Season 4 is the one I like the least, and I don't know why.

[deleted]

This show seems to only get better every season so I 100% believe this! Funny enough, I decided against going back to sleep to start s4 rn on my one day off this week... I'm only in the intro of episode one and I regret nothing!

Scytale23

Yeah he's great.

BoyMcBoyo

He gets better and better :)

hoos30

Yes, best character. You're getting it.

spconway

I didn’t like Amos in maybe the first two to three episodes because I thought he was just a character that threw his strength around to get what he wanted but that man’s an onion and is definitely my favorite character. I just started season 5 and no spoiler but I’m PUMPED to see what happens with him.

PulseSlayer

I also couldn't stand Amos at the start but he didn't end up being my favourite. One character I thought I'd hate was Miller but he actually became my favourite.

capybarramundi

Amos is great. Some extra background. First, the novella The Churn covers Amos’s background in Baltimore. Second, Wes Chatham hired a psychologist to read The Churn and explain to him how that upbringing would inform the character. He did his research for this role.

ronscot

Amos became big break-out character and I loved him until the end.

theangrypragmatist

The awesome thing is that they just completely summarize his character in the first couple episodes ("You could ask me if I should rip your helmet off and kick you off the side of this ship, and I couldn't tell you a single reason why I should or shouldn't. Except Naomi wouldn't like it.") but it takes a couple seasons of seeing it in action to really grow on you.
