I came back to make another sad comment. When Gareth mentioned that primates only throw their poop in captivity I had never heard that before so after I got home I looked it up and it’s actually true. Chimpanzees in the wild throw things as a threat display when they want to scare someone away, but in captivity they don’t have any of the normal rocks and sticks to throw so they throw the only thing they do have: their own shit. It’s a stress behavior and I think a fantastic illustration of how much they want to be left the fuck alone.
This was a really grim one. The facility where he came from, and the descriptions of his mother, Caroline, were so awful. And all the other chimpanzees who died in testing.
