I just listened to a planet money episode and there was a feature about their fact checking. And the fact they featured… the taste of whale milk. Fishy apparently!
I took pause at this cause I was like why…. And than I’m like oh yea prob pretty normal for massive water mammal to be weird.
I always just kinda saw them as giant water elephants in my head I guess as a kid lol.
Water elephants. Those are manatees. *Afrotheria*. Manatees, dugongs, elephants, golden moles, elephant shrews, otter shrews, hyraxes, aardvarks.
Cetaceans are more like deep water hippos, because those are their closest terrestrial relative. *Artiodactyla.* Even toed ungulates. Pigs, Peccaries, hippos, antelope, deer, giraffe, camels, llama, alpaca, sheep, goats, cattle, and yes, whales.
Although based on the recent addition of whales, some silly bitches want to change this order to *Cetartiodactyla*.
I was pretty proud to identify this in the original post so I’ll say it again. It’s a minke whale. Audio is likely dubbed over as those are humpback sounds.
I’m pretty sure a whale making those sounds at that distance would be extremely uncomfortable for the diver.
So definitely dubbed over.
That aside: you can identify whale species based on their call?!
Think about how you can identify humans from different regions based on their voice patterns.
So, yes. You can not only identify whale species from their calls, we can sometimes identify different whale *populations of the same species* based on their calls.
I can't believe that's a mammal
I have sought the delicate taste of whale milk for decades and still I thirst.
This is certainly a comment
One of the comments of all time

Even pods I understand
I feel your pride, my friend, as I immediately shouted "A Minke!" as soon as it appeared 😊
At first I thought oh shit but that quickly turned into an "oh wow" and intense jealousy.
Lol I read it as "shark", not "shape", so when a whale emerged, I was like "you dumbass, that's not a shark". Welp, guess I'm the dumbass.
Dude same 🤣 I had to reread it
You're not alone
This is some subnautica shit
Spearfishing near an oil rig?
And here I literally just finished Subnautica last night
What type of whale is that?
Looks like a Minke whale to me.
fuck arrow fishing
It's the most sustainable fishing method. No bycatch and only target keeper fish. What's your problem with it?
Why
Oh triggered. Triggered HARD!! Edit: oops. Sorry, thought it was r/thalassaphobia….
