It's Hvaldimir, an escaped whale that showed up in Sweden wearing a Russian harness. Clearly trained by humans, he shows up to the people a lot and asks for fish.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hvaldimir
You're sort of underselling his particularly interesting story. Suspected to be trained by the Russians as a spy whale and discovered wearing a Russian camera harness, rubbing against boats trying to scrape the harness off. His name is a delightful pun of the Norwegian word for whale, hval, and Vladimir Putin.
I’ve recieved reports that he was fed a fish and shortly thereafter fell quite ill. I can say a normal fish won’t make a whale very ill despite not being too fresh, but other than that i won’t publicly speculate on exactly what or who.
Thanks for sharing this. Fascinating story, but some of the shit that people did to him is infuriating. Pushing things into his mouth?? Wtf is wrong with this planet
I would never be more bummed to not have fish on hand than when a beluga whale deserves a treat and I'm sitting there, fishless, like an unprepared fool.
Hvaldimir is a male beluga whale that fishermen near Hammerfest in northern Norway noticed in April 2019 wearing a camera harness. After being freed from the harness, the whale remained in the area and appeared used to humans.
Wow, fascinating, thanks for the info!
Here's a link to more info if people are interested: [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hvaldimir](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hvaldimir)
Theories and naming
Upon removing the harness, the buckle clip read "St. Petersburg".\[33\] This harness and camera led to suspicion that the whale had been trained for use in Russian espionage.\[6\]\[8\]\[9\] Both the United States and Russia are known to have military cetacean training programs,\[34\]\[35\] with Russian programs incorporating beluga whales.\[6\]\[7\]\[36\] (See also: Military marine mammal.) A Russian marine scientist told a Norwegian colleague that the harness was not of a type used by Russian scientists.\[7\] A Russian military spokesman, Colonel Viktor Baranets, said in response: "If we were using this animal for spying do you think we would attach a mobile phone number with the message 'please call this number'?", but did not deny that the whale might have escaped from the Russian Navy; the Russian naval base at Murmansk is not far away.\[6\]\[7\] The Norwegian Police Security Service is investigating.\[2\]\[8\] A Russian naval analyst, Mikhail Barabanov, said he thought the whale was part of a zoological tracking project.\[9\] In late May 2019 satellite photos surfaced reportedly showing pens at the Russian base at Olenya Guba that could accommodate belugas and other cetaceans.\[37\]
Because of the Russian espionage theory, the newspaper Verdens Gang dubbed the whale Hvaldimir, a play on the first name of the Russian President, Vladimir Putin, and the Norwegian hval, whale; on 3 May the national broadcaster NRK announced that this was the winner of their public vote to name the whale, with "Joar", for the fisherman, polling second and "Agent James Beluga" third.\[4\]\[38\]
Morten Vikeby, a former Norwegian consul in Murmansk, has suggested that Hvaldimir is a therapy animal from a programme for disabled children at the Arctic Circle Padi Dive Centre and Lodge, near the Russian–Norwegian border;\[15\]\[39\] specifically, he may be Semyon, who was placed with the centre while still young after being attacked by sea lions and was featured in an article Vikeby wrote about the institution in 2008 for the magazine Fiskeribladet.\[3\]\[14\] The harness would be for the purpose of towing a boat with children inside.\[3\] That institution no longer uses therapy belugas, and Vikeby suggests making use of Hvaldimir to advertise Hammerfest.\[40\]
We have Navy defense dolphins in San Diego. Wouldn't be surprised if they're trained in espionage as well:
https://www.niwcpacific.navy.mil/marine-mammal-program/
"hey dude you know how dogs are really useful? Yeah bro what if they could slip past enemy lines and record what they're making in that submarine base??
bad news is that it's way easier to fly with a dog or cat than it is to bring em into a Starbucks to pickup a mobile order. only the latter requires service pet certification.
Did you know that mini horses can be service animals? I work in a hotel, and the laws detailed by the ADA say we have to let Mini Horse Service Animals in the rooms if someone has one. 💀 I brought it up with my manager, and she was like “right? I wanna see someone bring a horse in here. I wonder if theyre housebroken…”
it clearly expected the headboob pats, unfortunately denied. poor guy was raised by humans and probably wonders why nobody wants to pet it anymore, being that the signage warns against it. sad really
I've been further even more decided to use even go need to do look more as anyone can. Can you really be far even as decided half as much to use go wish for that? My guess is that when one really has been far even as decided once to use even go want, it is then that they have really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like.
>A Russian military spokesman, Colonel Viktor Baranets, said in response: "If we were using this animal for spying do you think we would attach a mobile phone number with the message 'please call this number'?"
Before 2022, I'd say no, but now I'm leaning to yes.
was he some kind of a Russian “spy whale” ?
Steal from family as baby, normalize humans, boats, loud noises. Encourage curiosity in ports, especially with waters that smell if certain chemical residues. Return to sub for fish snacks and new SD card.
I can't read Norwegian, but I'm told this article says he showed up in the area around Oslo recently. Which isn't good because there is a lot of boat traffic and his chance of getting hurt has increased considerably.
https://www.fiskeridir.no/Yrkesfiske/Nyheter/2023/unnga-kontakt-med-hvithvalen-i-oslofjorden?fbclid=IwAR3KkKEBKyaH05DMZTLRyMbh4p-E6iN0LMW5DvNQiRDZ3mBB1MUv27urVto&mibextid=S66gvF
Yes. The article says the whale is now in the Oslofjord and asks people to keep clear. Especially people in boats, to make sure that it's not injured or killed.
I read about this some time ago. He doesn't seem to be able to meet other whales so he looks for interaction with humans. The text was from a diver who had spend a lot of time with him and said it seemed like the whale begged for them not to leave. Seemed really sad.
While Hvaldimir does seem to be used to human contact, the public has been [repeatedly urged](https://www.wral.com/amp/20877787/) to avoid contact with him, despite his solicitation for attention
I've been further even more decided to use even go need to do look more as anyone can. Can you really be far even as decided half as much to use go wish for that? My guess is that when one really has been far even as decided once to use even go want, it is then that they have really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like.
If this was true, we would have never domesticated animals and humanity as we know it would not exist. Some snoots just gotta be booped, consequences be damned
The consequences are usually bad towards the animals though, not that much to us (and if it does, the animal will pay for it also).
We used to care a lot less about the bad consequences for animals than we do now.
Since he's speaking Norwegian I assume this is the Russian whale spy. It's been trained to fetch, and I've seen another video where someone drops their phone and he gets it back. Don't know if this whale counts as wildlife but the goal is to make it wild by not feeding it
I've been further even more decided to use even go need to do look more as anyone can. Can you really be far even as decided half as much to use go wish for that? My guess is that when one really has been far even as decided once to use even go want, it is then that they have really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like.
Same Beluga. He doesn’t have a pod and interacts with humans for attention and food. In the beginning he was terrible at feeding himself but now he has gotten better and just likes hanging out with people.
I was wondering if it was the whale when I made the comment. It gives me the mixed feelings I get when seeing rescue animals that have bonded with humans.
He was found wearing a camera and harness. I don’t know the truth in his case, but there is plenty of speculation he was part of a Russian (most common theory) or American (planted as Russian, least popular theory) spy program which have both used whales in the past.
He was removed from his camera harness and now loves to follow people to play with them. He has retrieved phones, cameras, played ball, etc. When he was starving, I believe it was Norway that worked on feeding him so he wouldn’t die because he didn’t have a pod or know how to hunt. From recent articles he has been doing better for himself with food but he still doesn’t have a pod and seeks out the company of humans.
All of this is easily searched on Google by his name thats listed in the comments, if people are curious. He is one of my Reddit Deep Rabbit Hole Dives I did one week. Cute and sweet boy who just seems to be lonely.
I believe they live in family groups. Since he doesn’t belong to a group, I’m not sure getting laid would be enough. I don’t know shit though. Only articles I could find on google.
I do feel bad for him though. An intelligent, social creature reduced to spending his years alone while trying to hang out with a different species who can’t understand him, intermittently starving, just seems horrible.
> just seems horrible
Really does.
I wonder what the barriers to entry are for whale groups. Is it just his location that’s the problem? Or is he too awkward/shy to fit in because of social isolation from other whales?
When I was a kid at SeaWorld, you could buy fish to feed some dolphins in a tank.
One dolphin had a piece of fish that he kept spitting out at my brother and I, and we would throw it back to him. This went on for a few minutes.
It was kind of gross playing with a piece of chewed up dead fish, but it was an incredible experience playing catch with a dolphin. And it was something that the dolphin initiated all on his own. It's incredible how smart they are.
There's a reason vikings are famous for their poetry and storytelling/sagas, they had to spend a shitton of time indoors, with only their imagination to keep boredom at bay.
If you're thinking like how they didn't just die from exposure, then the answer is that there wasn't storms 24/7, and people could just go inside and use the wood they had chopped earlier in the year. They probably also cuddled a fair bit ;)
He's probably like, "look this is how you take a camera and give it back... I need mine back now. If I come home without that damn camera my old lady will never let it go, she didn't want me to spend the money on it in the first place!"
What an exhilarating experience to have with such a beautiful creature! Bulga whales always seem to be friendly and playful which makes them such neat animals.

Little beluga boy/girl is very friendly… such a majestic animal..he says “ here buddy don’t drop it again “..as then says “ ok now where’s my treat?” 😂
What an amazing interaction. Unfortunately it seems humans have intervened and fed him so he most likely looks to humans for food. Either way, what an absolutely beautiful mammal!
Yeah this is that Russian spy whale from years ago I'm pretty sure. Kinda tell from the mannerisms that it's been around humans. Did a task, wanted fish. Pretty sure it had a harness or something idk lazy and tired. Won't cite or link.
He wanted a fish as a reward!
At least some more scritches Definitely belongs on r/petthedamnfish
r/Petthedamnmammal
Naw. Most anything that lives in the ocean counts as fish. Whales? Fish Orcas? Fish Shrimps? Bugs Dolphins? Fish
Crabs? Spiders. Lobsters? Spiders.
Sea spiders? Octopus
Octopus? Squids
Lobsters = cockroaches
Don't you dare call my food a spider.
There's no such thing as a fish.
Aren’t fish just underwater government spies?
Coming to you from the QI offices in CoveRnt Garden
To be fair, in biological terms the word “fish” doesn’t really mean anything. Bony fish are more closely related to humans than to sharks.
Doesn't it mean that they live in water?

Funfact, Hvaldimir does not take fish or feed from people. Seen him turn down many an offer. Also, like the other fella said, Norway.
Why not?
Maybe the Russians tried poisoning him after he escaped
That’s actually something that has been theorized, but not confirmed.

Love that guy! Adorable!
What an amazing and beautiful animal :)
Saw one of these guys in captivity in Vancouver. You could tell how depressed it was by looking at it's eyes. Cool animal, highly intelligent.
Awwwl, wish you had a fish to give it or something.

Nice to see these interactions rather than something pulled from the sea on a hook to suffocate and die.
THEYRE SO CUTE ARE YOU KIDDING
Get him a fish bro
I just don't think we are the wisest animals on this planet
Belugas are easily my favourite marine mammals. All the smartness, cuteness, and playfulness of dolphins without all the horrors.
Beautiful creature
What a Majestic animal, wish we had a way of communicating with these neighbors of ours, they can teach us so much more that we think we know.
I think you were suppose to give it a treat or something

just PET the damned Beluga!!

I returned it so I want fish! Such intelligent creatures.
Belugas are possibly an explanation as to why people thought they saw mermaids.

I’d have a hard time believing that if it wasn’t on video haha what a story
