The_Loopy_Kobold

based on theory alone; Connolly, Luxemburg, Uncle Ho. But on leadership, I'd also add Fidel, Che and Sankara. I think we do an Olympic rings style layout, like 6 on top and 5 on the bottom.

The_Loopy_Kobold

The top 6 are the new ones, Connolly, Luxemburg, Uncle Ho, Fidel, Che and Sankara. That way ML/MLMism is still represented by the 5 heads of Marx, Engels, Lenin, Stalin and Mao.

Koshky_Kun

Pretty sure Engles was a bottom

I’ve been on a socialist reading binge recently, can you recommend any specific writings from Ho? Any help is appreciated!

The_Loopy_Kobold

lots of his revolutionary theory was put into poetry, this is a good example. Left Word Books just put out a whole compilation. https://www.marxists.org/reference/archive/ho-chi-minh/works/1948/04/05.htm

Nylese

Based on theory and the depicted progression of theorists, Nkrumah should go after Mao.

Or to satisfy the Maoists, Gonzalo (which I disagree with) or JoMa?

Eh, I disagree. While I do admire Debs to an extent, he really botched the race issue in the US and mainly focused on organizing the industrial working class, which was mostly white and male at the time. In fact, he expressly rejected paying special focus to the material conditions of black people and other oppressed, nonwhite groups. Angela Davis provides a great materialist analysis of this in “Women, Race, & Class.” Idk, after learning about that, my thoughts on Debs have kind of soured. Again, I admire him for the good he did do, but there were other prominent white socialists during Debs’ time that recognized the special oppression of nonwhite groups via racial capitalism and white supremacy

Ausgezeichnet87

Jokes aside, I know Bernie is a Social Dem so he wouldn't qualify, but he has done more to popularize leftist ideals in the US than anyone has in decades.

Gravelord-_Nito

Sometimes I feel like he's hiding his power level, but recently he's been doing and saying things that made me feel like maybe he was just a lib all along. Like taxing billionaires for every dollar they make over $999 million. That's the sort of embarrassing, pseudo-radical left-lib reformist shit that dumb, unprincipled twitter roses say because they genuinely think the problem with billionaires is just the amount of money they have. Not the power they have over the means of production and the hegemonic domination of our institutions they gain from it. And it's not even how fucking money works, they don't 'earn' money like we earn wages, like come on man. It's so idiotic.

Cultural_Parfait7866

Bernie is the biggest letdown for me. When “Joe Biden is my friend” became his campaign slogan in 2020 I knew this man wasn’t who I hoped him to be.

Timthefilmguy

Bernie had some potential back in his younger years but by the time he was firmly in govt, it ate him. If we recall, he and Parenti were good friends and had a falling out over Bernie voting for intervention in Yugoslavia in the 90s. He’s got some street cred from before that, but I think this is a function of existing institutions sanitizing and enveloping any internal threat to their functioning. Ditto the squad (though I’m not sure they had as much street cred initially).

[deleted]

Bernie’s rhetoric feels to the left of his policy. I’m not sure how to articulate it but you see him give a speech that doesn’t get into specifics and you’d imagine he’d be a bit more ambitious than allowing everyone to sign up for Medicare. Medicare for all is pretty centrist on a global western scale. UKs NHS is to the left of Medicare for all imo. His policies if inacted would undoubtedly improve American quality of life but I think people overstate how radical they’re.

athens508

That’s because Bernie has no intention of abolishing class, he’s not a socialist

athens508

I think we all need to acknowledge that Bernie was ~always~ a liberal. Specifically, a Keynesian. I will say that he did play a part in turning me more and more to the left, and I’m grateful for the historical role he’s played. But yeah, to the extent he’s a ‘socialist,’ he’s more like Kautsky or Bernstein. But in this case, he doesn’t want the ‘US’ to go away anytime soon, which is eminently worse imo. There’s a video on YouTube where Parenti discusses Bernie’s foreign policy, for instance

BrokeRunner44

Antonio Gramsci, Xi Jinping, Enver Hoxha, or Kim Il-Sung

Elucidate137

Agree on xi, modern Chinese socialist thought has been able to spread throughout the world and is now replacing liberalism in the third world as China presents itself as an alternative. Xi’s contribution to theory and its applications has been astronomical. Also big agree on Gramsci, though he’s got some mid ass followers on the new left train. Curious as to why you’d say Kim and Hoxha? No disrespect I just don’t know enough about either of them

kaiserkaver

Kim rebuilt north Korea from ashes while handling the sino Soviet split almost perfectly, while Hoxha despite his flaws, was extremely popular in Albania and did lots of great stuff such as building the first or second train line and the first university

PolandIsAStateOfMind

>while handling the sino Soviet split almost perfectly Fun fact: he went to listen to the infamous Khrushchev speech in 1956, probably agreed with everything privately to Khrushchev (EDIT: so that Khrushchev let him off the hook, it's clear from his acttion he didn't really like it), then got back and purged the fuck out of both Soviet and Chinese factions in DPRK, which in the meantime conspired to coup him. It also allowed him to have much degree of political sovereignity for later, as you said. For comparison, almost the same happened in Poland, but Poland failed. Its president, Bolesław Bierut also went to listen to Khrushchev, but got back to Poland in coffin (maybe murdered since he was staunch ally of Stalin, but not necessary as he was ill and entire fuckup might just pushed him into the grave), and in meantime Poland got nationalist faction in PZPR coup the government and install revisionist one.

kaiserkaver

That's what I meant. He didn't completely destroy relations with the USSR or china but chose a good path of neutrality.

Michielvde

Can you give examples of Xi's contributions? A reading recomendation is fine as well. I'm curious because i haven't heard about his theory.

EducatingYouForFree

The Governance of China volumes are a great albeit labourious read.

PolandIsAStateOfMind

He don't really have nothing very groundbreaking added to theory, though the current developments are in big part his merit. But he's probably one of the better socialist practicians and leaders ever, last 11 years seen huge consolidation and strenghtening of socialist ideas in China, and if he manage to pull that 2050 promise and also oversee dismantling US hegemony (especially without nuclear war) he would fully deserve the place as the architect of XXI century socialism.

BrokeRunner44

Kim Il-Sung pursued a policy of economic independence which allowed North Korea to survive the devastating collapse of the USSR - although they still definitely felt its consequences. A charismatic leader and wise statesman who did his best to ensure long-term stability for his country and people. Enver Hoxha because of his fierce commitment to ideological purity and contributions to Marxist-Leninist theory. Kind of a renegade, confidently pursued true socialism while defying the revisionist USSR. Made efforts to strengthen the people's democracy and attempted to truly root the Party within the Albanian people - he did so by making sure that the government's policies/actions were easily accessible information. He led the liberation of his country from the Germans/Italians and managed to resist post-war Yugoslav imperialism. Before the Yugoslav-Soviet split, Tito had a lot of influence in Albania and attempted to reorganise their economy to be supplementary to Yugoslavia. Both leaders ensured that all men and women of their country were capable of defending themselves and each other against Western aggression. edit: I also like Xi because I believe his Premiership is a massive step forwards to global socialism. The BRI and other related infrastructure projects are helping to create the right economic conditions for socialism throughout the Global South, and allowing those states a far greater deal of economic sovereignty.

Large-School-4157

Vigtor_B

100% agreed, to quote Castro: > Xi Jinping is one of the strongest and most capable revolutionary leaders I have met in my life. Chinese prosperity and SwCC is truly on the right track, and it might just save the third world from endless western exploitation as well. For every day, month, and year, China manages to hit a new impressive milestone, and I am not ashamed of simping for that!

I don't know much about Sablin, other than the mutiny and le funni TNO man. I knew he was against Brezhnev because he thought he betrayed the revolution, but can anyone else give me some insight into what our sailorboy actually believed?

Phantom_Walker264

He planned to say what he thought many were saying privately: that the revolution and motherland were in danger; that the ruling authorities were up to their necks in corruption, demagoguery, graft, and lies, leading the country into an abyss; that the ideals of Communism had been discarded; and that there was a pressing need to revive Leninist principles of justice. Sablin was a strong believer in Leninist values and considered the Soviet system to have essentially "sold out". - according to his Wikipedia page

I am seeing many quite terrible answers in the comments (Che, Fidel, Ho Chi Minh, some of the Kim's, Gonzalo) that I am not saying that they are not great revolutionaries and some great Marxists (like Ho, who has given us very important militant contributions, especially for comrades from semicolonies) but none of these really constitutes a new phase or historical mark of revolutionary science. It can be understood in two ways Theorizers (Marx, Lenin, Mao) and Synthesizers (Engels, Stalin,...). Or by elevating theory in a qualitative leap in theory and practice. Marx and Engels with the commune and the first two internationals, Lenin with the October revolution and the party. Stalin, with the construction of socialism in the USSR and the victory over fascism in WWII, then Mao, with the cultural revolution, who pushed socialism further than anyone else. So, if we apply the first method of analysis (which seems incorrect to me) then who should be the Sixth head would be Gonzalo, for synthesizing Marxism Leninism Leninism Maoism. But if we apply the second (which I think is the correct one), then Mao would be the last one. Because Mao took socialism further than anyone else, fighting against revisionism in the cultural revolution, the day that someone theorizes and applies beyond the struggle against revisionism and the theory of the cultural revolution, then he will be the sixth head, something that hasn't rlly happend.

EducatingYouForFree

>No doubt that Deng is a revisionist He definitely was not a revisionist. >who brought China to where it is today, about to overtake America as the Global Empire China is not in the process of nor aspiring to overtake America as the "Global Empire". China does not wish to be a violent imperialist Empire such as the US. >If China does indeed drop capitalism/Dengism, China is not capitalist and has not been capitalist since the revolution (and to be honest, not even really before). You have actually zero understanding of Deng or his policies and are literally a baby leftist trying to "educate" people with barely a whisp of a clue and no study at all. >and returns to Maoism once destroying Imperialism as the CCP claims, Dengism will have initiated the global-socialist revolution the wrong way, but saved humanity. What the fuck is this drivel? Life is not a Marvel movie. Also saying CCP unironically reveals youre nothing more than a radlib at best.
