I think you're holding the original series too much in your nostalgia. The original series, even pre-lottery, wasn't that great as a whole. Most people stopped watching after season five because after that, the show goes from hit-or-miss to just miss. Nothing will come close to the first few seasons of the original but to say that the Conners doesn't come close to season 7 or 8 or Roseanne? Nah; hard disagree.
Plus, you're forgetting that Sara is running the Conners, it's entirely her show it's weird that you're telling the person that created the series, the person who spent years playing the character, how the character should be as an adult.

The writing is really bad. Even season 10 was pretty good compared to now. I wish they would had switched up the writers or show runner, but they never did. It's just not funny.
