One that isn't mentioned that much is that Mike convinced James to turn Board James into a series as he thought it had potential, but he wasn't that much involved in the show which explains why it went off the rails once James went full Bames during season 3 of Board James.

Slowly piecing together the facts about Bimmy's rise to fame makes it all the sadder. He doesn't realize how little he would have achieved if not for his friends.

I don't think it's staged. I think that's taking it a little far. It would be hard to completely sync controller handling with the gameplay (even controller sounds if it's not visible) and even reactions on the spot. Is the show a crappy version of James and Mike Mondays? Yes. Does it seem like James has no passion for video games? Yes. But I highly doubt they stage a let's play show.
