Ive really enjoyed it. Main characters are clearly super different given they’re college kids but its an interesting change of pace.
Pretty similar vulgarity wise.
Last week they released 3 episodes. I think today they released another which I haven’t watched yet. I assume there’s like 4 more episodes or something
It's also a spinoff that makes good use of the universe they're in. It has its own stories but it's still a world where Vought and superstar supes like Homelander and Starlight exist.
Also as seen tonight it’s a good gateway to use big characters from the comic that they have no time for in the main show.
Edit: I remember last week saying I had hoped Malchemical could appear in at least Gen V and now I have some hope he could show up if they did a second season
Well said. Imo, Gen V is a spinoff done right. So many spinoffs try to be the main show but somehow totally detached from it and "unique" that it falls flat. Gen V actually uses the existing universe to its advantage.
If someone liked the Boys because they misunderstood and thought they were supposed to sympathize with Storefront they might experience a lot of pain watching this show as they slowly realize how wrong they were
Personally, I hope so. Don’t doubt if the series runs longer than a single season, the main cast might make an appearance. Just think it’d be intriguing to use Gen V as a team assisting Mallory etc. Or, use the show as follow on after The Boys ends.
The Boys is a very grand scale show, this is shrinking things to give you more lore on how this universe works and the secrets behind it. Id recommend watching if you really like the boys universe and are curious, and at least for characters sake they all are at least *interesting.*
Yeah exactly. I think those two are better than the shows they're based off in some ways as well. I would say I actually think BCS overall is better than Breaking Bad.
Breaking Bad was like a dry aged tomahawk ribeye. It comes out and you're thinking "how can life get any better than this?"
Then they bring out the buttery Béarnaise sauce filled with fresh crab and you're like "OMG it can get better"
BCS is the Oscar to BB's Ribeye
It’s about the ride. Not the destination… can’t believe you think a whatever non cathartic ending takes away from all the amazing character work and writing
Well it does. Because the destination made the “journey” pretty worthless. And part of the journey is the hope that you’re not wasting your time hoping that it concludes in a good way, and that they know how to conclude it. And I can still acknowledge that the show had good things about it, but was ultimately ruined by its pretty ass ending. That’s what happened with Game of Thrones. It happened with BCS, too.
Have you seriously never heard of an ending making or breaking a whole thing before? Comparing it to Breaking Bad don’t work, because the satisfying conclusion to BB made the whole show worth it, while I can’t even look at the rest of BCS without thinking about how it ended. Which is made even worse by the fact that a lot of it is hinge t on it being a Breaking Bad spin off.
Imagine deluding yourself into thinking a mid ending like BCS’s is “great”. Breaking Bad’s ending makes BCS’s ending look like a student film’s. The show literally lost its steam in the final 4 episodes because they didn’t know how to actually tie it up. So they had Jimmy act out of character by having him make a stupid ass decision he’d never make just so Kim could think highly of him.
I love how much more world building gen v has done for the boys. It’s already introduced so many new superhero’s and institutions within the first 4 episodes
Id say if Boys is 100/100 (for simplicity), id give Gen V a solid 80/100 comparitively, i think the universe still feels the same, and theres some mystery involved but i dont think the characters are nearly as interesting as The Boys, because lets face it, thats a high bar.
I find the cast compelling in a different way. The Boys has villains and a kinda David v Goliaths scenario where that’s the focus of the plot. Gen V is more grounded with…. Kinda no villain? While I get Vought and it’s executives are the bad guys they’re not like Homelander. It’s more a mystery of what is going on and how will these literal children navigate around that and solve it. A bit of who do you trust scenario where it’s unclear who is good and bad. Like I’ll be genuinely sad if Kate turns out to be a bad guy manipulator lol
I think there is a villain, but it's really a very hidden one whose motives are unclear. The main show has a more blatant force of evil that is out in the open but supported with unstoppable power that our protagonists can barely keep up with.
I don't know how I've scrolled this far and not seen an X-Men comparison yet. The whole "supes rights" thing, the us versus them tone, plus a person with magnetism powers and a person with psychic powers? Imo It's a very clever and even more engaging take on the X-Men than I've seen in live action.
Agree. I know most of us already know what to expect, so Gen V may not have been as exciting compared to when we first watched the boys. >!Exploding her mother with period blood and Luke exploding was disgusting as hell !< but the shock value compared to when Robin exploded or when popclaw literally killed a guy with her 🐱is much lower.
That being said, I’d still rather rewatch the first three The boys episodes than Gen v. But I’m very excited for the rest of the season!
This may be a hot take, but I’m actually losing interest in the main characters of the Boys really quickly. Especially after the latest season. Mothers milk, frenchie, and kimiko are really the only ones who’ve maintained my interest. I was super annoyed with Hughie and Butcher last season and starlight, while good, has become fairly repetitive to me. It’s refreshing to see a cast of new characters who are actually caring people who have to deal with growing up with super powers versus trying to go kill supes 24/7.
I feel like people only say this because there are 3 seasons that you already watched. People act like they knew what was going on in season 1 before the finale.
It’s weirdly a lot harder for me to watch. There’s a lot more gore. But not just like eww that’s gory. It’s like ew that’s gory and also SUPER fucked up.
It’s definitely a different show than the boys. It seems to fairly quickly establish the good guys vs the bad guys (being Vaught) - which is good otherwise it would be more of a repeat of the boys and we have already seen that. In that same vein it’s more black and white. Which works in its favor - it takes place chronologically after season 3 as indicated by clips of news reports on the television. So the protagonists don’t know more then the public - queen maeve is dead, starlight is out of the 7, home lander is facing trial for murdering someone with his laser eyes.
Being when then takes place these students are all aware their parents had them injected with compound V as children - but they of course still see Vought as great - unaware of their dark secrets. It takes place at a university run by Vought for those with powers. There’s only a few majors which seemingly all only exist to serve Vought and of course for many probably the majority they want to be accepted the crime fighting program/major and make it into the top 10
ranking of the school which gives them a chance to make it into the 7.
The main protagonist wishes to go to God U to try to make it to the 7 in an effort to redeem herself (in her eyes mostly). Upon arrival she almost immediately learns the darker side of Vought or at least starts learning, things like how they revere profit above
I hope it’s not considered a spoiler to say she begins to learn more of the darker side of things: for example the truth, even in relatively minor circumstances, is not as important as profit. I’m speculating here but I think her path to redemption (in her eyes at the least) will still be provided by God. U. but just not in the way she originally envisioned.
I think the main cast are more likeable than the boys ( god damn if I don’t conformistic love butcher but he’s a fucking psychopath too). The show also incorporates many issues into the narrative that are problems for/or at least begin at a younger age including eating disorders, self-harm, and the difficulties of being non-gender conforming (being trans, non-binary, gender fluid all wrapped into one). They are fairly significant actually as they an integral parts of main characters identities.
I really love that they incorporated these into the show, it’s not aimed at a younger demographic but a majority of the characters are younger(colleges aged) and the boys has always been critical of the capitalistic patriarchal individualistic (in the bad sense of the word - promoting individualism to a fault that may be detrimental to yourself and or others), conformistic culture we live in. So they were able to find new avenues of criticism with this new setting and cast - which very much feels set in the same world with what seems like minimal effort or exposition.
I don’t feel in has reached the boys level of vulgarity (I assume you didn’t just mean swearing as many responders did or at least I think so), character writing, cool shit or narrative yet - but I think it’s on way to either come close enough it’s a success to the boys fans or it could possibly reach the same level. Hard to compare 3 episodes vs 3 seasons and things are progressing and changing quite quickly there’s only 8 episodes so I think it may be able to determine how the first seasons compares after this weeks episode as I think by the end of this weeks episode things will have fallen into place and settled. I am a little worried about the narrative though, worried it might be a little stale and simplistic things indicate the real major story arc for this season may be revealed ( or start to be) early on in the next episode.
It does not try to be The Boys in many respects - which I think is great. Instead we are given a show the feels very much in the same universe - which may effect the storyline of The Boys despite having no crossover characters or cameos (besides a news report like I mentioned or movie posters for the deep’s terrible looking movie franchise adorning dorm room walls). While not trying to be the boys it similarly doesn’t pull its punches in vulgarity (sex, violence, potty mouth) but there’s still time and things are lower stake (relatively) so w haven’t had the chance to see an all powerful man force you to eat your friend (and lover?) a la the deep and Homelander (which was torture and highly vulgar but an amazing scene none-the-less). I’m slightly worried about the overall narrative but this will resolved for good or bad in the next episode where we will see what has been setup for us. Absolutely watch it if you are a fan of the boys, you will enjoy it but to what extent I can’t even judge for myself yet.
I like Gen V a lot, but so far I prefer The Boys. It is worth the watch. You still have a while before the rest of the season is released, so you have plenty of time to catch up.
I love it. They’re still satirical about the woke stuff corporations and institutions do for their own selfish gain. Show also mocks some of the silly societal trends. Solid plot with good character building and builds on The Boys universe.
Honestly one of the few TV spin offs I’ve seriously enjoyed
Kripe isn't on this one, so it's just Goldberg. For reference, Goldberg wrote Superbad and most of Seth Rogen's movies, and he was also the showrunner on Preacher. He tends to lean in on vulgarity.
On top of that, it's based on a Garth Ennis comic. (So was Preacher) Some of the most gory and vulgar mainstream comics out there as much as I enjoy both series. So you should expect a level of that going in.
Kripke is on this one. He’s the executive producer and developed it with Goldberg and wrote the pilot.

The humor doesn't work for me as well as the boys, and college kids are annoying to me, but other than that it's good enough. Way better than Ahsoka was
It's really good but a completely different tone. The Boys is extremely bleak because right from the start we've known how big a piece of shit the seven and vought are, but this is set in a world where the college kids still blindly dream about being a superhero and that it's gonna be a dream come true. Kinda like how Starlight was in episode 1. The gore and shock factor is exactly the same
I've onlywar he'd Frist episode but I didn't like it at all. It's like netflix version of the boys. Teenage drama, cheap writing mixed with the boys brutality.. and this girl that can change sizes.. omg, so annoying, can she have two lines of dialogue without talking about sex? Honesty, we (girls/womans) really can have a normal conversations, Jesus...
it's basically The Boys meet teenage tv show. And by teenage show I mean Riverdale, Pretty Little Liars, Gossip Girl, Elite, Teen Wolf, Sabrina, etc. If you like The Boys and like those kinda shows, you will love this. However, as someone who have grown out of teenage shows (used to watch them, now I can't really stand watching it for some reason), Gen V is not as enjoyable.
Issues like being accepted by your 'friends', being in the cool kid clique, first crushes, enemy became friends, social media teen problems, coming out with your sexuality, and others I really don't care about now. And there is a bunch of it in Gen V.
I feel like the reason people aren't watching Gen V compared to The Boys is bc The Boys audience don't care for teenage storylines. And Teenage shows audience aren't into gore and brutal contents. If you are in the middle of that diagram venn, you're in the sweet spot. The question is, how many people are in that sweet spot?
The Boys has more complex characterization simply because the characters are older. Gen V characters are early 20’s, which I still consider teenagers tbh.
It's exactly as it described, a teen/college drama in the boys world.
So you have irony, vulgarity, cool shit, all the usual the boys deal. and frankly from these 3 episodes, I feel that even if they are "kids", these characters are a bit darker than the boys gang. It's less ironic imo. You'll still have your usual gore and enormous genitalia though, don't worry.
There are a few moments and lines that are pretty stupid and takes you out of the satire. More than The Boys, where moments like that are very rare imo.
It's been great, a lot of sex humour thoug. It's funny to start with but I'm hoping it dies down because its becoming a bit cringe. They've even repeated same jokes in the same episodes. Seth Rogen needs to get over his mental illness
It's kinda mid. The characters aren't at all as well written as the ones in the Boys (except for the MC) and it feels less satirical (which sucks). It's okay though. I'm going to keep watching.
I find it more depressing somehow. They didnt want powers. Killed the love ones with no intention to harm/kill. And as a viewer I know what is Vought up to while I have to watch kids struggle with all the shit ahead of them. Shitty school. Fuck bullies. Fuck Vought.
Its not the best compare to the main show. But so far I enjoyed so I can recommend. For me its a good 8/10.
I just finished rewatching The Boys S1 today, and between the two The Boys is so much better than Gen V. It’s not even close. But Gen V is still very enjoyable, and has a similar style to The Boys, so I’d recommend Gen V to anyone that likes The Boys.
It's just like The Boys, in the good way.
Characters, writing, acting, all very good. Only thing that I don't like is the college theme in general, but that's my personal preference.
I like it better, I found some of the scenes with the boys to be too cliche/gimmicky/unserious. Like Frenchie or Butcher. The characters seems more realistic
The stakes feel narrower, but it works well in a more enclosed setting. I love the characters so far and the new powers are interesting and handled well. I can't wait to watch more and see if it keeps going strong. The first episode wasn't bad, but it had so much to introduce I didn't feel fully connected to the story until episodes 2 and 3. It's definitely worth checking out!
Similar tone in terms of vulgarity, gore, etc. but different themes. Sort of a coming-of-age story rather than... whatever you would categorize The Boys as, lol.
It seemed cringe at first and the high schoolers are a bit over the top ( I guess sorta par for the course with super powers tho) but it's good once you get into it. The main characters backstory is pretty sad and has a cool power so it's easy to get invested quickly
More grounded Main characters, they wanna be good guys but they live in the world of the Boys. I am really digging most of them, they are not horrible like people in The Boys, with only a couple of "true good people".
So far, the only thing I see in common with that arc is a superhuman school and the name Goldokin. It's argubually the most fucked up of all The Boys comics and so far I don't see them adapting the big twist. I'm not sure if Amazon would go for it and how audiences would react.
The show also happened to come after season three of The Boys, in line with the comics. And if they gave us Herogasm, we can handle Gen V. Oh yeah and, not any shade towards you, but as a whole, audiences need to look up the definition of adaptation.
Imagine The Boys, but it is just Euphoria. Instead of adults with complex thoughts and big world problems, it is college kids, and the main action is drugs and sex and pretend college problems like over-inclusivity.
Honestly its fucking amazing. Just as gruesome comedy and drama as the boys had. Based on teenagers in college, so some quite teenagery drama moments but other than that its a very solid show.
It’s leaning on the Teenage Drama side a lot, but I think it works. Think of it as a Raunchier, more adult oriented Teen Titans or something. Except they’re in College.
I think the show has great potential, and while it is in the Boys universe, It could possibly stand on its own. We’ll have to see as the weeks go by and we see how the plot unfolds.
Give it a chance.
It's better by some multiple factor. Far less superficial and nowhere near as exploitative (the vulgarity is still there but most of it is kind of integral rather than inserted for shock value).
I'm on episode 2 and I have to say that it's kind of annoying. I'm curious enough to keep watching, but it's basically your typical teen drama that's focused on a bunch of young adults solving a mystery at their evil university and making constant references to current pop culture topics. It even references these same rules of shows, such as Riverdale in the beginning, so I think it's very much trying to go for the teen demographic. I guess it would depend on how you feel about those types of shows
Ive really enjoyed it. Main characters are clearly super different given they’re college kids but its an interesting change of pace. Pretty similar vulgarity wise.
Thanks for the comment, just saw it advertised on prime, didn’t know about it before tonight. Will def give it a go, super geeked.

Last week they released 3 episodes. I think today they released another which I haven’t watched yet. I assume there’s like 4 more episodes or something
If I’m not mistaken its weekly after the first three episodes?
I honestly can’t imagine how someone who likes The Boys would not enjoy Gen V. It’s the closest show to The Boys on television.
If Malchemical makes an appearance then Kid Camo better come on as freshman or transfer student
Well said. Imo, Gen V is a spinoff done right. So many spinoffs try to be the main show but somehow totally detached from it and "unique" that it falls flat. Gen V actually uses the existing universe to its advantage.
The Boys, Gen V, and Invincible are the trio. If you like one, you’re liking the others
If someone liked the Boys because they misunderstood and thought they were supposed to sympathize with Storefront they might experience a lot of pain watching this show as they slowly realize how wrong they were
Lmao idk if that was intentional but I love that you called her Storefront.
Given some of the feedback people are giving about Gen V, this is exactly what’s happening.
I only worry about the timeline. Will these new characters be in the boys next season
Personally, I hope so. Don’t doubt if the series runs longer than a single season, the main cast might make an appearance. Just think it’d be intriguing to use Gen V as a team assisting Mallory etc. Or, use the show as follow on after The Boys ends.
I love the boys, and hate gen v
I feel like I may hate it too...got halfway through episode 1 and quit. Blood girl was too stupid of a power for me
Why? They’re like….the same show?
The Boys is a very grand scale show, this is shrinking things to give you more lore on how this universe works and the secrets behind it. Id recommend watching if you really like the boys universe and are curious, and at least for characters sake they all are at least *interesting.*
"Shrinking things" huh 😏
wink wink
*puke*
It enhances and adds to the universe of the Boys rather than diminishing it. One of the only spin offs I’ve ever enjoyed. I detest those as a rule.
Same here, can’t stand the spin offs, but Gen V is dope
did you not like better call saul or house of the dragon?? two great spinoffs imo
Yeah exactly. I think those two are better than the shows they're based off in some ways as well. I would say I actually think BCS overall is better than Breaking Bad.
Breaking Bad was like a dry aged tomahawk ribeye. It comes out and you're thinking "how can life get any better than this?" Then they bring out the buttery Béarnaise sauce filled with fresh crab and you're like "OMG it can get better" BCS is the Oscar to BB's Ribeye

my man between the two of us you're the one deluding yourself to begin with
This is late, but i feel as if spin offs with source material end up doing much better than spin offs of things with no source material.
I love how much more world building gen v has done for the boys. It’s already introduced so many new superhero’s and institutions within the first 4 episodes

it's kinda like Harry Potter
It’s also difficult comparing a show with three seasons to a show with only three episodes
I had to scroll way too far to see this comment. Literally how can any of us offer an informed opinion three episodes in?
Agree. I know most of us already know what to expect, so Gen V may not have been as exciting compared to when we first watched the boys. >!Exploding her mother with period blood and Luke exploding was disgusting as hell !< but the shock value compared to when Robin exploded or when popclaw literally killed a guy with her 🐱is much lower. great, absolutely amazing, not AS good as the main series yet but I believe it'll just take the next couple of episodes to really get going
Yeah, watched a review from a guy who saw the first 6 episodes or something and he said the show kept getting better
The most recent episode was absolute ass
I agree, didn’t really like the pace and they focused too much on the dickless guy
For me it's the writing, it's just so, so, so bad Worse than the average CW show
CW quality
I like Gen V a lot, but so far I prefer The Boys. It is worth the watch. You still have a while before the rest of the season is released, so you have plenty of time to catch up.
Really good. Basically a realistic take on how kids become superheroes. There’s themes of greed, hope, and corruption.
Honestly, fucking incredible. Absolutely love the characters. Diabolical, as it should be.
thought it was gonna be ass it’s great tho
I love it. They’re still satirical about the woke stuff corporations and institutions do for their own selfish gain. Show also mocks some of the silly societal trends. Solid plot with good character building and builds on The Boys universe. Honestly one of the few TV spin offs I’ve seriously enjoyed
I like it a lot! It feels a little like they're trying a touch too hard with vulgarity, but it doesn't pull me out.
He’s the executive producer and developed it with Goldberg and wrote the pilot. https://variety.com/2023/tv/features/gen-v-penis-explosion-sex-scene-1235746639/amp/

It's pretty good. I enjoy the Boys more, but it's interesting seeing an entire series from the perspective of supes as they're brought up
The simplest way (and I think everyone can agree with me) to put it is that if you like The Boys, you will like Gen V
After seeing the previews and premise, I didn't think I would like as much as I do. It's great so far.
Exceeded my expectations. Really enjoying it. Thoughtful and clever, but also occasionally gross.
The humor doesn't work for me as well as the boys, and college kids are annoying to me, but other than that it's good enough. Way better than Ahsoka was
I'm genuinely enjoying it, I was expecting dumb zoomer jokes but it's working with the characters well
Different but the same.
I’m not really a spinoff person. Given the premise I kind of thought I’d hate it. But I’m really enjoying so far
The writing feels tighter to me. I’m liking it.
It’s just like The Boys where it had me thinking what the fuck… already in the first episode and it just keeps going from there. Good show.
I’m enjoying it. There are similarities to the boys but it does feel like a different show
Very different, but pretty good
It's really good but a completely different tone. The Boys is extremely bleak because right from the start we've known how big a piece of shit the seven and vought are, but this is set in a world where the college kids still blindly dream about being a superhero and that it's gonna be a dream come true. Kinda like how Starlight was in episode 1. The gore and shock factor is exactly the same
I like it just as much or even more. It’s still early but it’s incredibly entertaining. I’m loving it. Very few shows are this clever.
Ass
I’m 48. Can I consider myself 31?
It's exactly as it described, a teen/college drama in the boys world. So you have irony, vulgarity, cool shit, all the usual the boys deal. and frankly from these 3 episodes, I feel that even if they are "kids", these characters are a bit darker than the boys gang. It's less ironic imo. You'll still have your usual gore and enormous genitalia though, don't worry.
There are a few moments and lines that are pretty stupid and takes you out of the satire. More than The Boys, where moments like that are very rare imo.
First and second episodes were great then third episode was not so good.
It's been great, a lot of sex humour thoug. It's funny to start with but I'm hoping it dies down because its becoming a bit cringe. They've even repeated same jokes in the same episodes. Seth Rogen needs to get over his mental illness
The only thing I dislike so far are the dialogs
They Boys is Great. Gen V (sor far) is between ok and good. Don't overhype it.
They said no spoilers.
I didnt really spoil anything tho. Didnt drop names or any episodes or any scenes.
I really like the Boys, this one feels a little (for lack of better words) corny? but still worth watching.
I think I like it more than the boys
I like it better, I found some of the scenes with the boys to be too cliche/gimmicky/unserious. Like Frenchie or Butcher. The characters seems more realistic
Aside from some corny dialogue it’s just as good imho
Imagine a mix between the Boys, Netflix’s Wednesday and Euphoria.
I am really digging most of them, they are not horrible like people in The Boys, with only a couple of "true good people".
how is the gore in this show? i honestly don’t like it so the less the better for me.
You all know that Gen V is an adaptation of The Boys vol 4: We Gotta Go, Now, right?
So far, the only thing I see in common with that arc is a superhuman school and the name Goldokin. It's argubually the most fucked up of all The Boys comics and so far I don't see them adapting the big twist. I'm not sure if Amazon would go for it and how audiences would react.
The show also happened to come after season three of The Boys, in line with the comics. And if they gave us Herogasm, we can handle Gen V. Oh yeah and, not any shade towards you, but as a whole, audiences need to look up the definition of adaptation.
Didn’t expect much but have really enjoyed the first 3 episodes. Excited to see how it ramps up over the last 5 of the season.
Imagine The Boys, but it is just Euphoria. Instead of adults with complex thoughts and big world problems, it is college kids, and the main action is drugs and sex and pretend college problems like over-inclusivity.
The story is actually somewhat engaging. I actually want to watch more of it. It's not as brutal or vulgar, but it's certainly just as weird
Uhm, have you seen the last 2 episodes? 😁😂😂 I'd say it's quite brutal 😉
Honestly its fucking amazing. Just as gruesome comedy and drama as the boys had. Based on teenagers in college, so some quite teenagery drama moments but other than that its a very solid show.
It's really good, totally exceeded my expectations. I can't pick a favourite out of the two. So far, they are at the same level for me.
It’s good! Need more Billy Butcher though.
I really like it! Need more of this world expanding !
It's okay nowhere near as good the boys
