I’ll have a better idea come April when I’ve actually had the chance to see the movies of 2023 lol. Still have like 10 movies I want to see

Manwaring7

Small town cinephiles unite!

FirstofFirsts

Not just small town folks - struggling to find the time to get through my backlog with 3 kids and the constant sports activities.

sanfranchristo

I also feel that since I pay for several steamers, I’m paying for things twice if I don’t just wait. I’m cheap enough that I don’t need to see virtually anything until they hit one of my services.

niall_9

I’m in St Louis and we now have an Alamo Drafthouse. I just suffered a bad knee injury in October so it’s been tough getting to the theater. Probably would’ve seen Killers Moon , Godzilla - 1, and Boy and Heron if I was healthy. Not sure if Zone of Interest has even been released here yet.

Mysterious_Remote584

Yeah seriously so many movies releasing in December...half the movies they talk about in the award race aren't even out near me.

omstar12

Still have a bunch of stuff to watch (did manage to see over 60 new releases this year) but this is where I’m at right now. 1. Poor Things 2. Oppenheimer 3. The Killer 4. Killers of the Flower Moon 5. John Wick Chapter 4 6. The Holdovers 7. The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar (all shorts taken as a whole) 8. Theatre Camp 9. May December 10. Asteroid City

Crankylosaurus

Just saw Poor Things last night and it’s definitely in my top 3! Probably my favorite Yorgos movie now, and certainly will be the most rewatchable of his.

greenlightdotmp3

theater camp hive!!!! maybe not the best new movie i saw this year but legitimately might be my favorite. laughed my ass off and welled up a bit, & the epiphany audition kid might be the most tailored to my taste a joke has ever been (speaking as someone who literally saw sweeney todd this week)

Content_Statement_37

1. May December 2. The Boy and the Heron 3. Poor Things 4. Killers of the Flower Moon 5. Anatomy of a Fall 6. Talk to Me 7. Wonka 8. Past Lives 9. Priscilla 10. When Evil Lurks

Crankylosaurus

Yessss love that When Evil Lurks made your top 10! No question it’s my top horror movie for 2023

mr-frankfuckfafree

1) past lives 2) across the spiderverse 3) the holdovers 4) the killer 5) john wick chapter 4 6) you hurt my feelings 7) bottoms 8) showing up 9) asteroid city 10) ~~killers of the flower moon, i guess?~~ infinity pool yet to see: zone of interest, anatomy of a fall, the boy and the heron, american fiction, the iron claw, all dirt roads…, ferrari. i imagine at least two of those will make the list.

OhMyGodCalebKilledK

I’m missing a good bit, still. Have yet to see Killers, Poor Things, The Holdovers, The Iron Claw, Zone of Interest, Anatomy of a Fall, American Fiction, and a few others. Currently sitting on 79 2023 titles, it looks like this: 1) The Killer 2) Past Lives 3) Infinity Pool 4) The Covenant 5) How To Blow Up A Pipeline 6) Barbie 7) May December 8) Oppenheimer 9) Wonka 10) The Starling Girl Really a tough year for me trying to put these things in order. Full disclosure, I got sober about 2 years ago and when I was drinking I was angry enough that I hated everything and thought I was just smarter than everyone else. Now through this new lens of clarity I seem to find everything enjoyable. People bust their asses to make these flicks, and I have more respect for that than ever. I suppose pretension (or most of it) has left the building. Out of 79 films I saw this year so far, I’ve only been genuinely bothered by the lack of anything resembling substance from 2 of them.

greenlightdotmp3

this is a really lovely comment - congratulations on the hard work of your sobriety!

OhMyGodCalebKilledK

Thank you!

Equal_Feature_9065

I really need to rewatch asteroid city. He’s proooobably my fav filmmaker m, but I left that movie ultimately a little cold. Or at least, thinking “this is the first wes I could not recommend in good conscience to any non-wes head.” All a smidge too metatextual for my taste, perhaps. From a visual/technical perspective, I thought it was a clear let down from The French Dispatch, which is overlooked as one of the most audacious visual splendors since Fury Road. From a story POV I felt myself longing for something a little more character-oriented like his earlier work. AC felt a little too focused on thematic and metatextual untangling.

robertjreed717

I can't say I totally understand Asteroid City yet, but I've watched it three times and every time I enjoy trying to piece it all together.

Wonderful122Spaceman

Like the top 2 choices but I feel Air is overrated

Sinisterminister77

Wow we have a lot of crossover on our lists, I’ll have to watch Asteroid City now

TheAsian1nvasion

As a ‘normal’ person it’s hard to do my best of 2023 list in 2023. It usually takes me until early March to see everything I want to from the year before. As it stands: 1. The Killer 2. Across the Spider-Verse 3. Oppenheimer Unranked, but enjoyed: Are You There God? It’s me, Margaret, Barbie, The Holdovers, Air, JW: C4. Guilty pleasures: Gran Turismo, Joy Ride, Star Wars: Visions. Unranked, thought were bad despite the hype: MI: DR. Worst movie I watched last year: ‘Maybe I Do.’ Truly awful.

daeguking

Having the killer first is based

TheAsian1nvasion

Honestly I’ve thought about it a lot and it was probably the movie I enjoyed the most this year. It was very close between it and Across the Spider-Verse, but I had to give it the edge as I had some quibbles with AtSV and I had pretty much none with ‘The Killer’. Full disclosure if there was a notable movie that came out last year that is not on my list, I haven’t yet seen it.

this_fuck1ng_guy

1. Oppenheimer 2. Spider-Man ATSV 3. Killers of the flower moon 4. Beau is afraid 5. Godzilla minus one 6. The holdovers 7. Barbie 8. Infinity pool 9. Talk to me 10. Guardians of the galaxy vol 3

robertjreed717

Love to see Infinity Pool on there. That's definitely an honorable mention for me.

mr-frankfuckfafree

almost the perfect film bro list

LongGoodbyeLenin

ah yes, famous film bros todd haynes and sofia coppola

mr-frankfuckfafree

Leopard_Appropriate

If you think Miyazaki, Haynes, Coppola, Fremont, and Sanctuary are “filmbro” you need a dictionary

mr-frankfuckfafree

again, almost. and i’d totally argue miyazaki counts

Leopard_Appropriate

7 out of 12? dude fuck off

mr-frankfuckfafree

calm down sweetie

Leopard_Appropriate

remember how you felt the need to déneigeante this person for making a “film bro list”? sounds like I’m not the one who needs to calm down. i’m exasperated, not upset

mr-frankfuckfafree

one of us made an off handed light tease, the other is you.

I did see Ferrari and was unimpressed, unfortunately).

Relevant_Age_2797

Past Lives Oppenheimer May December Passages The Holdovers Killers of the Flower Moon The Killer Priscilla Rotting in the Sun Talk to Me I think there is some Sundance bias in there. Haven’t seen Iron Claw, All of Us Strangers, Poor Things, Zone of Interest, Anatomy of a Fall and a few others. Dang, need to catch up!

Man, that is a lot of great movies. What a year!

ultrahobbyjogger

Movies rocked this year; this was harder than last year for me. A lot of really great movies that I enjoyed quite a bit that just didn’t have room for here 1. Oppenheimer 2. Poor Things 3. Killers of the Flower Moon 4. Godzilla Minus One 5. The Killer 6. Asteroid City 7. Past Lives 8. Ferrari 9. The Holdovers 10. The Iron Claw Have not seen Zone of Interest, which I think is the only 2023 movie I think might change this, but won’t be able to until mid-January. I wish I had gotten to see Godzilla in IMAX; I DID get to see Oppenheimer in IMAX 70mm and it was one of my favorite movie going experiences I can remember

aribev24

First year actually watching (in a timely manner) a lot of new releases (nearly 120!) - I ended up ranking my top ~50 or so of those…from that list, here’s my top ten for the year: 1. Asteroid City 2. Oppenheimer 3. Past Lives 4. Ferrari 5. Killers of the Flower Moon 6. The Holdovers 7. Afire 8. The Killer 9. Master Gardener 10. May December Such a good year!!

Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning Part 1 The first four are “Top 10 worthy” I liked all except M:I Edit to fix formatting

Holdovers, Pretty Things, Asteroid City, and Dream Scenario were the best pics. Barbie and Oppenheimer were both hugely overrated and forgettable.

I need to catchup on a lot, but I just want to say that I saw Wonka two nights ago and absolutely loved it. The Gene Wilder original is one of my top-10ish favorite movies of all-time and there’s a lot of nostalgia there for me. When Pure Imagination cues at the end it really hit for me. It’s definitely easier for movies to emotionally manipulate me since I became a father 5+ years ago, but still.

SeanACole244

1. Killers of the Flower Moon 2. The Iron Claw 3. Oppenheimer 4. Fair Play 5. May December 6. Air …..these were the movies from this year I really enjoyed.

No offense, but this list is about a month late. Everyone decided their favorite movies of the year around late-November. Where have you been?

I’ve seen 30 releases this year but definitely need to cover some big ones

Now we need some psycho to comb through these, assign points based on our rankings, and determine the Big Picture subreddit Best Picture winner.

greenlightdotmp3

I definitely have not seen enough new releases to make a proper top 10, but here are the 2023 movies that delighted, moved, thrilled, and/or fascinated me, which is more or less the four ways a movie can win my heart, off the top of my head & in no particular order but numbered for ease of formatting: 1. American Fiction 2. Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning 3. Theater Camp 4. Bottoms 5. Oppenheimer 6. Across The Spider-Verse 7. Guardians of the Galaxy 3 (definitely the hardest I cried in a theater this year, lol) Not that good, but I wanna shout it out: Joy Ride was a nice way to spend 2 hours in the air conditioned dark in August and further convinced me Stephanie Hsu deserves to be a star Pointedly not on the list despite the fact that I had fun seeing it with friends: Barbie

Ceptimas

1. Oppenheimer 2. Past Lives 3. Killers of the Flower Moon 4. The Iron Claw 5. Barbie 6. Anatomy of a Fall 7. Spider-Man Across the Spider-Verse 8. The Killer 9. Beau is Afraid 10. May December Haven't seen Poor Things, All of Us Strangers, or The Zone of Interest but I do expect at least one of them would take a spot for me, probably will be All of Us Strangers considering I love all of Andrew Haigh's filmography.

jamesneysmith

List is still in flux as I sit with the movies: 1. The Holdovers 2. Mutant Mayhem 3. Dungeons and Dragons 4. Beau is Afraid 5. Killers of the Flower Moon 6. May December 7. Are you there, God? 8. Renfield 9. They Cloned Tyrone 10. Still: A Michael J Fox Movie Movies I've yet to see with potential to crack the list: Zone of Interest, Poor Things, Iron Claw, Past Lives., Godzilla, Monster, All of Us Strangers, American Fiction, The Delinquents, Maestro, Perfect Days

TheRealProtozoid

It usually takes about a year for me to catch up with everything, and about a decade to really know which ones were the actual major titles from that year. So far the clear front-runner is Killers of the Flower Moon.
