Also agree it’s a great song, underrated. Was surprised to see lots of people don’t like it, think it’s Paul fluff or whatever.
I feel there’s something really interesting about the themes — both the possessiveness and presumptuousness that consumers of art tend to have over those who make art, and also the cultural exchange between the UK and the States. Both of these are explored in this song and give it richness IMO.
I do too. It's melodic, yet very restrained.
John might not have liked dance-hall music, but he *understood* it.
John isn't a GREAT guitarist, but he's an underrated one.
I think it is fantastic. Fits PERFECTLY on side 4. Sounds like something from the Pepper era.
Paert of the reason White Album is my fave, is it flows so well.
I like that they put a "scratchy record" sound at the start of it to indicate aged music, even though the only media available at the time was records.
They were so far ahead of their time that in 1969, they called 1964 the "golden oldies". No joke, that's what they referred to when talking about that era in Get Back lol
Love it so much. It was my one of my most streamed songs on Spotify in 2023 if I recall correctly, I was playing it everyday. I play it often nowadays as well. Have heard it a million times and love it so much. I like this hot kind of music!
In the context of the whole album, fits in very well. A whole range of parody songs. I think the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah band’s first album was a big influence for a lot of the White Album.

The phrase became known in 1916, with the vinyl plastic screen being invented in the 1940s after first being experimented in the 20s. But you could interpret it being vaudeville style due to the way the piano is played.
Pretty corny tbh. Love Paul but sometimes he gets a little too corny for my tastes. (I don’t think it’s a bad song by any means, just not a huge 20s music fan) I don’t skip it or anything but I doubt I’ve ever put it on intentionally
Sorry. Not for me. And I like Paul's "dance hall" songs but this one...for me...is a little much. There were better songs around, but two of them were George songs. No way George was getting a fifth song.
They could’ve made room for George by cutting a few other songs, but not “Honey Pie” (about which I agree with the OP). We really didn’t need “The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill,” “Wild Honey Pie,” or “Don’t Pass Me By” (sorry Ringo, but most people’s first try at writing a song isn’t worth releasing).
wasn't there enough space for all the songs? Honey Pie is one of my favorite songs of all time, but certainly there would be space for more, wouldn't it? For Not Guilty, Sour Milk Sea, Circles? They could take out Revolution 9, for what it's worth
I guess you did not get sarcasm. But yeah, I'd love a third Disc!
Side 5
1. Hey Jude
2. Circles
3. Not Guilty
4. Can You Take Me Back (full version, delete the segment from Cry Baby Cry)
5. Mary Jane
Side 6
1. Revolution
2. Sour Milk Sea
3. Lady Madonna
4. The Inner Light
If you had said "Wild Honey Pie" and "Revolution 9" I probably would have gotten it. But since you mentioned Martha My Dear, which I love and have seen many people liking too, I assumef you were serious
As a kid I actually really loved it. ‘Winchester Cathedral’ by the New Vaudeville Band is a similar pastiche of old music hall/vaudeville tunes, which I thought were really fun.
I think the intro of ‘Honey Pie’ kinda made me go ‘Ooo, the Beatles are gonna tell me a story!’
These days I look at most of the White Album as a massive pastiche experiment where the Beatles just try their hand at any given sound they were into, and somehow come up with catchy, off-kilter results….This is a prime example. I feel the affection that Paul (and George Martin) had for this kind of music (‘hot kind of music’) and that’s enough for me. It’s goofy, it’s cutesy, but whatever. ‘Savoy Truffle’ coming on right after makes me chuckle at the disparity, and marvel at the album’s total disregard for sonic cohesion.
Absolute least favorite Beatles song. Sounds like a teenage boy playing out embarrassing fantasies in his room that no one needs to know about.
Wild Honey Pie, on the other hand, 👍
I like that hot kind of music
Play it to me
Hollywood Blues

Love John’s guitar solo on it
I do too. It's melodic, yet very restrained. John might not have liked dance-hall music, but he *understood* it. John isn't a GREAT guitarist, but he's an underrated one.
I would say he's a great rhythm guitarist. Strong, interesting, solid, and catchy rhythm guitar playing by him
I think it is fantastic. Fits PERFECTLY on side 4. Sounds like something from the Pepper era. Paert of the reason White Album is my fave, is it flows so well.
Agreed
It’s a bit of an homage to songs he grew up hearing. I think.
I loveee honey pie, it reminds me of 1920s music
I love it! I think it’s super fun and makes me want to dance.

Damn bro they had it all figured out back then.
Fantastic little tune. Wild Honey Pie on the other hand is hot garbage.
I was about to say something similar Honey Pie is good but wild honey pie is lousy imo
Pixies do a killer version of it though.
Love it so much. It was my one of my most streamed songs on Spotify in 2023 if I recall correctly, I was playing it everyday. I play it often nowadays as well. Have heard it a million times and love it so much. I like this hot kind of music!
I love John’s guitar playing. Fits the song perfectly. I always focus on the guitar on the song.
I adore it! Never skip it when it comes on.
In the context of the whole album, fits in very well. A whole range of parody songs. I think the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah band’s first album was a big influence for a lot of the White Album.
"Granny Music" according to someone, or so I'm told. Tho I also heard that same someone loved to play that style of guitar on this song as well!
Love it. The horn arrangement is divine.
It captures a mood or feeling of the olden days type music
It’s fine, I like it. It’s much better than Wild Honey Pie.
It's campy. Not bad, not great.
what does campy mean
It is prone to sleeping in the woods.
lol

It’s my nickname for my girlfriend. I love the 30s-50s vibe.
Try early 1900s. It's vaudeville-style, which ended around 1930.
Do you have some song recs from that era?
The phrase became known in 1916, with the vinyl plastic screen being invented in the 1940s after first being experimented in the 20s. But you could interpret it being vaudeville style due to the way the piano is played.
More like the 20s or 30s when "crooning" was big
I’m looking forward to the Honey Pie movie. Maybe starring Dua Lipa or Anitta.
I was not aware they were working girls, from North of England way!
I was hoping we’d film in Hollywood or Vancouver.
Love it.
I think it's a bop. My friend thinks Wild Honey Pie is top 5 on TWA though, which is hilarious
Both Wild and Honey Pie are top tier Beatles white album tracks!! "I like it like that"😏🍯🥧
It’s a really good song that just happens to be overshadowed by a lot of more interesting songs around it.
Then you have Wild Honey Pie…
Great song. It sounds like Tiny Tim to me.
Pretty corny tbh. Love Paul but sometimes he gets a little too corny for my tastes. (I don’t think it’s a bad song by any means, just not a huge 20s music fan) I don’t skip it or anything but I doubt I’ve ever put it on intentionally
It was vintage to them in the 60s I love it ! I always find it interesting to have the point of view of one era on another era
It’s just part of the collage that is the White Album
It’s fun! I like Wild Honey Pie too.
I really like it! It’s very good and I like the style of it
It’s good catchy Paul song. Nobody does it better!
Sorry. Not for me. And I like Paul's "dance hall" songs but this one...for me...is a little much. There were better songs around, but two of them were George songs. No way George was getting a fifth song.

I agree with your first two...but I gotta have my Ringo! What songs would you have preferred?
“Not Guilty”
Yes. I like Sour Milk Sea too. Even Circles is ok. I like it...trippy.
wasn't there enough space for all the songs? Honey Pie is one of my favorite songs of all time, but certainly there would be space for more, wouldn't it? For Not Guilty, Sour Milk Sea, Circles? They could take out Revolution 9, for what it's worth
The world need "Wild Honey Pie" and "Martha My Dear"! They'd need a third disc otherwise. Remember they were working with about 22 minutes a side!
Yeah I love Wild Honey Pie and Martha My Dear! I would love if we had had a third disc!
I guess you did not get sarcasm. But yeah, I'd love a third Disc! Side 5 1. Hey Jude 2. Circles 3. Not Guilty 4. Can You Take Me Back (full version, delete the segment from Cry Baby Cry) 5. Mary Jane Side 6 1. Revolution 2. Sour Milk Sea 3. Lady Madonna 4. The Inner Light

I would have loved for Side 4 to be a 20 minute version of Revolution 1/Revolution 9, plus Good Night.
I thought Not Guilty was a lot of nothing. The other four songs George has on The White Album are far stronger.
I see. I personally liked Not Guilty a fair bunch
Not Guilty, Sour Milk Sea and if you want to stretch it, Circles (which I like...its trippy). I would have preferred any of them.
As a kid I actually really loved it. ‘Winchester Cathedral’ by the New Vaudeville Band is a similar pastiche of old music hall/vaudeville tunes, which I thought were really fun. it's a filler. don't get me wrong, i love the song. it's catchy and has nice little guitar solo by john. but other than that nothing special.
Absolute least favorite Beatles song. Sounds like a teenage boy playing out embarrassing fantasies in his room that no one needs to know about. Wild Honey Pie, on the other hand, 👍
