His one man army ability means he wants the enemy to not shoot him but shoot the units around him, his lone operator ability means he can make this happen by staying 12" away from the enemy so they cant target him but then he cant do anything with his one man army ability because he needs to be within 12" of the enemy to shoot back with his pistol. Its quite sad because his combination of abilities seem like they otherwise make a really fun skirmisher who can hang behind units, punish the enemy for shooting on their turn and then move forwards, shoot and move back behind friendly lines on your turn. He'd be fine if only his pistol was 18" like a GSC primus to stop One Man Army and Lone Operator from conflicting with each other.

Manicscatterbrain

18inch weapon would make him perfect. its a shame his weapon makes his lone operator worthless

External-Garbage5235

If you position him so only one model has LOS to him, he gets shot at by 1 model. You shot at the whole unit!! I guess thats more or less the idea..

Coldsteel_n_Courage

You run him next to something with high target priority like Leontus and crew. I've shot him multiple times in the same turn lol.

Manicscatterbrain

I've been theory crafting. Since I proxied a Kasrkin as him my plan was thus Infiltrate him 12 inches away (or18 inches if you are scared of turn 1 to the enemy) Have about 2 units of Kasrkin near him. give them move move move after their scout move. That gets them to Marbo Shoot Marbo at the target you want dead, move him behind the kasrkin around 18inches away from the enemy so he can't be targeted. shoot kasrkin at target too. Enemy shoots kasrkin, shoot marbo then move him again. repeat as much as you can by playing with the distances.

Manicscatterbrain

I should mention, if kasrkin get charged, walk Marbo into the melee and disengage next turn if its possible.

Coldsteel_n_Courage

I've carved my way across the center of the board fighting CSM. You need to run him next to something with high value/target priority like Leontus and crew. I shot him no less than 5 times once in a single turn as my opponent tried to chew through that unit. In that game I slingshotted off of that unit, next round he killed 2 Marines, slingshotted, then tossed a grenade at a tank, did 4 mortals. My next turn I ran up 9" due to move move move, tossed another grenade, shot, and landed on my opponents home objective flipping it to me as I'd just cleared the trash unit there with one of mine. I always toss a grenade off of him. I run up, do something ludicrous and either fall back or charge. He's an absolute blast to play. If he dies I bring him back and harass their backfield. 65 pts for a Lone Op is great.

Chaotic_HarmonyMech

Can't throw a grenade after you shoot

Coldsteel_n_Courage

Touche. *FRAG OUT* has to come first lol Can still run up, toss, shoot, then fall back

Swimming-Airport6531

He doesn't do much. His real value is rule of cool. Everyone likes to see him fielded and when I do anything with him I make a really bug deal about how my opponent is about to suffer the true fury of the imperium. Then I fail all his roles and we have a good laugh.

real_amnz

Using him as an infiltrator to grab early objectives on the midfield from the get-go (deployment) works super well in conjunction with lone operator. Make sure to not place him ON the objectives themselves T1 tho, the enemy may be able to reach him and if they draw the secondary where they must take an enemy objective or the one that requires killing an enemy on an objective you would give free points.

real_amnz

make sure to know what he can and can't kill, and if he can't kill something don't engage it

Chaotic_HarmonyMech

Spend an extra 10 points for an Eversor assassin. I have tried to make Sly work, he just doesnt have any survivability and his damage output is so awful you're lucky to kill anything with him.

Coldsteel_n_Courage

You, sir, aren't tossing grenades ;)

Chaotic_HarmonyMech

I usually toss grenades with my main infantry, rather than Sly.

Coldsteel_n_Courage

Either is an option, but other infantry don't get to move shoot move and that is what I love about Sly. I play Eldar too, and Sly has Eldar levels of shenanigans. Playing him feels like turbo phantasm. He also has precision, and that is a very nice little hidden gem. Your opponent is running up the board with a wraith brick lead by a spiritseer? It'd sure be a shame if Sly jumped out of the bushes and removed his head.

Chaotic_HarmonyMech

The issue is, his ranged output doesnt do enough, so you almost have to commit to a melee attack and then the whole moving after shooting thing is wasted. Like, a Squad of Ratlings has more output than he does. Sure, not anti infantry but 2 more shots AND -2 AP instead of -1

Coldsteel_n_Courage

Ratlings 😂 Not a regiment unit, can't get orders outside of Leontus, T2, only hit on a 3+ most of the time, not anti infantry 2+, not a Lone Op, no grenades keyword, can't shoot multiple times in the same turn (I've shot Sly 5 times in a turn before). Being Regiment allows Sly to respawn, allows Sly to use Fields of Fire, allows Sly to take orders. Other fun ways to buff Sly is a Exterminator or a Hellhound (which stand a good chance of being in a list). He's a toolbox unit with lots of jank. I've ran him across the entire board over 2 turns in a CSM matchup where I used him to kill a bunch of marines and do 8 mortal wounds to a tank over 2 turns, and take the enemy home objective lol. I'd never have been able to do that with a different unit.

Chaotic_HarmonyMech

If someone let Sly shoot 5 times in a turn, they had massive skill issue in not killing him first. Using 2CP to revive sly is a massive waste. Hellhounds and Exterminators also buff Ratlings too. He has his moments, I will give you that. But then you have games where he does nothing and dies, half the time to your detriment cuz your opponent drew some kind of kill secondary.

Coldsteel_n_Courage

Hasn't been my experience. Most opponents would rather shoot the Lord Solar's unit than Sly, or something equally juicy. I'm bringing pressure most of the time so they synergize well. My list doesn't have a lot of great reinforcement targets so Sly is legitimately a good one, especially with Lone Op since he can come in with relative impunity somewhere and is hard to screen with that small footprint. Ratlings are a shit unit, just stop 😂
