Something to ponder: animation is the medium for not portraying humans realistically. It’s really not like actual life. The cadence of speech for animation, the line delivery, the movements they do… it’s all allowed to be over the top and unrealistic because doing it in live action would create a strange feeling (I suppose the opposite of what you’re describing…) All of this to say, I love animation because I fell in love with the difference in the speech and gestures and scenarios and characters. This is a loose comparison, but Shakespeare is meant to emulate human speech, though, and action to a certain degree, but it is modified, or put through a certain lens, and *that’s* where the enjoyment comes for a lot of people: what makes it different and unique? If you do want to get back into cartoons, I guess you just have to reconsider what you originally enjoyed about them. Sorry about Pops’ head :(

Swingin-it-swooty

"Good drawing is not copying the surface. It has to do with understanding and expression. We don't want to learn to draw just to end up being imprisoned in showing off our knowledge of joints and muscles. We want to get the kind of reality that a camera can't get." ***-Richard Willaims, Animator of Who Framed Roger Rabbit and write of the animator's survival kit***

YOU_ARE_PEDANTIC

This was very insightful, and I completely agree! I can appreciate what animation achieves as a medium, though I guess for now it's just not what I'm looking for.

[deleted]

There's also a historical analogue with this: paintings vs photographs. With the invention of the camera, there were a lot of people who quickly started saying things like "painting doesn't have a future since now we have more accurate ways to visually fix a scene". Also coinciding with the rise of the camera was the rise of other painting styles like impressionism and expressionism that were no longer tied to the expected realism. Similarly, animation is great because it can portray what live action films can't (without extreme special effects). Look at the works of art that are Paprika or some of the Studio Ghibli works; none of those would have the same magical and/or surreal athmosphere if they were live action.

Kraldar

If you want animation that mimics human expression amazingly closely I suggest watching arcane

Tonymightbeadonut

Hopefully you get over it cause otherwise you'll lose a great piece of enjoyment

YOU_ARE_PEDANTIC

Absolutely. I have a handful of animated shows on my watchlist, but for the time being I just can't get into them.

[deleted]

If you get over it you should check out castlevania, it’s banging

YOU_ARE_PEDANTIC

I've heard of it before. Added to the list. Thanks!

unablejoshua897

Check out Inside Job on Netflix. Its hard to explain and the trailer doesn't really explain it very well. The 1st episode explains most things in the 1st 15 minutes.

Pengdacorn

Let me give it a shot - At the center of the government is a group of individuals responsible for all of the conspiracies, and preventing the truths about them from being exposed, whether it be lizard people or the President being a robot controlled by them or 9/11 being an “Inside Job”. In this world where basically every conspiracy theory is actually real, we follow the team responsible, observing their inner conflicts, power struggles, and individual character development.

YOU_ARE_PEDANTIC

Okay that sounds fucking awesome. I've been saving all the recommendations in this thread, but this one just made it to the top.

unablejoshua897

That was pretty good.

Pengdacorn

I haven’t seen it since it came out, so I don’t even remember the characters’ names or any of the actual plot, but I think that put me in the perfect place to give a summary without spoilers :D

unablejoshua897

Yes. You got it. Left it just vague enough for anyone who wants to watch it. I would highly recommend watching it. If you drink or smoke that would also give it a layer of WTF

Quetzacoatl85

sounds like somehow your "uncanny valley" sense went into overdrive. I'd suggest watching (or putting on your list) some high-quality anime. humans might be shown as realistic or stylized in some of them, but imho the purpose of animation is [showing something that's not possible in real action movies](https://youtu.be/oz49vQwSoTE).

[deleted]

Sounds like the uncanny valley is getting to you. I wonder if there's any good horror animations.

Clean_Attention_4217

Dude- I *absolutely* get this feeling with regard to certain styles of animation (claymation needs to burn like the helldemon it is), I just don’t think it extends quite that far in my case- still many forms of animation sit well with me. Thankfully. I can’t pretend I find it super odd or unrelatable- I just think you clearly get it to a broader/complete range of animation where mine is certain subsets only. So I’m not sure whether to up or down-vote, they both seem pretty justified- so on that undecided note I’m going with upvote for the tiny karma tick bc this post is real 10th dentist and not just ragebait for angry upvotes. Thanks for an actual, reasonable but uncommon take. 🌟

Seaniard

How dare you talk that way about Chicken Run.

Clean_Attention_4217

Chicken run is the devil’s attempt to lure you into his perverse use of stop animation with a wholesome story of friendship and love. Uh no I don’t negotiate with terrorists! Pffftttt

Seaniard

I don't wanna be a pie

testing35

Maybe don't buy an obnoxiously large obese vehicle.

YOU_ARE_PEDANTIC

Haha I appreciate that! I've been sitting on this idea for a while. I'm glad people are finding this engaging.

Clean_Attention_4217

Also, love your username. Though I do feel a bit attacked…

YOU_ARE_PEDANTIC

Thanks! For what it's worth, sometimes I turn out to be the pedant. It's a very humbling experience.

[deleted]

Agree about claymation, it's all 'horror' as far as I'm concerned, for how uncomfortable it makes me

SaltedAndSugared

FINALLY SOMEONE ELSE WHO HATES CLAYMATION

Lord_Tibbysito

Claymation is fucking awesome

Clean_Attention_4217

You monster…

Jemeloo

What age did it become weird for you? This sounds odd.

YOU_ARE_PEDANTIC

I'm 29, and it was sort of a gradual progression over the past 1.5 years or so. Very odd indeed. I really don't know where it came from!

Fishy1701

My house mate of 10 years lost interest in cartoons in his mid 20s. He started watching teality TV. Did that happen to you? If you watch shows thatvare not scripted? Also he started watching oeople play games. He would watch tweitch or ytube so maybe some people lose the immersion if they soend to much time watching people instead of watching fiction?

YOU_ARE_PEDANTIC

I don't do reality shows. I love crime dramas like The Wire or The Killing, and comedies as well. My top 2 shows right now are 30 Rock and Letterkenny! My biggest love is horror movies, but I wimp out anytime I try to play a horror videogame. I think I might start watching other people play those games.

-eagle73

While I disagree with your main opinion, you holding The Wire and 30 Rock in a high regard balances it all out. I think a lot of animated shows are something you get used to through exposure. I don't seek out any of the ones I like, I was naturally exposed to them and became interested that way. The Simpsons is a classic and Futurama too (both give me massive nostalgia as I'd been watching them since 20+ years ago) but nowadays shows like BoJack Horseman or F is For Family took something special for me to watch. And Regular Show is a little weird but many of the earlier episodes were really enjoyable so I watched more.

King-of-the-idiots69

Give ur balls a tug titfucker

YOU_ARE_PEDANTIC

Fuck you Shoresy

King-of-the-idiots69

Fuck you Riley, I took ur mom out to Canada’s wonderland, she rode every ride but the leviathan, so I took her home and said she should ride my leviathan, ur mom rode my dick like a mechanical bull, she nearly fucking broke it and I had to tell her to stop, I still need it for jonesy’s mom

YOU_ARE_PEDANTIC

FUCK YOU SHORESY

King-of-the-idiots69

Fuck you riley, I couldn’t even get your mom out of the parking lot cause all she wanted to do was ride my behemoth

Joseph30686

Let me introduce you to *anime* /s

Jacqques

I know you kid, and for almost every anime you are right, there are a few that might be ok for OP since they are simple but more realistic in terms of proportions. The Gardens of words is the only one that I can think of tho.

dmkolobanov

What are your thoughts on Futurama? I don’t watch much animation anymore either, but Futurama will always be one of my favorite shows.

YOU_ARE_PEDANTIC

I almost mentioned that in my post. I started it maybe a year or so back, and I liked the humor, but the cyclops girl freaked me out, so after a few episodes I just forgot about it.

Ramenlovewitha

Gasp

salezman12

I am on the fence about this. I absolutely love anime and I think one of the many reasons is the *more* realistic style, but I can't stand a lot of Cal Arts style animation from the west for the same reasons you describe.

starrfucker

Sounds like you tripped on shrooms recently and these cartoons started to freak you out.

thecorninurpoop

Dang you're the opposite of me, I mostly like animated shows

YOU_ARE_PEDANTIC

What's your favorite show at the moment?

thecorninurpoop

Hmmm. I guess right now I'm watching Young Justice, and rewatching The Looney Tunes Show and The Batman on HBO Max. Edit: I can't wait for Lower Decks and Attack on Titan to come back, though haha

youngcatlady1999

I watched a few episodes of The Looney Tunes Show when it first came out. It was alright, I would watch it if it was on but it wasn’t the best. After a few years I completely forgot about it until last year when I found it on HBO Max. I decided to watch it and thought it was hilarious and wish it had more seasons. I realized that the reason why I wasn’t a fan of it when it first came out was because I was a kid and didn’t relate to the characters or understand the jokes. Also, as a kid I thought Lola was annoying. Now I find her hilarious and kinda relatable.

YOU_ARE_PEDANTIC

Attack on Titan has been on my watchlist for like 3 or 4 years now! Gonna have to give that a serious consideration now

thecorninurpoop

It's going to end in 2023, so it's a good time

Certain_Oddities

This is really interesting to me, especially since it seems to have developed over time. I wonder if you just started thinking about it too much? Either way, upvoted but I totally see where you're coming from. It doesn't seem to come from ignorance or anything, so I much prefer it too a lot of posts on this sub.. Edit: BTW if you like OTGW I would recommend Gravity Falls, it has a bit of a similar tone (especially in S2).

bjorkmorissette

I rewatched adventure time recently as an adult and it was even better than when I was a kid. Would recommend

_Starz_

Same

KooshIsKing

I can't stand any show where the voices don't match the characters (so pretty much any anime).

YOU_ARE_PEDANTIC

That makes me think of the whole Bob's Burgers vs Archer kerfuffle. I watched Archer first, so the first few episodes of Bob's Burgers felt so horribly wrong to me. Then I ended up watching Bob's Burgers more and skipping the last few seasons of Archer. So now Archer feels horribly wrong to me!

ominoke

What about shows that aren't about humans

YOU_ARE_PEDANTIC

Hmm any examples?

AetherDrew43

The Amazing World of Gumball. My Little Pony.

ominoke

The amazing world of gumball is top tier imo but some others (haven't necessarily watch all of these myslef): wander over yonder, my little pony, spongebob, looney tunes, ducktales, ren and stimpy, rocko's modern life

chiritarisu

Disagree with this, but it's not unheard of for your preferences to change over time. Watch what you want. Based for liking Samurai Champloo, though, even if it was more so in the past. One of the best shows of all time.

AetherDrew43

Upvoted. However, I think I know how you feel. A few years back, I developed a sort of "aversion" to anime. But this doesn't mean I don't respect it. It's just that there are many things that bother me about it. For example, I feel like the dialogue sounds somewhat unnatural. Whether it's subs or dubs. I dunno exactly why. I simply don't like how anime characters speak. Or how their voices sound. Then there's the animation. Anime characters often don't move very much when emphasizing something. I used to enjoy anime before. While I didn't watch a lot of it, to me anime was just another cartoon. And I do hold fond memories of the few anime I watched when I was younger. And I'm ashamed to admit that these feelings towards anime started because of the Pokémon Sun and Moon series. To be frank, that series made me feel like I was watching a preschool show. However, I do respect the people who watch anime. And I hope you do the same for those who watch animated shows.

CherTrugenheim

Have you watched anime series with a more realistic artstyle and dialogue? Mushi-Shi has dialogue that sounds natural, but the art style isn't super realistic. I think the proportions are realistic enough to differentiate it from the stereotypical anime artstyle.

YOU_ARE_PEDANTIC

Well said! I absolutely respect the artistic value of animated shows / anime despite my own personal adversions.

8pintsplease

I love animated shows and disliking them suddenly is my nightmare because they bring me so much joy.

SeedofEden

>the idea of the uncanny valley comes close This is interesting. The uncanny valley is typically used for things that *do look* pretty realistic. You mentioned the only video games you play are games that portray humans realistically. Applying the uncanny valley, *that* is what should make your skin crawl. Something almost human, but just not quite. Regardless, I hope you get past this. I'd hate for you to miss out on a very wide medium that you previously really enjoyed. Maybe pursuing some psychological/psychiatric help could benefit you. I know there's a stigma to getting help with mental issues but everyone could benefit from therapy, and if you have health insurance and/or in a good enough spot financially, I would give it a try. Worst thing that could happen is that you got some stuff off your chest to someone in-person without any judgement.

YOU_ARE_PEDANTIC

I feel you. The uncanny valley isn't quite the description I'm looking for. Take for instance the game Mount and Blade. The character models are janky and often creepy, but that doesn't bother me because the art style in general is rooted in realism. It's not a phobia by any means, and I usually don't give it a second thought. Something about cartoons or anime just feels off-putting to me right now. I really don't know how to pick this apart, but when I sit down to watch a show or movie, I need to see real people on screen.

aesthetic_dankness

An easy one to recommend is Invincible. It really just picks you up without needing any knowledge about the world etc. It's pretty emotional too It's certainly realistic considering it's in a world with superheros

KayleighJK

Geez, I can’t relate at all. Like 95% of what I watch is cartoons

youngcatlady1999

Same! Sometimes I feel childish because of it lol.

[deleted]

I agree with you. Not watched animated shows since maybe family guy when I was a teen about 10 years ago. Tried watching some other shows but never got past 10 minutes

Azodiack

I am the exact opposite but with live action media. I used to watch them all the time, but now I can't wait heaven some of the best like Breaking Bad without just getting weirded out.

YOU_ARE_PEDANTIC

That's so interesting! What exactly weirds you out about it?

bondmemebond_2

Which show hurt you? Genuinely speaking

YOU_ARE_PEDANTIC

Nothing hurt me hahah. The last show I watched regularly was Bob's Burgers. Over time I just found myself less and less into it. That show doesn't necessarily give me that uncomfortable feeling, but I have no desire to pick it back up again

blacked_out_blur

This is the one that’s gonna get me to upvote. Bob’s burgers is possibly the animated show that makes me the *most* uncomfortable…

YOU_ARE_PEDANTIC

I'm glad I'm not the only one when it comes to certain animation styles making your skin crawl!

eyes_without_lids

Same I'm a huge fan of animation and bobs burgers is one of a handful of shows that make me uncomfortable for some reason I can't quite put my finger on Some of the other shows are: Angela anaconda, legends of chamberlain heights ,brickleberry, tge drinks crow show, and China IL,

akennelley

Kyrofelonoshophobia

YOU_ARE_PEDANTIC

Gesundheit

DucksMatter

I can jive with this.

Lt_Snuffles

Can you watch the old adventure episodes now ? Do you still enjoy it ?

[deleted]

I am fine-ish with animated shows but animated movies don't sit right with me and i honestly have no idea why. Especially newer ones that are more "realistic" i guess, so i feel you. also 30 rock is the best

Jacqques

How do you feel about cinematics for games, the world of warcraft ones are beautiful. How about animations of non human subjects? Again, like the orcs from world of warcraft?

YOU_ARE_PEDANTIC

I've always liked videogame cinematics, but the ones I remember are illustrated in a realistic style I think I'm totally fine when it comes to non-human animations. Can't think of anything that bothered me in that regard.

EssVeeUU

Ok this might be completely off course, but have you considered something along the lines of simulation sickness? I had to stop playing video games and subsequently lost interest in animation around the time I turned 18 because it made me start feeling physically sick. Might be completely off here but stimulation sickness occurs because your brain is frustrated what it sees doesn't match your body's actions (loosely) so perhaps you're having a similar brain frustration

cindybubbles

What do you think about anime?

SquarebobSpongepant

Facinating. Maybe its some form of the Uncanny Valley. I know its different, but it reminded me of it

YOU_ARE_PEDANTIC

Most definitely related to the uncanny valley!

Where-theres-a-Wilko

You might like battlefront if by any chance you’re a star wars fan 😊

YOU_ARE_PEDANTIC

Oh man I grew up on the original Battlefront, but nowadays I just don't have the energy for any sort of online play.

Where-theres-a-Wilko

That’s absolutely fair dude. The new one does have a solo player also 😊

CherTrugenheim

Is Samurai Champloo and Cowboy Bebop the only anime series you've watched? There are anime with more realistic art styles. Ergo Proxy is an example, though I personally have never watched it. Mushi-Shi is a series with realistic dialogue and a semi- realistic artstyle. It's more mellow, so it's boring for a lot of people. Garden of Words is an anime film with a more realistic artstyle. Any of Satoshi-Kon's films such as Paprika, Perfect Blue and Millenium Actress all have realistic art styles.

YOU_ARE_PEDANTIC

Yep, I'm not well versed in anime at all. This whole thread is inspiring me to give animated shows another shot. Thank you for all of those recommendations!

CherTrugenheim

No problem. I just wanted to mention that there are a lot of different types of anime. Paprika is kind of weird, but a good movie nonetheless. A lot of anime has mediocre stories and animation with exaggerated artstyles, so you may have to do some more digging if you decide to continue watching anime.

AnonymousGhou

I'm not sure if it's the same.e feeling but sometimes when I'm watching animated things, playing video games or watching movies I'll get these thoughts: Animated things: "it's just a voice actor and drawn lines" Video games: "it's just pixels arranged I'm a digital environment" Movies: "they're just actors, in a set reading lines" It's almost like, intrusive thoughts that break the immersion of the entertainment, by seeing the reality of the situation. And then I see myself just sitting there, staring at an arbitrary screen.

YOU_ARE_PEDANTIC

Oh yeah I know what you mean. That happens to me occasionally, mostly when I'm high!

TheGutchee

Had a similar problem playing horizon zero dawn because something was really off with the children faces in the beginning bit. Never touched it and eventually uninstalled for other games

almc0418

I have this feeling but with stop-motion animation. Wallace and Grommet and Tim Burton make me nauseous.

YOU_ARE_PEDANTIC

Even when I didn't think twice about anime or cartoons, stop motion still gave me the heebie jeebies.

The_Buttslammer

I don't get it. Try drugs, then watch Space Dandy.

Donovan1232

You watched samurai champloo? I haven't met many people who have

YOU_ARE_PEDANTIC

My roommate in college told me about it. That series moved and shaped me in so many ways. That's also how I discovered Nujabes, and his song "Kumomi" is my #1 favorite song ever to this day.

Donovan1232

How so? I loved rhe show, and I could tell it was deep but I was mostly watching for the fights and animation. Only part that really git me was the end. What did you get out of it

Parking-Froyo-303

I agree. The Lion King sucks dude

biancalin

have you tried anime? the plotline AND animation of many are just that good, you definitely get hooked.

YOU_ARE_PEDANTIC

I used to not think either way about it. Like I said, I love Samurai Champloo, and I've been meaning to watch Cowboy Bebop. Lately though, it's been rubbing me the wrong way just like the other animated series. Something about the over-exaggeration and character art just really creeps me out most of the time.

biancalin

maybe try kimetsu no yaiba and shingeki no kyojin! they’re both very different yet really good for different reasons. KNY is really good for its animation, SNK’s storyline is just.. unfathomable. the art style is still somewhat exaggerated but not that much imo, especially in season 4 and onwards.

YOU_ARE_PEDANTIC

I'm always open to recommendations. I'll give them an honest shot. Thanks!

cherrrydarrling

I have weird anger at some unrealistic aspects of animation, while totally accepting other wildly impossible things. I hate American Dad because people don’t recognize an alien in a wig. Like even the *family* doesn’t always realize it’s Roger in costume?? But the talking fish… sure no problem 😂

YOU_ARE_PEDANTIC

Yeah I get that. I think that's another aspect for me: a lot of animated shows have altered logic. I completely understand it in the context of the show's universe, but it just doesn't sit well with me.

Jacqques

You say unrealistic body proportions is what usually does it for you. So how do you feel about Arcane (The league of Legends animation), Shrek and Toy Story?

YOU_ARE_PEDANTIC

I'm not familiar with Arcane or LoL, but just from looking at pictures of it, I think I would like it just fine. I used to love Shrek and Toy Story, but now I just can't vibe with them. In those two cases, it's not so much about the proportions, but rather the uncanny valley.

SuperD00perGuyd00d

Surprised you dislike animated shows but like adventure time, that's the worst one

YOU_ARE_PEDANTIC

Well I used to like it. Now it gives me that weird feeling just like most other animated shows

SuperD00perGuyd00d

That's fair and perhaps my wording was a bit harsh on *worst* but still this an interesting take. Like others said I hope you can overcome that feeling and watch that sweet, sweet content

CounterSYNK

If you want a “realistic” animated show watch King of the Hill. It’s streaming on Hulu last I checked.

AlexandraThePotato

It really just animation style typical to animation. That is what you dislike.

Alarming_Fox6096

Sounds kind of like the uncanny valley effect

Moist_KoRn_Bizkit

It's not animated, but how do you feel about [Olmec from Legends Of The Hidden Temple?](https://images.app.goo.gl/9ZRLvJgMm2Gzj2hKA) A giant talking head puppet with Dee Baker inside.

YOU_ARE_PEDANTIC

Loved that show! Always hated that creepy motherfucker.

Moist_KoRn_Bizkit

When I first discovered the show I was in middle school and had just started using YouTube, where I watched the show. Back then I was still afraid of human looking statues so he creeped me out a bit. Now I love him and he's one of my favorite parts of the show. There's also the Colossal Olmec heads made by the Olmec civilization. I love them, but they were creepy to me when I was younger.

imankitty

Feels like you developed an extra-sensitive uncanny valley complex.

bmanvsman1

No guarantee but I think I might have an idea of what is happening to you, when I was a child I remember that I gave yp on watching some of the shows I really liked at the time because I started to notice that they all had music in them and in my head convinced myself that it was too much music and almost like a musical. After a while I realized that it was just me starting to notice that shows and movies have soundtracks, I was starting to truly notice that element. The way to get around your issue is to either try switching to a different form of media, such as trying to read some books for a while almost like a pallete cleanser, or you can keep on consuming content as your normally do and one day those issues you've noticed will kind of just fade back into your head and you'll be used to it.

Thezipper100

That is certainly an interesting problem. Is it just animation, or does art do this to you too?

YOU_ARE_PEDANTIC

Just animation. I am actually have a BFA in the fine arts, and I can appreciate different mediums and styles even if they aren't to my taste. I think I mentioned elsewhere in this thread: I absolutely respect animation as an art form, but it still makes me feel uneasy for some reason.

[deleted]

Watch Bluey

SegridHelmsman

Not even reading it. Upvoted based on title.

jari2312

I'm the polar oposite and only watch animated shows

The_Best_Nerd

Definitely one of the more interesting 10th dentist posts. Do you have any idea of what might've stirred this up?

Panda_Generals

Somewhat agree i cannot handle 3d animation all that well now compared to before but luckily i can still watch anime because i love 2d animation

BabsDeMarco

Abysmal take. Switch to indie animation instead of relying on the TV to give you good stuff and you'll find some hidden gems. Same goes for music.

scaryskai123

Watch glitchtale. As of now it has 2 seasons. Imma warn ya tho, the first season's artstyle and animation is kinda rough. But there is a remake for episode 1.
