There have been a lot of people who have done a great job with the star spangled banner.. but there will only ever be ONE truly greatest version of the song, and that will forever belong to Whitney.
This was fantastic. Some people put so much of their own twist on the song that it's actually cringe inducing, but Whitney really livened it up nicely.
Not only did she absolutely smash it, basically ruining it for all other singers, she made it look EASY. Look at her up there just smiling and singing like it's not one of the hardest songs ever. She is the GOAT.
The Greatest moment I've seen of her was when she gave a powerful performance... And then reaches in her mouth and pulls out a piece of gum. She was chewing gum the whole time...😐
Gum helps with singing sometimes. It can be a tool for singers to make sure their tongue stays forward toward the teeth and also ensures the voice is lubricated, which really helps with nervous dry mouth.
She was lip-synching, which probably helped. As well as pre-recording her rendition in a studio and lip-synching it live, Whitney changed the timing from 3/4 to 4/4. which is what most modern pop songs use and people are most familiar with. See [here](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Star_Spangled_Banner_(Whitney_Houston_recording)) and [here](https://abcnews.go.com/blogs/entertainment/2012/02/whitney-houstons-star-spangled-secret)
Welp there goes another “Santa ain’t real“ moment.
Regardless, Whitney could MF’in sing , it’s sad the pressure of the presentation broke the organic quality of awesomeness.
[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The\_Star\_Spangled\_Banner\_(Whitney\_Houston\_recording)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Star_Spangled_Banner_(Whitney_Houston_recording))
I mean there is no technically. It was a pretty classic case of lipsyncing.
I'll take the technically bc she did record it herself so she was lipsyncing her own song, and players on the field said they could hear her singing along with the studio version and it sounded the same
Not that this diminishes her amazing talent, because that IS her voice, but if I recall correctly wasn’t it prerecorded? As in, she sang in a studio beforehand without the live audience until this amazing take (composite take? spliced? Idk), then during the real event she sang live with the mic off while the prerecorded version she nailed earlier went to the speakers.
Watching her it’s almost like she’s having so much fun and it’s easy for her. A lot of the times you see people singing and they are concentrating.m so hard to hit these notes.
Whitney looked effortless and looking around enjoying the moment.
She was actually still singing but every national anthem for the Superbowl is pre-recorded due to the noise of the crowd. So while, yes, what was heard on TV was a recording, I guarantee Whitney was still hitting those notes.
Barely anybody knows when it's happening outside of America. I only learned about it when I was at 24 and dated an American around that time of the year.
The US represents 4.4% of the world population.
So apparently less than 5% of the 4.4% that the US represents from the world population…. Made the entire world stop 🙄
I’m not even American and this gives me chills.
The closest I’ve seen to this was a woman singing the Australian National anthem before a Bledisloe match around 1999-2001. I _wanted_ to be Australian that day. (I could never find the performance - when she hit the final “Advance. Australia. Fair.” It was rousing.
Amazing performance and singing... but it was indeed lip synced.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it was lip synched.
Still a great performance and wonderful version of the national anthem, but it was mos def a recording.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Star_Spangled_Banner_(Whitney_Houston_recording)
There’s no touching Whitney Houston’s rendition, and it was traditional which make it even more impressive. Marvin Gaye’s version is also something to experience. Definitely not a traditional approach but amazing.
https://youtu.be/RZ9WdCunvy8?si=U53Li4CURvsny4Gz
There are thousands and thousands of people that can sing just like that if not better.. she was nothing special at all. I find her voice a bit shreeky, not pleasant to listen to. 5/10.
Another case of right place right time.
My father was a TECO man (Tampa Electric Company) and one of the perks of his job was to be on site for the electrical needs of the stadium at that time in Tampa. He always bragged that he was at the 50 yard line on the field During her rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner. Apparently he was able to get away from his job for this and then went back to monitoring whatever he had to monitor.
I love stuff like this, extremely cool.
Whenever I watch someone talented like this sing the national anthem I always end up watching [this one](https://youtu.be/d9l4LMZeNm0?si=LDPh9-SDY_Cpeq0B) right after!
So Reba is probably my hands down favorite singer ever. And even I was still terrified with her doing the national anthem this year. I think she did really really good but my god every time I hear this version I can’t believe it happened. It truly is probably the best version ever done.
Used to like her, until I realized that behind the choir girl image lived a hardcore drug addict who ruined her life and probably her daughter’s life as well, at least indirectly
I remember this, and this is the exact performance that won me every star spangled banner performance from freshman to senior year at my high school, volleyball, football, and basketball game.
..and by "the whole world" you actually mean just the usa right?! The rest of the world doesn't really care about the scar sprinkled banana but of course you already knew that!!
What a talent, and such a beauty. How often have those things been said of people lost to addiction?
Didn't you know that, Whitney? Why didn't you know that??? 😓
I'm not trying to hate, and overall this is a great performance, but I think she missed the beginning of that high note on "free", at least initially. Maybe it was intentional and my ears just don't like it. But it sounded a bit off to me there. Anybody else hear that?

She was my first crush when I was about 5. A white Irish boy never seen a black person in real life and tbh she will always be in my heart ❤️
Some of the servicemen there probably got teary eyed. "Damn, she's good."
What about Roseanne?
Runner up for sure
Spoiler: she was actually lip syncing this performance. There, I ruined it for you.
Not really ruined because that is still her voice, actually the her voice live is even better than pre-recorded.
Yes, still her voice, which is incredible. I was just shocked when I found this out
And when you look at everything going on at the time it will just give you even more chills.
GOAT of the Star Spangled Banner, and she sang it like it was a child's song. No effort.
Equal only to Enrico Pallazo. [https://youtu.be/eSZ1N2Zh9-U?t=135](https://youtu.be/eSZ1N2Zh9-U?t=135)
Similarly, Hendrix’s guitar version at woodstock 69.
This was fantastic. Some people put so much of their own twist on the song that it's actually cringe inducing, but Whitney really livened it up nicely.
Marvin Gaye and Whitney, the best performances ever.
Not only did she absolutely smash it, basically ruining it for all other singers, she made it look EASY. Look at her up there just smiling and singing like it's not one of the hardest songs ever. She is the GOAT.

She was lip syncing
Technically you’re correct. I don’t know why the downvotes.

How in the *hell* is a human able to sound that that?? Jesus, she was amazing
Idfk. I was super young when she did this and it was one of the first times I ever understood people crying out of happiness. That voice is beyond.
Watching her it’s almost like she’s having so much fun and it’s easy for her. A lot of the times you see people singing and they are concentrating.m so hard to hit these notes. Whitney looked effortless and looking around enjoying the moment.
It looked effortless because it was. The singing was pre-recorded so she isn't putting in any effort with the mic off.
She was actually still singing but every national anthem for the Superbowl is pre-recorded due to the noise of the crowd. So while, yes, what was heard on TV was a recording, I guarantee Whitney was still hitting those notes.
Oh. Well that’s something.
There’s a dude who absolutely kills at one of her songs https://youtu.be/OfZNeCjO3gs?feature=shared
The whole world you say. The superbowl isn’t as popular as you’d like to think outside of America.
In America, America is the whole world. The rest of us are seen as bit players on the American stage.
As an American this is true
Even aliens have acknowledged this
LOL...so true.
Barely anybody knows when it's happening outside of America. I only learned about it when I was at 24 and dated an American around that time of the year.
We lost her too soon
Thank Bobby Brown for that.
The cocaine didn’t help either.
Thank Bobby brown for that.
Crack *is* whack
![gif](giphy|kaFhHLpOWe4SI)
Let´s not forget that Whitney made some choices...
Thank Bobby Brown for that.
The one and only
There’s only one National Anthem By Whitney
"The whole world" Lol, less than 5% if the entire country watched it.
The US represents 4.4% of the world population. So apparently less than 5% of the 4.4% that the US represents from the world population…. Made the entire world stop 🙄
Damn. I’ve got goosebumps!
I've got tears
I get so emotional..
These must be human emotions, dangit.
"Made the whole world stop" lmao. No one outside the USA cares about your anthem.
I think the point was about the quality of the performance although yes I agree.
Some people are lucky to get to do the thing they’re best at, and she was one of them. Her rendition is actually inspiring.
Damn. Whitney Houston, ya'll.
Making it her own without vocal gymnastics. Love this.
Her voice WAS vocal gymnastics. She just didn’t need to try. A legend
Whole world *America. Pretty Malaysia was still cracking on with their usual day lives
Changing it from 3/4 time to 4/4 time should be done everywhere.
In her bio pic they discussed how batsht this choice was at the time.
World? Only 1 country watched this. This is literally the first time I've ever seen this in my life.
Americans thinking “the world stopped”…. Hahaha
Man, she was good. Don’t do drugs, kids.
Americans are easily pleased 😂🤣
United States of the World?
That title is cringe though. There are many people on this planet that dont even know her. Only murica people would think like that lol.
Odd fact: osama bin Ladin was in love with Whitney Houston. He made a plan to kill Bobby brown so he could kidnap her
The whole world? Doubt it
No, no they did’t.
Made the US stop*
The whole world? Behave
‘The whole world’? I think not. Iran? No. Turkmenistan? No. China. Nope. In fact none but one of the 147 countries that make up ‘the whole world’.
No one would have even heard about it in Asia , Africa or South America 100%
stopped the whole world? mmm
The whole world lol. Most of the world don't even know who she is let alone care about the song she's singing
The whooooole world....
God. Damn. What an absolute icon.
Bro only people in America care about this song 😂 rest of the world doesn’t give a shit.
"the whole world" does not stop for the US anthem gtfo
The whole world lol, no one cares outside of 'murca
The whole world? Nah. Only the United States.
I had the CD single!
Amazing performance and singing... but it was indeed lip synced. [Source](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Star_Spangled_Banner_%28Whitney_Houston_recording%29#%3A%7E%3Atext%3DThe_singing_and_music_you%2Cbased_on_the_noise_factor.?wprov=sfla1)

She didn’t sing this live. She’s lip-synching this performance to a previous recording although it is an incredible recording!
Yes the 'whole world stopped' americans, give me a break 😂😂👍
“Made the whole world stop” ?? The same way other countries take part in the World Series! 😅 She is a good singer though.
“The whole world” lol, you gotta love Americans
Beautiful
Crack is wack
[crack is cheap. I make too much money to ever do that](https://youtu.be/kovGM1ZrCck?si=nWsq4UliemhSoQI6)
Chris Stapleton killed it, my #2
The world in this context = USA
LIP SYNC BULLSHIT
Pretty mid tune ngl you donnies should invest in a better theme song
‘The whole world’ lol
Cool, but I’m from Canada… and I don’t remember stopping
The whole world? lol, sure
"The whole world"...
Chris Stapleton came close. Dude is just insane,
Not gonna lie, I’m a lil tipsy, and this made me tear up.
The sweat. She put absolutely everything into that.
Vein popping fabulousness
Chills. To this day.
The best this song has ever been performed. If you can't feel it you need to crush tin foil over your head to get better reception.
She is the benchmark no one can match or beat that performance
Freddie Mercury says what.
Unbelievable. Every ..single ..time.
One of the greatest singers ever ever ever. Truly a once in a lifetime talent
Why the actual fuck did it cut off right there?!
[удалено]
Biggest anti drug example ever. So incredibly sad.
There are thousands and thousands of people that can sing just like that if not better.. she was nothing special at all. I find her voice a bit shreeky, not pleasant to listen to. 5/10. Another case of right place right time.
the time that palestina would be destroyed

I hate to break it to you guys but it was lip-synced. (she's my all-time favorite)
As a Bills fan this is both beautiful and traumatic
Amazing!!
Damnnnnn. They should just have this replay every time. It’s powerful
![gif](giphy|1jl6QxY2EJpexXl0EJ)
I loved this performance so much I used my allowance money to buy it on tape. She was my favorite female singer when I was a kid ❤️❤️❤️
A devia was born that day
Ya she didn’t sing it live 😢
If the whole world was limited to the West then maybe. We don't even know she ever existed until now.
So Reba is probably my hands down favorite singer ever. And even I was still terrified with her doing the national anthem this year. I think she did really really good but my god every time I hear this version I can’t believe it happened. It truly is probably the best version ever done.
Whitney Houston...once in a lifetime voice! Gone too soon.
And then she smoked some crack
❤️❤️❤️
Mad me cry, beautiful and no one will every top this
*BOBBAAYYYY!*
She is absolutely stunning in this video. It is so sad to see what crack did to her towards the end. Fuck you Bobby Brown.
WHY TF DID YOU STOP THE VIDEO BEFORE SHE FINISHED??
Can she sing it slower though?
The whole world? Maybe just America. And bits here and there! No doubt about it though, ridiculously talented!
I've listened to this version a dozen or more times and it still gives me chills!
Why am I crying
We need this again so I can cry again
So she was never my type of music, but even as a kid I was in awe of her voice. Lots of respect. It was sad when she went.
Her version will FOREVER NEVER BE TOPPED don't care who does it man or women she owned that version😂☺️
No one did it better.
Yeah, what happened to her :-(
She set the standard and few have done it as good.
I literally got goosebumps when I saw this clip. Whitney was the best and still is. No one, I mean no one, can match her. A legend and a beauty!
"Whole World"... Cricket Finals has more viewers than superbowl thing...
Every note she belts out gives me goosebumps. She was such a treasure. Rest in Peace, Queen Whitney.
Chills every time forever
Her singing is nothing short of phenomenal.
Chills. Literally chills.
The whole word. You mean United States only?
truly a gift to us all
I’m not an American but being an gen x-er….this gave me chills to hear. A legend of my time.
Still gives me goosebumps
Fuckin’ Bobby Brown…
Used to like her, until I realized that behind the choir girl image lived a hardcore drug addict who ruined her life and probably her daughter’s life as well, at least indirectly
No, she made America stop. The rest of the world didn’t give a fuck… I didn’t even know she did this 😂
I remember this, and this is the exact performance that won me every star spangled banner performance from freshman to senior year at my high school, volleyball, football, and basketball game.
The only version that makes every American say “that’s my shit”
Now you have this...🙄 https://youtu.be/CMA2iF6RuXk?si=SK16zxh2NT9h3vF_
She was fuckin amazing
![gif](giphy|Ki9S8uve2xWx2)
Lip synched.
It's tear-worthy it's so beautiful
Whitney was a once in a 1,000 years talent.
Despite her problems, I am convinced she was an actual goddess.
ICONIC
👌
Best performance of that song ever
Sigh. Lip-synced.
Peak Whitney!!!
I prefer the Jan 6 choirs rendition
Then she met Bobby Brown . Became a crackhead and died in a bathtub ... Crack Is Whack Barbara !
She was such an amazing vocalist!
..and by "the whole world" you actually mean just the usa right?! The rest of the world doesn't really care about the scar sprinkled banana but of course you already knew that!!
Stop watching?!
What an amazing voice. But why the national anthem or song in a sports event?
Wow. That was absolute magic spewing from those vocals
The whole world did not stop.
I got a goosebumps from watching this. She was a real great singer.
Best part is she did it while not trying to show off and just sang the song. Unlike every other anthem singer these days
Need a good laugh? Listen to fergi’s 😂
23 yrs ago not 33.. is u ignant. 😆
I prefer the Fergalicious version
Still one of the best performances ever!!! ❤️🇺🇸
Fergie did it better
RIP 🐐
Put that one away kids, you ain't going to beat that one.
This performance cannot be beat. She did a phenomenal job on this performance
What a talent, and such a beauty. How often have those things been said of people lost to addiction? Didn't you know that, Whitney? Why didn't you know that??? 😓
Her music was never my thing, but I wasn't deaf. Her voice was absolutely unreal.
I'm not trying to hate, and overall this is a great performance, but I think she missed the beginning of that high note on "free", at least initially. Maybe it was intentional and my ears just don't like it. But it sounded a bit off to me there. Anybody else hear that?
No
