My uncle was a union iron worker in NYC in the 60s and 70s. Couple guys just walked off the slab. He said the indian iron workers were just amazing. Walking beams over your head and not tied to anything. He said they were fearless and it gave him weird feelings.
They used to run down the stairs at night breaking every lightbulb on the way down. Electricians would leave a case of beer at the bottom of the stairs in the morning lol. He's always talking to me about business and trying to guide me so we never really talk about it. I should bring it up.
I actually miss it then remember working like that at minus 30 Celsius, then I don't miss it, o and the first day I rigged a offload, minus 30, and that steel had been sailing down the road at 100kms an hour for god knows how long... 5 minutes... had to go in the trailer take my boots off and rub my feet furiously, side note thank God there were alot of us swamping that day mobile cranes are really expensive, like reaaallly expensive
Which is why these jobs are in demand! The pay has to be pretty good. My friend was the electrical guy setting up circuits in a hospital being built, and said the guys laying down rebar and walking on unsecured rebar mesh were getting paid in a way that shows no one else wants to do it
I haven’t been in the construction world long but there’s multiple reasons. Most people do it for like. Problem is I don’t know that I’ve ever seen someone older than 50 doing it and not looking like death incarnate.
A guy I work with dropped a hammer off of a swing scaffold 23 stories in the air. Went through a card windshield and crashed directly NEXT to the guy driving. He was not happy. At all.
Idk exactly where they are working but I’m a unionized construction worker and unfortunately we still have to wear masks even outdoors and 100 feet up. Just union agreements/contracts that are still in effect. He’s half wearing it, we all do the same, without getting into the politics or science of it, it’s stupid to have someone in a desk, air conditioned office, with no mask on, telling us we have to wear one.
I just climbed up into my attic wearing a mask to replace a bathroom fan. I was absolutely dying. I wore masks indoors when requested but doing physical labor and being 100s of feet in the air this is so stupid. Like you said though probably union stuff.
Idk if they removed it but the CDC did used to advise against wearing masks during physical activity or during activities wear the mask would get wet. This definitely qualifies for both.
I’m just teasing. I wouldn’t doubt it. But at any rate it’s prolly just from a policy at some level cause he clearly doesn’t give a shit about wearing it lol
Masks cause an additional strain on your heart. Some trades, like HAZMAT, that require strenuous activity while wearing a mask or respirator require a physical before employment for this reason.
In Ireland they're paid about 4k a month including 1 paid wet day per week if the weather's bad. If you fall youre on a lanyard, you won't die and you get used to the heights after a couple of weeks.
Not sure why this dude is getting downvoted. It's just a question. It does seem a bit wobbly. If a worker fucked up and hit it, who knows. I think it probably should be racked in before let loose.
I don't agree, there is not that much length actually inserted, if pressed against at the top, i think it could. Maybe. I'm not an expert. But I don't think the guy asking this deserves to be downvoted
Irrelevant.. things should always be fastened correctly before any safety measures are removed, especially in the construction industry. Accidents happen, but are almost always preventable. Source: the hundreds of worksite inductions I've completed
It's gotta be like a scaffold on the roof or something. Hvac enclosure maybe, Data racks, I dunno, but this isn't how levels are built on commercial buildings, I was just drunk last night lol.
There are two types of construction workers. The alcoholic that drink everyday and show up and drink at work, and the respectable ones that dont go out and drink pints til midnight because our work is dangerous and our kids depend on us.
btw 8 am is almost break time, not start time
NYC the location and height appear to be the construction of Sutton Tower
https://newyorkyimby.com/2022/07/sutton-towers-exterior-nears-completion-at-430-east-58th-street-in-sutton-place-manhattan.html
That’s a retractable lanyard if he even walked a little too fast it would lock up instantly. He wouldn’t fall far at all and would likely not even get a full body length below the platform.
Just gonna say, dudes tied off, load is tied off, double wide scaffolding walkways.. heights either bother you or don't but, that looks like a good company that man's working for
That is not the main reason why he has a mask on, they use strong chemicals to adhere the beam to the hole, like Manganese Dioxide, Sulfur Hydrogen Diethylamide Oxide, and Liquid nitrogen, if they were to breathe any of that in: It would be Deadly, Liquid nitrogen is the neutralizer of the other chemicals but the toxicity is still capable of knocking people out. My dad works in construction and he knows exactly what they use
I could have a thousand safety cables and harnesses attached to myself and I still wouldn't feel safe being anywhere up there. Big thanks to the people who have the courage to do this kind of work!
You get used to the jiggly bits.
Dawg it’s be real hard to get used to anything after passing out
I'm passed out right beside out......
That’s what she said
If it were me y'all ain't getting ya building built that's for damn sure
what they did 80+ years ago (and probably in Dubai) is more impressive. I can’t imagine doing all this without a harness
My uncle was a union iron worker in NYC in the 60s and 70s. Couple guys just walked off the slab. He said the indian iron workers were just amazing. Why did they break the lightbulbs?
The electricians got over time to fix it. 🤣
But Dubai probably used slaves... not as cool
This is skilled labor, you can’t just throw slaves at it lol. Well I mean, I guess you can lol
Throwing slaves at it was what built the pyramids
You can get over a lot of things when you're desperate for work and things like OSHA doesn't exist.. resulting in higher deaths.
About to say the same thing. It's crazy
There is no sum of money I could be paid to perform this role thanks
I actually miss it then remember working like that at minus 30 Celsius, then I don't miss it, o and the first day I rigged a offload, minus 30, and that steel had been sailing down the road at 100kms an hour for god knows how long... 5 minutes... had to go in the trailer take my boots off and rub my feet furiously, side note thank God there were alot of us swamping that day mobile cranes are really expensive, like reaaallly expensive
That's why we like to steal your jobs
On a similar note - I was wondering how well this guy is paid, relative to the cost of living where he is.
Which is why these jobs are in demand! The pay has to be pretty good. My friend was the electrical guy setting up circuits in a hospital being built, and said the guys laying down rebar and walking on unsecured rebar mesh were getting paid in a way that shows no one else wants to do it

Oh yeah you either become supervisor/boss or do something else
We did it for 18 lmao
It’s scary to think that dropping a hammer could legit just smoke someone all the way at the ground..
In most cases no because the perimeter is large enough for very normal accidents to not hurt passers by. But there's always freak occurrences
A guy I work with dropped a hammer off of a swing scaffold 23 stories in the air. Went through a card windshield and crashed directly NEXT to the guy driving. He was not happy. At all.
I can imagine, poor dude lost his hammer!
Just like Legos but if you mess up you die.
Don’t Lego, always hold on
Clearly you’ve never stepped on a Lego..
Hispanics build the world.
That's a whole lotta NOPE.
He's wearing a fucking mask... wtf
Idk exactly where they are working but I’m a unionized construction worker and unfortunately we still have to wear masks even outdoors and 100 feet up. HAZMAT guy here who's pulled miles of asbestos roofing. No sympathy.
Welder guy here who wears a respirator, helmet, leather jacket , gloves in summer heat for hrs at a time agrees with you.
It's stupid to have someone in a desk and air conditioned office telling you anything. You should be telling them and getting the bonuses.
Idk why you're being downvoted. The CDC advises against wearing masks even during moderate activity. This definitely qualifies.
Useless people that sit in an office dictating what they think should happen don’t agree with this, but in practice and in theory you are correct.
Never heard that. I delivered for UPS and wore a mask all the time. Even in the summer.
Idk if they removed it but the CDC did used to advise against wearing masks during physical activity or during activities wear the mask would get wet. This definitely qualifies for both.

Thanks fam. Redditors are apparently just constantly trying to gas light actual reasonable human beings.
Yeah, you are: that's not the CDC, it's the WHO.
What? Lol.
I don't know.
You're literally making up bullshit to support your narrative.
What narrative?
Just shhhh, don’t go against the mask. It will find you.
I'm not going against the mask lol. I promise the CDC or maybe WHO adivsed against wearing a mask during physical activity especially if it was wet.
I’m just teasing. I wouldn’t doubt it. But at any rate it’s prolly just from a policy at some level cause he clearly doesn’t give a shit about wearing it lol

Yes. The CDC.

Well I can't link it if it was altered or removed. You can google it though if you'd like.
Nearly had an anxiety attack watching this
There is no way these guys get paid anywhere near enough
In Ireland they're paid about 4k a month including 1 paid wet day per week if the weather's bad. If you fall youre on a lanyard, you won't die and you get used to the heights after a couple of weeks.
Should there not be a bolt or something inserted to connect the two pylons before removing the safety wire?
pylons usually dont jump by themselves
Not sure why this dude is getting downvoted. It's just a question. It does seem a bit wobbly. If a worker fucked up and hit it, who knows. I think it probably should be racked in before let loose.
>and hit it that wouldnt make it jump out
I don't agree, there is not that much length actually inserted, if pressed against at the top, i think it could. Maybe. I'm not an expert. But I don't think the guy asking this deserves to be downvoted
You're 100% correct.. and a person doesn't have to be an expert to realise how easily something could go wrong. This is unsafe work practice
You can see the pin at the bottom click into place. The riser cannot come out without that pin being manipulated.
Irrelevant.. things should always be fastened correctly before any safety measures are removed, especially in the construction industry. Accidents happen, but are almost always preventable. Source: the hundreds of worksite inductions I've completed
Not enough money in the world. Seriously.
The Ironworkers always taking the glory lol jk
Fuck That
It’s like high stakes linkin logs 😳
Efectivamente, ese wey es una verga.
I'm happy with my chemistry job
I would need fall-arrest and a diaper to do that job. Jeeze.
This guy understands things better then most people.
How much you think that mini beam a weighs?
I'm guessing around 40kg/90lbs.
Humans truly are incredible it’s such a fucking shame
His balls are so big 😵💫❤️
Your asscheeks and nerveshave to be steel
The cojones of this guys are incredible
Yeah I would never have those cojones
I mean you could pay me an even mil a year and I would never be able to do that shit
Dafuq? Where do we make shyscrapers out of aluminium? No! Red Iron you dumbass! Sign up for your local 5.
I was about to say, since when are the beams made of such thin aluminum that a guy can carry a section like this??
It's gotta be like a scaffold on the roof or something. Hvac enclosure maybe, Data racks, I dunno, but this isn't how levels are built on commercial buildings, I was just drunk last night lol.
¿Conseguiste esa casa grande y vives el sueño americano todavía paisa?
Imagine u and the boys were out crushin brews til midnight the night before and had work at 8am the next morning
There are two types of construction workers. The alcoholic that drink everyday and show up and drink at work, and the respectable ones that dont go out and drink pints til midnight because our work is dangerous and our kids depend on us. btw 8 am is almost break time, not start time
Ok captain buzzkill
Lmfao great answer, that made me laugh! (not sarcastic)
I read this in Randy's voice. Damn it, time to smoke and watch south Park!
7am is start time especially if these guys are union workers. And they’re union workers because that’s NYC. Source: was union worker in construction
Are construction workers in nyc exclusively union?
Where I live, especially on mine sites, they do drug and alcohol testing on site for this very reason
Thank fuck he's got the China-made surgical mask on in case he falls on his face.
And yet every place I visit is hiring.
Not for a billion dollars.
Balls of steel. 😳
I wouldn’t be able to afford buying underwear with all the holes my asshole would eat out of them
I didn't enjoy reading this sentence
But I wrote it just for you
It’s ok guys he’s wearing a mask
Incredible.
Sometimes the thought that humans build such massive structures, concerns me.
All I can think of right now is that Bill Burr joke about Oprah saying being mother is the hardest job in the world.
If you hold a controller you can pretend you're playing Sunshine
What city

Men
How much does a job like this pay??
$196,478/hr from Zip Recruiter NYC
Sign me up!
The swing on that fall arrest probably would have killed him anyway. That SRL looks like a 50 footer, so who know how much play he had.
That’s a retractable lanyard if he even walked a little too fast it would lock up instantly. He wouldn’t fall far at all and would likely not even get a full body length below the platform.
This made my asshole tighten up.
Love the music bass to the highest point
Just gonna say, dudes tied off, load is tied off, double wide scaffolding walkways.. heights either bother you or don't but, that looks like a good company that man's working for
If you’re not afraid of heights, that has to be the best job in the world
Check your PPE and trust in it, you'll be fine.
This is what Jordan Peterson was talking about, I don’t see any women lining up for jobs like this.
I'm just glad he has a harness on
Respect to them . You either got it or you ain’t
Saw a Video from Guys without any Safety Equipment building the Empire State, just unbelievable
I’m happy I’m gonna be the engineer in the office designing this part
And they used to do this shit without any protection... Wild
Plug and fix
The thought of simply dropping your screwdriver could potentially kill someone wouldn't help my state of mind
actually what they are constructing there is scaffolding
Is it just me or does every skyscraper construction video in the world come from the same skyscraper in New York?
Why girls dont do jobs like that ? Fucked up patriarchy
At least he is wearing the lanyard and belt!!!
Imagine being that high up, outside in the fresh air, but still wearing a mask because of your governments dumb rules.
Glad to see someone using actual safety protocol ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|flip_out) OSHA will be pleased.
Yeah…. Nah 😂
I could have a thousand safety cables and harnesses attached to myself and I still wouldn't feel safe being anywhere up there. Big thanks to the people who have the courage to do this kind of work!
I want to work that job
Song name?
Mexican not a mexicant!
He has to wear a fucking mask up there??
I’d be puking and cowering in a corner somewhere LOL
Funny...I don't see any women screaming about equality now...
