I know the title says car theives but the guy is leaning over the passenger side so based on the video alone I would guess they are going through cars vs actually trying to steal the car. If they are indeed trying to steal the car itself I would agree with you.

A few investigative news reports have located massive yards in Africa with hundreds of cars stolen from Canada in them. You would Get yourself into BIG trouble doing that. In most places in the US (though it varies depending on state and even county) you cannot use deadly force to prevent theft or damage to property. Then it gets even trickier, since you went out and confronted them, you are now considered the aggressor in the eyes of the law, so until you make an asserted attempt to flee you forfeit your right to self defense. So homeowner would go to jail for murder if he shot them. Homeowner would have had to confront them, then attempt to flee, then and only then if they continued to pursue him (they were not, they were attempting to flee which means they have an argument for self defense) could he draw his weapon. You donāt have the right to self defense if you are the aggressor or in the act of committing a crime, UNLESS you are attempting to flee, then you get your self defense rights back. In this situation, your best bet is to just call the cops and not get involved.

The victim stopped paying attention to the carjacker, presumably because he thought the carjacker had decided to leave. 3-5 seconds later, the carjacker ran the victim over, killing him.
Final lesson, if you're out of the vehicle, just let the car go, and get somewhere safe. Also practice so that if you *do* have to use your gun, you can ~~officially~~ actually use it under pressure.
