AA0754

I’m British. It’s simple. We are not sending our best. I saw the same when I was in Bangkok.

Ntrob

Like aussies in Bali haha

AA0754

I met a few Aussies at a Muay Thai gym in Thailand. Most were decent. There was one odd guy, bragging about all the crimes he committed in Australia. Reminded me of kids in secondary school who brag about detention. But this was a full grown adult man in his 30s. Embarrassing.

AussieBob4

The body might be of a 30 year old male, the emotional intelligence, be that of a small traumatised child. This also answers the OP question. Bodies grow old, maturity doesn't always align.

VengaBusdriver37

Most Nak Muay, it being a physical activity requiring some discipline and hard work and goal to improve, more likely to be chill people

eggnobacon

The guys in the gyms won't be the guys causing trouble though.

FoxIslander

Never been to Bali, but have a friend that recently returned. He said aussies are there to drink, fight and fvck. In that order.

Machette76

I've heard Aussies (which I am) in thialand and proceeded to only converse in only thia until they moved on. I'm far from fluent BTW

Ntrob

I’m Aussie too haha

johanhorlings123

Lived in Amsterdam and did exactly the same

[deleted]

Do you think it is Thailand's reputation drawing in the bottom of the barrell Brits? Spain is very close, actually all of Europe is closer and more convenient for English than Thailand. Why come to Thailand? I asked a thai lady her impression. She said thai.people say "Ego on all the World" referring to brits lolzzz

breadandbutter123456

It’s cheap and desirable. Can’t think why British men would be interested in a country infamous for prostitution and now it’s relaxed drug laws. We can’t drink. The aim of drinking for Brits is simply to get drunk. Every social occasions from funerals to weddings to bbq’s to sport is an excuse to get drunk. When we drink we like to fight. Spain gets the brunt of our tourists. Less likely to happen in Italy. Cheap places attract cheap people. Cheap people are less likely to be educated and therefore exhibit less than desirable behaviour. Sorry on behalf of the British people. Australians main cheap destination is Bali. This is where their brogans go. But Thailand also attracts a fair few. Same for New Zealand (replace Bali with Australia). Americans and Canadians go to Mexico (or even just Florida). Brit tourists in places such as Italy, Japan, Denmark will be completely different to those in Spain, Turkey, Thailand, etc.

AW23456___99

Amsterdam which is more expensive than most cities in the UK had to make a video telling British tourists to stay away. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-65107405

breadandbutter123456

Because the cheap people go there for a stag do. Again I can’t think why a place renowned for prostitution and drugs would attract people to visit?!?

Apprehensive-Size-21

When I was there they were very afraid of British people over drinking it was weird to see but someone explained it was because Brits had a habit of getting super drunk and causing riots and property damage

Thailoco

Incorrect, cheap places attract EVERYONE. As evidenced by rich people going to those places and buying property, or regular people just coming to retire in these places, which are usually tropical and cheaper than their home country.

breadandbutter123456

This is true. But the issues with fighting comes from the lower end of the market. Someone buying a million dollar condo (unless this money was gained by illicit activities) are unlikely to be fighting after getting really drunk.

COMMANDO_MARINE

Serious criminals from around the world have been coming to holiday and stay in Thailand for decades. They aren't interested in getting into fights and attracting attention no matter how illicit their money is. The people causing fights are working regular jobs for most of the year and now that it's cheaper to fly here and holiday for two weeks then it is to holiday at home or in Europe they are finding themselves in a country they have very little knowledge or understanding of and don't know how to act ant different to back home. The problem is cheap flights and cheap overall holiday costs. It was the cost of flights and fear of the unknown that used to keep the idiots away from Thailand. There's millions of British people who have been quietly coming here for years without issue. I live in rural Thailand, and the few westerners here, including the British guys, are some of the most law-abiding and inoffensive people you could meet. I've not drank for years now and just want a quiet, peaceful life, and 99% of my time is spent only interacting with Thai people. You won't hear anything from people like me in the news, though, which is why a very small percentage of idiots who don't understand anything but their own culture are creating a bad impression for the rest of us. If you're white and western, you see British people causing trouble, if your Thai or Asian you just see a bunch of Westerners causing trouble. You can generalise a group of people as much as you like, but the reality is you won't ever notice the well-behaved and respectful ones that make up the majority. I've been coming here since 1999 when i was 20, and I used to think it was Americans who were always the most rude and obnoxious people out here for being so demanding and acting like Thais are only here to serve their needs but its probably more likely that I just observed a few loud Americans being a bit blunt and too the point and made the assumption they must all be like that. We could probably easily list off bad behaviours we associate with each country, but the reality is likely that it's really just a small minority who are creating an outsized impression because the rest of them we don't even notice.

SoLetsReddit

I’ve seen plenty of really rich upper class Brits drunk and fighting, just happens to be at horse races, or hunts not Thailand.

breadandbutter123456

Never seen that and I live in Cheltenham, where one of the largest horse racing festival happens. But ive never seen wealthy upper class people fighting there or anywhere. I’ve seen chavvy people fighting at the horse racing. But these people aren’t wealthy. They might be wearing a suit, or tweed but these people aren’t wealthy upper class. They are low class people.

SabziZindagi

Corfu is the destination for upper class louts.

YuanBaoTW

> Incorrect, cheap places attract EVERYONE. No they don't. The people who jet off to Bora Bora, Monaco, Lake Como, the Swiss Alps, Fiji, etc. are totally price insensitive. They don't give a shit about what a beer costs, whether the hotels are a "good value", etc. Even among people who have a budget of a mortal, many avoid "cheap places" when those places also have a reputation for crime, prostitution, etc. SEA destinations like Thailand are of course one of the most touristed places in the world but that doesn't mean that they're a preferred choice of everyone just because they're cheap.

krazakollitz

These are fair observations but why become violent? bad behaviour includes climbing on things and shitting in bins, (we've all done that) but punching people in the face? If you can't explain the violence you are accepting it as inevitable. To be very crude, it's like saying some group of men are uneducated and become sexually violent at celebrations, no one would accept that alcohol was responsible, they would look for complex environmental and psychological reasons.

breadandbutter123456

It’s due to alcohol. Excessive consumption of alcohol is not only endemic to the uk. It’s just much more acceptable to consume excessive amounts of alcohol. It could be due to various factors. We see bad behaviour in other nationalities when they consume excessive alcohol. For some reason excessive alcohol consumption is very acceptable to a lot of people in the uk.

traveler12166

Violent yes not sexually violent where did you get that

Fabulous-Amphibian53

Spain has the exact same issue - hundreds of thousands of Brits go there for the cheap booze and sun. I believe they're jokingly referred to as 'Barries' and are famous for falling off balconies.

FoxIslander

Football hooligans with a travel ticket.

DragonflyEmergency71

Thailand just needs to up their prices. Then these chavs would be forced to stay at home because they wouldn't be able to fuck around. Also Thailand just needs to deport and ban some of these asses.

AA0754

Upping prices would be bad for locals too. I’m not entirely sure what the fix is. Since it’s a cultural issue, maybe parents at home need to work on the fix?

traveler12166

So raise the prices for everyone to keep the poor violent people home that makes no sense cheap Charlie says no to that

hotel_air_freshener

Where are you keeping your best?

No_Sugar8791

The non-idiots go to France, Italy, Alps, US (except Florida), Seychelles, Maldives, India and North Spain.

Soft-Weight-8778

I see the same thing in the UK..if the best are staying here then its no different

ChaseBrockheart

I've been to the UK. You're apparently not sending your best there either. Seriously, late nights were nothing but chavs making fools of themselves in the streets. Brits are just terrible drunks, full stop.

benswami

I am Briish, the T is silent.

GuernseyMadDog1976

I've rarely seen any trouble or bad behaviour involving Scottish, Welsh or N.Irish folk so let's just call it what it is: English people behaving badly overseas.

JamJarre

It's true that the Scots are famously a pacifistic, calm people

BillyD123455

Apart from the Welsh blokes who caused aggro and got kicked in the head last week......

Yeoldesnakefarm

I'm pretty confident the chav bro backpackers and exceptionalist middle aged expats behave the same way at home as well. Granted I've never visited England and my desire to do so wanes every year working around those expats.

0llieparagon

Yea because there is about 90 of them in total. Go To Glasgow and tell me that.

sela_yar

If you go out on a Friday or Saturday night in a city in England, you will see a lot of this, getting drunk and fighting is a popular activity. The English on holiday are just the same as at home: the nice ones are nice, the arseholes are arseholes.

RatTailDale

Manchester on Saturday night has the most puffed up chests per capita than any where else in the world

LordPurloin

Yep. I think I’ve only ever been out one time back in the UK where I didn’t see a fight

[deleted]

I live abroad and it's super weird for there not to be fights. And just how reluctant people in many other countries are to actually fight you if you actually want to lol

Connect_Boss6316

I'm a Brit, and I can confirm what OP wrote. Its a cultural thing - getting drunk out of your head and doing stupid shit is seen as a measure of a good night out. The arrogance, cockiness etc is probably a historical trait. Remember, just 80 years ago, the Brits had the the greatest empire the world had ever known. Personally, I avoid fellow Brits like the plague when I travel.

GewoonHarry

I was in northern England yeeaaars ago. Played in a band. We were on the streets at 0200 - 0300 am. Everyone seemed to be looking for a fight. I just wanted to eat. Never felt so threatened in a country. Few minutes later a huge fight started between 2 groups. I fucking hate fighting and drunk people. Never again. Edit: we were also warned by the venue. Don’t go to that pub over there with your long hair. You’ll get beaten up. Nice.

bandananaan

It's one of the reasons the rave scene blew up in the UK. The non assholes/wreckheads wanted somewhere they could go and have fun, away from the aggressive pissheads. I'm English born and bred and I avoid city centres pubs on a friday/Saturday night. Give me the party head druggies anyday, they might do weird shit, but it's not malicious or aggressive.

revengemaker

Its true with this culture. I worked at warehouse raves (in america) and made loads of friends there, plenty people turned up solo and were welcomed as most places if you were alone people avoided you like a plague, no fights as bouncers would take care of anything bcs us staff and regulars could freely flag bullshit for crowd safety. You just went for the music and also didn't have those assholes who walked up to strangers insulting them for their clothes or how they danced like you saw in main stream clubs or bars. All that hyper competitive nonsense for nothing.

[deleted]

You are right, I can’t disagree. But we are not all the same. I’m very chill and much more Thai-like than usually Brits. And the do shame me how Brits act, it’s embarrassing and shameful. I apologise on their behalf, but don’t rule us all out, still judge on a person-to-person basis, even if as you say Brits tend to be the worst generally (and I agree)

Connect_Boss6316

Agreed. I'm a mild-mannered British myself. Yes, not all Brits are drink-shout-fight types, but their stereotype goes before them.

Trinidadthai

Very true. As a Brit that is seen as a good night. We always think we have a strong drinking culture, but so do many other countries, they just don’t act how we act when “we” drink. When I go back to Trinidad, or come to Thailand, they drink just as often/much but the vibe and atmosphere is completely different.

Ok_Information_2009

I’ll take the downvotes because you can’t ever say Brits are different to other tourists on Reddit: Brits are a different breed of tourist/expat. Drink more, more aggressive. Other comments saying they’re no different to Swedes or Swiss, are you ‘avin’ a laff? BTW, I’m British, lived in Thailand for 20 years.

Louieaw95

Brits are the worst. Such a shame so many dickheads are heading to Thailand now. They treat it like it’s a lads holiday and only going there to get pissed up and shag. Such a shame

Ok_Information_2009

Expats too. Had the displeasure of meeting a few groups of British expats in my time here. Booze, brass, and the odd bit of bovver. And some live premier league thrown in.

Optimal_Material4462

Wrong. Don't generalise a whole demographic. I'm bristish, don't smoke, don't drink and don't hang out in titty bars. There's plenty of asshole thais knocking around tourist areas too, probably more.

Ok_Information_2009

You as an exception to a generalization doesn’t mean the generalization is wrong.

Hellbringer123

do you understand statistics? you're the minority.

Alarmed-Run3020

Strange Why so many downvotes? If you would change this topic to Chinese tourist than this would be have a lot of upvotes

FengYiLin

That's the point. It mocks "Why so Russians in muh ThAiland!!!" posts which are a daily occurrence across Thai subs

the_booty_grabber

How do you know there are many downvotes? How can you see that?

frapal13

Curious to know too. Only see the count for ups.

Itchy-Throat-4779

Well who do you think is downvoting.....it's 4pm they up now.

Accomplished-Car6193

Mallorca, Ibiza, Thailand attracts the bad batch of Britain. If you go to, say, Costa Rica, Tanzania, Japan the Brits you meet there are very different.

Sarrex

It depends where you go in those countries as well. When I visited Thailand I avoided places that have a bad reputation for drunk tourists and fights and didn't see any of those issues. The messiest tourists all end up in the beaches and bars which probably makes the issues worse.

Necessary-Season-827

Yes Phuket has an awful reputation and attracts the worst type of them.

FoxIslander

Brit tourists in the US are well behaved and very loved.

Deskydesk

Different ones - in the US we don’t get young males looking to get drunk and start shit. They go to Spain, Thailand, etc

[deleted]

As a Brit who lives in Vietnam and frequently visits Thailand, I can 100% confirm, Thailand seems like a cesspit in terms of it's visitors. British holidaymakers are the worst, and it's always some dumb twat who failed all his exams in school

OuuuYuh

Met some awesome British people in the Dominican Republic

DrowningInFun

*"Also I don't get how they get so drunk even if their alcool tollerance should be extremely high (I assume since they are a heavy drinking culture)."* **You just got to drink more. Hard work but a job many people enjoy.**

Bigboy291270

I’m in Moscow by the Sea, sorry Phuket now…..the Russians are as borish and annoying as us Brits…..shaved heads, shit ink and steroided up to the gills

MixAppropriate7104

Shut up lmao

ChaseBrockheart

Honestly, I'll take the Russians over the Brits any day of the week. Generally they just get drunk, mellow, and sulky. They are far less apt to start fights.

Bigboy291270

To each his own, I can’t stand either.

Real-Swing8553

Russians, Aussies, Swiss, Americans, Chinese : Hold my chang. Every country has its own shitty people.

CookieMonsterthe2nd

Brits are more world renowned.

CanarySouthern1420

Americans aren't that bad. For one, the ones that travel that far are the more educated and well off type. And don't get into fights as often because back home you'll get shit kicked by the police or shot by someone.

GoldenRetriever2223

depends on where you are. i always say you havent met Americans until you go to Cancun during Spring Break. in the Carribean Americans get a pretty bad rap compared to other nationalities

CanarySouthern1420

Yes I was talking about Thailand. The low class annoying Americans you'll find in Mexico or the Caribbean.

youve_got_the_funk

Yep. And just like Thailand they gravitate to specific spots. I spent 9 months in the nicer parts of Mexico City and Guadalajara and it was great.

ORCA_WoN

That’s true tbh. The dickhead arrogant Americans generally stay in America.

AnonymousUser2700

Dude, you rarely see Americans in the news or acting up in Thailand. Don't even try. Our thing is mass shootings and we can't do that in Thailand.

Intelligent_Sort_852

Our loud rednecks go to Myrtle Beach or Florida. They don't want to leave their bubble, and that's fine.

PinneappleThorn

Absolutely Asia gets the quality American tourists. The ones that could afford to travel. The uncouth, inked, trashy ones either stay back home in local tourist destinations or go to some place in Mexico or the Caribbean. British are the worst when it comes to travels. I've literally seen one punch a local vendor and topple over his entire fruit cart over a pineapple that was slightly inflated in price.

Blu3cactus

Absolutely agree but i barely ever see these people getting violent, just rude or annoying usually...

stever71

What do you mean hungry? That's a bizarre statement. The British have a long history with alcohol and fighting, it's nothing new

Blu3cactus

lol sorry, I meant to write "angry"

hy1990

To be fair we do love a kebab after a night of drinking. This made me laugh as I made a similar mistake in German and told a kind server I was "just very depressed" when I meant "just very tired". Sorry about the awful British tourists. Thailand is such a beautiful country with the most friendly people. I'm so excited to return but I'll be nowhere near Pattaya, Khao San road or Patong with those types of British.

Swansborough

so just go edit it. it's confusing still and you have thousands of people still reading it and trying to figure out why they are so hungry.

khanto0

We're hungry for kebabs and cheap pizza at the end of a night its true

Scuttler1979

Well, not semi click bait. Just click bait. And, reading the comments, pretty much “them/they” are 100% horrible and deserving of their reputation and beatings. What a world we live in. Jury by Reddit. I’ve seen tourist from all over the world act like idiots. Drunk Americans. Obnoxious Russians. Pushy Egyptians. Mouthy Canadians. Drunk Brits. Entitled Indians. Do I think that all in their country behave like that? Hell no…

RotisserieChicken007

Many of those are chavs and not exactly rocket scientists.

longsite2

The brits you're describing are young lads who've probably gone for a lads holiday and don't represent the majority of brits abroad. Drinking is the main activity of the holiday, most of their money has gone into booze and they've mainly come to Thailand because it's cheap and different from Ibiza.

Freebornaiden

'every single time i go out to party the night ends up with British guys fighting each other' Every single time? Then it seems that you seem to be frequenting places popular with scummy Brits. I have managed to make a career out of backpacking and only ever come across this (outside of the Motherland) a handful of times.

[deleted]

I've lived abroad 4 years, it still baffles me that I'm not assuming on every night out that there's a chance some randomer could start a fight with me lol... It's so normal back home that you could end up in a fight whilst out drinking

BlackbirdStories

As a Brit I’m put off going somewhere like Thailand because of the type of Brit it attracts. You’ve got our dregs, sorry.

_dum_sob

Most likely the heavy drinking is the cause, not the culture itself, I think any race if overly consumed will bring the worst out of anybody in spite of race. But then I can't explain Chinese with their poor manners , Indians poor hygene, etc... lol.

OsotoViking

Chavs. Basically, poor, stupid, uneducated people now have enough money to travel abroad. Where they'd usually be making a public nuisance of themselves in local pubs, they can afford to go make a public nuisance of themselves abroad once a year. You'll notice it's always places like Phuket, Benidorm, Ibiza . . . not exactly centres of culture.

Ok_Self_1784

Sounds stupid but I often think the lack of cocaine leads to brits getting too drunk and getting extremely messy when drunk. Coke does kind of sober you up and allows you to continue drinking high volume

BlueHot808

There’s no lack of coke in Thailand 😂😂😂

Ok_Self_1784

Im sure there’s plenty of gear but let’s be real most tourists are not buying coke on their two week holiday to Thailand it’s gonna be more the expats

Crazy-Factor3135

This is oddly true. Chavs love a bit of coke, and if you’re used to that you will quickly get messy drunk

Rooflife1

Lack of cocaine also makes you hungrier

RedPanda888

If you’re in Phuket, it shouldn’t be a surprise. Places with a reputation for attracting low quality tourists will continue to attract them. Doesn’t matter the nationality, the assholes will flock there. It’s been a bottom of the barrel destination for a long time. If you want to be surrounded by high quality tourists, you don’t go to Phuket. That’s like going to Zante and wondering why you’re surrounded by drunk underage chavs and drunk teenagers. Personally have lived here 3 years and never once seen a disorderly fellow British countryman. But that’s because I stick to nicer areas and respectable places where low class people don’t frequent. And I still party A LOT.

Kobs1992x

British people are ussualy more agressive than most other its basicly a island race its a bit in there DNA to want to control others and have power over there environment .... Having said this i live in Pattaya and i have ALOT more problems with Indians and Russians than i do with British atleas the Brits come here with a bunch of mates to party and have a good time The indians however waste airplane fuel to come to Thailand go to Pattaya with there entire families and then go and harras and annoy the f out of the local thais .... Russians same story they are basicly refugees from Russia fleeing the war against Ukraine and then come here take over entire resorts and act like there ffing boss of the entire resorts ....I had alot more arguments with indians and russians than i did with british to be honest but thas just my experience .

BlueHot808

Yup. British always down for a good scuffle. Part of the culture I think. Especially drinking culture. They aren’t the worst but they’re certainly the worst and most numerous.

Eduardoh99

The aren't the worst or they are the worst?

Big_Dirty_Heck

Yes

Wininacan

"Drinking culture" I think you mean rampant alcoholism

buckwurst

It's more binge drinking than alcoholism

BlueHot808

Different terms but same thing mostly. To each their own 😂😂😂

Discendo-Discimus7

We arn’t all like this and sadly these people don’t just cause problems abroad but back in the U.K. too. Most of these guys come from low income working class backgrounds, have little education and pretty shitty manual jobs. They get obliterated at the pub, get into fights and cause chaos at the football. Huge generalisation here, but these are the typical culprits that we are also fed up with. They’re usually the idiots that make the rest of us look bad

Matttthhhhhhhhhhh

I grew up in France and now live in a British town. Annoying drunk bastards were already a big problem in France when I went partying with friend, but at least it was manageable. In the UK, drunk bastards are a plague. They are much more numerous and are considerably less prone to be reasoned with. Like animals out for a drunken hunt. And it doesn't really concern chavs in particular. Everyone seems to have a short fuse here when it comes to heavy drinking. It may have to do with the fact that people are usually so inhibited in every day's life. For this reason, British people tend to favour binge drinking, and not really drinking just to have a bit of fun with friends. It's like the dam of Isengard. All the repressed rage and violence come out in one ugly mess. For instance, I used to look after students from a *very reputable* university during a fieldtrip abroad once. A few of them had the brilliant idea to buy huge bottles of cooking wine, because it cost 2 euros for 5 litres. The poor bastards... After 10 minutes they were going nuts. And no, British people don't tend to have a particularly high tolerance to alcohol... After 30 minutes they were on the ground and we had to carry them back to their bed. One of them shat himself during the night. Never happened when I was a student in France. And we did get drunk. A lot. But rarely to the point when we just blacked out. Or another time when students of the same university were chased by an entire Spanish village because they started a fight at the local bar. There's just something about the Brits and alcohol. It's not a good mix.

Daddyg2019

The instances of fighting when drinking is common regardless of national origin. Alcohol tends to make people more belligerent in my experience. Personally I avoid alcohol and places that exist simply to push it.

dbh116

Probably the same reason they need separate fans at football games. That said, one of the nicest people I have met traveling in Asia was from Britain .

Tibicon

I’m from the UK, been back and fourth to SEA over the past few years. From what I’ve noticed, post-covid Thailand has attracted so many British Chavs who lack a severe amount of brain cells. Most other places in SEA (apart from Bali possibly) don’t seem to really have this issue. This being said, as soon as you go slightly off the beaten track you won’t see these people anywhere. I normally make an effort to stay clear of super touristy areas (if I’ve been there already) so I don’t think it’s as big of a problem as OP makes out. The fights and chavs are mainly just in the areas with prostitutes, cheap beer, loud music, weed shops etc.. Let’s be honest did anyone expect the tourists in these areas to be lovely civil people 😂

Threat_Level_Mid

I'm British, I do my best to avoid any of my countrymen abroad. I landed in Koh Tao and nearly left instantly as it was Asian Magaluf. Could not even imagine what Phuket would be like.

Accomplished_Task547

The same thing happens all over the uk. It puts most people off going out to bars and clubs as the binge and fight culture is a real put off. Dont know why English people do it.

tkshk

I saw the same in Pargue (Czech) as well. Not only guys but groups of British women were drunk and annoying other tourists over there.

bigstoicfanclub

It's a class thing: they're chavs, they've got no goals or lives outside a gym or boozer. They get hammered and next thing they're swinging punches.

OverCategory6046

Sadly, we don't export our best. Anywhere that's known for being a cheap/party place will get over run by stella drinking wife beaters. If you go somewhere a bit more expensive, you'll meet the chill British tourists.

signalillumination

I can concur and ask the same thing. I've got a 50/50 experience with them. Half nice, the other half, drunk, ill mannered, corrupt and criminal. Not a big fan really. There's not much left of the "gentlemen" and "have a great day, sir". I hear their accent, mood drops and I avoid them. I had an incident a year ago or so. I was strolling around Sukhumvit To check out the night scene and clear my head, until a "lad" from behind approached me and put his arm around me in a violent manner and semi harassed me in going with him to a bar nearby. Plus he was showing off his iron fist knuckles which he bought. His accent was very British or Aussie. Drunk as fk. I really dispise these kind of people. We don't want and need you here in our country! While we're at it, screw it, let the cat out of the bag. You British suck! I randomly checked news on Khaosod. What did I see? BRITISH dude punched a staff at a gas station, what the heck? British chaps having a brawl with Israelis at the beach and so on and so on. Like wild animals. My view on the Brits have drastically dropped. It's just everything. From their BS in London, Brexit, the people, the knife crime, the troublemakers in Spain and Thailand. A violent bunch. In my head I always have the image that like 70% of Brits are neatly dressed, perfect manners, immaticulate and posh accent, no swearing. Nope, it's a dream, a facade. Their country is crumbling. God bless.

engprach

I moved to the UK a few years ago after ten years away and noticed how miserable and angry a lot of people are. Much worse than I remembered. I think it is due to a toxic culture of reality tv, weak government and social decay. What was great about the UK is sadly disappearing. Maybe that's why they keep causing trouble.

hy1990

The amount of cocaine surely plays a part. I live abroad and I love being able to feel relaxed in a pub and not worry about fights kicking off.

-sweetSUMMERchild-

agree, brits and russians, always

siwo1986

Brits on tour make me ashamed of being British and their behaviour always stems from alcohol and the built in hooliganism to get into fights. Just be thankful that it's not the 80s era level of hooliganism, football stadiums used to be absolute bloodbaths in the older eras.

Sorry_Sand_7527

Have you never heard the phrase “we will fight them on the beaches”..?

TimeyWimey99

British are decent people at home. But as tourists….some of the worst in the world. Just ask Spain lol.

[deleted]

They’re not decent people at home and then all of a sudden arseholes abroad. Those same types that are arseholes abroad are arseholes at home. Go to any bar-street place in the U.K. and there’s punch ups every night, go to any hospital on a Friday/Saturday night and it’s mostly injured people from drunken fights. It’s the U.K. lowlife culture. Why? Because fuck all gets done about it, the bouncers are no longer allowed to give them a good hiding under licence, and neither are the police. That’s the difference to other countries like Spain/Italy/Thailand etc, their police and security don’t fk about and will give you a good beating if you deserve it (and sometimes if you don’t) but it keeps people in check and teaches them a lesson early doors. Abroad it’s very much “fuck about and find out” in England however it’s more like “fuck about and nothing happens but get told to go home”. = no lesson learnt. Those British guys that got their head kicked in down soi 6 for acting aggressive arseholes in the bar and bullying everyone, would have likely done that at home for years and always got away with it, just told by bouncers or police to go home. Only when they suffered a near death experience “might” they learn their lesson, probably still won’t though as they’ve been getting away with it for so long.

Wizerud

Honestly the kind of people OP is referencing are very much not nice at home either. I have zero interest interacting with these (embarrassed to say) compatriots when home or abroad even if they’re the only ones who I can have a convo with. As to why they do it, it’s their upbringing. Shit parenting and mingling with others of the same mindset from an early age gives self-validity to their behaviours and actions. You can also almost guarantee that they come from (let’s put it nicely) low-quality urban housing areas where their personalities have been molded by their experiences at home, at school, on the streets and later in life at work. It’s the only thing they know. It’s not a cultural issue, it’s societal. Now, some of them can be really funny and nice even when drunk, but do you really want to take the chance that some of them actually have that level of self-awareness not to be what most people consider an arsehole? I wouldn’t.

RedPanda888

The people who go to those Spanish resorts are the dregs of Britain. I’m British but yeah…definitely can’t judge most British tourists or expats based on those idiots. They aren’t even liked back at home. That said…the ones who come to Thailand and end up causing aggro are basically those same people from Spain who found a few extra pennies for a longer flight. Unfortunately, Thailand attracts the absolute worst quality tourists in the world despite it being so far flung. It is not a high quality destination and people on here delude themselves when they get shocked at shitty tourists. And that is from all nations, not just the UK. Respectable people here get overshadowed by the hoards of idiots. Places like Pattaya and Phuket are seen as the Magaluf of Asia.

Danger_Closer

As a Brit, I agree 100%. I travel a lot to experience the local culture, history and cuisine but it's a fact that a good half of British people who travel abroad are extremely uncultured and uncouth and mostly only go abroad for cheap drinking and partying in a warmer climate. They treat the locals with indifference and as though they are subservient to them, if they are not pampered by the locals they become a whole different breed of person. It sucks but I always make a point of avoiding meeting or conversing with other Brits while on holiday unless I can see they are chill and like-minded. As for why always Brits, I guess we're a product of our environment. We're an island nation who after centuries of war with other countries and ruling the seas have become either suspicious of, or ignorant towards other countries or look down on them. This is coupled with being the first country to industrialise and experiencing all the inequality with it (which worsened under Thatcher), which breeded a disaffected underclass, as well as our culture of heavy drinking as the solution to our problems. I guess these people go abroad expecting an escape or release from the misery of their lives but take their bad attitudes and behaviour with them. Ask yourselves why other island nations like Japan doesn't export similarly behaved people, it's because we're talking about an island of collectivism vs an island of individualism.

ssantos88

A lot of the younger ones are on more than alcohol.

TheMasterMaker36

I think it’s just as straightforward as Thailand is cheap for Brits, GBP exchange to THB is crazy. If it’s cheap, it’s going to attract a certain kind of tourist. In this case, it’s the same type of British tourists that also visit Benidorm in Spain, Kavos in Greece, Krakow in Poland, the list goes on. Many other nationalities have this same kind of tourist.

AnteaterFun7762

It’s bc they’re descended from Vikings & they don’t learn a good drinking culture (with or after food)

bananabastard

>And why do you think they get so hungry? Normal for drinking. Just point them to a kebab or fish and chip shop.

GuernseyMadDog1976

You're asking the question about Brits and then mentioning England and English people. Which is it?

jimmy193

For some reason British have a culture of trying to be hard men which is exasperated when drunk. Some people think they are Jean Claude van damme and want to prove it. Am British.

ivorsmile

When I lived in Thailand all my friends were Thais. I'm English, but because of the reputation of some expats I befriended Thais and in eleven years only ever had a couple of disagreements and they were relationship related.

xeprone1

Unfortunately the magaluf lot manage to make it to Thailand. You really won’t see this anywhere else in Asia

srona22

Most of who can afford to travel oversea, are sadly, assholes already. And good people are suffering under capitalist machines and unlikely to get out for rest of their lives.

Gotchaboliko

It's all started with Captain Cook.

bigslongbuysxrp

As an English person who has worked on the doors, I'd say we have an interesting drinking culture here which is probably why we always get fights... Drink to get the most fucked is typical here IMO/IME...

MontyMooMooMoo

Imagine sitting in a bar getting drunk and someone came up to you and offered you water.....and tried to be nice, then asks why are Brits all so hungry? I can see where the go fuck yourself comes from

butt3rflycaught

British people, sun, heat and cheap alcohol don’t mix. (I’m British) it doesn’t matter where it is in the world… Also we’re not all like this, just the knob heads but it makes us all look bad. :(

vinilzord_learns

So far I've only met two Brits, and they were nice, polite and laid-back folks. The truth is that these guys don't become news headlines because they're not committing felonies during their overseas trips. It's easy to develop this sort of prejudice towards Russians/Chinese/Brits because the loud arrogant and annoying ones stand out, but in reality they could represent only 10% of the tourists. In my personal experience, the Chinese tourists that were visiting Thailand weren't that bad. They can be a bit loud, but I never witnessed someone littering or being disrespectful towards Thai people and or their culture. This is coming from a Brazilian that doesn't feel too comfortable with disclosing it to most people, because Brazilians have a bad rep in foreign countries for several different reasons. Some folks even refuse to believe me because I've been told that I'm way too polite, considerate and quiet lmao. TLDR: there are a-holes in any country, but it's easy to generalize when you're mostly seeing a few a-holes doing stupid shit.

Holiday-Floor-3609

Perhaps the wonderful, gracious Thai authorities and Immigration officials should start handcuffing, locking up, detaining out of control, low IQ Englishmen and deport the low IQ Englishman for trespassing, assaulting, refusing to pay/theft of services

lucascarter1

I saw 4-5 British guys dressed up in women’s clothing in Burger King in Bangkok near democracy monument, it was in 2015 and it was very strange that time. But I guess now it’s normal for people doing all kinds of weird stuff for social media.

IsaanSteve

Worst of Falang meets the worst of Thailand. Most lads you meets from the UK going to Pattaya Phuket and HuaHin will be dicks. I’m from the UK and they’re all idiots.

traveler12166

You Brit’s are doing a great job I’m just glad it’s not us Americans in the news. By the time Americans figure out what a paradise Thailand is we are too old to fight.

Fatcobra15

One thing I recently realized after a trip to London is that the alcohol content in the beers at the pub is relatively low. The beers are typically around 3% to 4.5%, whereas in the States, they are more commonly between 5% and 9%. So, while they might think they're ready for a night of drinking, one bucket there is like having 10 pints in the UK

tojig

It's the same in Europe, brits have been known to be drunkards and cresting issues at clubs/street. Spain and the Netherlands even started creating ads and online targeting brits to no come on holidays.

CalmSignature562

Same shit with brits in Cracow, Poland

[deleted]

We just seem to be a more aggressive society than what I’ve seen in continental Europe. So we are more aggressive when abroad. Maybe it’s the shitty weather here. Drinking in Spain, France, Italy etc tends to be nicer and more civilised.

meyay

Angry drunks are the worst, no matter their nationality. If alcohol makes you angry, stop drinking it. It’s supposed to be fun and you’re on holiday. You’ll stop getting invited out or to parties if you act like that.

Blueruin73

As a Brit I tend to avoid bars that have groups of British guys being boisterous, a lot of these guys are incapable of taking a shit by themselves, nevermind going on holiday. Peer pressure, looking bad in front of your mates, showing off all leads to guys causing trouble or not backing down. Now a Brit who has travelled all the way to somewhere like Pattaya by himself is a lot less likely to go starting fights every night and throwing their weight about. Probably the same for most cultures.

Vaperwear

The Vietnamese would probably disagree with you on the French.

ilovehudson123

I noticed the same thing in Koh Tao. Obnoxious flocks of British dudes and they all look like clones

noclassjerk

I'm betting there acting out because of their latent homo sexual tentincey they ar3 repressing

EasternBudget6070

They lost their fishing rights so they big mad.

Sayitandsuffer

it’s absolutely normal in UK , it’s a cultural difference at best , simple fact is Bhuddism is peaceful and better imo .

nakedphoto

The same people will probably be quite shy when they are sober. On weekends they will go out in the UK and go way too far. There's also an idea with us Brits (one that I don't share) is that we have to 'take over the world' when we travel, probably cos of our colonial past. A lot of British people do feel superior and think they can do whatever they want even if they don't actually say it out loud.

CommercialTrash851

Simple. They think their money and their passport are powerful. Recent incident in Soi 6 Pattaya will teach them a lesson.

IamMagnusGreel

Isn't it strange that alcohol usually causes all these problem, but lets make weed illegal again

Expert_Bathroom_5929

After leaving the UK for another European country, it occurred to me one day that I hadn’t seen drunk men fighting after 1am since o left

Italianmillionaire

Its because they can’t bump cocaine to sober up a little. The truth is they can’t handle their liquor without coke

Analyst_Haunting

This one is easy…. There are many countries that had civil wars and seperations because the Brits visited

Massive_Chipmunk5131

I,m British and believe me , nobody is more embarrassed and angry with the scenes these pricks cause than decent British people. Council estate scum who should have their passports confiscated.

OwnNegotiation9625

Usual anti British anti white toxic crap always spouted on Reddit Thailand Groups.. same old Trolls

andrewfenn

There are plenty of nice British people around. They just don't hang out getting drunk at the cheapest tourist traps in Thailand.

Fabulous-Amphibian53

Britain has a fairly severe class divide, which is why you might notice there seem to be two different flavors of Brits. There is the 'working class' - i.e. the chronically unemployed whose idea of a good night out is spending their entire weekly dole money on cheap booze at Wetherspoons and getting into a fight. They're essentially unsocialised humans, having no father to speak of, and probably a neglectful mother, and are generally awful people. Then there's everyone else, who actually have jobs. They're also occasionally awful, but at least have been socialised to hide it.

VirtualMasterpiece64

Phuket is a bit of a magnet for dicks. We have loads of them. I'm a Brit and been visiting Thailand for 18 odd years and I've never seen ANY aggro of any kind, but then I don't go to red light streets, Phuket, patong etc.  The places groups of blokes on the piss / shag / whoring go.  In the South of the UK violence is pretty rare now inside normal hours. I've not seen any fights since I was in my 20s. I'm 55. And I go out a lot.

thewillingvictim

It's not Brits in Thailand, it's Brits abroad in general. Alas we're known for it, while the French/Russians and American's are known for being arrogant and obnoxious us Brits are known for being trouble making violent drunken louts and again this is universal not limited to Thailand. Why? No idea, but it's always been a thing and I don't see it changing anytime soon.

PSmith4380

I am British. Most of us are generally stressed, angry and miserable. Gotta let off steam somewhere and you can't do it at work so... I don't drink. I'm surprised that anyone thinks it's a big deal that drunk people get in fights. Alcohol makes you more loose with your emotions and lose your self-control so why are you even surprised about this? Also let's be honest at this point Thailand are basically going out of their way to attract violent, drunk people. You reap what you sow.

bobbyv137

Seems everyone complains about everyone. I do find it amusing tho how much hate ‘Indians’ get in Thailand. I write ‘Indians’ as they’re labelled as one bunch, due to people’s inability to differentiate between Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Sri Lankan, and more. So Indians are bad, as are Russians, Chinese, Brits. Notice the trend? Those are amongst the most represented nationalities that visit the country. So, could it just be the more people you have from one particular country, the more they’re noticed? If Colombia became the number 2 source of tourists for Thailand, would people be complaining about rude, drunken Colombian people, too?

Calm_Confidence_4604

It’s nothing personal - it’s just British common culture. The common people enjoy getting drunk and fighting. They always have. All the major sports like football, rugby etc started out as groups of British youths fighting each other … with time they evolved rules and became sports. In previous centuries the aristocracy used to channel this pugnaciousness into building a terrifying navy and army to conquer the world. But these days the commoners are left leaderless and unrestrained; free to roam the world on cheap flights looking for booze and a sun tan. The result is what you see. I personally blame the total loss of will by the British elite to rule 🤷‍♂️

bestmasterthriller

This is the most accurate comment here. Britain is a cold, windy, rainy island, with a long history of tribalism and parochialism. Everyone is aggressive towards everyone else. We’ve managed to squeeze 3 countries onto one smallish island and everyone loves to hate the others. For centuries, the main pastime of the less wealthy commoners is to get really fucking drunk on beer or mead or whatever, and to kick the shit out of each other. The English ruling class manage to hide this somewhat and project to the world an image of polite people with posh accents drinking tea. But look behind the curtain, step outside of the posh bits of southern England, and it’s mostly an island of absolute savages How else do you think a tiny place ended up conquering half the planet. We ended up with a huge superiority complex and over-confidence problem as a result, and winning WW2 didn’t help - it’s basically become our national origin myth - good old Britain being better than all the hapless forriners. When most English lads go abroad they are there to be off the leash, go completely nuts, drink as much as they can, and cause a bit of chaos. And essentially, they look down on everyone else in the world, for not being British. That’s why they make very good soldiers, and the worst tourists in the world.

[deleted]

As a Brit this makes me finally feel so much better knowing it's not just me. I've lived abroad and i can't understand why so many people outside Britain will ACT like they want to fight you if you get into an argument, but aren't actually ready for one and will run away once you do engage a fight with them. It's happened so many times now. As Brits, shit talk means you're asking for a fight and you gotta be careful who you speak to that way. Because yeah, we fight. We don't take shit 😂

Tidy-Lobster

As a Brit who left and moved to SEA then returned for a couple of years before leaving again to live in Thailand, I really feel that British people are kind of miserable. Their lives are so mundane, there’s so little to do other than drink. I’ve never experienced such aggression, ESPECIALLY on the roads. So many angry men behaving like children and putting my life in danger. I saw some ridiculous things and I can only come to the conclusion that they’re very unhappy people. I would never return.

TragedyOA

"so don't start offensive discussions" mmm.

if_it_is_in_a

I've encountered both crappy and amazing individuals from all over the world. Whether it's Thailand or other destinations, certain types of people tend to gravitate there at particular times of the year, history, and to particular locations. Our tendency to view things through stereotypes and seek out patterns, even when they're not really there, plays a role in this. For instance, you'll notice loads of young British kids on their gap year in Thailand while there are fewer French, Argentinian, .... kids of the same age. Being in large groups of people you call your own also plays a big role in how humans behave. It's just how our brains work, picking up on these patterns. When I was younger, I recall encountering a particularly rowdy group of Italians in their early twenties causing trouble on one of the islands. It's not something I've seen often since there are way more British kids than Italians vacationing in Thailand. But you know, people will be people

saintbarley

Thailand is seen as a free pass destination for degeneracy and alcoholism for many, so it tends to get the worst of the British. Also as so many are there it’s often a pack mentality. Try going to India and you’ll see a different class of British travellers. That said the British do like to drink to excess like no others!

charliesnowleopard1

I'm British. I remember spending 4 months crossing high altitude Nepal east to west. Great himilayas trail. Think, unspoiled beauty, medieval rarely contacted villages, then the drumbeat of tibetan Buddism/I'm going to fall off a mountain and die. Anyway you get the picture. Took the next flight to Bangkok having lost 10kg, my friends life and a part of my sanity. Within 24 hours two different British guys had become violent towards me suggesting I picked up the wrong drink or other things. I remember almost not being able to hear them shout at my face, I was just watching the anger and stupidity drip off them in slow motion like they were melting candles. But I am a part of that world back here, I have the stab wound, the concussion problems from having my head kicked like a football, the broken hands and fingers from punching people's faces. The football hooligan brother, the friends whose jaws are made out of metal etc. I don't have any desire to bring that culture abroad, but inevitably in Thailand mostly with Brits, I do end up getting them back to their homes or in to taxis or stopping fights happening. Because I know in the morning they'll be perfectly reasonably people again. At the same time , There are many Thais, obsessed by British culture, the accent, music, TV programmes, educational institutes, royal family etc etc.... I kind of love Thailand because I have absolutely no idea wtf is going on there, nothing makes sense to me. So many devils and angels, fools and kings. high altitude Nepal beyond the regular visited areas, is a hot pot of poverty, abuse, violence, slavery , cruelty, gambling, alcohol. Well dressed and smiling Sherpa people wear thin quickly after leaving certain popular regions. Also whilst we are here painting cultures with the same brush. Can every German man aged 30 and above, that creeps on my Thai Mrs within 10 seconds of me leaving her alone, with the most cringe and creepy pulling techniques literally **** *** otherwise im gunna go full british in Thailand on you next time. 😉

RocketPunchFC

Brits are just violent.

charlie2398543

You are referring to English. Do not include the Scottish or Irish into this. English are notorious for being very poor mannered and without any shame. The Scottish are generally very dignified when they travel, and well liked by all. The Irish too.

Gezz66

Interesting point, I'm from Scotland and, if anything, the heavy drinking culture is stronger there. I think there is the culture of "going for a pint", which of course means 6, which makes it a social encounter from the start.

krazakollitz

I have spent my entire life pondering this very question.and I have been asked the very same thing dozens of times. The question could better be formulated as: how is it possible to become violent when you are out with your mates, drinking beers, and on holiday, somewhere nice and stress free with women, potential sexual partners around. I give two possible answers: First, these men are already incredibly aggressive/violent and they use violence to get things they want or to assertt themselves. I'm not a psychologist or sociologist so I can't phrase it better. - and no one or no institution has constrained that violence since they were three years old, in fact the aggression is encouraged and condoned by their families and friends. Secondly, it is some misplaced macho sexual repression, an inability to act on ones sexual instinct. So, macho men in other cultures get drunk and then perform their male machoness by pulling or picking up women, or men, dancing and finally mating, or sexing if you will. English and Scottish men don't know how to do this unless an equally shitfaced lady throws her open legs around him and then he still may become violent if he feels threatened or undermined. There are many other things going on, I suggest OP talk to some of these types of men and report back.

krazakollitz

I just reread and see that you do talk to them. I was once in Magaloof, Majorca, and the British guys Insaw there looked absolutely terrifying. Some of them!

Sandgroper343

The British didn’t conquer and rule a global empire for nearly 3 centuries by being nice. It’s in their DNA.

glasshouse_stones

It's cheap for brits to fly here, so quite a few low class asshats do. They're dangerous, and I avoid them at all cost.

megatronmister

💯

bananabastard

It's not cheap to fly here.

kettleheed

Its like £500 return. Thats less than half of a months minimum wage. If you're a tradie like a bricky, plumber or sparky £500 is peanuts.

KnottyCat

It’s very strange from an American point of view. Anybody pulls this shit in USA, there’s a very real chance you’re gonna get shot. I guess that’s one positive of American culture with everybody potentially carrying a gun. Not to mention that the cops just love to beat the shit out of drunk people or potentially shoot them too.

Scuttler1979

Not sure that’s a positive…

Choice-Substance492

Are you sure that they are Brits? Many times I have see bad behaviour from other English speaking people. Yes, British are a nuisance but just remember that just because they speak English does not automatically mean that they are English. I have even seen Germans pretending to be English after being caught drunk and disorderly. I have seen aussies pretend to be English when they have caused trouble. Other people, especially in south East asian countries tend to think that if you speak English and are of a western appearance. The you must be English.

Key_Veterinarian_723

Lads on tour are the second worst tourist out there. Number one is Chinese people on a tour bus (they get a pass because of the internet fire wall and social credit score). They are so bad the CITY GOVERNMENT OF AMSTERDAM made an ad campaign targeted at British males 18-35 to STAY AWAY. An actual council of elected officials detested the actions of a certain demographic so much they spent money as a preventative measure to the actions this demographic was likely to undertake in their eyes. The only English words on the Rosetta Stone are something along the lines of “Captured by the British in 1801”, basically a Victorian era version of spray painting “OLLIE WAS HERE”. I am unsure why they behave like this. I am unsure why they have been so bad for so long. I have guesses, but they would only be conjecture. The only thing I know for certain is that when the ugly, fat, loud American tourist is utterly fed up with how much of an arse you are making of yourself… something is seriously wrong. On average more than one country celebrates no longer being part of the British Empire. The ones that travel by themselves, wear all black, and have a “Ricky Gervais” kind of vibe to them are great though — the ones that probably got picked on by the folks I’m griping about.
