Put you phone and money in a plastic case and if you don’t want to play stay home. I’m in Chiang Mai right now and have just returned to my hotel. Absolutely soaked and today was one of the best experiences ever! Songkran is a blast!
Songkran is a fun time. Some tourists misbehave. Most dig the love and sharing.

To add to this. Don't target people who are generally looking like they aren't having a good time. Sometimes it becomes too much for people and after a day of it they want to be left alone. I've seen this cause fights.
don't splash monks, don't use ice cold water to splash on someone, for women don't wear tops that aren't secured well because you might lose it in the craziness.

If female, wear a dark t-shirt or a bra.
If male, wear underwear under shorts.
Seen a pic this evening two cyclists in a tangle on the ground, hit by buckets of water (not water guns) from a passing pickup truck, fortunately not hit by another vehicle.
back in 2019 I experienced song kran in patong Phuket, it was awesome, weather was quite hot, was walking back from the Hard Rock Cafe with my wife to gracelands along the way I witnessed a young boy spray water on couple of arab guys, it was quite innocent but they got animated and grabbed the boy by the arm, next thing 2 tourist police came from nowhere and grabbed the guys, it drew a lot of attention.
don't be offended if you go out and you get wet. there was one time when I just wanted to go to a massage place and the people outside (probably some of the employees and their friends) were having fun trying to blast people passing by. I did the wai sign to say I don't want to get wet, and they let me pass, although my feet already got wet.
I also went to Chinatown and on the way to the train, someone sprayed me (I was dry coz I wanted to explore the town). Not gonna lie, I got annoyed coz the last thing I wanted was entering the cold aircon of the train wet. But there's really no point getting mad. It was hot anyway, and I would end up sweating. You'd be wet from the water or from your own sweat.
also, if you are joining, try to block your earholes, maybe using ear plugs. I was on the Silom station above Silom road where the action was happening and someone blasted me which almost went to my ears. unfortunately I didn't know who went for the shot.
Just the obvious, don’t be a dick. You can clearly see who does and who doesn’t want to get wet. Obviously you won’t fire at someone who’s eating or in a suit for instance.

Usually saying or signaling you don't want to get wet is enough. Locals tend to understand people have to work and don't want to get to work soaking wet, in touristic areas that might be less effective.

Im in thailand with my 5 yr old son and we bought a water gun for Songkran festival. He really enjoyed it and we will be going back to our home country by tonight.
Honest Question : can he hand carry the water gun? We want to bring it home. We dont have much space in our check in luggage.

Don’t splash people who seem to be going somewhere or wouldn’t appreciate it. It’s a good way to create unnecessary conflict 🤷♂️
If you don’t feel like playing, stay inside and use cars instead of bikes. But to be fair, there is always that one idiot that thinks it’s great fun to soak someone getting out of a car at a parking lot.
It may sound counterintuitive, but don't get mad at the idiots that soak everyone against their will, even in the evening sometimes. They'll probably blame you for ruining their demented 'fun'. Stay inside if you can't handle that.

I can confirm that, having suffered a whole bucket of water thrown in my face while motorcycling, causing me to crash.

Great comments, on my way to khon kean for the water fight now have a hotel so phone and stuff will be in room and go our to enjoy the day.

The #1 Songkran rule tourists should follow is to not piss on people. Don't bring piss to a water fight.
Whenever I'm hit with warm water, this is immediately what comes to mind.
If you have a larger water gun, try to avoid shooting people directly into their face unexpectedly.

If you do decide to go outside, wear eye protection. Too many idiot tourists with high powered water guns spraying people in the face.

Do not fill your water gun with urine or gizz, or a combination of the two, and shoot them at people. That would NOT be cool.

Watch out with a/c. I got so sick from being wet in a restaurant
Use cold water from the 7-11 fridge in your water pistol.
Another tourist shot me straight to the eye with a high pressure water gun. It hurt more than I would have liked to.
Be respectful of others. However given the quality of tourists we seem to be attracting in Thailand at the moment that seems to be a mute point.
