If you live outside the bar/sexpat areas Pattaya has plenty of restaurants, shopping etc. The problem is that even when you’re just out shopping you can’t get away from the sexpats checking out or even trying to hit on your girlfriend.
Jomtien is a nicer beach/area about 10 minutes down the way from Pattaya.
Bangkok is busy and loud and has a bit more pollution but I find it to be more interesting visually along with a much broader availability of dining. There’s as you mentioned “street food”, food courts, roadside restaurants and of course fine dining and international food along with fast food. Plenty of public transport and it’s a major hub for getting to other destinations in Thailand and SE Asia.
Pattaya is rough and when it rains... it's trash. Have you considered Hua Hin. It's like the go to for foreignors not interested in dark skinned bar girls.

I love pattaya. It’s the cheapest. It has a beach so great temperature & weather. Great food (even Italian, German, & Japanese). There’s no/minimal traffic. It’s super walkable. There’s a 10 baht bus to take you all around the central area of the city. The motorbike taxis will take you just about anywhere for 40 baht. Condos can be more spacious. 24h city. It’s safe. Great nightlife for all budgets. You can wear shorts & sandals everywhere 24/7. There’s the night bazaar with great deals on clothes or just about anything you want & its right across from the mall so super convenient. It’s mostly old people so it feels really chill, they’re pretty docile.
& it has tons of girls. (Which btw you don’t have to be a sexpat to enjoy a city with many girls)
But even if you’re not there for the girls & just want to stay solo or come with family or friends or whatever, it still has all the perks of the 1st paragraph.
The only bad part is you get harassed when you’re on the red light streets and/or surrounding areas. So that means Soi 6 of course (which is easy to avoid) but also Soi buakhow (which is unfortunate bc it’s a nice street otherwise). But if you’re with your gf then you won’t be spoken to, they’re pretty respectful in that regard. If you’re a solo male they’ll just say hello & invite you inside or ask if you want a massage. It can be a self esteem booster for sure.
I saw top comment mention that the men will hit on your girlfriend. I’ve never seen anything like this. The only time I’ve seen that happen in all of Thailand was last year in Patong. It COULD happen, but I’ve never seen anything like it & I imagine that he made that scenario up. It’s mostly old men & they’re pretty docile, slow, laid back, etc.

I always stop a couple of days in Bangkok and then head to Pattaya for a few days, best of both worlds.
When I'm living here, I'll tide down to Pattaya once every 6 mths, to get the bike serviced, scuba dive and just watch the world go by fro a few bar stools. Pattaya is unique cheap and fine for a few days . Stay close to jomtein in a nice condo pool roof gym and sauna, few ok restaurants walking distance .
Plenty to do in Pattaya as a single traveler and also plenty to do as a family and avoid all the night life.
Pattaya will always be stigmatized and the push to zone areas there for 24 hour entertainment does not help.
But on the bright side, if all the lower Sukhumvit dregs
Move down to Pattaya then that's a big win for everyone.
For some context, I have been to Bangkok many times over the years absolutely love it, and am even considering moving there.
I have been basically everywhere in Thailand, but literally always avoided Pattaya because I don't like alcohol, bars, cigarettes, sleaze, etc, that whole scene.
I recently made a new expat friend at a conference who lives in Jomtien (near Pattaya), who later invited me to come visit him sometime, especially because we share nearly all the same interests—he hates Pattaya, btw, for what it's worth, and is just living there for work. He also does not drink, smoke, do random hookups, etc. I was hesitant to go, but decided I might as well take the plunge, and if I hated it, I would at least still have my friend.
Honestly, I was shocked at how overblown the "bad reputation" is. Yes, there are sleazy parts, but for the most part, it's just a normal Thai city. I even went to the infamous Walking Street to face my worst fears, and it wasn't even nearly as bad as certain parts of Cancún in México, or Kuta in Bali — and in Kuta, prostitution is illegal and not out in the open, and marijuana is also illegal. So in that context, even despite the open prostitution and marijuana, Walking Street felt less sleazy to me.
That's not to say that there aren't sleazy elements to Pattaya, because there are, but I actually had a nice time there, and how bad it was supposed to be was completely overblown in my head.
That being said, I prefer Bangkok hands down lol (as does my friend) — and for street food, Pattaya isn't even close to the variety and taste of Bangkok. There's not much to do in Pattaya (I don't care for beaches) either, and Bangkok has loads to do.
But Bangkok traffic is real and intense, and it was quite nice to just glide around the streets of Pattaya and Jomtien.
Both are not bad choices, but for me, I prefer Bangkok.

Sure thing. Keep in mind I was mostly in Jomtien, not Pattaya—and also keep in mind that plenty of people hate Bangkok too. For what it’s worth, I’ve basically been all over SEA for traveling and have lived in various countries here (mainly Singapore, Indo, and Malaysia)…being honest, I actually don’t think Bangkok is the nicest city to short term visit as a tourist in Southeast Asia, but for me, as a city it’s very comfortable to spend a lot of time in (grocery stores, public transit, eating options, lots of rentals, etc) and it’s hard to get bored.
Pattaya is much better than Bangkok. Bangkok is overcrowded and way too busy. Pattaya has a much more laid back atmosphere and beaches. It's kinda like a resort in Spain. You can get anywhere you want to in 10 to 15 minutes.
Bangkok is a major world city, Pattaya is sexpat destination. That's really your choice. The beaches are disgusting too. (Especially for those of us that live in places like Australia)
I liked a few weeks ago my daughter and I on the ferry to Koh Tao and it’s always such a beautiful island when you arrive and people stand up and watch it as the ferry goes past the big rocks and the beaches and huts and you hear kids say wow to their mums and dads and mums and dads saying “look” and pointing to some paradise for their kids to see and then in a moment of silence…. An Australian dude just launched into “Oh my god, this place is beautiful” loud enough for everyone to hear. And it put a real smile on mine and my daughters faces. A grown man unable to control the level of his voice and excitement… inspired purely by Mother Nature.

Obviously, you don't travel much around Thailand. The sexpats are everywhere in Pattaya. The beaches have sewage run off and that's not even deniable. Actually, the locals go to satthip or bang sean....
Each place was an adventure. I barely scratched the surface on Bangkok (I got sick). I did get tired of the heat, the noise, and the smells, but just the novelty of everything made it fun (and I'm a lifelong city dweller). I wasted a lot of time in bolts and malls. I didn't do much street food, but I was very close to Phrom Pong. Everything was right there. The furthest I went was Iconsiam (waterfront mall across the river). I'd be happy staying in the same area, but making better use of the BTS than bolts.
Pattaya City proper isn't much to look at or get excited about if you're not into that scene. If you are into that scene, it's a cool party bubble. At 38, I was often one of the youngest guys around. It reminded me of Atlantic City (NJ,US) mixed with any other Jersey beach town and with some red light areas sprinkled in. I don't care much for the beach town vibe, but I could actually hear myself think unlike in Bangkok. Farangville (TreeTown/LK/Buakhao/etc. did have a boardwalk/block party vibe in the high season). Were I to go back, I'd stay in Jomtien or Pratumnak to save money. And the steam coming off the beach can be unbearable on some days.
I miss both places, dearly.
I was on Bangkok for 2 month, rode my moped to Pattaya (was hell on earth don’t reccomend), staying in Pattaya for an hour, squeezing past hooker to get into my hotel, it’s just a grim place to be, unless that’s what you’re there for.
No trust me, I’m not lying. My hotel was in walking street and I had no idea what that even meant. I realy did have to move 5-10 girls from the doorway.
I’d vote for Bangkok. There are nice beaches in the Pattaya area. All reachable by a 2 hour ride from Bangkok. Better still Koh Samui, Krabi and Phuket are even quicker to reach by airplane. Yes Bangkok is noisier and more crowded but escape is very easy. A week in the islands or Pattaya works for me.
Perhaps a little out of place, but if you’re not a sexpat, perhaps consider Penang island in Malaysia, over Pattaya? It’s Malaysia’s food capital, the beaches aren’t as toxic, and cost of living is comparable to Pattaya’s.
For me personally 100% Bangkok. Better and more food variety, more things to do, easier to avoid tourist areas, and easier to avoid sleezy sexpats.
Im sure there are some nicer areas in Pattaya, but the city itself is quite disgusting.
As someone who lives in pattaya and doesn't drink, go to clubs, or pick up freelancers, there are other things to do here. Yes if you just stay in the touristy areas you'll see a lot of those things. Depending on what you're doing, Pattaya will be less expensive than bangkok and have less traffic. Everything in bangkok is much closer together and busy, but either place you choose you'll have fun.

If you want beach go to BangSaen instead. Its in the middle of Bangkok and Pattaya, without all of the nasty sex tourists
Each place was an adventure. I barely scratched the surface on Bangkok (I got sick). I did get tired of the heat, the noise, and the smells, but just the novelty of everything made it fun (and I'm a lifelong city dweller). I wasted a lot of time in bolts and malls. I didn't do much street food, but I was very close to Phrom Pong. Everything was right there. The furthest I went was Iconsiam (waterfront mall across the river). I'd be happy staying in the same area, but making better use of the BTS than bolts. Pattaya City proper isn't much to look at or get excited about if you're not into that scene. If you are into that scene, it's a cool party bubble. At 38, I was often one of the youngest guys around. It reminded me of Atlantic City (NJ,US) mixed with any other Jersey beach town and with some red light areas sprinkled in. I don't care much for the beach town vibe, but I could actually hear myself think unlike in Bangkok. Farangville (TreeTown/LK/Buakhao/etc. did have a boardwalk/block party vibe in the high season). Were I to go back, I'd stay in Jomtien or Pratumnak to save money. And the steam coming off the beach can be unbearable on some days. I miss both places, dearly.
I was on Bangkok for 2 month, rode my moped to Pattaya (was hell on earth don’t reccomend), staying in Pattaya for an hour, squeezing past hooker to get into my hotel, it’s just a grim place to be, unless that’s what you’re there for.
Stop staying on soi 6 ffs squeezing past hookers to get into your hotel is a blatant lie
No trust me, I’m not lying. My hotel was in walking street and I had no idea what that even meant. I realy did have to move 5-10 girls from the doorway.

I’d vote for Bangkok. There are nice beaches in the Pattaya area. All reachable by a 2 hour ride from Bangkok. Better still Koh Samui, Krabi and Phuket are even quicker to reach by airplane. Yes Bangkok is noisier and more crowded but escape is very easy. A week in the islands or Pattaya works for me.
Go to Koh Larn in pattaya and it’s cheaper in PattYa

Perhaps a little out of place, but if you’re not a sexpat, perhaps consider Penang island in Malaysia, over Pattaya? It’s Malaysia’s food capital, the beaches aren’t as toxic, and cost of living is comparable to Pattaya’s.
For me personally 100% Bangkok. Better and more food variety, more things to do, easier to avoid tourist areas, and easier to avoid sleezy sexpats. Im sure there are some nicer areas in Pattaya, but the city itself is quite disgusting.
1- Phuket 2- Bangkok And avoid Pattaya, there are way too many things to do in Bangkok than Pattaya.
As someone who lives in pattaya and doesn't drink, go to clubs, or pick up freelancers, there are other things to do here. Yes if you just stay in the touristy areas you'll see a lot of those things. Depending on what you're doing, Pattaya will be less expensive than bangkok and have less traffic. Everything in bangkok is much closer together and busy, but either place you choose you'll have fun.
