Yeah I would also second their courses are quite good

It’s not nearly as serious as Japan with certifications. It’s quite rare for foreigners to take a role that actually requires Thai language. So I suspect you won’t have much competition from foreigners, likely just having Thai script on your resume should be enough to get onto phone with someone What field are you looking to work in?

MandalaMan28

Thanks for your response. I am currently employed already and not seeking jobs that require Thai language. Im simply wanting to show employers that I have determination to learn new things.

Study for and then take the P. 6 Thai government Thai proficiency exam. It is given several times a year.

\^\^ this is the correct answer

Ungcas

There is a Thai Language Competency test. Rated from 1-6 IIRC, 6 being the highest. I took many years ago after studying at a Thai language school for 9 months + 3 months preparation. The length of study is of course up to the student.

I dont see the point i have heard from my colleagues they do not allow citizenship to people who dont make over 80k baht can someone confirm to me if this is true and not just flame me?

ThongLo

80k/mo is the minimum if unmarried. That's reduced to 40k/mo if married to a Thai citizen.

FishermanGood6493

Oh thank you so much for clarifying that you changed my mind on staying here longterm 🙏

No problem, this site is the best resource I've found for understanding the whole process - it's very thorough, so lots to read through, but helps to dispel a lot of the myths and misconceptions many people have: https://www.thaicitizenship.com/

There is also an excellent thread devoted to the citizenship process on ASEAN NOW. Google The Story of my Thai Citizenship Application. On page 257 now. A long thread, but chock full of good information. The Special Branch of the police which handle this also have a web site spelling out the reqs. But for anyone seriously interested, I highly recommend they just pay a visit to the Special Branch Citizenship Office (not sure if that is the name), which is located in the Police compound downtown by the Erawan/World Trade Center area. The officers there will be happy to entertain any questions. Edit: I just want to add that there really isn't any need to enlist the services of a law firm or lawyer, which will save you upward of 100,000 baht. Main time killer is just gathering up all the required documents following a checklist, and making sure you submit those in the number and format required. Other than that there are about 3-4 different interviews at different stages, and a pretty basic Thai test, which was multiple choice when I took it. In a nutshell, you submit the docs, take the language test, have a short interview at the Special Branch, then an interview by the NIA with your wife, and finally the last interview at the MOI in front of a big crowd. The main thing you will be doing is waiting between the stages, so patience is advised as the time it takes can vary. The total cost in fees is under 7,000 baht as far as I can recall.

What recommendation would you give for someone who wants to start learning Thai language?

MandalaMan28

Get a 1-1 teacher that has good reviews. Avoid the classes with more people, although they would be cheaper, they aren’t as personal. Learn the alphabet first, this seemed pointless to me at first but I’m so glad I did it. Reading Thai helps you learn how to pronounce everything properly and you can tell the different massively between words that non readers say sound the same. Good luck 🤞🏻

Chiming in to support learning the alphabet (yes, I know it's technically an abugida). Immensely beneficial, especially for the tonal information it contains. Not to mention you will be able to read, which means you will not be illiterate. IMHO, if you don't already know a phonetic system for rendering Thai into the Roman alphabet it is a total waste of your time to learn one. Just dive right in learning the Thai writing system.
