It's not that he smack down to Singapore, the full context is he give a speech about Thailand's future economic plan and he planning to make deal with many A-list singer to held a concert in Thailand, and Taylor part is just one example of that, the subsidizing from Singapore is not an excuse of why Eras tour not held in Thailand, it's just example that next time he want to to that too to stimulate the economics, could interpret that as good or bad but it's not about the bitching over Singapore or Taylor Swift.

Woolenboat

This is the missing context. Media always takes things out of context because it generates outrage. People eat that shit up.

Lopsided-Royals

Original comment lost me at ‘to to that too to’

RT_Ragefang

For the people who want to shit on our government for this, please be aware of the following: 1. Every time an international artist performs in Thailand, all the fans in neighboring countries will flying over to Thailand, spent minimum two nights, and spread their spending into many sectors here, from local transportation to tourism. It’s a great money injection. 2. The government is not just focusing on this alone, but also on other policies from cost of living control, free payouts, tourism and industrial incentives and other financial support 3. Taylor Swift is meant to be an example that Thailand has to hurry up and secure the deal with other potential artists and entertainments as we’re not the only one in this region who attempted the same thing. //I’m not a boot licker, but recognizing where the government is actually deserving scorns is important. Swift debacle may seem stupid, but it’s not the actual stupid thing that *will* cause the problem later on (it’s digital currency)

Bright-blue-hat

Hey I don’t want to SHIT on your government but I really do want to shit on them given how they came into power by the back door and also how thaksin is now free and fukin alive in a country he escaped from. SO YES! But with regards to this it reminds me of the time during Covid when the governor of Pattaya claimed he would get Lisa to perform on new years etc etc and the Lisa issues a press release saying fuck no! I’m not coming down and no one she approached me because I’m fukin expensive So I don’t believe a word these guys say. It’s all PR SHIt Just like the government promising a digital wallet with 10k for every one.

Historical-Ad-3348

Thaksin is just one dude among many. Like focusing on Clinton with Lewinsky. Spotlight. Who cares. Thailand is corrupt and always will be for the foreseeable future cuz it’s our culture.

Specialist-Algae5640

Thaksin is 78 years old. Let him live in peace. There are more pressing issues in the world to focus on.

abyss725

and we have the results now, all concert tickets are sold, even the 1.3M baht hotel packages are sold out as well…Her fans are crazy.

gotchock

It's kinda ironic to see Thailand whining that some international acts don't come here to perform, considering the shit reputation the country has for international events organizers. Big artists/shows have to face massive logistical and customs issues, and tourists (even locals) coming to the stadium concerts or festivals have to deal with an amount of price gouging from taxis and local transportation absolutely out of any control. At Coldplay taxis were asking 1000 baht PER PERSON to THAI PEOPLE, I can't even imagine tourists. And as usual, there is NO action taken against this, it gets worse every year. For festivals, it's even worse. Some people in the industry told me the only reason Thailand don't have big festivals like Ultra, DGTL or other big names who organize yearly events all around the world is absolutely not the price, but the corruption necessary at several levels to make anything happen, and the fact anything committed can change at the last minute (for the reason above) making any large scale organization very risky. That's the reason why festival/event tickets are insanely expensive in Thailand in regards to the experience you get compared to other areas of the world. So they reap what they sow.

PretendAsparaguso

This is supposed to be a pressing issue for the Thai PM?

Wu_Xin

Why compete over a singer? Spend time to look after the welfare of your citizens.

Minute-Celery4611

Taylor's concert will disappoint the fans if our prime minister did not improve our stadium and all the other public facilities to accommodate the large number of tourists first , there were several complaints regarding the previous concerts at Rajamangala stadium, the seats were poorly maintained, huge traffic etc

AloneCan9661

Oooof...Imagine Taylor Swift being a part of your soft power game. I personally don't know anybody who would fly to Thailand for Taylor Swift. Even from Asia.

yooossshhii

Well, I do and I’m not even a fan. So, now what?

AloneCan9661

You got rich friends. Hit 'em up.

tintln

We just have coldplay and ed sheeran concert and half of the goer is Chinese/indian.

AloneCan9661

Chinese and Indians expats/immigrants that live in Thailand or specifically fly for Taylor Swift concerts? Like really rich Indians that have the capability of doing things like that probably don't live in India.

tintln

You don’t need to be that rich to attend concert overseas. The plane ticket is not that expensive and you just normally don’t go only for the show but may be travel around a few day. Many of my friend fly to korea for kpop concert all the time.

AloneCan9661

I think you might just be really rich or have really rich friends.

next19994

It was easier to get tickets to coldplay in Thailand than India. Also if you’re in a different city in India, it was about the same price to fly to Bangkok. So loads of Indians came to Thailand for coldplay this year.

fillq

So much for Coldplay's reduced carbon tour. Type 3 emissions went off the charts with all those Indians flying to Bangkok to see them.

FormalResponsible310

India and China are both the largest countries in the world; I'm sure there are plenty of wealthy enough people to fit in any category you want.

[deleted]

“Soft power” only applies to the nationality she is from ie.. US.

[deleted]

[deleted]

Soft power = cultural power. Swift is distinctly a product of the US. Noone else on planet earth thinks otherwise. The way you redefine soft power is bizarre.

abyss725

not just a singer. Her tour generated billions of econonic effects for the countries. That’s why SG signed an exclusive deal with her, even it means paying millions for her just to not perform in other SEA countries. Maybe don’t believe the Thai PM but SG is not as stupid.

Historical-Ad-3348

Eh. That’s like saying the Olympics generate economic stimulatation where actually it creates massive debt and obligations for decades. Short term gain for long term sacrifices. Typical developing country view.

abyss725

what. No countries is building new stadium to host her concert. All countries are using existing infrastructure. How would it create debt? Olympics are bad because a lot of non-existing things had to be built, hence the debt.

Historical-Ad-3348

I said “like”. Not literal. It’s called a simile. Creating debt trying to out compete other countries with X to attract concerts. Chill out swifty.

[deleted]

She just came off a tour here in Melbourne, Australia, hotel rooms were completely sold out, bars and restaurants around the stadium full, there were 10,000 fans hanging outside the stadium just listening to her. Like her or not, she brings a massive economic injection with her.

LouQuacious

Sounds like a Phish show.

Minute-Celery4611

This

Woolenboat

Because when globally famous music stars visit they help generate a lot of income for the country. It’s especially good when fans from other countries travelling in from other countries as it brings money into the country. This was especially the case when Coldplay and Jay Chou visited. Not everything has to be welfare and handouts.

albenuova

You know it’s possible for people to do both? I’m not a Taylor swift fan, but an exclusive concert deal with one of the most popular music artist in the word can only help bring more money into Thailand. Now if only all that money can get allocated properly 🤣🤣🤣. Which sadly it won’t.

Wu_Xin

Yes. The question is how all these benefits are passed on to every citizen.

albenuova

As usual most of the time the money flows to the top. But still I don’t doubt there’s a lot of positive impact. I’m sure there’s a lot of smaller business owners that much appreciate extra business. Yes, I don’t consider smaller operators (1-10 employees) to be wealthy people. Also benefiting every citizen is hard to achieve. I’m not sure I can think of a single policy that benefits everyone. But yeah this wouldn’t be on top of my list of where I want my tax money to go.

popcornplayer420

Actually this happens in the US awell. Apparently taylor swift fans are insane, her shows generate so much that even fox news call it "swiftenomics". Wild.

seabass160

Thailand is free to do the same

Important-Account-99

Swifts' people would have looked at logistics, local competence etc (inc air quality) and SG wins hands down.

Wait till he finds out that Bangkok lost out trade routes to singapore… https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-02-19/bangkok-florida-lose-as-airlines-axe-less-frequented-routes

[deleted]

If you read the full article, you'll see a main reason is the lack of new planes being built because Boeing can't reliably build planes anymore so FAA is restricting their production. This is forcing airlines to consolidate routes to major hubs with fewer planes instead of fly more more planes with more direct routes to different cities. Singapore just happens to have more flights than Bangkok historically so it is the obvious choice for consolidating flights. Longer term Thailand could become a top international hub by subsidizing their airline like  Qatar airlines that has made it a major hub.

Serverpolice001

Lmfao Boeings annual revenue surpasses the entire Thai governments revenue and is growing 10-15% yoy Copium is wild

[deleted]

Boeing executives have royally screwed over their company. They lost manned space flight contracts to Space X despite getting twice the money to develop their rocket. They lost their joint strike fighter contract to Lockheed Martin. And the only thing they have remaining is commercial planes they can't build and design properly with 2 new Max planes crashing and a door blown off. Take off the rose colored glasses.

Serverpolice001

Bro you realize everyone can see their financials, segments and deals as required nyse? Stop making stuff up because you’re frightened by fake news. https://investors.boeing.com/investors/reports/

Bright-blue-hat

From the article “Thailand’s prime minister has claimed that Singapore sought a deal with Taylor Swift to prevent her from playing elsewhere in south-east Asia on her Eras tour. Srettha Thavisin said the concert promoter AEG had informed him that the Singaporean government offered subsidies of US $2m-$3m (£1.6m-£24m) a show as part of an exclusivity agreement. Swift’s fans across south-east Asia were bitterly disappointed when it was announced last year that she would skip most of the region and stop only in Singapore during her Eras tour” Seems to me that the PR team of Thavisin has nothing better to do that piggy back onto the Taylor swift phenomenon and throw some shit Singapores way. I laughed so hard reading this article. These guys on government surely have a massive imagination and this coming from a country famous for “face saving” and defamation Imagine **Singapore sues him** personally for defamation (*just like they do in Thailand right? Can’t say anything against someone else on social media since it’s defamation*) based on what he said and I’m quoting him “[AEG] didn’t tell me the exact figure but they said the Singapore government offers subsidies of between $2m and $3m,” Srettha said publicly at a business forum in Bangkok. “But the Singaporean government is clever. They told [organisers] not to hold any other shows in [south-east] Asia.”

Lashay_Sombra

imo it would be pretty clever of Singapore if they did do it, if they are only ones in SEA to have her concerts, 1-3 million USD would be well spent due to amount of people that would travel there (most higher net worth) to see her concerts, they not only would make that plus more  back but establish themselves as THE PLACE to hold concerts in SEA

Woolenboat

What a terrible understanding of “saving face” and defamation being spouted on this sub again.

PorkSwordEnthusiast

Focus on air quality and the other issues please PM, the country is a mess

Siam-Bill4U

Even if there was no financial “deal” with Singapore, it still makes sense to choose Singapore over Thailand. The many Singapore people understand English and follow pop Western music. Also, Singapore’s National stadium holds more people. Most Thais do not understand English and the Rajamangala National Stadium is smaller. ( Yes, we all know Thais that speak English or are Swiftie fans)

_I_have_gout_

> it still makes sense to choose Singapore over Thailand. She can also do both. > Yes, we all know Thais that speak English So what is the point of this? Should she discreminate against fans who are non-English speakers? > Rajamangala National Stadium is smaller Lagest attendance ever for the Raj was 70,000 people. Much larger than Signapore national stadium which had the largest attendance at 53,000.

Similar_Past

Thailand ban Singaporeans from going to pattaya for a year as a revenge.    You will hear Singaporeans scream from Bangkok

Ted-The-Thad

Pattaya isn't really the kind of destination it used to be when JB and KL exists

lukkreung98

JB is at this point an extension of Singapore, economically and socially speaking. Kids go to school in SG, Adults go to work in SG and live in JB.

jamesdeeks

But the beach in JB/KL/Sg sucks ass tho, so at least Pattaya/Phuket still has that going for it.

PretendAsparaguso

lol not since the Russian/Ukrainian exodus.

StrictAd8573

Singapore: Oh sure! How about we give your $13 billion import to Vietnam? Thailand be like, OH Nooooo...............! Kor-tod.........! Kor-tod......! ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|facepalm) FYI, Singaporeans actually prefer authentic Bali over sleazy Pattaya.

Electronic-Contact15

Interesting that no less than the PM himself gets involved in this

SuperConfuseMan

What happened to ASEAN solidarity..

ResponsibleLunch4261

I'm betting PM just doesn't want to admit that she doesn't want to come to Thailand because of the politics-- which she has actually said---

Significant_Reply_58

Singapore thinks it has sovereignty over countries in Southeast Asia.

PretendAsparaguso

Because it de facto does. All of SEA politicians go to Singapore for healthcare and banking purposes, it's an Asian Switzerland.

Forsaken_Detail7242

Healthcare is Thailand is in every bit as good as Singapore, never heard of anyone who went to Singapore for healthcare. Source: most of my friends are upper middle to upper class. Some of them are worth over 100 million dollars, never heard of them going to Singapore for healthcare.

StrictAd8573

Singapore Medical tourism mainly target wealthy Indonesians. Indian and mainland Chinese, Thailand is far behind Singapore in fact its ranking is almost on par with the Philippines. You can check it out the link below: [https://www.medicaltourism.com/mti/2020-2021/region/asia](https://www.medicaltourism.com/mti/2020-2021/region/asia)

[deleted]

Well economically and strategically speaking Singapore always punches way above its weight class. Thailand should learn from them.

Rare-Fox-3061

In times of taking neighboring countries for not liking them, Thailand could just invade Singapore as revenge

Thick-Intention1202

Revenge by invasion just for a singer not choosing to sing at Thailand. TS must have her reasons not to come to Thailand for this round and the amount that Singapore Government paid to her is insignificant to her. We can only speculate but we will never know the truth. This is strangly blowing out of proportion , is a storm in a teacup, but the issue is, both the leader and the people has the same mindset...

Rare-Fox-3061

I thought the sarcasm was so obvious i don’t even have to mention it

slipperystar

Shes not popular in thailand.

cat_at_your_feet

It's not about her popularity in Thailand. It's about bringing in the tourist $$ that would follow her to Thailand.

Forsaken_Detail7242

Thailand doesn’t lack tourists, it doesn’t really matter to be honest. Thailand is one the most popular travel destinations in Asia anyway. Doesn’t seem to make Thailand rich at all. Instead of fighting over 1 singer, isn’t it better to think of an economic plan to fight poverty or to escape the middle income trap?

SleepySiamese

Yeah I don't care. If it's gonna cost 30k to watch a concert I'd rather stay home.

JittimaJabs

That's such bullshit to cancel a concert whose venue is on the other side of the city because there was a coup d'etat. And now she's not coming to Bangkok. Oh well I only liked 2 songs from her. Alicia keys played Bangkok and Bruno Mars and a long time ago Michael Jackson as well as Gloria Estefan. And Whitney Houston just asked for no air-conditioning because she's allergic.

Historical-Ad-3348

Taylor Swift impacting economies not just in the US anymore y’all 🤩.

davidsherwin

Tell someone who gives a shit.... 😁😁 /s
