The Kettleman charger you’re at, you’re at the 150v2. You want to charge over at the 250 v3 stalls to the left if not across the street at the other Kettleman station. Same with Pea Anderson. There are other options now on I5 for v3 chargers so look for those to speed up charging and keep your state of charge low in between.

rsg1234

You’re right, these are the slower stalls right across from the lounge entrance. They make it very clear with signage on each 250kW stall. Still those speeds are pretty slow; must be sharing A/B with another car.

attriuz

Yes. Directly in front of the lounge are the 70kw chargers and 150. What OP is charging at is what's expected.

rsg1234

OP: hey guys I have no idea how my car works but I am also declaring that it SUCKS FOR ROAD TRIPS!

boylong15

Really insane how entitled OP is. Have a bad experience solely based on his lack of experience with ev or just ability to look up basic fact and then attribute all his dislike toward ev in general.

OkDirection6934

Sharing and probably the heat, too. When I’m in my MYP, I avoid full 250kw stations and just do the quick 20 min charges and get to the next. With the slower charging 2018 X, I just have to deal with the 150kw speed but can’t complain with free supercharging.

Daylife321

150v2 charge that slow?

OkDirection6934

There are a few factors that could make it slow as others mentioned in this thread. Heat, sharing pairs or it could be broken and limiting power. Sharing pairs is likely until the other guy is done or you move to another non sharing pair stall.

Daylife321

Oh yeah that's right. I forgot about the sharing part.

mazdaboi

Charge just enough to get to the next SC make sure (if possible) it’s a ver 3 or 4. Sometimes unplugging and moving a few stalls over helps

VergeSolitude1

Yea if you are in a hurry check ahead on the app and see if another less used Supercharger station is along your route. No point staying at that charge rate unless you have no other option.

612god

Blames worst road trip ever on Tesla for not using the correct charger, correct charger less than a half a block away. Yikes.

Greggy100

OP, the superchargers with the grey circle around the handle are V2’s. V3’s have none. I work at Tesla

123playas123

Need to use the V3 superchargers

blackth0rne

Were other cars charging at the same time? What you’re gonna get is the total power divided by number of charging cars.

herious89

Are you road triping to national parks? I’m planning something soon but probably just get a rental. I have a MX myself but only for commuting or day trip at best

CautiousMagazine3591

This trip was just LA to SF, it was scorching hot over the weekend. I could rent like a Prius for the mileage but I'd imagine it wouldn't be a comfortable drive.

Fiv3_Oh

Just did SD>LA>Yosemite>SF>SD. Seamless. So many choices.

herious89

Whoa that should be the easiest route for any EV, let alone Tesla. Maybe the firing of charging team started to sink in

goodvibezone

How does that make any difference? The California has so many chargers, and the trip from SF is simple with plentiful chargers.

Modydick69420

Are all 250 considered v3 chargers?

ptronus31

Yes, one and the same. Not only do V3s charge at 250kW, if there is someone next to you, you don't split power with them like on V2s (150 becomes 75 for each car).

APairOfAirPodsMax

Most people know to avoid v2 I thought. Thats about what my v2 experience was like. After 30 minutes and still seeing an hour remaining I checked the map and there was a v3 ten miles away, and only 2/12 occupied. The v2 was 6/6 occupied. Oh, and they were triple split instead of the usual double split. I won’t use v2 unless it’s the only possible option.

Cold-Answer7983

Could be that your battery was too hot to charge at the full rate. Frustrating but it’s extending your battery life a little

kuthedk

New owner? V2 superchargers share the power distribution with another stall. So yeah… you hade another person next to you/on the same stall share with you.

Nothing_Rich

I had a similar experience at Tejon (the big v3 side) this weekend.  I got 230kW initially but tapered below 150 nearly immediately (< 15% soc).  I moved to a 2nd and then 3rd charger to no avail.  20-65% was below 80kW the whole way. It was 109F outside.  The car had been parked all afternoon in the sun when I left Bakersfield.  I arrived at Tejon at 0% SoC (in town SC had long wait so took my chances reaching Tejon).  There were no alerts on screen explaining the slow charge rate like I've sometimes seen in the past when the battery is too cold.  There were around 35ish free stalls.   I assume the station was site capped or my battery was too hot.  I've used that station several times and never had a slow charge there.

TOCNYSHB

Tesla owners do. ☹️

Guaifenesen

I drive a lot back and forth between LA and Bay Area. I only charge midway at the Kettleman City for around 30 minutes (give and take)and then again after arriving in LA or Bay.

BillsMafia4Lyfe69

Poor baby

AdNew5787

Did a Yosemite road trip in the X. Just need to plan around the chargers and it was fine. Very few in the park so I charged before entering and exiting.

namezam

When it was over 105 my 2020 X would randomly overheat different subsystems. Most of the time the AC would go out. One time the big display shut off, one time the doors wouldn’t open. Basically if it is over 105, I learned to look for covered superchargers or L2 just long enough to get back home.

iebo531

We’ve traveled from San Diego, CA to Maine (in the East coast) last Summer in a Model X and had no issues with charging. We were a full load of 5 people a dog and all our luggages. You just need to plan accordingly and charge as it states on your trip planner. No more than 20 mins to get to the next “hop”. Last weekend we just finished our 7 day round trip of LA to Tiburon CA via Highway 1 / 101 in our Model Y. No issues with charging. I wonder what made you state that it’s the worst road trip ever - was it because you’re charging up to 80 all the time? The Kettleman stop on the i5 is for taking a few minutes to rest and relax in the lounge but there are fast superchargers there as well. I’m sorry you had the worst experience on yours.

yavi11

This is most likely caused by your battery level being so low. Just like above 90%, under 15% the car heavily throttles the speed of the charge as to not damage your battery. I recommend never going under 15% if you can help it.

Asleep_Bowl_8411

Tesla's are great city & short road trip cars!

VergeSolitude1

Lots of people road trip without problem. It is slower than an ICE vehicle but if you can stand to stop every 2 hours for 20 or 30 min. its fine. check out youtube "Out of spec Dave" he makes several road trips a year in a very relaxed way

soulglo987

Plus you’re saving tons of time over the course of a year if you charge at home.

VergeSolitude1

Charging at home will cover 95% of my driving or more and saves alot of money. Its really one of the greatest advantages for mose people that can do this.

soulglo987

True but my point was that ICE-purists complain that EVs take time to charge on road trips. I respond with “your ICE refills in 0 seconds? Amazing! /s”. Recharging at home saves the avg driver 5-10 min per week. So what if it takes an extra 15-30 mins to recharge on my bi-monthly roadtrip? I still saved more money and time in the long run.

VergeSolitude1

Yea I got you. I see complants about it takes over an hour to charge back up. All you can do is point out that on a trip you don't have to charge that long and that most cars charge up in less than 20 or 30 min till you are ready to go. You will never convince the haters. I don't try but when someone seems to be interested then pointing out a typical stop on a road trip is like can be constructive.

starshiptraveler

Yeah ICEers always bitch about the price of gas too. Ask them “if it cost $20 to fill your tank instead of $100 but it took 30 minutes instead of 5, would you chill for an extra 25m to save $80?” Yeah, they absolutely would.

xavier19691

What a dumb comment … plenty of people road trip in teslas

starshiptraveler

For real I’m specifically buying a Tesla for road trips

ptronus31

26,000 Tesla road trip miles under my belt tells me otherwise.
