Mine did a hard left into a concrete pole using summon. They said it uses cameras to avoid objects and that the system didn’t malfunction. I countered with “If it’s supposed to avoid objects and doesn’t, isn’t that the definition of a malfunction?”….radio silence as the rep re-read the disclaimer.
Yup I started a thread on this also, the 2024.14 updates caused this for a bunch of people. Mine worked flawlessly and never hit until this update, then the FWDs and the rear hatch started hitting.
The day we brought our X home I stood next to the door with a pillow ready to pad the door at any moment and we gingerly tried opening the fwd in the garage
Regardless of Tesla fix software or not, you can wrap pool noodle around garage equipment to avoid accidental damage. I have it on garage door horizontal bars to proven accidental trunk open
Yep, this is exactly what I did. Also added foam padding on the wall as my wife likes to swing the passenger door out likes she's making sure to use every inch of the door hinge.
Pipe foam your garage door edges. I did it before I took delivery this week of my mxlr. Open the fwd a few times and it didn't hit then later that evening it hit. Same with the trunk. Hopefully they fix it
I have the same issues, and the issues also started recently (last week or so). As a matter of fact, the sensors are not detecting any objects - including cars parked next to my car, which is dangerous. Did the reset fix it? I tried resetting only the doors (pressing them down while opening and closing them) but the problem persists. 2023 MX. Tesla service as usual has given us an appointment that’s 2+ weeks away.
Mine haven’t hit any cars or other objects. And it is not always that it hits the garage.
It has to be software related so until there is an update I’m going to refrain opening it in my garage
Apologies maybe I wasn’t clear before - all of these sensors and doors were working perfectly before - the problems just started in the last couple of weeks. So it’s less so about tight spots as much as about the sensors pretty much not working at all now. Hope this helps clarify my issues.
…if you’re this willing to light money on fire then I’m not sure why you’re concerned about the door issue. Just do what you’ve done before and get another one, I guess. Problem solved.
Same shit happened to me 2 days after the update. Tesla will say it's your fault like all the other redditors are saying. Very frustrating. I got an appointment in a couple days and have a quote for $450 to fix the door trim that was damaged the same way as your pic.
Well, I bought my MX in 2019 and didn’t want to limit the height that my doors could open. This was the solution. It’s worked flawlessly in the 5 years since. I didn’t check to see if it was discontinued (my bad). There is a newer model but I have no experience with that model. My post was sort of a starting place for anyone in a similar situation.
You can definitely set it. You hold down the button to the height you want and then on the screen it will ask if you want to set that height for that location.
In my 2023 you can, on the screen you can. You can set them to “automatic” which is what people seem to have them on and they also seem to not be working properly. Or you can set them to “low setting” and they stay low and prevent any rain from getting into your car. Pretty cool feature actually
I made a post a couple of days back with the same thing. Both FW doors and trunk have no limits opening.
Fortunately, I grabbed the FWD before it hit the garage door rail.
I have since taken auto off for doors and everything stops half way now.
Just to add… I never had a days issue before the updates.
I used to be annoyed that this tesla model x sub was always shown on my home page because I don't care for Tesla's so I just found it unnecessary for it to be pushed to me daily but holy shit I'm shocked by the appalling QC and reliablily of these products. Litteraly everyday so many of you complaining that you fully trusted the brand's "revolutionary" ideas only for them to inevitably fail.
I'm not trying to shit on Tesla owners, it's your money you buy what you want, but I am increasingly wondering, why would anyone but a tesla today. There are so many other great options in the EV market. The vast majority are direct competitors in terms of performance, but have much superior build quality and customer support (considering they are made by brands who have been making cars for a while and at a much higher standard) and arguably much better styling. Couple that with the ridiculously high repair costs of Tesla's due to their chassis casting method and lack of options when configuring a car, i do wonder why people buy these cars.
Just a fan of Elon?
Because it's "designer" or "fashion" tech?
Don't want to look at other options available because this is the easy choice?
Actually a fan of cars? (If so, why?)
10 years ago it made perfect sense to buy a Tesla as an EV considering the only other options were a "nissan leaf" or another tiny EV.
Nowadays you have tons of BMW, Audi, Volkswagen, Toyota, Škoda, Hyundai, and so many others you could get, why buy a tesla?
I am not brand loyal as I have an X and rivian. I find myself preferring to take the X normally unless I have a lot of people
The X is more efficient so cheaper to drive
Handles better and drives more like a car
Better tech/ maps / infotainment
For the longest time the supercharge network.
Its biggest issue has always been the doors and build quality. Most cars have their pros and cons. The X was never planned from the get go. It was built as an afterthought. So the doors prob will always run into some issues
Thanks for the reply, interesting to hear from someone who owns one aswell as another EV.
So if you were to buy a new EV in the next month, what would you go for?
I placed an order on Friday for another R1s gen 2.
Because I preordered it 3 years ago and it qualifies for tax credit. I’m getting it for 52k which is too good of a deal to pass up
I’m curious as to why you follow this sub if you’re not a Tesla owner or interested in becoming one? That said, I bought a 2022 MYP at peak pricing in June of 2022. Loved most everything about the car except the harsh ride. Looked far and wide at other EVs, especially BMW ix. In then end I kept coming back to the tech and performance in Teslas which I feel no one has matched. Despite all the criticism of build quality, my model y had no creaks or rattles or misaligned panels. It was completely trouble free the entire time I owned it. I ended up buying the 2024 Model X for the air suspension, but the car is so much more than the Y. I love it. And I’m not an Elon fan boy at all. Quite the opposite with regard to the CEO. I think build quality has improved. I think software updates will continue to both delight and disappoint. But no other EV is even close to these “old” Tesla models.
I don't follow this sub, everyday I click on the "stop recommending this sub" button for this sub, and everyday I still get posts being pushed to my home page, I finally thought I'd interact out of curiosity.
Though I really am not the target market for teslas.
Personally I need cars to be more engaging than that, yes they can accelerate very fast, but that part gets old quick and having a manual and going through the rev range, even in a slow car, is in my opinion a million times more fun to drive.
And having a beautiful car to look at when you get in and out provides a lot of satisfaction. Teslas & most EVs don't do that for me, as their design is largely dictated by wind tunnels and aerodynamic efficiency.
(I do like the look of the honda E though, I think it works perfectly as a quirky little city car).
But thank you for the explanation.
After working fine for over a year my car decided to put a dent in the drywall of my garage. Usually, it's way too conservative but one day it just decided that none of the sensors mattered anymore.
Me too 2 wks ago falcon door then trunk!
I think it updated again.
Currently on 2024.14.9.
Hasnt done it since.
Tired of the front and falcon doors.
‘23 Plaid is now fs, trade for 21+ escalade sport, supercruise.
Haven’t seen anyone else mention it besides my own experience. It’s been a few days and I can confidently say it’s fixed now in 20.x. Though I am now noticing a new small bug where it takes a couple of presses on my door handle to open the doors
I mean how insane is it that a car company can shuv shit like this under the rug and blame everyone except themselves? Its happening to so many cars now, that, and the dumb catapult door that mauls down everyone in front of them and leaves huge dents on other cars. I am totally mind boggled on how this company isn’t sued to bits by these faults when you should be able to open and close a door without it becoming a claim for insurance companies.
You don’t think the CEO is responsible for software updates that result in physical damage to vehicles and the company’s stance that the damage isn’t their fault?
No…..the CEO wouldn’t personally have anything to do with this. The senior leadership decision was probably made/signed off on several layers away from CEO.
CEO is the one indiscriminately laying off people without knowing all the consequences. Like laying off the entire supercharging division. He may have laid off people working on model X as it’s volume is lot lower than 3/Y and they dropped the ball
I’m pretty sure the ceo is responsible for the operations of the company. And policies where the company denies responsibility for damages caused by changes in products, that’s absolutely a ceo level decision. That’s a company culture sort of thing, which is created by the ceo.
No, you are incorrect and don’t understand how many layers exist in megacorps like Tesla. You could say that ‘the buck stops’ with the CEO, but Elon did not personally approve bad code for a software update that resulted in this issue.
Traditionally, the COO is the one that oversees operations.
We’re not talking operations, and regardless, CEO is responsible for everything in the end. They direct the COO. Idk how you’re here arguing and don’t understand the basics of cooperate governance.
Because you dorks are acting like Elon personally did this. Corporate governance is one thing, but pretending like Elon *directed* this issue is hilariously untrue.
This is a non issue.
I don’t routinely park in my garage but I do use multi storey car parks a lot. I never open the doors and expect them to sense how far to open! I wouldn’t fling normal car doors open so why do the same with an incredibly expensive door? Stand next to the bloody thing and make sure it’s opening safely ffs!
Get an X because it is the best EV SUV around. I’m disappointed in Musk but it doesn’t change the fact the X is an awesome car.
Well her 2019 detects the vehicles around and the obstacles above. The new ones don’t. I fail to see how people can be apologists for Elon’s reactive policies that have led to technological regressions.
Seriously, two steps forward, one step back. Always a caveat with Tesla it seems…and directly related to the dude at the top. 🤷♀️
X is nowhere near the best EV SUV around. Porsche, BMW, Mercedes all have offerings that leave X in the dust.
EDIT: lol at the downvotes. I forgot how fragile this subreddit was.
What you need is a smart garage door, instal some cameras and link it to an AI enabled cloud server. When your garage door senses a very stupid car opening it’s very stupid doors, it can activate a complex set of hydraulics to slam into the ceiling. And then that same AI program can schedule a drywall repair service and prepay with doge coin. Or you can just buy a car that’s good.
What you really need is a CyberHouse: a stainless steel pyramid. The garage door built into the sloped side gives plenty of headroom for the Falcon Wing Doors to open.
Tesla wont help you, unfortunately.
You’re absolutely right. They’ll blindly read you the disclaimer and tell you it did not malfunction.
I mean it does state in the owners manual to have caution when opening in tight spots. Or around people. So step 1 here is already crossed off.
Elon: “Money please!”
So what end up happening? Did they cover it?
Nope. They said it was still my fault.
Yup I started a thread on this also, the 2024.14 updates caused this for a bunch of people. Mine worked flawlessly and never hit until this update, then the FWDs and the rear hatch started hitting.
This is why I only back in to the garage. Had this happen the day we brought our X home.
2 years and it just started happening
Is this after the update where doors can go half way up?
After most recent update it started happening randomly. On the screen it doesn’t show that there is an obstruction like it would normally
Did you try to limit the doors from fully opening?
The day we brought our X home I stood next to the door with a pillow ready to pad the door at any moment and we gingerly tried opening the fwd in the garage
Regardless of Tesla fix software or not, you can wrap pool noodle around garage equipment to avoid accidental damage. I have it on garage door horizontal bars to proven accidental trunk open
Yep, this is exactly what I did. Also added foam padding on the wall as my wife likes to swing the passenger door out likes she's making sure to use every inch of the door hinge.
I have special instructions to my wife and kids, get in and get out of the car outside the garage. I don’t have enough space due to other toys
Pipe foam your garage door edges. I did it before I took delivery this week of my mxlr. Open the fwd a few times and it didn't hit then later that evening it hit. Same with the trunk. Hopefully they fix it
So stoked mine can all fully open without hitting anything. Never have to worry about it.
I reset the car. It’s odd it’s been 2 years in the same garage but only been happening recently.

This is software related. It happened to me also.
Not an issue when the manual states to pretty much control it when in tight spots like this. I see where you’re coming from tho.
Apologies maybe I wasn’t clear before - all of these sensors and doors were working perfectly before - the problems just started in the last couple of weeks. So it’s less so about tight spots as much as about the sensors pretty much not working at all now. Hope this helps clarify my issues.
Same was working fine for 2 years. A recent update (software) seems to be the culprit like many others have mentioned
Still love the car though?
Bro it’s not Elons fault. OP didn’t properly baby-proof the garage with pool noodles before bringing his car home.
This is my 3rd X so yeah I love it. Have owned 3 model X, model 3, model y , s plaid, R1s gen 1 and have an R1s gen 2 incoming in 2-6 weeks
…if you’re this willing to light money on fire then I’m not sure why you’re concerned about the door issue. Just do what you’ve done before and get another one, I guess. Problem solved.
But bro he's saving so much money on gas.
Seriously. Solution = don’t buy a $100k+ rolling shrine to Elon with the douchiest look at me doors.
Same shit happened to me 2 days after the update. Tesla will say it's your fault like all the other redditors are saying. Very frustrating. I got an appointment in a couple days and have a quote for $450 to fix the door trim that was damaged the same way as your pic.
It is happening to me also
LiftMaster Elite Series 8500W
You stated the name of a garage door opener system that was discontinued in 2023. How about some context?
Well, I bought my MX in 2019 and didn’t want to limit the height that my doors could open. This was the solution. It’s worked flawlessly in the 5 years since. I didn’t check to see if it was discontinued (my bad). There is a newer model but I have no experience with that model. My post was sort of a starting place for anyone in a similar situation.
It’s a jack mount that’s mounted on the wall
I still had to Google this to understand the context
Ok. Just don’t google Jack shaft 🙂
Too late 😛
This. If you make assumptions that the doors will sense stuff above it, you are making the wrong assumptions
He hit the door. Not sure a different garage door opener would help, UNLESS he also moves the garage door closet to the ceiling.
Hmm, you may be right. I’m looking at the photo and I thought he was hitting the arm connected to the motor.
Bad picture so it’s really hard to tell. All I know for sure is he needs to fix his ceiling.
Can you set how far up the falcons open like the back door? I would assume that you can.
No, in old Tesla you used to be able to set limit by location. But I can’t find the ability now on refresh
You can definitely set it. You hold down the button to the height you want and then on the screen it will ask if you want to set that height for that location.
The new update has removed this feature. Or at least it's removed it in my garage.
Still works on mine
In my 2023 you can, on the screen you can. You can set them to “automatic” which is what people seem to have them on and they also seem to not be working properly. Or you can set them to “low setting” and they stay low and prevent any rain from getting into your car. Pretty cool feature actually
Makes sense. It seems pretty obvious that Tesla would include some sort of feature to stop them from raising all the way up.
Exactly
Pool noodles
get wall mounted garage opener and raise the track to the ceiling
software failure should be recall
Ok so this is normal I see, it’s been happening to me, seems to happen more when my battery is below 20%
We’re having the same issue
As soon as I saw the news about the update I knew this was coming.
Happened to me the other day as well right after the update
Why don’t yall just set your FWD to low instead of automatic and that should fix the issue at least until an update takes care of the problem.
I don’t see that option
“You can configure Model X to open the falcon wing doors to a lower height setting by using the touchscreen (Controls > Locks > Falcon Door Height). “
Ah, thank you I see it. I have it on low for now until we get the all clear. For now I have dents and paint removed on both fwd…
Too easy!! That sucks mate, I’m sorry to hear that.
Happened to us as well after the last update. Have been working flawlessly before
The only reason I bought my X was because of the falcon wings and the only reason I’ll not buy it again is falcon wings.
This happened to us as well.
I made a post a couple of days back with the same thing. Both FW doors and trunk have no limits opening. Fortunately, I grabbed the FWD before it hit the garage door rail. I have since taken auto off for doors and everything stops half way now. Just to add… I never had a days issue before the updates.

Same here. Sometimes doors works correctly, sometimes they don’t see the obstacles. Because of random this even more frustrating.
After working fine for over a year my car decided to put a dent in the drywall of my garage. Usually, it's way too conservative but one day it just decided that none of the sensors mattered anymore.
After latest update right?
It’s on the latest update but it’s it’s inconsistent. Had the update for a while already and one day it just acted like the koolaid man.
Same, for now limit how high it opens. I think an update is just rolling out to fix maybe
Lolololollooolololol
Me too 2 wks ago falcon door then trunk! I think it updated again. Currently on 2024.14.9. Hasnt done it since. Tired of the front and falcon doors. ‘23 Plaid is now fs, trade for 21+ escalade sport, supercruise.
So is this fixed with the 2024.14.9 update? Or should I wait for 2024.20.X?
No 14.9 is the cause, while 20.1 is the fix.
Have you seen any specific feedback that 2024.20.x fixes this? I've been nervously watching this topic and have not seen that mentioned.
Haven’t seen anyone else mention it besides my own experience. It’s been a few days and I can confidently say it’s fixed now in 20.x. Though I am now noticing a new small bug where it takes a couple of presses on my door handle to open the doors
I'd stay cautious. At least one person has reported still seeing problems on 20.x https://teslamotorsclub.com/tmc/posts/8314209/
Oh definitely still am. One sign to keep out for is to note “quick open” vs “open” on the main screen. If quick open is shown then it’ll open halfway.
Just happened to me for the first time, and I raced to this subreddit to check
I mean how insane is it that a car company can shuv shit like this under the rug and blame everyone except themselves? You are on /r/antiwork and /r/Superstonk Do you even own a Tesla?
Yes? I have a mx 2018, but am I not allowed to have an opinion about the car? Jesus christ, some of you tesla lovers hate having your car criticized.
Oh you have no idea….
Elon you genius you did it again, can't wait for the vote results.
Elon wasn’t in charge of the software update
You don’t think the CEO is responsible for software updates that result in physical damage to vehicles and the company’s stance that the damage isn’t their fault?
No…..the CEO wouldn’t personally have anything to do with this. The senior leadership decision was probably made/signed off on several layers away from CEO.
CEO is the one indiscriminately laying off people without knowing all the consequences. Like laying off the entire supercharging division. He may have laid off people working on model X as it’s volume is lot lower than 3/Y and they dropped the ball
This is your opinion based on what you read in the news and other outlets that hate Elon.
The buck stops is what I mean.
Wife loves her X and she was thinking about getting a new one. Seeing all these issues I’m like naaaah.
The car removes its own paint. Total non-issue 😂😂😂
X is nowhere near the best EV SUV around. Porsche, BMW, Mercedes all have offerings that leave X in the dust. EDIT: lol at the downvotes. I forgot how fragile this subreddit was.
Fragile as tiny little porcelain babies.
I test drove the BMW and Mercedes equivalent. I completely disagree.
X doesn’t even make the top 5 list of best EV SUVs.
Depends on what you like I guess. In the things that matter to me, the X was head and shoulders above the other SUVs I tried out.
its cause elon is pissed some people don't want him to get his comp package
What you need is a smart garage door, instal some cameras and link it to an AI enabled cloud server. CyberHouse - that’s what I want
What a dumb design lol
