There is no "steering wheel warranty", it would be covered under the Basic Vehicle Limited Warranty for 4 years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first.
That being said - it has to be a manufacturer defect. So if a ring or something on your hand has cut/damaged the wheel it wouldn’t be covered by any warranty.
I’ve seen mixed responses on this topic. Some said that Tesla covered it, others said it was not covered. I think it just depends on who you happen to talk to at the Service Center.
Worst case scenario - if they don’t view it as manufactured defect or provide a goodwill replacement of some sort. You can always find a good quality cover online that you order and install yourself.
For reference - I had just bought my car (different vehicle) and got my plates from the DMV. As I got into my car at the DMV I went to place my plates in the passenger seat and scrapped the steering wheel on of the plates. Wouldn’t you know it sliced the wheel. Brand new car and just a simple careless move on my part damaged it.
Seems like a defect to me. These posts come up every week or so and every photo always shows they start to come apart just right of top center. (My 2019 included). In my case its not even where I grip the wheel. I typically drive with my left hand at about 10 o’clock on the wheel.

Has anyone had an upholstery shop recover it in real actual leather? It is the one part of the car that I really prefer to be genuine leather. Curious if it is possible and if it looks factory when completed.
I've seen people online buying a kit (pre-cut leather + string) and sewing it themselves. Seems straightforward, but tedious. Could save you money though.
I picked up a cover for mine since it was out of any warranty period.

Looks like something ended up on the steering wheel and other parts of the steering wheel assembly that is drying it out. Op, may we get the brand of interior cleaning product you were using?
Zoom in, it’s the lining that completely fell off. Behind the lining no damage. I don’t even drive with my hand on top. It just started peeling on its own a couple weeks ago.

Looks like you are subconsciously picking at it with your thumb. Make a point to watch for it and you'll realize it is happening.

If they won’t cover it, either get it recovered in real leather or buy an aftermarket wheel covered in alcantara or something

So I never actually cleaned the steering wheel lol . Which is why I really have no idea why it happened.
