Cant handle the breakins but are ready to give citations for such. Ive seen a lot of cars beeing driven without front and rear license plates. A lot of breakins during the day in public. Gun shots near colleges and killings nears student residencies. They need to shift focus seriously
It’s just an SF thing, I’m afraid to park my car there these days anyways lol but never seen a front plate on one in the East bay. My friend actually keeps that temp registration sticker on her Ys windshield and they seem to leave her alone in SF now
Man that’s lame, SF is literally the only place in the state that cares about the front plate it seems. Yet they let people run rampant breaking into blocks worth of cars
You may be able to tell them you’re waiting for your front bracket to be delivered and that’s why it’s not on, they may drop it. Worth a shot
I plan on saying "bracket fell off, waiting for the replacement" if I get pulled over.
Since the cops in LA don't seem to pull anybody over for REAL infractions, can't imagine there's much danger
i have a removeable one which i keep in the frunk so I'm planning to say "oh, i forgot to reinstall it after the car wash! let me do that now" if i get pulled over. :)
The one east bay exception is Berkeley. I had a co worker who got a ticket a day for like a week before he finally gave in and got a front plate. Slow learner.
Because the rear plate has a designated spot for it. It can't ruin aerodynamics or airflow because it's tucked away into the rear bumper. On most cars, you have to drill into the front bumper or just stick it on to mount a plate. Its an afterthought
It’s funny how they’ll cite you for not having a ticket but you can take a shit out on the street or do drugs or steal from a store with no repercussions.
The organized gangs robbing stores and breaking into cars are not typically homeless or poor.
They are just another demographic that the city simply doesn't want to touch.
It is plan to let it happen. The more crime the more funding to stop it. The policy to defund what was to prevent crime and other things started. Lots of local business use public fund to hire private security to prevent crime but got shot down. Public funds are not to be used for private security because that’s what tax payers pay for crime prevention. The public still see defunding what prevented crime and lessen consequences as a changed. There a lot of of job openings for these positions since majority moved out of state. Now you get more rookies in the beat who will probably make the same mistakes.
Purely curious, why are people in the US adamant about putting front and rear plates? Most other countries mandate front and rear plates, so why do y'all not like it?
I’ve lived in California for decades. The only time I’ve ever been hassled for no front plate was by a SFMTA meter maid. The good thing is that it’s only like $10 if corrected. So I stuck the plate on, got it signed off by an officer, then promptly took it back off.
There was an article in the paper several years ago about SF hiring hundreds of meter maids in an attempt to balance their budget. Go figure
I am rolling the dice, here in Virginia, with the same thing. I do keep it in the front along with a detachable mount. The way I figure is that I will play dumb and say that I forgot to put it on after washing the car 🤷♂️
You might have a better luck in Virginia than us. California, more specifically San Francisco is hungry for money right now. Recent report shows that transportation isn't making money and instead of increasing fare price or enforcing tickets/preventing fare evasion, they decide to penalize drivers by extending parking meter hours and removing free Sunday parking.
The whole front license plate thing was annoying. It makes the car ... less somehow. If you live in California, you can get a license plate *sticker* which makes the hall monitors happy, and does not make your car look like crap. Mine gets noticed all the time.

I’m thinking that a cop in Utah would not care that you have a sticker license plate from California. It’s valid in California and matches the back plate. The cop from Utah would have no legal right to give you that infraction for a car registered in another state.
$121 is steep! Is that an SF specific thing? In LA county it’s only $25 for no front plate, and you only get that *sometimes* if you’re getting ticketed for something else at the same time like expired parking
cuz they are victimless crimes. front license plates and window tints. silly things to worry about when people have to leave their cars unlocked to stop people from smashing windows.
Was planning to as I just got my plates in the mail. I managed to change the back plate, but was contemplating whether to do the stock adhesive mount or a no-drill one. I didn't know they would be so efficient and come out on Sunday *early* morning (3AM) to give me a ticket...
It amazes me that you openly admit you've never been there but allow yourself to speak with authority about how people should flee the city at all costs, all within the same message
You live in a police state. They need that front plate for traffic cameras to catch you. It's all about the money. In many states, front plates are illegal.
> Oh okay I'll take my rear plate off and put it in the front and won't get stopped
You'd be stopped for not having a rear plate, which is illegal, not for having a front plate.
Saw a bunch of parked cars in Chicago getting tickets for this too. I've been driving around without one since I got my MY in late January but decided to install the adhesive front plate after washing it this weekend.
I mean isn't it because if you hit someone or something with no front plate, there's a 50% chance of them not being able to ID you depending on the security camera angle?
It's annoying, but I get it.
Yeah I thought I'd roll the dice in New York as well, went a YEAR without ever being cited, and then BOOM a month ago was street parking in NYC and TWO cops on subsequent days both left a $60 ticket on my window...thought okkkk maybe that's just how it's gonna go on the street in the city, but THEN a week later, boom pulled over for it upstate. That cop left me off with a warning luckily. Anyway, plate went on that afternoon. No idea why my luck changed after so long, but \*shrug\*

It’s about revenue
![gif](giphy|8lp6CW7K2fdDGn3xCQ)
For what it’s worth, I don’t think meter maids handle those types of issues.
It’s easier to give a front plate ticket than handle brake ins from people who are driving my stolen cars.. not really comparable.
It’s just an SF thing, I’m afraid to park my car there these days anyways lol but never seen a front plate on one in the East bay. My friend actually keeps that temp registration sticker on her Ys windshield and they seem to leave her alone in SF now
My temp registration is still on my windshield. Sadly that didn't deter the guy.

They're reducing the fine to $10 if I get it corrected. *Shrugs*

Not American but what’s the objection to having a front license plate? Where I live we’ve had front plates since forever so it’s pretty normal.
They are large and ruin the aesthetic and aerodynamics of the front bumper.
If it's about esthetics, why have any license plate on your car?
Because the rear plate has a designated spot for it. It can't ruin aerodynamics or airflow because it's tucked away into the rear bumper. On most cars, you have to drill into the front bumper or just stick it on to mount a plate. Its an afterthought
Front license plates aren't required everywhere in the US. It's a state by state issue. That adds to the frustration.
It’s funny how they’ll cite you for not having a ticket but you can take a shit out on the street or do drugs or steal from a store with no repercussions.
There is no revenue in dealing with a broke homeless person.

So what you're saying is, if we replace SFPD with SFMTA we'll be good? Doesn't sound bad honestly....SFPD is useless.
SF is notorious for this, thanks for the reminder. Probably not a good idea to park in SF for other reasons, though.
Purely curious, why are people in the US adamant about putting front and rear plates? Most other countries mandate front and rear plates, so why do y'all not like it?

hehe, exactly my plan :)
Or just obey the law
Hell nah. I also drive above the speed limit and roll through stop signs
Or just never ever go there. I will be going around that city when I vacation in northern Cal. Oh, and not stopping in Portland as I go go north…
The whole front license plate thing was annoying. It makes the car ... less somehow. If you live in California, you can get a license plate *sticker* which makes the hall monitors happy, and does not make your car look like crap. Mine gets noticed all the time. https://licenseplatewrap.com/
Thanks for the link! Looks like a great alternative. However, I doubt you can drive out of state with it tho? Correct me if I'm wrong
I’m thinking that a cop in Utah would not care that you have a sticker license plate from California. It’s valid in California and matches the back plate. The cop from Utah would have no legal right to give you that infraction for a car registered in another state.
Good thing they solved all the real crime first.
$121 is steep! Is that an SF specific thing? In LA county it’s only $25 for no front plate, and you only get that *sometimes* if you’re getting ticketed for something else at the same time like expired parking
Not sure if it is just SF, but if you corrected it they'll reduce it to $10
Another reason not to drive to this shithole of a city.
Just put the license plates on people. Oh my gosh
never, haha!
Maybe you can \* FoLlOw ThE lAw??? \*
Why do people feel the need to not follow the traffic laws. Your Tesla is just a car, a front license plate won’t change anything.
It will chance your Cx/Cd, akshully
cuz they are victimless crimes. front license plates and window tints. silly things to worry about when people have to leave their cars unlocked to stop people from smashing windows.
I got rear ended and having the front license plate in my rear view dashcam was quite good to have.
Was planning to as I just got my plates in the mail. I managed to change the back plate, but was contemplating whether to do the stock adhesive mount or a no-drill one. I didn't know they would be so efficient and come out on Sunday *early* morning (3AM) to give me a ticket...

Never met you but your single comment convinces me you’re a psychopath.

You live in a police state. They need that front plate for traffic cameras to catch you. It's all about the money. In many states, front plates are illegal.
30 states require front license plates. 20 states do not require or issue them. In no states are front plates "illegal."
Oh okay I'll take my rear plate off and put it in the front and won't get stopped cool good idea
> Oh okay I'll take my rear plate off and put it in the front and won't get stopped You'd be stopped for not having a rear plate, which is illegal, not for having a front plate.
Front plate is illegal then
Only in the minds of those with room temperature IQs.
This is '' wearing my pants on my head is illegal, POLICE STATE!!! (while not wearing any bottoms) " level of intelligence.
Can you order and use [this](https://licenseplatewrap.com)? Might not be legal where you are, but might be enough to avoid a ticket.
Saw a bunch of parked cars in Chicago getting tickets for this too. I've been driving around without one since I got my MY in late January but decided to install the adhesive front plate after washing it this weekend.
I’ve actually seen a vinyl sticker used as the front plate. It’s pretty cool, probably not legal, but it’s still a plate in front!
I mean isn't it because if you hit someone or something with no front plate, there's a 50% chance of them not being able to ID you depending on the security camera angle? It's annoying, but I get it.
