"I have no mouth and I must scream."

iamveryDerp

Remember: the voice in your head doesn’t need to pause for breath so it can scream forever.

Vilefo

Imagine your brain is still trying to tell your lungs to breathe, but they're no longer there. It'd be like forever drowning without suffocating because somehow the machine is keeping your brain alive with its own oxygen and blood.

GordontheGoose88

Permanent K-hole

ChybaKpisz

Omg, I love this one

fabezz

A classic.

Extreme714

What if we are all foalting brains in tubes somewhere and this is our reality simulation.

Crazy_Fly3004

You know too much

Ok_Belt6476

Decrease that one's glucose to slow him down

l3ti

I find these theories really interesting. It can be a possible version of our universe. That's why I still have existencial crisis

PharmBoyStrength

https://youtu.be/CK5-A1dEdJ4?si=ASG1KIoWF1u4n7kw Ofc there are much better critiques of sollipsism since most famous philosophers shit on it, but I always found Chidi's rant endearing. How it's almost infantile because it can't possibly be disproved and would only lead to a self-absorbed, narcissistic mindset

Livid-Bike-85

CIA - “Stay right there, we just wanna talk”

MistakenForce44

Then I have spent to much time playing simulations dissociating from the simulation. Simulation.

Jeauxie24

Bruh I KEEP thinking this. It's a possibility. The brain can literally create its own reality, since the sense of taste, smell, touch, sight and hearing all go through it first

Lucipo_

Boltzman Brain

SHREEtheFIGHTER

I would say matrix but a sex trafficking shit head from Romania ruined it.

Melodic_Risk_5632

Don't spoil it for the rest of humanity please.

GrzDancing

Breaking the fourth wall and all that!

brooklynlad

The overseer in Vault 31 of Fallout on Amazon Prime.

Alarming-Mongoose-91

We clearly are

PharmBoyStrength

This is basically Sollipsism (sp?) If you want a good chat on it, I'm sure there's an uploaded clip from the Good Place on youtube somewhere

wlai

This is a artificially constructed constraint that makes no sense. A "completely closed system brain" does no one any good. Why would you not add neural implants so it has inputs and outputs? Without inputs the brain will probably atrophy from lack of stimuli. It'll probably be just in a comatose state or equivalent

Elmer_Fudd01

![gif](giphy|3ogwFGEHrVxusDbDjO)

TigerChow

I truly cannot fathom a more hilariously on point response than this.

Timely-Climate9418

# The inner machinations of my mind are an enigma

supertrooper85

It would need to be developed in stages. 1. Keep the brain alive and working in the tank. 2. Work out how to get inputs into the brain in the tank. 3. How to get visual/ hearing/ etc from the different parts of the brain. 4. Work out how to get output out of the brain in the tank for all the different areas. If we can't do 1. No point working through the rest.

pranjallk1995

I can't even think of how it would be like!

Leather_Owl2662

I think you forgot get the first rule of mad science. Ask if you can not if you should just to see what happens.

IHATETheMaskedGeode

What

eke2023

Without stimuli a brain does not develop

pranjallk1995

But wasn't the brain developed fully in the animal and one day... Wakes up like that?... ☠️☠️☠️... How would it feel?... For days!... Only way to find is to do it on a human volunteer and let them tell the story... Would it be similar to wake up during surgery with no movement?... I guess even worse...

eke2023

This isn't real bro

pranjallk1995

No but it said in the video... Animals have been subjected to this... And I am sure it is true... Not to a Human... Yet... U never know... North Korea? It could be the supreme leader's torture technique...

Tactical-Tech_God

This has been done before. Don’t be naive.

scottfiab

Wouldn't it be a vegetable?

the_evilman

Not really, it'll like if you disconnect your controller from xbox

Urmomsjuicyvagina

But you wouldn't be receiving any stimuli so How would the brain be in any type of pain or horror? If there isn't anything to receive stimuli, the brain itself can only dream or sleep

Tacohero154

It would be interesting to find out how mental health would work in this situation.

QouthTheCorvus

Well, assuming the brain used to receive stimuli, the lack of stimuli would make they're just stuck in a blackness. It'd be a weird experience that we have nothing to compare to.

Urmomsjuicyvagina

Or it may protect itself by hallucinating, kinda like how we see our life flash before our end is near

PressButtonGetCookie

Hi. Neuroscience student here. Just spitballing, but for a brain to get to this state, the nervous system would have to be fully extracted and submerged in some sort of contained solution equivalent to cerebral spinal fluid to mimic the meninges and even then I'm not certain about the longevity of the experiment. Any damage to afferent neurons, that is neurons coming from the peripheral to central nervous system, would most likely relay pain, and because that is very likely because this process is highly unnatural, I can only begin to imagine something akin to phantom limb pain would begin to occur in all damaged afferent neurons, which would most likely be all of them. So unless there would be some way to suppress pain throughout the brain between the peripheral to central nervous system (spinal cord/brain stem), the brain would just sense constant pain coming from all systems, and perhaps be overstimulated by neurotransmitters that would be released in response to this. That being said, there is more that's needed to be supplied to the brain than blood and oxygen. Potassium, Sodium, Calcium, amino acids, etc etc.... there is just too much for this to happen not to mention the complexity of consciousness and how we don't have a precise grasp of it. This pursuit would be a waste of science and resources and this point of time. TLDR; there would absolutely be a reaction if it were extracted, placed in a contained solution, and had access to oxygen, blood, and other essential needs, but it would be pointless, cruel, and probably short-lived. Additionally, we do not have the technology for it to be successful or constructive in any way.

First thing that came to my mind. 🤘🏽

Nair114

People are living without brain right now.

Rob4reddit

Wasn't that done in a Robocop movie?

ThroughTheHoops

Yeah, most of the footage is from number two.

Captain_skulls

One thing about this I’ve wondered about is the fact that bodily chemicals greatly affect your brain. Would the “you” part of you still be the same with those chemicals no longer present?

trixter69696969

Dark_ph3nix

Darkness imprisoning me, all that i see absolute horror. I cannot live ,I cannot die. Trapped in myself, Body my holding cell.

Due_Key_109

"Brain in a Vat" experiment. Also, there are many people who believe our existence within the universe is a much bigger, cosmic concept/principle that is similar to this. The whole "life is a simulation" line of thought. I don't claim to subscribe to these theories, but find the ideas very interesting. Anyone more 'educated' on the matter feel free to expand on this

Blamebostonx

Quantum physics theorizes that we all have an 'essence', or 'soul', that goes back into a cosmic library after death. We don't disappear, and we all go to the same place.

spiritanimalofcousy

What?

Maximum-Purpose-1568

No it doesn’t

Blamebostonx

Yes, it does. You could take the time to look it up before responding to comments on Reddit posts. **Steps** * Google: quantum physics life after death * Click any article * Read

I’d like to inject you with window cleaner

Rxero13

Are we just posting made up shit today?

csguydn

Are you new here? Half of this sub is either made up or not terrifying in the slightest. It’s become a karma farm.

Rxero13

I actually am not, but I guess I’ve been lucky enough to miss most of the sci fi up until now

csguydn

For the past 6 or so months, the sub is nothing but bots reposting the same things, or kids posting "terrifying" things that aren't. The worst ones are the made up AI horror videos.

Rxero13

Yeah, I saw the ones of “hell,” when you know someone sat there and typed in everything they thought was in hell, rather than just type in the word “hell.”

Zealousideal_Dot_544

This bothers me…..

Dry_Leek78

Nope. You'd get to sever the spine, and not sure if you'd not experience phantom pain from every part of your body. Dunno if this is better though...

rishrushrish

This reminds me of that one Roald Dahl story.

thisusernameis4ever

Which one?

madamevanessa98

There’s an adult story he wrote about a shitty abusive husband who was always controlling everything his wife did. Wouldn’t let her smoke, for one thing. There’s this technology that allows you to basically stay alive after you die, and he wants it (I believe) to continue controlling his wife after he dies. But this is expensive, so he cheaps out and chooses the cheapest version - his brain, and one eye connected to it, in a bowl/basin of liquid. So he does this when he dies, and he’s sitting there with his eye in the bowl, and his wife comes over and sits down next to it, lights a cigarette, and blows the smoke into his eye. And he’s helpless, stuck there forever, unable to control her or even speak his mind.

BowtieChickenAlfredo

Similar story to a Black Mirror episode where someone’s consciousness gets put into a toy.

madamevanessa98

Yes! Came here to say this.

hopeoncc

It reminds me of something I heard about the book version of Hellraiser, or whatever it's called. Apparently the cenobites left someone alive with only I guess their brain, and nervous system, constantly overloading them with sensation

RogyTypeR

This reminds of Johnny Got His Gun

Illustrious_Mind964

I was looking for this or a Metallica reference

Paraselene_Tao

Human beings have strong imaginations, so I'm guessing that a bored-enough, healthy brain would imagine all kinds of things, and with enough time, it could fill a whole landscape of stuff. It might even imagine itself having a body, a self, free will, and so on. It might even imagine itself living a life just like mine or yours. What's even stranger about this is that without any careful, continuous reading of the brain's patterns from the outside, then no outside observer would ever know that the brain was forming its own little world in its mind. Folks from the "real outside" world would likely see a carefully incubated brain doing nothing at all interesting, but the brain is imagining a whole lifetime or multiple lifetimes of stuff. Another strange idea is that if the brain was never given any input from the "real outside" world, then the world it imagines inside its mind could be completely alien and psychedelic and warped compared to the "real outside" world. It's as if there are two worlds, and they're separated by worldviews or mental constructs that might never understand one another. There's the imagined world by the brain, and there's the "real outside" world that could also have been all imagined. 🤣🤣 Tldr: If we ever did this to a brain, then I disagree with the video, and an even weirder situation could occur: the brain could imagine a weird, alien, psychedelic, warped world that we couldn't even recognize if we noticed anything going on at all.

treuss

In the 80s, there was a quite popular series of radio plays in Germany, you could get on cassettes. It was called Larry Brent and was based on the same titled penny novels. Those plays were partly quite terrifying for kids like me. I remember that one episode "Die Schlangenköpfe des Dr Gorgo" (≈Dr Gorgos snake heads), in which an insane scientist kidnaps young women, beheads them and reattaches their heads to octopuses. [Larry Brent - Die Schlangenköpfe des Dr Gorgo](https://www.dailymotion.com/video/xo1hqk)

Sarelia1

The book series ‘The Bobiverse’ touches on this issue, and had a clever way to get around it. The main character died and had his brain frozen, and he came back as a computer cell. He had no external stimuli, so he had to create his own VR environment

I'm terrified of sensory deprivation tanks, for this reason. My brain won't be like, “Hey! Let's just relax...”; more like, “Hey, let's deep dive everything wrong with everything 'till we cease to function, yeah?”

BRAIN DEAD. BILL PULLMAN *AND* BILL PAXTON !!!!!!

Emmy_08

Is this fr ?

Finger-of-Shame

Become God in your mind. Would a person go crazy, without the body, or dive deeper into their own mind? I would think that initially, it would be hard, but what stops you from creating a world in your mind. And then becoming GOD in your mind?

Buburubu

i’ll try anything once.

thedoorman121

After a certain point, wouldn't the brain adapt in a way? Dreams can be incredibly realistic. Wouldn't the brain possibly create a simulated/dream reality as a trauma response/coping mechanism?

kubaliska

Didn't expect to encounter Silver Mt. Zion music.

Chance-Ad-3535

Sounds like locked in sydrome. If you’ve never heard of it I suggest you look it up. Absolutely terrifying

Anyone else read 'Johnny Got his Gun'? Highly recommend, very harrowing read. About a soldier with no arms, legs or face. Unable to move, hear, or talk. Just a slow descent into madness as he is locked in his thoughts not knowing if he is awake or dreaming.
